***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I have an MG Turn A Gundam which has been snap fitted and panel lined laying around.

Are there any official art of where decals may go on it? It came with a dry transfer sheet, but I dunno where to put them.

It has giant racks of both Tamiya and Testors paints, both in can and jar form, but the only topcoats it has were Rustoleum matte and clear. I nabbed a bottle of Future for clear instead of that crap, and I decanted cans of Tamiya White Primer and Fine Primer I bought, but I have no idea how fucked I am for a flat topcoat.

Lining is thick, but I'm using a.25mm micron pen. Paint thinner weakened a joint to the point where is broke off. As per a /m/ anon is "awkward". For my first attempt this build served it's purpose as a good learner, but i need some tips on outline.

Note how she can only mention Unicorn and Build Fighters -- methinks she hasn't actually seen any of the other shows. Victory in particular has a fuck ton of strong women characters who, while dying along with most of the other characters, all teach something to Uso and die in the line of fire. Marbet even has to act as a guardian, saviour, and instructor to the rookies Odelo and Tomache. They're never shown as controlled or in need of saving. Hell, the women in the show do a lot of the controlling of the antagonists - Fuala, Katejina, Lupe all control their male counterparts and compatriots in significant portions of the show.
Very little of them need "saving" by a knight in shining armor. Maybe Shakti? But she's never a damsel-in-distress, she's only really even in a position of danger because of her own volition - she's doesn't leave fighting the war and resolving the conflict to the men and Uso, she has her own agency, acts according to her own wishes, with her own idea of how to stop the war with the Zanscare. The one woman who needed saving was Uso's mother, the person who taught him survival skills as a child, and designed the Victory Two at the very least. She also ended up being one of the very many people Ãœso couldn't save.
Sure, Queen Maria is controlled by Kagatie to an extremely large extent, but that was just a part of the plot and analogous to puppet states and rulers throughout history.

She genuinely doesn't seem to know shit about what she's talking about and clearly speaks off of incredibly limited experience with "most Gundam series". She's probably a dubfag, so some of the subtlety (I use that term very loosely) is most likely lost in translation. Subs are far from perfect, but knowing a little bit of Japanese + English subtitles lets you go far further than English or other language dubs.

She probably even never watched the original series. LaLa was strong to the point where char would've been out of a job. They even make jokes about it in Gundam-San.
Not to mention she has a problem with allenby using a ribbon, but master asia is using a towel isn't even mentioned. I know some forms of martial arts use this as well, but there could've been a large amount of different weapons used instead of it. Point is the complaints are stupid, and anyone crying "sexism" or "misogyny" nowadays need a fucking wakeup call to reality.

The real problem with that wasn't that there were no "legos for girls" that's not what we asked for. We wanted the marketing to not exclude girls. If you watch lego commercials from the 70s and 80s they had girls playing with the boys with the SAME legos.
Girls who play with legos generally show interest in STEM careers.

We just wanted to undo the problematic thinking of "legos are boy toys"
Legos were always intended to be unisex.

A friend of mine bought a Jesta Cannon MG for 120 dollyroos at a convention and kept breaking parts of it while he was building it.

>>14535471
Gourge marks look unrealistic (no visible damage on the surrounding surface). Bullet holes on leg skirt and arm are look to deliberately paced (straight line, in the center of the piece) and look a bit off as, again, the surrounding area looks unaffected and the holes themselves just end, with no exit wound or anything. Additionally, the holes themselves are the same colour as the plastic instead of silver or black. The wiring idea looks good, but those dots are out of scale. Remember, those dots would be 144 times larger in real life. Some smaller gauge copper wire could also be used

Overall, good effort. Keep it up! You might also find weather guides on AFV models to be useful if you continue, as they'll give you some good ideas techniques you can try.

I figure he probably was trying to rip parts out of the runner with his hands rather than clipping them out.

When Wing was airing in the US, I was a 4th grader who first encountered Wing no-grade gunpla in the local Toys'r'Us, and as I was lacking a hobby nipper, I was reduced to twisting out bits or using scissors to try and cut parts out of the runners.

It was a hellish, spiky time, but those brave Wing figures created a lifelong passion for gunpla with their sacrifice.

Does anyone here have the 1/72 VF-31? I'm thinking of picking it up, but the only plamo I've built are a couple of HG kits. Further, I'm having trouble finding information regarding its structure and quality (the only in-depth review I've found was in moonrunes).

I know that there's an ass-ton of stickers to put in place, but I can't tell if this thing is snap-assembled or if it requires cement..

Would some kind anon please spoonfeed me on what I would need to put this thing together? I'm going to go pick up some top-coat and modeling tweezers at the store tomorrow, and I'd like to know if I need anything else.

Well, at the time, it was also the modem-internet era and Gundam and gunpla were a very, very new thing in the US that would remain as such for at least another 10 years for me.
Information was zero-to-nil outside of actually ordering kits through the internet via import.

I didn't even know there WERE hobby nippers at the time Wing was on Toonami; I had to get into Warhammer 40k in high school to actually figure out there was dedicated tools to get model bits off of the runners.

its still a Bandai snap together kit, VFs share a lot of technology with gunpla but are more complicated and designed to achieve a different goal than a gundam kit (perfect transformation vs. details and poseability). my VF-27 was about as complicated as a MG with an inner frame in the legs and lots of accessories, but the body is filled with a lot more moving parts you can break and everything fits at much tighter tolerances to keep things stable. another big difference is the markings, you need to decide whether to use the big sheet of peel and place stickers or jump into applying the set of waterslide decals, which are more accurate and look nice but will take you hours to apply and need to be properly protected with topcoat to keep them from rubbing off.

look through Dalong's review of the VF-31, you'll learn more about how everything goes together by looking at the parts breakdown and manual scans than just reading a review.

I was an elementary schooler at the time, and Japanese instruction manuals were just so much gobbledy-gook to me that I couldn't make heads or tails of anything more than "connect C3 to C4 with polycap PC5 between them."

As well, these were no-grade kits where the hands weren't even real hands, but just oddly shaped polycaps that looked like hands and had a hole in the middle for a weapon instead of molded plastic like in an HG (but the G-Reco and IBO kits are giving those old kits a run for their money, since their hands are also increasingly cheap and simple to the point that triggers are either recessed into the gun grip or just floats uselessly above the hand).

That prototype Hi-Mo Origin Zaku II I was okay with being a P-Bandai since if you really want to you could just buy any of the Origin Zaku IIs and a Prototype Dom and slap the top half of one on the other.

But this looks like a much more involved release that would probably have sold better than the Original the Gundam that this kit is based off of that probably won't even show up in the OVAs like the Prototype Gouf because it's one of those MSD kits. I mean there isn't anything the Local Type Gundam does that the EZ-SR set doesn't do better for 200 yen less.

>>14536292
That would pretty much be financial suicide. Waterproof Gundam probably would've been a regular release in the Origin line if Bandai wasn't also juggling between three other HG lines at the moment for release date spaces. Makes me wish for the days when all we had were a single TV show and the one random Gundam OVA airing alongside it.

that said, general tweaking and modding will leave you with a gyan vulcan, really the only major issue is weither or not you still want to ability to swap around between normal gyan and gyan vulcan or stand alone valuable pod,the pod never stayed together too well in the first place and revive gyan is cheap enough that you could get 2 if your really wanting both of them readily available.
the way i modded the shoulder armor still allows for switching back to vanilla gyan other than some pegs on the shoulders.
so its not impossible by any means,it just needs some work

>it doesn't look much more complicated to build than what I've put together, It's crazy how well the stickers pull the whole together though, it looks sad when its naked.
This is the Messiah I built in 2007. Even though it was the second Bandai kit I built, I didn't have any problem with it; just follow the directions and you'll be fine.

About the stickers, the ones in the fuselage don't look that bad if you apply them carefully and cut the excess off. I suggest applying them as you build the pieces instead of at the end; it's easier to manipulate small parts than the entire plane. On the other hand, the ones in the super parts look like shit, as you can see in the picture, but it's the price you pay for not decaling/sealing.

So I'm building the PG Strike Rouge and I think I fucked up the legs. I'm at work so no pics but at the second bend at the knee there are two parts. One is ribbed and one is smooth, and the ribbed piece won't fit flush with while the smooth piece will. I tried to make it fit but just left it for fear of breaking something. Everything else on the leg went together fine but I feel I should go back and look at that joint. Just don't know if I fucked up or if it's like that by design.

Fuck off. If marketing research shows boys are more interested and more likely to buy a toy, it's going to be marketed it to them, just like it would be based on age, income, education, region, whatever else. It doesn't matter what they were "intended" for, it's fucking marketing. To jump to the conclusion of a massive hidden conspiracy stretching throughout human history to put the woman down when the obvious answer is right there is nothing short of insane.
>>
>>14537346
Considering that it now has actual runners and a fully colored plastic prototype instead of a colorless 3d printed display model I'm hoping within the year.

Prepare for wallet rape though, I'm expecting a PG level price tag on it and gypsy.
>>
>>14537458
they're more likely to buy them because of marketing towards them and because of the stigma of "girls shouldn't play with legos" its a cycle idiot
>>
>>14537391

But just get one already anon, topcoats will meld the decal with the model so it not really as noticable as the uncoated one.

Also it will protect your models from scratch and prevent your decals to fall off over and over. And it will hide any soft scratch gained from nub filling and sanding.

Yes, yes, I'm sure it's never occurred to the evil old white men making up the marketing illuminati that if their own campaign has proven to have the clout to visibly influence their target market's tastes, it might just be profitable to use it to tap into a completely uncovered market.

No, it took the bright young minds on tumblr to show them that the rich old white men what results their own professions, one very heavily interested in its own results, actually have.

And maybe if some especially enlightened old white man did notice it, he obviously wouldn't act on the lucrative market, because we all know rich old white men place their ideals (oppressing minorities) over money.

I actually like the look of them on some kits, but they're so large that if I were to leave them on I would still sand them down like, a millimeter and add a gentle slope to it.

HG or MG for first time gunpla?
>>

HG, because if it's your first ever you're going to nub it up/gouge it to fuck because you have no technique. At least then, when you fuck it up, you're only out 10-20 bucks instead of 40.
>>
>>14538704
Usually HG just because it's cheaper. MGs aren't any more difficult, just have more parts and cost more
>>
>>14538704
If you're planning doing anything more than snapfitting, go for a cheap HG like a GM to try out all the techniques on, because that way when you inevitably fuck up something it'll hurt less
If you just want to snapfit feel free to go for whatever you want

The Origin Zaku II and Zaku I are amazing, but the 2012(IIRC) mold Zaku IIs like the Johnny Ridden/Shin Matsunaga/Zaku Amazing are very good too, with a flatter head look that adds a more aggressive appearance than the Origin ones.

I have no way of telling them the amount of girls that come into my store and what kits they are buying. This is the same for every other store.

Unless they give me a survey to fill out after each sale asking what gender the customer was, what age they were, and what did they buy, Bandai will never know.

Observing customer purchases from a single store is not a large enough sample size to provide enough data to indicate a trend. That is basic statistics. Fucking this.
There is nothing wrong with girls enjoying gunpla as much as boys.
Only thing wrong is when people starts to inject SJW bullshit into everything.
I personally don't dig it but there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Nobel gundam.
Heck, judging from here, most people who got it are males anyway.
Thing is, you don't have to buy what the company told you to.
Girls in my local gunpla group just build whatever looks cool to them, not just bearguys and shit, and they haven't whine a single bit.
Gunplas, heck, most /m/ stuff are mainly targeted at boys so people shouldn't whine if girls aren't being pandered to.
Just build whatever the fuck you like and stop trying to find misogyny where it doesn't exist you stupid fucks.
And if the MS backstory is not to your liking or whatever, just make a custom with your own backstory.

You don't understand because you're not a girl but its degrading and a little humiliating that people EXPECT you to like the nobel gundam and expect you to build beargguys. Bandai sure expects it and so do their distributors.
When the design is shoved in your face like here you've got to like this right? Right??

Like idk imagine if you were a guy and into collecting barbies and they made this one fedora ken with flame t-shirts, optional neckbeard and fingerless gloves and every time you went to the toystore people expected you to buy fedora ken like it was the only thing available in the store.

The related link on the super armor upgrade item seems to a completely different model kit that already has super armor, which would imply the upgrade kit is for the old one...? This is confusing as hell

you're not a girl you don't know its a hidden privilege of being a guy. even in game stores they at the very least look at you funny if you go alone so I tryto avoid that.
At anime expo just this month I went to three different booths and got three variations of "do you need some help I'll point you in the direction of some cool kits" and they start heading to the SD section or some such foolery.

Its one of those things where you wouldnt believe it happens unless its happened to you or you saw it up close. Like how people think black ppl exaggerate about police brutality in america. I used to think "yeah right" till I saw a guy get tackled and pepper sprayed for breaking up a fight. he didn't even swing at all he was just a nigger so they assumed he was guilty.

Is it that hard to shrug them off and just ask them for what you really want instead? Are you really that easily offended by such basic human interaction?

Judging by the price of the super armor upgrade kit, all that is included are the armor parts. It's meant to upgrade the base kit.

There's another version of the vf-31 releasing in September that comes with the super parts along with the base kit in one box, and that's going to run at ~6700 yen.

If you look at things from a biological perspective, guys are more attracted towards violence and warfare than girls because of their higher levels of testosterone. If you're a company that wants to make a show about war and violence, you're more likely to make money if you pander to a male audience, so they make the main protagonist male. It's basic demographics. Same goes for model kits. They're generally things military related, which again, is more attractive towards human beings with higher levels of testosterone, so when there's a girl who's into that, idiots on the internet will try to be witty or relate to them because, again, hormones.
Basically, grow a thicker skin or accept you're a minority because of biology and demographics
>>
>>14540277
Yeah I get that and I usually just post here and tell people to thin their fucking paints and no one knows I'm a girl. I know I don't matter in this hobby especially in the eyes of bandai and that's why its frustrating.

I agree a little with the violence stuff when it comes to the show but definitely not about the violence of the show correlating to model kits. To me building is purely a creative endeavor. I like to weather and battle damage my gunpla but from a creative and artistic mindset rather than one of violence.

That's the pandering right there. A badass design is a badass design, regardless of the pilot. Many people, including myself like the bellpepper, and it's piloted by a badass woman.
>subtle things
So you let subtle things like petty comments and assumptions easily trigger you.
Sounds like the problem is more with your attitude towards the problem.
You should know coming into this hobby that it is male-dominated/aimed at males so you should expect those petty things.
How hard it is to correct their perception of you?

I think I'm failing to understand something fundamental here. All of the seam line welding tutorials I see just take easy parts that fit on eachother and don't envelop any other part when that is obviously the easiest possible case.
How the fuck do you weld seam lines between different parts of armor that go around the central frame? If you do the whole thing with cement, put them together and sand them down, you then presumably have to take them off the kit again for priming/painting. How do you both seam weld and paint a piece of armor? Do you manually mask everything but the part you want to spray on the entire limb?

Excuse the shit quality of the build, this was the first thing I ever built.
When looking at this part of a Zaku II's leg, you can pretty easily see down to the inside of it as indicated by the arrow, which means it'd be nice to paint these parts off the kit so you can get all angles, right? I'm not talking about painting the grey part, I mean the inside of the green part that you can see even when the grey part is in there.

>>
>>14540512
model kit building is entirely a solitary endeavor I have literally no one else around me when I do it
>>
>>14540500
More or less. Gloss topcoats make the surface smooth, which reflects more light, making it glossy. The smooth surface allows decals and stickers (mainly decals) to adhere better, and paint flows better on glosscoated parts when doing washes. After that do another gloss coat to add on a protective layer, and finally a matte topcoat to diffuse the light on parts you don't want shiny. Layers are key, and patience is a virtue.

So I'm messing around with my Jesta Cannon kit and I noticed that the peg for the beam saber holster fits into that hole on the back of the shield. I was thinking of shaving down the peg (about half its length) so it could rest flush in there. But in order to mount the cannons, I'd have to hake off the shield anyway, and I'm conceened I might damage the polycap in the hipskirt mount if I try to manipulate it with a half-length peg. Should I just leave the peg as is and put it on the hip, or could I get away with shaving it down?
>>
