***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

At least it's a customized suit from a previous series, and not a scratchbuilt piece of shit like Celestial Sphere had before.

Still bugging me on what the fin camera is. Is that a scratch build groove or is that a pre-existing one?

I know the v-fin's a Strike Freedom, but the head camera groove I don't know what it is.

>>
>>14460176
Because.
>>
>>14460176
Honestly, only the color scheme is bad but I guess they're stuck up with Shia's color scheme being green even though Shia herself wears mostly blue.
>>
>>14460176
I just now noticed it has Transient spears as shields. I would say maybe a different color scheme would save it but it still has that fucking ugly sword.
>>
>>14460176
Eh. Everyone is mad at it and I'm just like "YO I wanna go full Symmetrical, get two of them and make a cloak out of the bits/shields. Maybe even toss in an original Qan[T] shield in the center."

The color scheme looks fine IMO, dunno why everyone is so mad about it.

someone pls translate text in the red box
>>
>>14460382
Does the text actually matter? We know what all of those things are. A fairly standard jousting shield that appears loosely based on a kite shield, a pretty odd saber for close quarters combat, the destroyer lance that has a pair of verniers to control its direction as well as two gun openings, a hover unit in the tail, and the multi-leg vernier setup to hover at high speeds.

It's only the chest piece that we're currently unsure of. I'd say it has to be another set of verniers to help the suit back up, but I've been wrong before with these suits.
>>

That green is total shit and clashes hideously with the rest of the design. It's far too dark, almost military.

What they should have done, which would have been the OBVIOUS choice and absolutey printed money, would be to give Shia a GN Archer-based custom.

For the future, you could have primed the center part, painted it, glossed it, masked it, then sanded any overspray (don't tear the tape obviously), primed the outside and painted that red, then removed the tape. It's complicated but it's how you can get those edges to stay red. Don't paint red over black though as mentioned.
>>
>>14460883
>>14461055

The other way to do it is paint the whole thing red then gloss it, then mask and paint the part black like you did, then use a q-tip with a diluted thinner to clean the black off the edges. This solution depends heavily on what types of paints you had access to though.

Shipping from Japan isn't too bad if you do buy in multiples and don't care too much at when something arrives. ~$15 for shipping a 1/100 and a 1/144 isn't too bad, and if you bump it up to two 1/144s it only goes up by like $2-3 bucks

How good is the HG Nu Gundam?
>>
>>14462864

It's pretty damned good, it's solid as a rock, the weapons are molded in two colors, and while it has more than a dozen stickers to apply that's because there are two on each separately molded and fully articulated fin funnel. The only things that newer kits have on it is additional color separation in the face (the whole face shield is white including the eyes - this is kind of common for its era though.) The kit also comes with an adapter for mounting fin funnels on both sides, in place of the big beam saber.

The HGUC Hi-Nu on the other hand doesn't have as many stickers, but it is an inferior kit in every other way - the waist became floppy almost immediately, the weapons - which are the same designs as the Nu-Gundam's - are molded in bronze metallic and need painting to look like on the box; and the fin funnels are molded as two separate functional ones plus two sets of two that are in a V-shape, and can't be deployed. (so you need three complete kits to make one full set of working fin funnels).

I think the poster meant an Exia Revive as in the HGUC "Revive" kits - a completely new version of the basic Exia because the old one has peg shoulders rather than ball jointed ones.

I don't personally see the necessity of such a thing - I have a bunch of things on my shelf I'd like a Revive kit of before the Exia - but Bandai doesn't listen to *me*.

(HGUC S Gundam Revive when?)
>>
>>14463989
S gundam was a mistake
>>
>Steps on >>14463994
>>
>>14463989
Right but the peg shoulder was the least problematic part of the Exia, the ball joint being the worst.
This was resolved with new engineering for the R2 giving it a swivel for the legs. Exia isn't due for a Revive for a good long time because both the Amazing and the Dark Matter prove that the R2 mechanics are enough for people until they need an income booster for the next Exia variant. Even then their inner star of David might take over and enlighten them to the fact that there's nothing wrong with the mold and the goy will still pay.

I agree that there are plenty of suits that need revives first, and I think the fact that they've gone with Gyan and the Shiki so far is a good indicator. Especially since they followed up the Gyan with the Gyancelot.

I just hope that they actually insert some new kits between the Revive releases at some point, because we still have material that hasn't been covered in the HGUC lineup (where's my Full Armor ZZ? The Dijeh? And I could do with a HGUC Nightingale and MkIII too, since RE/100 is too big for my shelves) and it's been literally more than a year and a half since the last all new non-revive release. (Crossbone X1 from November 2014. Next one after that was V2 Assault Buster which falls in the "old kit with extra parts" category.)

Are these things using the old 1990 molds? Cause to get 3 of them for $12 that seems ridiculous if they were using the modern HG mold.

Guys when im cutting down nubs with a X-acto, should I cut so theres still a bit protruding then sand it down?

Been cutting some deeps cuts by accident, thankfully on non visible pieces
>>
>>14465479
I usually cut it down until there's only a little hump where the nub used to be, and then sand it flush
>>
>>14465479
Generally yeah. It also just gives finer control to minimize the discoloration/blend over it.
>>
>>14461883
Looks like the HiRes frame.
>>
>>14465507
It is the Hi-Res version. Not unexpected since the last one was form 4-ish. Shame the HR version's design modifications never made it into the actual show; it's a far more compelling design than the stock barbatos. The new color apps and details are all pretty great.
>>
>>14465488
>>14465494
Right guess I'll try and be more careful to do that when cutting, still a bit new but im doing a PG kit right now, just trying to not ruin it before I really get on with it
>>
>>14465479

It depends on the plastic. Soft plastic like beam effect parts, ABS frame parts and the psycoframe on the Unicorn kits doesn't sand well at all, and you're basically stuck cutting the nubs with a knife.

Yellow and white styrene you can use whatever method you like, as they don't discolor noticeably.

For the really hard and brittle parts, you'll want to sand rather than cut too close though. There is a special hell for whoever decided on Medium Blue being one of the main colors for Gundams, because that color styrene is really brittle and often doesn't mix evenly, so you get weird swirls in the plastic on top of looking like crap where it's been cut.
>>
>>14463399
I can never drop more than about 50 at a time on spray cans, feels bad spending so much on consumables that go away so fast. But ob the other hand I'm building my spoon library so I don't yet know what colors I really need, hopefully I won't have to rebuy all of them. But the worst part is that of all you have is a few colors then all your kits will be the same color and that would look terrible.
Since I'm new to painting I'm also trying out masking on a big kit so I'm using a lot more paint for the layers them one would usually do.

So far it's mainly the dark greyish parts of the kit, like the skeleton, cutting the nubs has been leaving small white stress marks for me, sanding when it's flush hasn't done much but in my efforts to remove them I've ended up cutting small chunks out of some parts
Thankfully most of the bits im talking about are now hidden, but just hoping I don't end up doing it on the outer parts

The Hi res was a kit of a gundam that already had two previous really nice releases the were cheaper (One of which even being in the same scale), it was fairly heavily redesigned and not accurate to the in show appearance as a result, didn't come with the gundam's signature weapon, was fairly expensive for a kit of its size due to a couple of factors meant to draw interest in it, and its main draw was just that it was diecast.

Really they should have just made it 1/60 and pitched it as a PG or PG-like line to avoid having to compete against the 1/100 NG.

Well yeah, it's where the faceplate got blown off. But the teeth look to be part of the underlying head armature, not just cracks. The pattern's too symmetrical and regular to just be slag and it follows the overall contours.

>>14467817
why do gundams even have beards in the first place?
>>
>>14467863

>>
>>14467861
I'd almost want to say that the teeth are an animation mistake. Based on the close shot, there's a gap between the neck-piece and the face-plate. On the wrecked shot, from the front and from the profile, we see that the teeth appear to be integrated into the chin-guard of the neck-piece.

If it were only visible on the frontal shots, I'd write it away as us looking a a distorted image of the suit's neck, but the profile shot doesn't allow for that.
>>
>>14467863

Because their faceplates are based on the masks used with Samurai armor.
>>
>>14467863
I always figured it was part of the 'scary samurai mask' motif. Though Barbatos' chinpiece actually makes it look like it's got a full beard.

>>14467886
>Though Barbatos' chinpiece actually makes it look like it's got a full beard.
Given the association of goats with demons, I've assumed that was 100% intentional. Also, the name comes from Latin barbatus, meaning bearded. So, yeah, definitely intentional.

>>
>>14467886
I heard that too, but I've yet to see any such masks. Most all of them are sculpted like an actual face or some horrible monster face. Or just like, chin guards.
>>
>>14467953
>$450 USD on Amazon
No, just no.

As for panel lining, I guess you could maybe extract the ink and try to treat it like a panel wash. Something like applying it with a q-tip and then using another q-tip with rubbing alcohol to remove the excess.
>>
>>14467964
The overall head and the v-fin I get, but... unless that's beard is supposed to be a knot, I've yet to see a bearded mask.
>>
>>14467953

Real touch markers are designed for panel lining actually, but they're kind of thick for some panel lines so what you do is after you're done marking the pane lines you wipe them with a Q-tip soaked in a tiny bit of alcohol to get rid of the excess. Do this only on either bare plastic paint that has been clear-coated over though, because alcohol will attack certain paints.

But if you can only get one, get the FAG. Eventually you'll be able to get the Kimaris for 25-30 dollars even off Amazon or at your local hobby store, and the VF-31J just had a super pack variation announced, so anyone who does not own one now, will probably just buy that one, ensuring that the kit is unlikely to sell out completely. And if it does, you can get the Arad version or the inevitable Messer/Mirage versions they will shit out somewhere along the line.

But once the Jinrai sells out that'll probably be it for like half a year.

I swear by Real Touch markers for panel lining, they make for softer lines and smoother transitions by way of staining the plastic ever so slightly when you wipe off the excess with a Q-tip. The ink itself is much more translucent than a normal Gundam Marker, so they blend better against shades of plastic that don't quite match the marker itself.

I also think they're an excellent way of making mostly-white mobile suits stand out from each other. With both the Feddie and Zeon sets you get two different shades of grey (one of which has a more blue tint than the other), brown, yellow and pink. All of these can line white and the aforementioned staining helps tint the white a little. It's hard to explain really, but the effect is nice.

Pic related, the second kit I built (it's nubtastic) which was lined with Real Touch markers.
>>
>>14469503
How quick do you have to wipe the marker ink with a Q-tip to keep it from drying outside a panel line?

I also see a "eraser" pen sold with Gundam markers, have you used those and are they effective for cleaning up unintended excessive marker ink outside the panel lines?
>>
>>14469568
You could leave it on for years and it would still wipe off with a swab with alcohol.

If it's an HG, you just bought it for MSRP and every other domestic seller is selling it for 30 dollars also

Anyone who has built the the HG or MG Ex-S Gundam? I'm kinda on the fence since the HG is an older kit and the MG looks like a monster.
>>
>>14474116
MG is an older kit too.

I have a couple of friends who built it. They both like the MG quite a bit, but it's a brick
>>
>>14474116

I have built the HGUC Ex-S. Yes, it is an old kit, and you really need to buy a package of Gundam Markers to go with it, because there are a lot of parts that are molded in all over white that need painting to get them to look like the box photos. The feet, the wings, the beam guns on the back, the boosters themselves, the hip guns, the beam smartgun... Lots of little detail.

Also, the kit uses the very old style poly caps, which loosen up in a hurry, so the kit can't really be posed a lot before it starts slumping over under its own weight.

Another minus is that the HGUC version does not come with the shoulder fuel tanks that the MG does. On the plus side however, it does not transform, and thus is nowhere near as fragile as the MG brick, and it does stand unsupported if you're careful.

i have the 1/144 version of that set, its great. the plastic is a little softer than Bandai but is really easy to work with and looks great out of the box. the Bazookas are actually blown up copies of the RG bazooka in 1/100, so its very well designed and goes together great. the other stuff is pretty basic, the gundam hammers have metal chains and the beam javelins were a little small for 1/144 and might need some glue on the beam tips.

They have the actual HG kit as a separate listing, the most recent one too (anime colors ver), so that MG listing is very much legit.

There's no way they can back out of this price now for those who preorder.

Yeah I'm getting in on this.
Fuck it, I don't care if it's a brick, that price is too good.

Fuck, I was on the fence about ordering yet another Grandpa Gundam even if it did have a shitton of gimmicks, but that price is just too good if it's real.
>>
What will you guys do when Midtown Comics finds some way to weasel out of this in true Jew York fashion?
>>
>>14475199
Their preorder policy says they'll notify you and let you cancel the order if they decide to jack up the price, so we're all good.

you do realize they'll just say its the HG
>>
>>14475274

But they have a separate listing for the HG. They can't wiggle out of it now.

sorry to burst this bubble you've made up but they aren't going to honour it

New bread?

I have the 1/100, it's ok, plastic feels a bit icky compared to the bandai/kotobukiya and fitting isn't the best, not sure I trust the LED inside my 3.0 to not short circuit and melt down my model. but that's just my paranoia.
