***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Is it any good?

It's going to be the second kit I've ever bought.

The shoulders are rather terrible. As though they are the shoulders from a kit 10 years older.

Other than that it's alright. Just alright. Looks good enough when completed.

All the images I've seen look like its got a lot panel done to it, but I don't have anything to panel line with.

If the shoulders are really that bad, I might just get Char's Zaku from The Origin to be a companion for my RX-78-2
>>
>>14477394

You can panel line with a 0.5 mechanical pencil if it really comes down to it. And yeah, you will be panel lining a lot on the Turn A. My advice would be to get something else, save your time and money until you've polished your skills some more, and just get the MG, which does a better job at doing the Turn A justice.

The Origin Zaku is an amazing kit and highly recommended, with its singular flaw being that you don't get a regular Zaku machinegun for it.

New to painting and it's a lot of fun but it was so slow with just one stand, so decided to expand my production line with two new boxes. Good way to recycle boxes, but the holes in the HLJ boxes were too big for my gatorclip wooden poles, had too do a bottom with silver tape.

TOO CLOSE
>>
>>14477417
Careful to not let those pieces touch each other.
>>
>>14477421
>>14477432
Don't worry, the two new boxes were once one high that was too high and the poles would detach from the clips sometimes, so when the pieces dried they were on two boxes far away from each other, only put them like that to be able to cut the other box in half.
>>
>>14477417
>>14477421
>>14477432
Why does amount of boxes matter to painting time? Just because you can set it up as parts to be painted -> parts being painted currently -? drying parts and move them as necessary between holding the clip in your hands?
>>
>>14477439
I can let more pieces dry concurrently, don't want to take them away from the clips until I'm done with them, especially on this current project where I'm experimenting with masking and need to do the same piece at least 4-5 times
>>
>>14477452
How long do you wait between coats? And what paint brand? I've only started withTamiya acrylics and info from others could help.
>>
>>14477461
I use Tamiya spray cans and am like I said pretty new so I'm not the best to give advice. But from reading these threads for a long while and looking up internet resources I think that the common wisedom is wait 24 for the paint to completley dry and settle, even if it feels dry on the surface it still has to settle. But that just might be for when doing your own rations with an airbrush. But it can't hurt. That's why I really wanted to increase my production line while giving pieces the time they need to cure.
>>
>>14477475
I meant using airbrush and between coats, not the final curing time. From what I read it was basically "spray a part/spoon, spray all the others, and by the time you loop back around you will be good for another layer". I take it that should be roughly an hour or so between coats?

http://hlj.com/product/YLSPPC-N08
I did the method of taping hella box flaps together, and I had tons of boxes before too, but you need so many to get a good enough surface area to use for many parts. This thing is shallow, so good if you have short sticks, and very wide, and I find I mostly have a need for more sticks than I do space, and I work primarily with MGs. It's also pretty cheap.

I got the topcoat, both gloss and flat

I got the brushes
I got the styrofoam
I got the mixing jar and mixing spoons
I got the masking tape

Is there anything I'm blatantly missing? It would suck shit if I ordered this giant package just to forget a 2 dollar item.

Oh okay, well noted then.
I never really got into painting. How good are the results from just using paint and a brush?

>>14477664
I had a lot of money.
And I was actually really into it. Then all of a sudden I lost all interest in them. I had amassed my collect after years of it. A few bought recently and such.

This was my collection at the end of 2015. Well part of it. There's about another 15 kits that I didn't take a photo of.

Depression got me into it, depression took me out of it. Now that I'm a bit better I want to start again.

>>14477690
I'll just do it then. Either the Operation V kit, or maybe this LBX Recon kit. Probably the LBX kit, since it's easily replaceable.

I didn't used to have this attitude until I came to 4chan. I wish I had someone to teach me these skills in person. The guide hasn't done much for me.
>>
>>14477780

What exactly do you need help with? Denubbing?
>>
>>14477787
I'm having a lot of issues with painting. I'm on vacation right now so I don't have it on hand, but the parts of the wings on Amazing Exia's backpack that need to be painted white are completely fucking me up. I keep stripping the paint and going at it but it's just no good. I have to brush by hand because I live in a condo, and I'll admit I've been a bitch and not primed it but gosh motherfucking damn it's turned out ungodly horrible. And when I look at my next kit, the G-Portent, I see that sword and have no fucking idea how I'm going to tackle such a large area by hand.
>>

>>
>>14477812

First things first, you must prime.
Second, masking. That's how you'll do it. Get some of that Tamiya hobby-specific masking tape. It is a lot easier to work with than the regular stuff, really makes a difference.

>But it's a curved surface, it's too complicated to mask

Slap the tape on and scrape the excess back with a toothpick.

Painting is 90% setting the shit up and having patience. That's all there is to it.
>>
>>14477823
Not him, but do you have to prime if you're hand painting over with the same color?

There's situations for small areas where you can just scratch the surface up a bit with some high grit sandpaper to put some traction on the plastic and then handpaint over it with decent results.

Reposting this from the /toy/ gunpla thread. The nip who put this guide is specifically pointing out the difference in formulation between brands.

It's odd for Shia. ffs she helped build the Kamiki Burning and to have this as her build. It's lazy. It doesn't even have the same level of creativity she had with Portent.

Honestly it hasn't been confirmed for Shia yet so I'm wondering if it could be someone else. That said, it's a fucking Shia suit and Bandai is just lazy cashgrab asses who think a moeshit nyan meido waifu moves plastic.

And it will.
>>
>>14478589
It's Shia's suit so who fucking cares, she was the worst character next to Chicken how are you so it's not like it really matters what gunpla she gets.
>>
>>14478656
Who else could it possibly be though? Unless Shia pulls a Maoh and completely changes her style, no other character except her brother uses a 00 unit, and he doesn't strike me as the cat ear kind.
And if it's a new character then that just means that there will be even more 00 wank from Shia and Wilfred. I'm a huge 00fag but it's just getting ridiculous.

Gundamplanet is really hoping that asymmetrical and green = Fellini, hilariously enough.
>>
>>14478742
There's no fucking way.
Fellini's models are green because it has yellow with red for an Italian motif. Not only that, but it is symmetrical because they took away all the things that made the 00 QAN[T] asymmetrical.
You could maybe reach out there and say that Kirara had a hand in it, but that's really fucking reaching.

I have it, it's... okay, the main problem is that the transformation leaves the chest cavity hollow, and that leads to serious structural integrity issues across the entire top half of the kit. Mine loves to let its entire left arm collapse and fall out. Also, the feet are too thin to support the kits weight, if you order it, put him on a stand, or transform the kit.

If you want a good transforming kit, get the Proto Zero.

Actually, Snake doesn't hold both the knife and gun in one hand. He rests the gun hand on the wrist of the knife hand (Which you actually can't do well on Gunpla, since the chest armor gets in the way) for stability when firing.

IIRC, the F91 is basically the smallest Gundam in UC, and possibly the smallest ever. We're talking a Gundam so small the Victory and V2 can look down on it...

Which is why you really really need to get your hands on a Sazabi to pose next to it.
>>
>>14481054
>Nice animation for the early 90s.

There is absolutely no correlation between the time it was made and the quality of the animation.
Saying "It has good animation for X period" is an utterly stupid and uninformed statement.
>>
>>14481060
The f91 and the victory are actually the same size. The hguc line made victory taller than it should be compared to the rest of the line.
>>
>>14481060
>IIRC, the F91 is basically the smallest Gundam in UC, and possibly the smallest ever. We're talking a Gundam so small the Victory and V2 can look down on it...

The Victory and F91 are the same heights according to their respective manuals, at least. Both are 15.2m

While you're technically right. Fleischer animation in the 30's rivals even some modern animation.
Certain trends during a time period influenced the amount of quality that was acceptable.
Art evolves over time and different levels of technical proficiency and different techniques become the standard for a time before the next transition.

It looks better than two other contemporary 90s animated films?

Man you sure convinced me!

It also looks significantly worse than Patlabor 2, which only came out about 2 years after it, so is F91 high quality for its time or is Patlabor the one that's good for its time? How about Ghost in the Shell? Memories? Macross Plus? Roujin Z? Porco Rosso?
F91 is mid-tier, at best, compared to those, and even titles made before it.

>>14481824

Usually people panel line white with gray, because black is too stark, unless you WANT that high contrast. Gray also works well on yellow.

For red it's personal preference. Brown looks really subtle and nice. Black makes for a defined panel line that contrasts well with a strong color like red. Gray is somewhere in between. Test them out and see which one you like since if you fuck up a panel line you can just wipe it away with alcohol.

So I'm finishing up my snap build of the Pale Rider and it only makes me more and more assmad that the frame isn't being used for more suits, even pbandai ones.
The level of detail is pretty damn good and the legs make use of new engineering so it doesn't suffer from the 90 degrees pain of most other fed suits.
Even the color seperation is fantastic, bar the handful of white stickers they give you for detail parts, but I assume they did it like that to cut costs because they gave you stickers for the exact same parts in different colors for HADES mode.

If you get the chance, definitely pick up a pale rider if it suits your fancy. You won't regret it.
Although the gates on the torso and the missle pods are fucking retarded.

I think I have brown and grey, so maybe I can switch it up, or do people usually panel line with just once color all around?
>>
>>14482200

No, people panel line with different colors depending on the color they're lining. Like I explained. Gray for white, black for darker colors where you need it to really stand out, etc.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind, friend. All black on Infinite Justice worked out well enough.

Mechanical pencil works. An ultra-fine Sharpie or manga pen is a good option, but straight black can be a bit too much for lining on white. One guy suggested using a grey feathertip art marker and that works pretty well for me. Also, invest in q-tips and alcohol pads if you so with a Sharpie. A lot of them

Unlike with most models, gundams don't actually need to be glued together (they're all snap-fit, unless you go way back), so there isn't really much point to glue unless it's modelling cement and you're trying to get rid of seam lines, or you're scratch building and adding to the model, in which case superglue should work just fine.

I know the glue isn't needed, it's just a precaution. There's small parts that I'd rather just stay in place.

The elitist attitude among new-comers to anime is so ridiculously autistic

>hurr I only watch cool manime from back when anime was actually good, fuck off moefag
>lol look at this fucking fujoshit watching his sports anime tits or gtfo
>mecha anime is all shit how can you watch that stuff

It's ridiculous how people try so hard to establish an identity within a certain genre for themselves and limits themselves by excluding everything else.

It's just as bad as those people who are obsessed with their image, who will only watch the 5 - 10 anime in total that are ""accepted" in the West's internet culture so they're not labeled a "weeaboo" and then say "Yeah man I don't really watch anime, 99% of it is shit, you just gotta watch teh good stuff like Berserk, none of that moeshit".

Or people who will only watch whatever show is the flavour of the season on /a/ at the moment, and call everything else shit or say people who aren't watching it have "shit taste".

Or those people who really just watch anime ironically so they can take screencaps and share them on those meme pages on Facebook.

I'm not saying you have to like everything and take it all seriously, but the state of the anime "fan" base in 2016 is absolutely disgusting, I feel like I have to isolate myself from it just so I don't get exposed to the cancer. And by that I don't mean conflicting opinions, because I enjoy talking with people who have conflicting opinions, but because of how the entire culture is 100% toxic
>>
>>14485564

That's just greater culture as a whole. Nobody wants to hear a differing opinion or go outside their comfort zone anymore. I don't give a shit, I just want to play with my Japanese toy robots.
>>
>>14485592
The main reason I enjoy /m/, especially /gpg/, is the smaller userbase. Needless to say there are quite a few absolute morons on /m/, but the nature of the board brings in less of the lowest common denominator than boards like /a/, /tv/, and /v/ do.

You don't see it all too often, but you don't have as many people just bandwagoning and parroting the common opinion in an attempt to fit in, and people who challenge what can be called the "general consensus" on this board always has an opportunity to discuss and debate their opinions with others in a reasonable fashion. Echo chambering is still an issue, but it's to be expected.
You're almost never going to just get a sole
>kys
in response to your post here on /m/ from some over-weight or under-weight spotty teenager, or a single reaction image along with your post quoted. People here at least kind of try to respond.
>>
>>14485564
I don't really mind a bit of elitism in terms of wanting people to watch more than just the few accepted entry level shows, but people disregarding things because of superficial things like genres annoys me to no end.
It feels like people decide whether they like a show or not just from reading the summary on MAL, and once they've decided they like it they aren't critical at all while watching. When you explain why you didn't like a certain show despite its cool premise you just get "you just overthink it, stop nitpicking".
>>
>>14485612
>but people disregarding things because of superficial things like genres annoys me to no end.

Yeah, exactly my point. I don't care about the genre or whatever, nor do I view a certain genre to be better or worse than another.
I'll judge it by merit of what it is, not by what it seems to be.
I'm not going to rate a SoL poorly solely because it has no action or mecha, nor will I rate an all male sports show poorly solely because there are no females in it and thus "gay" or fujoshit. If the sports show delivers interesting sports matches full of tension, has characters that go through a proper arc, endearing team moments, emotions I can relate to as a young male, and how it all comes together, -- things I look for in a good sports anime -- then I'll judge it to be good. Maybe the male characters are a little sexualised, or maybe there's some homo vibes. It takes place in high school and not university or adult level? Who cares? If you can't see the forest for the trees, you're the only one losing out.

I like to think I'm open-minded, but I'm still critical and I do have standards. They're just different for each genre.

I'm not quite sure if this is a valid complaint, but as big of a Symphogear fan I am, I don't really like this Yukine Chris custom.

It's because it looks too similar to the source design. I mean, props to the builder for managing that, but to me at least, a gunpla custom of something should remind you of that something, i.e. referencing, not an almost identical image of it.

I think I saw two of our /m/ builders making Yukine Chris customs, one using Heavyarms and the other using G-Self (the latter of which made the /gpg/ thread opener once) And although theirs were not as close to the source material, I liked both better for suggesting (or teasing? Can't think of a better word) the idea of the source, yet still looking believably mechanical, not too organic, so to speak.

Which one should I get: RG Aile Strike or RG Strike Freedom?
>>
>>14485928
Strike Freedom is a solid kit, though be prepared to sit down for a lot of panel lining and sticker work. The parts for the dragoons can also be a bit of a hassle to work with if you want to completely splay them out for a pose (They really lie to pop off at the drop of a hat). I think a few people have reported issues with the gold plastic used for the inner frame, but I personally never had any problems.
>>
>>14485887
genres follow conventions, if you don't like those conventions chances are you won't like the show. There are exceptions but the majority follow conventions.

If you don't like dragons and sword fights you probably won't like game of thrones. If you think slice of life middle school shows with sameface cute girls is boring then moeshit won't do it for you.

You seem to have misconceptions of what most moe shows and SoL shows and their conventions are based on your limited experience with the genre.
I'm sure you'd find fault with someone watching Gurren Lagann, not liking it, and thinking all mecha have the same conventions and themes as it, and thus writing off the entire genre.
Hell, your "sameface cute girls" remark also has very little weight, as anyone with no interaction with mecha would say all the robots look the same, while someone who has seen a lot will be able to instantaneously distinguish them from each other.

Building a FAG.

I'm wondering if I should just leave the panties white. It seems less degenerate and the panties decals don't actually have anything that appeals to me.

Also wondering where it all went wrong for me.

FUCK

The $30 MG Gundam FA ver KA preorder got cancelled by them.
>>
>>14486453

They already charged me for it, if they cancel it i'll be mad as fuck/
>>
>>14486471
They actually gave me the option of paying the rest of the money, but the only reason I wanted to get the FA ver KA was because of its low price. Other than that, it's a pass for me.

I was expecting this after reading the FAQ and seeing the price change,
>What if I place a Previews and the item’s price changes?
>Prices for preordered items are subject to change, and on rare occasions we may be forced to adjust a price before filling an order. However, we will never charge you more than the original price without your permission (we give refunds for price drop without asking you first, of course!).
but it didn't hurt to try and take the deal especially when I could just ask a refund if they hiked the price. I still might get the FAG eventually, but only if it doesn't turn out to be unstable or grenade-y for some reason.
>>
>>14486453

Yeah I just got the cancellation e-mail. I'm really quite upset, but it was too good to be true. Still, fuck those jews.

A business is a business I guess.

Are the 1/100 Barbatoses better than the 1/144? Or are they just really scaled up. I'm looking for the 6th form.

Alright squire, you're let off.

Can't have been that popular then. But then they couldn't just Jew its frame from an existing kit like the Fenice Rinascita.
>>
>>14486682
>don't want to fuck up a kit
HGUC GMs are like $11.50 on Amazon. Fulfilled by Amazon, free shipping. Treat it as practice.
>can't into painting
Plastic spoons. Also, use the Test Dummy GM.
>don't want to just snap build something
So do simple stuff. Mechanical pencil for panel lines. Grab a can of shitty topcoat and see what happens. Don't like the results? Strip it, try again. It ain't gonna be perfect. But on a single GM you're just gonna practice with, who cares if it is?

what do you think of pre shading your kit ? do this really help to have a more realistic kit or this is kind of overplay ? i dont see a lot of modelist using this technique in "classic" modeling. thanks
>>
>>14486950
Thats for the elyn Kshatriya right? Looks good
>>
>>14486950
if anythign it adds a nice bit of depth to the model and makes it look 3d even if photographed flat on.
Under lower light it gives a cool shadow effect. I think it's worth doing, and I expecially like your technique of doing a slightly darker color than the main color opposed to straight black.
>>
>>14486950
>i dont see a lot of modelist using this technique in "classic" modeling
uwotm8? Go check out any aircraft airbrushing tutorial, guarantee there'll be a think on preshading. Hell, even go to /toy/'s scale model general, the guide in the OP goes over preshading.
>>
>>14486752
>>14486798
You can get them for less on import sites, actually. I got a vanilla GM from Hobbysearch for like six bucks.
>>
>>14486682
>Can't into painting
>Can't

No, you're just being a lazy shit. Everyone can, regardless of if they want to. Skip buying models for a bit to save for paint if you need to, but you absolutely can try to paint. If it is a bad attempt then there's ways to retry until you like it.
>>
>>14485928

OK, some facts about the kits.

All of the RG SEED kits use the same "MS JOINT" runner - it's just in different colors for the Strike Freedom and I think the Destiny (Destiny is the only one I don't have).

The inner frame parts have a lot of sliding parts on them that you'll want to make sure actually slide before you connect them to the bending mechanisms of the joints. If you don't do this, you risk breaking the actuator parts, which means all that cool armor separation and sliding action quits working.

The yellow plastic used for most of the "gold" parts of the Strike Freedom looks like crap, but painting it would be a bit of a pain in the ass because of said sliding action. If you spray paint it, chances are you'll get paint in the sliding joints causing them to stick even worse than they do coming off the runner.

The Beam shields on the Strike Freedom and Destiny are supplied as clear parts with stickers you put on the *inside* on the shields. I fucked up on my Strike Freedom. Don't fuck up yours.

Also, don't play with these things. They're fragile. Their joints loosen pretty fast. And the stickers suck, and will take any opportunity to stick to anything *other* than the mobile suit they came with. Empty air if nothing else is available.

They look pretty damned awesome though, and contrary to what everyone else says, you can get all of them except the Justice to stand free with their backpacks attached. And the Justice can stand *on* it's backpack, which makes it pretty much immune to falling over.

>>14487461
What, did you want someone to reply with a Man Rodi or something? Did you forget your picture?
>>
>>14487683
Lets just assume it was 3 gm kits
so you got 3 six dollar kits and paid 18 dollars in shipping so 36 dollars.
but at 11 dollars on amazon with free shipping on a vanilla gm you could've spent 33 dollars and got them in 2 days.
>>
6 years ago I worked for a hobby store that sold gunpla on amazon. Back then prime fulfilment was new and none of the gunpla sellers were doing it so the prices were marked up pretty heavily. 30 or 40 percent up over the yen price was common. We'd watch the other sellers and adjust accordingly but pretty much you'd pay 15 dollars for a 1000 yen HG and pay for shipping.

Now a lot of sellers use prime fulfilment to stay competitive but they also have to price much more competitively and often they're comparable or cheaper than hlj and the like. Sometimes comparable when hlj has a sale even.

buying from hlj is still great due to private warehouse and making bulk orders but always check amazon first. The tides have turned.

I agree with that guy about the red, and the, I'm guessing, gunmetal on the forearms look either out of place or applied too thickly too. Yo, I'm back from my ban

I'm currently building a Seraphim Gundam, painted in Bronze paint. I really like that kind of green.
Not sure what color to paint a Seravee to go with it though, since I only have copper and brass paint and I don't think either would look all that great with bronze.

The more I look at the Origin coming together, the more I question if panel lining is necessary for him. Other than a few spots on the helmet and some marks on the weapons, just about every spot that could conceivably need lining is either already separated as a different piece or is mext to a completely different color. Any thoughts or ideas, /m/?

Though getting them to balance can be the real bitch. Destiny probably gets it the worst because his wings have so little articulation.

E2046 is having a sale right now on some resin kits, really tempted to jump on this 1/144 Cross Mirage. It's the cheapest I've ever seen any FSS kit go for at only $25 shipped.

Anyone know what the quality of e2046's resin is like? This will be my first resin.
