Maybe this incarnation would be better as a one-off movie, like GMK. Bringing him back for a sequel raises serious questions unless they remove his evolution abilities. As much as I would love to see an expansion of Shin's Story, I think a different story would be the best choice in order to prevent ruining one of the better movies.

I doubt they'll stray to far from the tone of Shin Godzilla, but maybe keeping the "Bleak" atmosphere and keeping themes from Shin Godzilla, but making it a New movie.

In the event that they do use Shin's universe again, I would like to see this as a mixture between a revision of Showa and a ideas from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla/SOS.

Except that right now, the movie is at a cross roads. Do they keep it as a Godzilla vs Human conflict or do they start introducing new monsters for him to battle. Either way, they are going to have a rough time setting up a believable conflict that isn't "just cause".

Something that Jim and JR harp on in their review of Shin Godzilla is that the film doesn't really delve into the personal lives of any of the characters and they seem to suggest this alone is extremely detrimental and prevents the audience from caring about or relating to the characters. However, it's like they don't take execution into the equation. For example, the characters of Ridley Scott's Alien are fairly bare bones and most people found them engaging enough. That was assisted by the grim environment and the horror element, though the latter doesn't really come in until late in the picture. Anyway, people who enjoyed Shin Godzilla have praised it for its cinematography, dialogue, and somewhat exaggerated acting. That sounds like compensation enough for me and the quirky ensemble cast (which Honda usually excelled) has the potential to make the oft-talked about meetings exciting. As an example of how exploring the lives of characters doesn't always work, I offer Godzilla (2014). We know almost everything about Ford Brody, however, the actor sucks the life out of the film whenever he is onscreen and his family driven struggle barely contributed to anything. If the writing, editing, and atmosphere of Shin Godzilla works then I think that's good enough. It appears Anno wanted Godzilla to completely drive the narrative and everything else is a reaction to him, with a satirical and hopeful human element, that critiques the failures of the Japanese government during 3/11 and fears caused by the disaster itself, surrounding it.

Can anyone who has seen the film state their opinion. Are the humans of Shin Godzilla interesting or lively enough to carry the film?

Someone said the cast of Ghidorah was pretty unlikeable so I decided to rewatch it. I only got about 10 minutes in before I needed to go to bed but I really didn't see something I liked.
Gigan's cast has its moments but I don't care a whole lot for the film itself. It's something that I need to be intoxicated to enjoy, and I don't mean that as a compliment. It's seriously fucked by its low budget in more ways than one.

I have a feeling if I rewatched Son of Godzilla I'd like the cast but my memory is foggy.

I've only seen that once, but I remember being pleasantly surprised by the cast in the movie's first half. I actually kinda thought it was interesting how they reacted to that reporter guy living with them, and then having to cope with giant monsters, relocating their base of operations, and that island fever or whatever.

But by the second half, it dragged too much, the humans' "mini-drama" was going nowhere, and while I don't remember the exact details, I finished the movie not caring about them anymore.

It fits the concept of Gigan perfectly, aliens modify a giant creature to create the ultimate warrior and send him to the highest bidder like a bounty hunter. Showa design looking back on it is all over the place like a prototype of FW Gigan, though in a sense it does give a good representation of kaiju designs of that era. Kiryu looks great, but he's also a bit generic. I mean, it makes sense because he's supposed to be more heroic but it just doesn't excite me that much.

Showa's a classic, yeah he looks old-school and cheesy but the design has personality.

I don't hate Heisei, it's not my favorite, but it's okay for what it was. Not at all a "definitive" version of either an evil or a heroic MG, but it did its job for one movie. Could use some fucking color or tone variety.

Ghidorah. Granted he's my favourite anyway, but the whole 'life forms fused into one' conceit lends itself particularly well to something with three heads. He could be like, an example of when it goes REALLY wrong and the lifeform is fighting itself, maybe have his heads fighting each other and shit.

Biollante would work for similar reasons. I'd like to see something from Heisei reinterpreted since we've never gotten to see that. Destroyer might be too similar to Shin Godzilla though, and miss his thematic poignance in a film that doesn't end a continuity, and in a continuity that doesn't involve the oxygen destroyer. Mothra and Battra maybe? The whole 'judging mankind for fucking up the Earth' seems even more topical with Shin than with earlier iterations.

Mechagodzilla has never been a favourite of mine but the concept lends itself so readily to reinterpretations that it would honestly be a shame for an era to go by without one. I can't wait to see what Legendary's Mecha-G looks like and place it proudly on my shelf.

Maybe. That or a Space Godzilla or a Biollante could all play well as parallels to the sort of convergent evolution that Shin undergoes. Honestly I say they just up the ante on the high concept shit, and give us a Mechagodzilla who's a conglomerate of machine-based organisms and AIs. It would be our one chance at a messy, grungy, asymmetrical Mecha-G cobbled together from random parts with semi-visible internal workings, blades torches and buzzsaws placed randomly about the body, and little gears and pieces falling off of him like when you see giant robots move in some anime. You could even do some sort of thematic sophistry about how now man has created new life which is itself evolving.

I don't think Japan is quite ready for even a remotely faithful live-action adaptation of NGE. Either the CGI will be awful or many elements would have to be dropped. Although I think some of it was a result of time restrictions, there are supposedly some jarring shots in Shin Godzilla and it only featured a single creature.

Toho's official media refers to Godzilla as a male. The best counter you can come up with is that in the original scripts the writers used gender neutral pronouns.
