***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I'm not really a fan of it. The vents on the face and the gendum chin just don't do it for me.

I'm gonna do it. Gonna make the plunge and try to learn airbrushing. Got me a cheap Testor airbrush kit and gonna grab some cheap Testor acrylic and see what I can fuck up.

What should I look for in a primer and top coat though? The guide wasn't too specific on that and there isn't a real "hobby store" in town so I can't just waltz up and buy "Tamiya-brand thing" and whatnot. Got a store with basic model paints though, so I can probably substitute, at least until I decide if I want to seriously get into airbrushing

I built a shelf for my gunpla today. I'll be adding more gendums this Tuesday, I plan to go to GundamPlanet's store in Palisade Park.
>>
>>14590034

Don't do it, you'll just get overcharged.
>>
>>14590047
I'd rather pay extra than wait for the box to ship. Plus, it's only a little deviation from my way home from work, so it's in a convenient spot.
>>
>>14590047
Not him but if you do the math it actually evens out pretty close. The cost of shipping from Nipland is about the same as the total markups you pay from a domestic seller.
>>
>>14590034
You're not planning on keeping the boxes on the shelf too, are you? It looks kind of sloppy
>>
>>14589978
don't bother painting it until you clean off those disgusting nubs. They're everywhere and very noticeable. Also I don't think that airbrush will work quite as well as an Iwata or Badger model, depending on if it has variable pressure.
>>
>>14590069
Nah, just a temporary place until I find a nice spot for them that's out of sight but still accessible.

>>
>>14589978
Listen to >>14590071 but also don't listen to him. A cheap airbrush is perfectly fine to start off with, then move on to a fancier one once you get the basics down. He's right about the nubs though, those will show up even with the pain unless they're sanded smooth. AT LEAST 800 grit (the higher the grit, the finer it is). But where did you get the airbrush that you can't get primer and topcoat? Primer I can't hep much with but it's not really necessary unless you're changing the color of the kit. If you're still going to paint it green you don't really need it. As for topcoat, a lot of people swear by Pledge floor polish, but it's going to come out on the glossy side, which is fine if that's what you want, and you'll want some gloss for panel lining and decals, but you'll have to find something to go over that if you want a flat finish.

Alrighty then.
I did actually find a primer though, it was hidden away but they had a single bottle of it, and several things I assume are topcoats (They were clear and labeled things like "Gloss", "Matte", etc..)
Thought I did decently on the nubs though, they look bad but are pretty smooth (I worked them over with the file from my gunpla tool kit, probably isn't the optimal method) Will see about digging up some fine grit sandpaper and trying that, will probably have to order from Amazon and wait for shipping though.
First weekend off in a long time so I'm just throwing things together suddenly

Did find my GM kit I forgot about, I kind of gave up on a while back because pretty much everything needed to be painted and I was absolutely botching the paint job with a brush + enamel paints
Only painted the shield so far at least, but the all of the pieces were hit with a clear acrylic (I think) to help the paint stick or something along those lines I can't even remember
>>
>>14590431
Some people do use files, but I think sandpaper is a bit easier with the differing levels of grits being a bit easier to work through
>Gloss, matte
Those are definitely the topcoats. Glosscoat is what you'd apply after painting if you planned to then panel line it afterwards.
Matte would be the final coat. If you just want to snap build and panel line, then you can apply matte coat after all of that.
>>
>>14590047
Gundam Planet is pretty neat if you live close enough and don't mind the mark up in place of shipping and wait time. Personally, I think the fact that it's a warehouse stacked to the ceiling with gunpla leaves more of an impression than the gunpla store at Gundam Front.

New to Gundam, is there a reason for everyone having a cutting mat? I looked at the guide, and besides mentioning that other tools commonly used for modeling can come in handy, I don't really see a good use for it, though that may just be ignorance on my part.
>>
>>14590301

>>
>>14590923
So you don't stab the table underneath if you're using a hobby knife. I build on a table, so I had to get at least a small one.
Plus, it looks cool!
>>
>>14590923
It's so you don't scratch up your table when you're cutting stuff. Same reason you use one when preparing food.
>>
>>14590923
What >>14590930 said, but also it has measurements on it for quick reference too. And another good thing is that what you cut into the cuttings mat can then be rolled up and thrown in a trash can.

>>14590928
Explain why you subject yourself to association with Snapfit and for what reasons you could ever possibly consider a known shitposter a friend. And doing this while not trying to get him to improve at modeling. If you're not actually him, that is.

>>14590893
That kitbash should actually work considering how much slimmer the Revive Guncannon is compared to the regular one.

- to avoid cutting the table beneath
- the grid can give you size references, for stuff like plaplates
- it also serves for point references, which is very useful for placing symetrical decals

Specifically, Tamiya paints. I recently got an airbrush from a family member. It's old and probably not that good, single action, but probably better than hand painting.

>>
>>14591460
Making 3D printed ball joints is hard at that scale. I tried and even with a perfect cup to support the ball they might not come out right. I was able to make one for a Figma but it was mediocre at best.

Materials is another problem, since FDM printers don't have perfect reproduction from files due to mechanical imperfections and there aren't a lot of good materials to emulate polycaps.

If you were to get a set of joints like you want printed at shapeway it'd probably be the cost of a HG 1/144. The figma joint was like 3 or 4 dollars IIRC and minimum shipping was $5, and that was with me as the maker, so no overhead for commission.

So I'm looking through the various guides and I'm not entirely sure on this - I should use Tamiya extra-thin cement to glue seams together, but what about gluing plastic plates for scratchbuilding? Finished this tonight, just a quick snap, one coat and I feel I still have a ways to go with my panel line work.

Hey guys

I was recently in Tokyo and bought my first couple of gunpla sets.
I've never watched any of the animes but I always loved the designs of the old school Gundams.

I got the big 1/48 RX78-2 and a 1/100 version of it (I bought this one at the big Gundam store in Odaiba)
And I got Bearguy because it was the most Japanese thing I had seen. I had to get it.

I ordered four more from a UK webshop but they're fucking expensive outside Japan! They're seriously half price in Japan...
If I had fucking known how hooked I would have become.... I was in the fucking heart of Gundam and I didn't fill my suitcase with kits....

Anyway, I should get a 1/100 MG Powered GM and a 1/144 HGUC Guncannon (21st century real type version in the next two days.
I also bought 1/144 HGBF Ghost Jegan Type F and M that should come a some point here in August

I want to get a Gusion too, a HG Origin MSD Local type and a Zaku. I'm thinking about getting the 1/48 Zaku next time I'm in Tokyo.

I didn't really like the Unicorn models until I saw the red one with the LED kit. Now I'm thinking about getting that one too next time I'm in Tokyo.

I want to get some of those real touch markers too and make some heavy weathering on my 1/48 RX 78-2. I painted and collected Warhammer for 20+ years so I'm pretty familiar with weathering techniques and stuff, I just figured I'd get the markers too.

I have one important question for you guys:
Does anybody know where I can get the 1/144 Ez-SR Fox Hound kit?
The only places I can find it don't ship to Denmark... I would really like to get it since I think it's one of the coolest Gundams I've seen. I only just got my first gunpla kits in June so I was late to the party :(
I would really appreciate if somebody knows a place where I can get the Fox Hound

I'm 2m tall and I was just a little bit taller than the foot.

The mall behind it is very nice too, the ground level has an amazing food court and it of course has the huge Gundam store and museum on the top level.

Odaiba was pretty cool in general, there were no tourists at all. It looked like a place the locals came in the weekend to chill. It kinda reminded me of Singapore.

I'm going next Spring. I love flowers so I have to see when the cherry trees blossom.

You'll still be tall in Japan lel. I'm basically a giant beast there. I'm 2m tall and I was sweating my ass off all week I was there. I'm from Denmark so I'm not used to warm and humid weather.

Awesome you can stay for two months. I was only there for one week and it was just not enough. I don't even feel like I've scratched the surface.
2 months should give you plenty of time and I'm sure since you're into the whole Gundam/gunpla thing now, you will really appreciate the huge gundam store and museum they have in Odaiba.
I hope you have a great time mate

I'll be staying for a month next time so plenty of time to take it easy and soak it all in.
I'm going to walk around all day, go to concerts and shit and then get some gunpla kits to sit and build before going to bed.
It's going to be comfy as fuck!

It's just as easy as any other HG kit. The only difference is you build the core block, with the head and wings, first, and plug it into the chest. Keep in mind the ankles are very limited, so you'll need a base.

Solid for an RG. Chrome-plated sword. Great parts separation. Looks great OOB and better just panel-lined. Loaded with every gimmick possible for an Exia.

Only downside is limited legs articulation due to the front skirts.
Shit's fun as fuck with an action base.

I don't think Bandai updates molds that are several years old. Are those even HG scale and 1/144? I thought they were 1/100 scale. It's usually either make a new mold or don't bother.

Leopard DaVinci is a GBF model because it has different weapons, proportions, and detailing than the normal Leopard Gundam.
>>
>>14593638
Yeah, it's kind of sad that the only 1/144 heavyarms available is from 16 years ago.
>>
>>14593638

They were probably working on an HGAW Leopard but didn't want to make the mold for just one kit from an old show that wasn't even that popular. So they designed the Da Vinci and rolled that out first because it's new and in Build Fighters so it might sell more.

I think within the next 2 years they will probably roll out the HGAW Leopard.

Hide my mouth and nose in my arm and knock the model down to the ground.

>>
>>14594304
all you do is put a little bit of cement on the edges of the parts, wait a few moments for it to get a bit sticky and squeeze them together and clamp them with something. then after you can run some more glue over the seam if necessary, but i usually dont

after the glue has cured you file down the excess, and most likely there will still be a faint line where the seam was. then you apply some tamiya basic putty, i usually thin it with a bit of zippo oil and brush it on. once that dries sand it smooth.

but i would never out glue on the seam after snapping the parts together, thats pointless, you need the parts physically bonded all the way through the thickness of the styrene

Anyone else receive their RG Sinanjus?

The box is HUGE for a RG kit.

The box itself is at least double the size of the boxes for the RG Exia or 00Q, or even Wing Zero.

Hell it even surpasses the size of the box for the RG Zeta.

>>14596401
I only purchased the ones that have no MGs because I wanted a 1/100 representation of the designs. A lot of these come off as a bit short so they don't scale all that well with MGs, but they don't exactly look horrible when compared either. The ones that got MGs make their old 1/100s look totally out of proportion though.

When you guys are sanding seemlines, what grit to you use. Ive been using a file because I prefer the finished look, but its not doing so great with seemlines.

I have a 2000 grit auto sandpaper for finishing that I enjoy, but I need that first grit level.

Also, What grit do you guys use for everyday things like removing nubs and such
>>
Oh fuck, the Formula was released
>>
>>14596754
400 for when heavier sanding is needed, then I just use 800 1000 and 1500 for everything else. I mainly use 1000 for a happy medium, but 800 works if I need something slightly heavier.
>>
>>14596759
would the 1000 work well for removing seemlines?
>>
>>14596017
only the extra skirt armors have beam sabers
those things at the legs are just additional boosters
>>
Alright, /m/. I'm about to take the plunge and build my first MG. Specifically, the Hi-Nu ver. Ka. Nubs have never really been an issue, but I do have one question. I'n my HG Exia model, the saber was just pure white. What am I supposed to use to color it? Those Gundam markers? Would the Hi-Nu have anything similar to this kind of situation? Iread the guide but I couldn't find any answers to this specific problem
>>
>>14596519

I've come to realize that with orange you either have to go all out and make it a main color, or be so extremely subtle with it it's only an accent. You can't half ass orange because it's such a distinct color, especially when you have it paired with two shades of blue.

I would make the forearms dark blue to match the rest of the mech and make the shoes dark blue too. Try making the lower legs dark blue and the thighs light blue, to both match the forearms and break up the large chunk of blue that currently forms the torso, waist, and thighs. Instead of an orange crotch, try light blue for it. If you must have orange on there besides for the visor try the chest vents, wrist cuffs, the missiles, and shoe tongue armor part.
>>
>>14596807

1) You're supposed to use fluorescent paint but with those "all molded in one color" beam sabers they will likely look shit no matter what.

2) No, the MG does not have that. Next time you need a reference as to what the parts of a kit look like, there is dalong.net.
>>
>>14596752

Ive never painted my gunplas before (outside of early attempts with my old warhammer paint). I know most people recommend spray kits and tamiya paints, but the main question I have is do I still need to prime (ive only ever really heavily painted warhammer figures and they /needed/ primer).

Thanks for the quick responses, guys, I really appreciate it. One other question though; is the exia HG supposed to feel a little cheap? I can't have the dual swords on its hips because any pose makes them pop off, the pieces in between the shoulders and chestpiece keep popping out, and the GN sword is loose as fuck when it's put together.

>>
>>14596910
I've done a few. My most recent was an HG 1/100 Sandrock Custom, and my only real complaint for that kit was the lack of articulation and the overall maneuverability of the legs in general. I just really like the 1/100 size as compared to the 1/144. Is the MG G Gundam a pretty good starting point for MG's?

God, why would you smear the legs so much and don't panelline the part that needs it the most: the head.

Look at your image and tell me the head doesn't look off to you.

Here it is "finished"

As in I'm done with it tonight.

I'll take the nubs off tomorrow and spray it with dullcote.

I start with my file, then 30 micron paper, then work my way down to my 1 micron. I am also not a sane man. I also own some 12000 Grit micro-mesh I'm saving for Literally Shining Gundam
>>
>>14598410
Probably. I'll paintbrush a few details, it might help a bit. I wanted to do a CAT vehicle color scheme so there's not much more I can do
>>
>>14598692
I almost choked on my coffee. Well played, anon

Yeah, I have it, it's quite nice for an NG but has a lot of stickers for the metallic red. But it's gloss coat and mekki plated gold is amazing, all other parts could use some paint. They even include an extra mekki plated arm since you also get the NG blitz arm. I'm personally waiting for an MG version that may never come for some stupid reason since astray is so damn popular

Don't.
Paint.
Anything.
But.
Small.
Details.
With.
Gundam.
Marker.
