I heard that one of his evolutions looked bad (the worst thing in the film one reviewer said, almost Asylum Level) and that there are occasional slips and jerky movements throughout. I know if I were in charge, assuming the time was available, I'd want to correct that before putting it out in international markets. But overall, people have said it looks great for a Japanese blockbuster.

To be fair, Toho was kind of being lazy. Stuff like Megalon and most of the Heisei/Millennium films don't exactly give the best impression. Biollante was a glimpse of what was possible. Sadly, we never really got to see it. Imagine 90s Higuchi with a Toho sized budget.

Original film was to have every monster in the Toho Vault in it. This included Kong and the Gargantuas. Couldn't use them for obvious reasons.

The All Monsters Attack Directive had:
Ghidorah, Manda, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Maguma, Ebirah, Baragon, Varan.

Ebirah was too water damaged.
Maguma's suit was damaged. They were opted out. Replaced with the freshly made Gorosaurus, Kumonga, and Minya from a year earlier.

Then they added Anguirus when they found out making a new Varan suit would cost to much money.
>>
>>14603212
How was Anguirus less expensive when he has more detail and mass?
>>
>>14603215
They took the money from making Baragon and Varan new suits, and pooled it for Anguirus.

Why does Mothra turn transparent briefly in this scene? Given the wackier tone of this one movie I thought maybe it was some subtle jokey reference to a goof in the older films but I can't really remember Mothra turning transparent in her first movie or the Godzilla vs. Mothra one.

If it's a genuine goof, how can you make this compositing mistake using what I assume are digital tools?
>>14602843
Nigger I NEVER watch dubs of asian films and always find them insufferable. It's obviously comedic in a way that even the most over the top 90s Gamera scenes never even vaguely approached. Even the acting of the characters is constantly exaggerated in a way that gives everything a sillier tone. And hell even the suits look cartoonier than usual.

I'm not saying it has no serious moments because it does, it's just one of the sillier films. It's just subtler about the comedy than, say, Godzilla doing a little victory dance or laughing at Rodan for getting sprayed by Mothra only to meet the same fate.
>>14602088
'54 & Tokyo SOS.

Kaneko ran out of time on GMK. He wanted more so that he could make a smoother experience, though Toho refused. They wanted the film out on schedule and Kaneko has been somewhat open about that denial and lack of opportunity to get brush up on his project. He seemed really disappointed.

The dubs for Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Monster Zero are good.

Tokyo SOS is one of your favourites? Where do the other Honda films fall on your list?
>>
>>14604003
Could you describe each action scene, how they play out, the good part/bad part about each scene, and your favorite action scene?
>>
>>14604033
each action scene brings a new stage of development of an ever growing G stumbling through various J cities. by the time the J military gets their shit together enough to put a real attack on G (following the US's lead), G's fully grown (kinda) and shows off a bunch of badass attacks that are basically enough for me to want to watch the whole movie again, despite the great deal of boring shit it's packed with.
>>
According to Jimpluff, or at least what he believes to be the case, the reason for the moments of noticeably weak CGI in Shin Godzilla is because lesser digital companies had to be called in to handle some scenes. Probably due to time and budget issues, he added. And Godzilla's early forms continues to be called the worst of the effects. Kind of crazy how that can exist along some of the more amazing material.
>>
>>14604044
Could you elaborate on the "boring shit"?

This honestly makes me worried what the director of Legendary's Godzilla sequel will be pressured to do. Hollywood does have to pander to these progressive pushing pansies sadly or else all they'll think about is how offended they are at a movie and give a movie a bad name. Hopefully this doesn't happen, especially not in a Godzilla movie.

How many women are in high Japanese government positions? Maybe it's a reflection of reality, which was Anno's goal in his movie.

And isn't the United States' portrayal balanced? It's not like they want to nuke Tokyo for the heck of it. They want to prevent Godzilla from further evolving and putting the whole world at risk. And the indecisiveness of the Japanese government created the situation. Additionally, the US assists in the final battle with Godzilla and some Americans felt bad about the possibility of having to nuke Japan again. I'm led to believe that the Hollywood Reporter's reviewer isn't all that fluent in Japanese.

>>
>>14604247
Yeah let me get into better detail.
The movie starts out quickly enough with an unidentified creature or thing in the water and there's a lot of discussion about what to do about it. Most of the scenes are people discussing what to do for what seems like forever in between small snippets of Godzilla's progression and destruction of the city. I see what they were going for, show indecisiveness, poor judgement, pointless discussions on the matter, etc etc. But it goes on for WAY too long. This is the majority of the movie. There are hardly any scenes of humans outside of a boardroom, except for the few bits where they attack Godzilla. They could have trimmed the fat a hell of a lot with these scenes. On top of that, most of the dialogue is filmed SUPER ZOOMED IN ON PEOPLE'S FACES. Its nauseating. No one really has any personality other than their job title that shows up on the screen for a brief second. The only one that is likeable and has any personality is the American/Japanese woman who spouts random English lines sometimes. She's sassy and cool, where everyone else is duller than a rock.
If they trimmed down these scenes, had more Godzilla bits, and used CG a bit more sparingly, I would have loved it. As it is I can only say I liked it for the bodyhorror Godzilla that actually does fill you dread in some scenes. Oh and Godzilla's defeat felt kinda anticlimactic.
>>
>>14604236 's right. though i liked all G's stages.

>>14604247
anon, trust. only about 3 characters actually stand out as people, rather than rank-holders. and though, patterson was hot, her English was just dreadful to listen to.

Is it true they mention something about him absorbing ambient energy, like blackouts in ares he walks through before he even reaches the power poles?
>>
>>14604272
also
>oh look, another group corridor walk scene
>>
>>14604247
There's very few backstories for the characters like are they married, do they have kids, etc. But they all have distinct personalities and in the end you start caring for the characters.
The dialogue is what makes this movie interesting, although it's tough to understand it without subtitles if you're not a native speaker of Japanese.
Good pacing and editing? We're talking about the Master Anno here!
>>
>>14604277
My Japanese is so-so, but yes there is a scene where all the power around Godzilla goes out, and when they try to send a camera probe in to see what's going on, it gets fried. Something about an electromagnetic field.
>>
>>14604272
>>14604285
These two extremes really make me wonder. People who are positive about the film praise the human drama and people not so impressed cite it as a negative. Maybe most Westerners don't have a strong enough grasp of Japanese. Most people would find a dialogue heavy foreign fikn tedious if they don't understand the language.

I plan to give it a rewatch once some subtitles are out, but I don't think my opinion will change much. The scenes were still excessive, samey, and the camera zooms get very obnoxious. Once in a while Anno will through in a more interesting or 'artsy' angle like even he's getting bored of cutting from "face filling the entire screen" to "another face filling the entire screen"
>>14604315
So THATS what they were talking about. Makes sense.

Not only is there a lot of dialogue, but they talk really fast too. I think the best way for Westerners to see this film is dubbed, since it conveys a lot more information than subtitles.

> Also her movie was alright but when she entered the greater Toho kaiju world she became a clear feminist mary sue

How? Godzilla killed Imago Mothra in MvG '64 and one of her offspring died in-between films due to injuries received at the hands of Godzilla. And of course Godzilla was defeated in his first couple of clashes with her, he was still the villain. Mothra was onky overpowered in the Heisei films.

The very simplest core of the modern trendy feminist/social justice movement is not bad and anime/manga/japanese nerdshit have had those messages since forever. Plenty of popular anime and manga has (among other things) messages that preach gender and racial equality of opportunity, unity regardless of in-born traits etc. The behavior of modern SJWs reminds me a lot of what old Black Panthers members said about the new party that are using their name: instead of getting together out of a love for their fellow black people, they're doing it to hate on white people.

The core of what nu-males like Jonathan McIntosh say isn't inherently evil and wrong, it's just so covered up in hate, racism/sexism and just pure garbage that it becomes insufferable. All of his vlogs and tweets about "toxic masculinity" are trying to make a point that Tezuka made in the 60s much better.

All the "hegemony of toxic patriarchal colonialist whiteness power plus prejudice" newspeak racial bullshit, at its core, has the same sort of message that Shotaro Ishinomori tried many times to get across, but once again it's focused far more on hate and thus it becomes unbearable. Not to mention Tezuka & Ishinomori, while being very left wing, also acknowledged that Japan can be racist towards whites which SJWs never would.

Same with movies. Back in the day a movie could just have a strong female lead or a cool black lead and that was nice... but now they have to shill it by baiting /pol/ types and then using their rage to try and get more publicity to the film. It's not about spreading love and acceptance but about spreading hate for "I'm not a bigot like YOU" smugness points, outrage publicity & pity-buys.

Progress works a lot like you being raped by me: you just shut up and let it happen.
>>
>>14604329
Yes. I love 2014. I enjoy Final Wars up to the thirty minute mark, just because it suddenly feels like it's just going though the motions. The problem is that the human fights are poorly choreographed and last twice as long as the monster fights (which are also poor) in a movie that has a dozen monsters.
>>
>>14604329
I find the human element of Godzilla '14 painfully dull. And it's a dependent on that element more than most Godzilla films.

Not a fan of Final Wars either.

>Kaneko ran out of time on GMK. He wanted more so that he could make a smoother experience, though Toho refused. They wanted the film out on schedule and Kaneko has been somewhat open about that denial and lack of opportunity to get brush up on his project. He seemed really disappointed.
Do you have a source to where he said this? I wanna see.

Regardless I guess it is a mistake and not a self-mocking reference... that sucks, it would've been great if everything was a little more polished. The film has a great atmosphere but something just feels a little too cheap about the fight scenes. I'm not sure how you can make the mistake of "temporary transparency" but then, I've never in my life done special effects.

I've not seen all the Honda films yet but IMO Godzilla vs. Mothra (and the original Mothra) are both harmed by Mothra herself not being a very interesting monster in terms of abilities (though Mothra vs. Godzilla was still a fun movie and the Godzilla scenes were really great and it was cool seeing Godzilla actually get enveloped in electricity effects). The first Ghidorah was charming and funny at the end but I also felt like the fight could've merged goofiness and epicness better given how much King Ghidorah was hyped up as this ultimate threat.

I'll have to watch the others but I dunno which one to go for. The War of the Gargantuas? The Ghidorah sequel in space? Just skip to Destroy All Monsters? I dunno which one would appeal to me more based on my taste.

Keith (kpa) of Sci-Fi Japan and TK, who is a reliable source of information, had this to say on the matter:

> Toho has always maintained a lot of control over their Godzilla movies; most of the directors they've used were Toho employees brought up in the studio system. Shusuke Kaneko is different; he's an independent filmmaker who makes movies for several different studios. Toho was a bit nervous bringing in an "outsider" to direct a Godzilla film because that's not how they generally operate. Kaneko's popularity convinced them to give it a shot (though they did have him make PYROKINESIS first to show he could do a movie Toho's way) but the deal was only for the one Godzilla film.

> Kaneko said there were pros and cons working for Toho. He preferred the longer schedule and creative control Daiei and other studios offered, but Toho provided higher budgets and the chance to work on Godzilla.

> Toho was very happy with GMK. It was the most profitable Millennium film, it received the most critical praise in Japan and the US, and it has played well outside Japan (it's the most theatrically rented Godzilla film in the US from Sony's repertory division). Rather than any kind of backlash from Japanese fans, ticket sales actually went up weeks into the film's run based on positive word-of-mouth... and that's rare for any movie. Toho asked Kaneko about doing the 2002 Godzilla film but he was already signed to direct the musical comedy WHEN YOU SING OF LOVE for Shochiku so Toho went back to their usual system and brought back Masaaki Tezuka to make GxMG.

> If the Godzilla series had continued beyond 2004 we likely would have seen Kaneko do another one. He did direct AZUMI 2 for Toho in 2005.

But I can't seem to find the exact quote I'm looking for though.

Out of ten stars, what would you give Mothra vs Godzilla and Ghidorah?

Yeah I'm a dirty phone poster. And yeah I'm talking about the fact they were going to use a twelve-foot puppet for way more scenes but couldn't get it to work. If Higuchi had been able to use the puppet as originally planned, whatever CGI they did use would have likely looked much better than it already does. Having to switch mid-production and go almost entirely CGI probably pushed the special effects team to the absolute limit I'm sure. Remember, a few months ago Higuchi admitted to being behind schedule (explaining the dry spell of no information) and that effects improved between the trailers and tv spots. Must have been stressful.

"Toxic masculinity" is just too buzzwordy; there's some truth behind the idea but it's generally only used by pretentious college students and/or try-hard internet kids.

I just see it a matter of channeling masculine drives into doing productive things vs. being a useless selfish cunt and caring about taking down others above all else. It's the message Astro Boy's Greatest Robot arc got across in the 60s through dramatic storytelling and a message One Punch Man gets across today through social satire.

>>
>>14606750
Electricity nearly bested Showa Godzilla before he grew immune to it. Heisei Godzilla was nearly taken down by cadmium and anti-nuclear bacteria.

But Shin Godzilla was still evolving. Maybe he needed more time to mature.
>>
>>14606773
Electricity only affected Godzilla in two showa movies. All others he didn't care (Godzilla 1954) or got stronger(Ebirah, vs MechaG)

I've always felt that some human weapons do affect Godzilla like the missiles on G2000, but his healing makes that null and does nothing but annoy him in the long run. I feel like that is the case in this movie based on descriptions
>>
>>14606750
Shin is the Realistic Toho Godzilla, while G14 was the realistic American Godzilla(2.0).

Shin has a very thin layer of skin/"armor" on his body, and being hit by an explosive that's designed to dig/penetrate underground/the ground and explode, would do some damage to him.

What I heard was that it catches between his spines, and hits the weak area on his back, so it's understandable why it would damage Shin.

Depends on which Showa Godzilla.

Heisei was pure muscle and Armour, so I would guess that he would feel it, but not be hurt by it.

Goji54 attempts to walk through the wires and quickly backs away. He then proceeds to burn/tear down the towers, avoiding the wires themselves. Later during his rampage, he is hesitant about walking through more wires and screeches angrily when he is electrocuted.

In King Kong vs Godzilla, electricity successfully keeps him outside of populated areas.

In Mothra vs Godzilla, the electric trap almost takes him down. But human arrogance gives him an opportunity to recover.

By Sea Monster he's immune and by MechaGodzilla he uses it as a power source.
>>

>>
>>14604415
>>14604811
I'm rewatching Mothra and I'm at the end and... honestly I enjoy it more now that I know what to expect and could pay attention to the smaller things (ex. the first battle is just a dying old lady moth trying and failing to take down Godzilla and not a super-epic full blown kaiju fight).

The whole moral of humanity coming together may be seen as cheesy and shallow by many people today, but if this movie was made now some crazy journos would probably take issue with the human protagonists privilegesplaining to the oppressed islanders and not allowing them their POC anger or something (along with getting mad that the tribals are Japanese actors with painted skin) and how it's teaching Japanese kids to be shitlords.

Basically what I'm saying is that the super-simple cliche message of a 60s family film feels refreshing and likable after dealing with so much political bullshit as of late which is an experience I hadn't gone through when I first watched the movie.

And once again not expecting some super-epic monster showdown made the monster scenes more likable. The miniatures are handled well and some of the "military vs. Godzilla" scenes are like more over-the-top and extravagant versions of '54 scenes (ex. you actually see the electricity course through Godzilla, the towers blow up instead of just being town down). The whole idea of Godzilla being like some man-created godly vengeance towards itself worked well with the cartoonishly assholish businessman getting his shit ruined. The monster scenes are also an improvement over '61's Mothra.

It's good... I'd say around 4 stars.

Rewtached the first Ghidorah too. My only significant issues are that Godzilla didn't use his nuclear breath at all during the final fight, and the way they only decided to stop recycling Godzilla's screams for Rodan halfway. But I'd rather blame Toho and deadlines for that than Honda or Tsuburaya; it looks like they tried their best with what they were given (I mean, this came out the same year as Mothra so some rush work is to be expected)

The comedy worked, the action worked, it was a pretty good monster movie for what it was.

But the final scene where the aliens mind-control the monsters into fucking everything up? From all I've seen of Tsuburaya's effects work so far, this is probably the coolest and looks like the most highly labored too.

At least, that's from my newfag perspective - I've never in my life worked on anything of the sort so to people with more knowledge than me I could very well sound like Theron Martin from ANN talking about animation.

Also don't really think of it as a Godzilla movie and more as a space adventure movie with Godzilla in it. Really it didn't start becoming the "Godzilla series" until the 70's.

I think I'm starting to like you. Would you by chance be a woman? We need to work on Monster Zero though.

Anyway, what do you think of Honda as a director and how (objectively speaking) do you feel Tsuburaya's work holds up? If you had to recommend Godzilla films to casual viewers, would these be it?

So what do you want the anime to be like? Shonen CUHRAZY, Slice of Life with kaiju, somehow make it a harem, or anime adaptations of one of the eras?
>>
>>14608590
I'm expecting an OVA. Something like three episodes. See what kind of an audience they might have. Or perhaps the Shin Chan crossover was the test.

It would be neat if Studio khara has been doing the animation this entire time and we don't know about it. I'm expecting either Heisei Godzilla (Toho's go to design) or ShinGoji to be used (most recent incarnation and associated with an insanely successful film).

Anyway, I want it to be something serious. Not another Godzilla Island type deal. And I want it to use some of the lesser monsters like Varan, Manda, and Gorosaurus.

I like this idea. Reminds me of that Batman: Gotham Knight compilation that got released back when The Dark Knight was opening. I think there was also Green Lantern: Emerald Knights released around the time of that 2011 Green Lantern clunker.

I'd love to see a compilation by different animation studios... Madhouse, Khara, I.G, etc.
>>
Guys I need a good pic for a shin godzilla shirt.
can you post some with good res?
>>
Done. The humans vs. aliens stuff was alright and did help with build-up; but what I found by far the most surprising is how the very last monster scene was rushed as hell (complete with multiple shots of blatantly-visible wires), and yet the one right before that was one of the most impressively done 'monsters smashing shit up' scenes I've seen in any of these movies. The contrast was pretty fucking nuts.

Were Toho just really unforgivable with deadlines by this point?
>>
>>14608659
Forgot pic.
>>
>>14608665
Seriously, this was probably the best monster scene of these two Ghidorah movies followed by what is likely the worst.
>>
>>14608659
It's lower budget than you might initially suspect. At the time it was intended to be the franchise finale, using all of the suits/props that they still had in working order to give it a big sendoff without spending a lot of money on it. It's not like they were throwing everything and the kitchen sink in to try to revive the franchise, that's just what happened on accident.
>>
>>14608659
> Were Toho just really unforgivable with deadlines by this point?
Toho deadlines were really tight. We don't give Honda and his crew enough credit for what they were able to consistently accomplish with such little time and small budget. Plus, Toho was getting stenchy with the money they were willing to allow for these types of films (Monster Zero is the first film to use stock footage). I feel even worse for a Jun Fukuda, he had only half the budgets Honda got to work with.
>>
>>14608676
Not that anon, but I didn't know this. I knew that Destroy All Monsters was originally going to be the final film, but that obviously didn't happen. How many other times has the Godzilla franchise planned to be stopped, only for it to continue in popularity until Toho finally ceded to waning popularity and closed production for extended hiatuses?
>>
>>14608676
> At the time it was intended to be the franchise finale, using all of the suits/props that they still had in working order to give it a big sendoff without spending a lot of money on it.

Well, most of the Rodan parts of the pre-finale destruction scene were lifted from the Rodan movie, so yeah, there were definitely time and budget constraints.

Didn't one home video release of Rodan edit out most of the wires? I saw some people complaining about it, saying it's an unnecessary change.
>>
Now that I think about it, maybe part of the reason the strings are really visible now is that the image is far clearer as a result of a remaster. On the other hand, I have no idea what films looked like in theaters back in the 60s and if the image clarity improved the same way TVs did.
>>
>>14608753

>>

The original American release of Rodan didn't have the visible wires. Whoever was in charge of editing and distributing it removed them (they never revealed how).

I want to say that the commentary track on the Destroy All Monsters blu ray was where I learned it, but now you guys are making me doubt myself.

You can see a lot of evidence of cost-cutting in the movie, like the fact that not all the monsters who are shown arriving at the final battle actually participate in it and the monsters' international attacks being confined to relatively small sets compared to the monster rampages in previous movies. It's certainly more well done than Godzilla vs. Megalon and some of the other later showa movies, but there's still a lot of "get mileage out of props and footage that we already have" stuff in Destroy All Monsters.
>>
>>14608826
Wait? Are you saying Monster Zero or Destroy All Monsters was meant to be the finale? If you're talking about the latter, you're correct. Toho intended to end things with DAM. The Japanese film industry was dying (people moved onto television) and Godzilla films were drawing smaller and smaller audiences as a result. Honda had a lot of neat ideas for the film, however, budget restrictions and objections from Toho prevented them from being used.

Some North American Godzilla fans seem to have an agenda. Despite the positive reception Shin Godzilla has been enjoying, these fans take every opportunity to diss it and remind you of the "superiority" of Edwards' film. You'll normally find dislike of Shin Godzilla accompanied by praise of Godzilla '14 (its human characters included) and/or claims that Shin Godzilla is nationalistic and anti-American. So it's probably a bunch of people who didn't understand it, haven't seen it, or have something against Hideaki Anno and his work.

>In the third, Humans grow arrogant, perceiving Godzilla to be a sort of Super-weapon that operates at their whim, Godzilla evolves again into something even more monstrous than before to quell these ungrateful jerks.

Couldn't the difference in quality between old Gamera and newer Gamera be taken advantage of as far as marketing goes? Just put a really shitty old-school Gamera scene that looks like adults playing with bootleg toys next to one of the super-atmospheric non-CG scenes from the Iris movie or the stop-motion Gyaos face-explosion from the new trailer.
