***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I just picked up the airbrush and compressor in the guide, and I'm now looking at paints. Luckily, I live an in area where I can get easy access to both Vallejo Model Color and Tamiya acrylics. Is there any reason to go for Tamiya over Vallejo? Are Tamiya acrylics easier to airbrush?

Also, is it recommended to topcoat in between decal application and weathering? I thought I read it in one of the guides but I went to check back and I couldn't find it.
>>
>>14503901
Tamiya acrylics use are closer to lacquers, and airbrush very well with Mr. Levelling Thinner.

A clear topcoat can help with silvering when applying waterslides, and will protect the paint underneath if you're weathering.

They really fucked up with those garbage bag joint covers. What was Katoki thinking?
>>
>>14504799

Yeah, those joint covers are really bad. Even worse when you realize all they had to do was mold some parts in soft rubber, which you know Bandai could do since they did it on their old Dunbine kits from the 80s. It would cost more, but the kit is already retard expensive like all ver. KAs, just kick it up a couple hundred yen.

There's tutorials out there on how to make your own Thunderbolt-style tubing but still, you would think they could get it right for the MG.

I ended up with two MG The-O kits and I was planning to do a chess king and queen motif for them.

White King: uses all four beam sabers and effect parts, has a cross-shaped back fin (to look like the chess piece).

Black Queen: uses both beam rifles and has four smaller collar fins (again to look like the chess piece).

I'm mainly here to ask what color is best as "black", because flat/metallic black is kind of boring. Brown, dark red, or something else?
>>
>>14505179
Dark Red
>>
>>14505179
I'd look into very dark blues and greys i.e banshee/titans, i think if you go to red and brown it won't keep the 'black' motif
>>
>>14505179
>king & queen motif
Why not just pair a The O with a Quebeley?
>>
Is it unheard of to use super glue on a kit? I got Throne Zwei and the skirt pieces weirded me out, so I ended up snapping the tiny bit that connected each side together

I'm almost done with my GM Command Space Type. Its an older kit and I don't know if that's why but a couple of the verniers in the back actually just snapped in half after sitting in their backpack pegs for about 20 minutes.

Anyway, I did some experiments with coloring with my decade-old Gundam markers and then I top-coated it. I want to try panel-washing it next.

The scratches are there as part of my experiments with adding battle damage with an Xacto knife. This kit was basically a test-bed for a variety of things.
>>
>>14505248
No, military modelers use it all the time. Especially for Photo Etch parts.

It's just not as easy to work with as plastic cement and once it fully cures most don't like to sand as easily so you need to keep an eye on the drying times. But if it's just a tiny bit behind the crotch piece like you're describing you don't need to worry about that.

Also, there are some decals which might not show up well on a pure white background; to provide some contrast, what colors would be better while still being sufficiently "white"?
>>

>I have problems with superglue leaving frosting behind. I have no idea what does it. How can I avoid it?

You need to paint over it. There's no way around it.

Grey, or maybe some sort of yellow/gold.
>>

So I guess grey/white (Sinanju Stein) and navy/dark grey (Titans) color schemes, then. Thanks for all the feedback. I'll come back when I have something substantial to show you guys.

How does /m/ feel about SDEX?
>>
>>14506070
From what I know, they don't seem to like it.
>>
>>14505973
It's for things that are too risky to make as MG due to being too large/expensive or too niche. That's why the line is basically big over-detailed HGs. Too keep the cost down to make it less of a financial risk to release.
>>
>>14506070
A major step down from the modern bb senshi. No clear parts where they're really needed like on unicorn and exia, gimmicks inherent to the ms removed, lower part separation, giant gaps even bigger than normal for SD that outright erase detail rather than working around it, and the lines gimmick of "combine all the weapons into one fugly weapon and give it to an hg for some reason" is bland and I can't see anyone ever wanting to do it.

I do like the proportions more and I think I'm the only one who prefers this over the BB senshi stuff. This feels more like SRW figures than Gundam ones.

The MG Hi Nu ver Ka is goes really easy on you regarsing nubs, as most of the white parts are undergated (that includes the HWS extension set), while the nubs on the purple parts are extremely easy to sand

I've never done so ymmv
>>
>>14511322
Mainly worried about the smearing. It's bad enough with the "clean" alcohol-based panel line stuff, I can't imagine the paint-based ones will be better.
>>
>>14511342
If you try panel washing it can be quite messy if you don't get the ratio of thinner to enamel right. Especially if it's your first time doing it. Unless you're going to buy the pre-made tamiya stuff.
>>
>>14511465
Well, I do have a HG G-Self I could use as practice. I guess I need something I built but can sacrifice easily.
>>
>>14511488
I'm no expert on washes and I've only tried it once and I failed at it. But if you want my advice from my failed experience:

1. Definitely use the correct thinner, I used lighter fluid and that could have been a problem

2. If you're going to gloss coat the kit before you wash then definitely go for a lacquer gloss, I tried Future and that was eaten up along with a bit of the Polystyrene on the kit. I wouldn't recommend going bare plastic wash because of the potential amount of thinner hitting the plastic

3. You should 100% practice on a kit you don't care about or grab a GM on amazon for $10~. Alternatively scribe some lines on old runners and practice on that just to get a feel to keep the wash uniform along the line

good luck and I hope you do better than my first try
>>
I want to use topcoat to get rid of the discoloration in the plastic pieces that I've sanded down.

To restore the plastic back to its original color, does it make any difference if I use a matte or gloss/semigloss top coat?

>>14509378

>>

gloss will help bring out blemishes to be more visible

matte will help hide blemishes, it won't completely fix the problem of discoloration if it's a huge stress mark

Second build ever

It was pretty fun to build Char's Zaku, but something feels a little off about it compared to the RX-78-2. It feels almost not as sturdy.
I still really like it though, especially in terms of articulation. It's interesting to see all this movement from something as bulky as the Zaku.

Also interesting were the alternate parts that came with it: A head without a slot for the crest, and chest armor with less detail. I can only assume these parts are for modding the kit or a holdover from the generic Zaku.
>>
>>14511776
Thanks, senpai.
>>
>>14511899
I don't think that it's less sturdy than the RX-78 Revive. The origin Zakus are just have more articulation and feel looser.

current wip is the HG Zaku II Garma Custom and it's incredible how far the engineering has come more than a decade for an HG Zaku suit.

I mean the Origin Zaku has movable chest pieces to increase arm articulation and a minimalistic inner frame for the legs, where as the old Zaku has seam lines right down the front of the legs and the torso and waist have no articulation at all.

For each piece, for each connection point, the first cut with nippers should be on the runner. Once you have freed the piece from the sprue, trim the nubs closer to the piece, again with the nipper. From there, it becomes a matter of opinion: file/sand/hobby knife the remaining nub bits off the piece until it's either smooth or pleases you internally.

waterslides? cut them off (if the kit comes with them), dowse them in water for around 20-30 secs then slide them off with a cotton swab
wipe off the excess water, then you can use the tip of your mods knife to gently press the decal and slide it into place until you are satisfied
most waterslide decals are just like that, however, big ones will need a decal softener

I've been holding off on building until I get paints which just came in recently. I start testing on Thursday and pic related is going to be my first test subject.

Any anons here picked up the MG F91? Looking into it, but I would like a personal statement about it. The pics on Dalong look liked it holds up pretty well and aside from the oddly curvy face, it's pretty damn good looking. I'm not sure what the artist did to get these kinds of effects but they're amazing and I'd like to at least get better pictures, if not find out how the artist managed it.

This is still one of the best looking Turn A's i've ever seen, especially when the only color variant Bandai ever animated looked like trash.

Are there any good Pelican models that are of the D77-TC/I like pic related? I really hate the D79, but I want a Pelican model.
Alternatively, should I give up and drop 75 gbp on pic related? I've never worked with resin before, but I'd git gud if I had to.

price changes depending on kit
Jesta Cannon is a higher price because it also comes with the parts for vanilla jesta alongside all the 'cannon' add-ons.
My rule of thumb for Hobby Shops/B&N is standard JPY price +$5 (shipping)
If it falls into line with that the price is fair, if it's +$10 of the standard JPY price consider kit size, larger kits are worth the upcharge when you consider that you would be paying more for EMS anyway.
Anything more than +$10 is dodgy, though. Then my desire for the kit rolls into the equation. If I like it enough it's still technically a good price considering shipping, but if I can live without I'll buy it online/elsewhere later.
