***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>>

Thanks, the missiles are really hard. They are a bit to small to mask, and trying to get the right amount of paint on is a bitch.
>>
>>14350600
I'm getting the Gyancelot so it can be a baller ass knight with the R-gyagya I intend to also get.
>>
>>14350600
I got normal HGUC Gyan and started converting it to Gyan vulcan, but I may get the revive for that since the proportions and details look so much better and seam welding won't be as huge of a pain. Pretty sure the only mildly difficult part will be getting the shoulders from Gyan vulcan to fit onto it.
>>
>>14350690
I wanted to replace the gatlings on an R-Gyagya with the MS Tank so it looks like it has extra propellant for boosting around. For some reason I don't usually like gatlings unless it's on an all-out almost-enough-dakka design.
>>
Is there any reason I should avoid the Build Strike Plavsky Wing flavor?

I honestly prefer it to the solid !Aile Pack
>>
>>14350828
Not really, I prefer the look of the Universe Booster.
My one complaint would be that SBS Plavsky wing doesn't come with the Plasvky gate parts, you need to buy the seperate booster for that.
>>
After sitting down and watching all of 0079 for the first time and finishing my Revive Gundam, I'm in the mood for an RX-78-2 Master Grade. Which one seems the best out of the 2.0, 3.0, and Origin? Also if one has something the others don't could you list them for me?
>>
>>14350902
If you want accurate to the anime, don't get the Origin version. It has design differences like a different rifle, mounted weapons, optional backpack, and no corefighter.
>>
>>14350902
Origin or 2.0 seem to be the ways to go.
>>14350918
I could've sworn Ryu mentions that the Gundam had a core fighter in the chassis in the first movie.
>>
>>14350902
Figure aesthetics aside

>3.0
Shield, core fighter, beam sabers x2, rifle, bazooka

>2.0
Shield, core fighter, beam sabers x2, rifle, rifle under slung super napalm launcher, bazooka, gundam hammer(ball and chain meteor hammer), beam javelin

>Origin
Shield, beam sabers x2, rifle, bigger rifle, bazooka, shoulder cannon, weapon firing effect parts
>>
>>14350918
Shit ignore. >>14350929
I misread.
>>
>>14350859
>seperate booster for that.
Which one?
>>
>>14350902
I like the OYW version the best but that's just me.
>>
>>14350918
>>14350929
>>14350930
>>14350941
How about figure engineering? Obviously Origin has them both beat for being the most recent of the 3, but 2.0 looks more enticing for having all of those accessories that neither of them have, sans the weapon effect parts.
>>
>>14350937

I've been meaning to get it so my robots can do muh karate bugmen attacks
>>
>>14350952
From what I've absorbed from /gpg/, the 3.0 has some issues. Origin is perfect. I've never heard any problems with 2.0 either.
>>
>>14350952
All three are excellently engineered with the 3.0 being slightly worse than the other two.
>>
>>14350969
>>14350982

just finished doing the decals/stickers on my MG Jesta, next up is topcoat. I haven't built too many MGs so far but this one has been by far my favorite so far.
>>
>>14351002
To start, "3.0" wasn't the name it was originally going to have. It was meant as a MG version of the 1:1 statue at GFT. However due to copyright shinanigans they couldn't go with the name they originally planned and 3.0 was the plan B name.

And it happens sometimes. Just because a kit was released later doesn't always mean it will be all around better. And it is hard to top a 10/10 kit like the 2.0.

>>
>>14351446
Didn't use enamel thinner. only lighter fluid. Might've been because I kept re doing the wash on the particular piece while the other one is fine. So its definitely not the paint.
>>
>>14351458
The lighter fluid damages the plastic the same way the thinner does, it just takes more lighter fluid to do the damage.

So, Gun-EZ kit when?

Also, say for instance, I am interested in displaying all the flavors of Victories, how would I go about doing so in order to spend fewer shekels.
If I'm not mistaken (and not exactly in order of appearance) there would be:
>Victory
>Victory Dash
>Hexa
>Hexa Dash
>V2
>V2 Assault
>V2 Buster
>V2 Assault Buster
Did I miss anything?

So by my count I would need 2 V2 Assault Busters, 2 V2s, 3 Dashes, and one Victory.
If my count was correct, I think I'd probably drop the regular Hexa because displaying an odd number of kits is easier imo.
>>
>>14351542
You're right. Good taste, I might add, and although I like Hexa best it's probably the best candidate to be dropped to save cash.
>>
>>14351583
If I ever do this, I'm definitely gonna splurge for the V2 WoLs and put them on my Assault Buster.

I have the 3.0, and The figure engineering is pretty good. It's more or less an 8 inch version of the full size Gundam at Gundam Front Tokyo. The poseability is pretty good and it's sturdy. It really is spot on with its 30 foot counterpart. Lots of real cool moving parts too. Can't speak for the 2.0, though.

>>
>>14351872
I worded it like that for comedic effect, but it's true. Gunpla are plamo, so they're reliant on good engineering to stay together and move correctly. The 1:1 model is "artistic", but much like any "artistic" architecture, it's entirely reliant on good engineering to be able to stay up.

>smallest customary unit is several centimeters long
>yards are 3 inches
>miles are 1760 yards
>???

>every metric unit can be calculated by moving the decimal place once

>>14351877
You do realize that doesn't have anything to do with the customary system. Which is based around the size of random dead guy x's foot and part of a finger. And the metric system still does streamline calculations in 100% of situations where it's used.
>>
>>14351145
I dunno who's your talking about but you can have mine instead.
>>
>>14351902
Metric system still isn't based off of anything, for daily life it's just as meaningful to say 2388 feet as 7278 cm or 727 meters. Again, it's only useful for science.
>>
>>14351881
>OVA out in August
>>
>>14351937
>engineering
That aside, it still does streamline calculations in 100% of situations where it's used. Customary units hop around from 2.5 to 12 to 3 to 1760 and then nothing. Even if you're only using kilometers, meters, centimeters, and millimeters, it's both far easier to measure and far more precise.

I too was going for comedic effect, but whatever.

I use metric all the time too cause I'm also a science, but there's no reason to get so uptight about a different system being used by some literal who on a California-based government dissenter's walking humanoid doomsday device online discussion quorum.
>>
>>14351957
For what it's worth, I did chuckle.

And it's true that complaining about it is just vain. The first post was just a shitpost anyways that was originally brought up because everyone knows the Gundam is 18 meters tall, so randomly converting that to feet and rounding it to whatever was pointless.
>>
>>14351972
I've just been shitposting that metric is shit too, so no worries.
>>
How do you guys paint your models? At the moment I've gone a primed every piece individually.

Do I then build sections and paint those, build the whole thing and take it apart, or do I paint individually again?

That is exactly how a Zaku Tank is made, really.

>>14352218
That's because that paticular engineer was only trying to be positive. AMBAC is a thing. Besides this, you do technically get your fancy legless Zakus some years later in the form of the high speed interceptor Dra-C, which was only decent at best.

Interestingly, both the Dra-C and Zaku tank share origins. They're stopgap machines of sorts made from wrecks of existing vehicles, namely leftover Zakus, Magella Attacks, and Gattles. You also get stuff like the Psycommu Zakus, which had no legs, but instead a colossal pair of boosters in their stead along with a set of beam fingers on each hand.

I know the 00 kits were a time of exploration, but the way the susanowo was engineered is so damn dumb. Everything is ball joints, even the connectors for the shoulder to bicep.
I mean, it was easy enough to fix by thickening but come on, this was a kit designed after the 00.
That aside anyone else own a Susanowo here? How did you decide how to pose it? I've settled for a shitty "floating but also holding swords" on the base it came with, coming up with a decent pose is pretty hard with this guy because of his limited articulation for the arms and knees.

The issue being I already have a backlog of 7 kits, and I barely have any space left to display them, so I need to get more display space, preferably in the form of glass cabinets, so I'll need to get that sorted before I buy more.

Can Confirm, Ground War comes with 2 support tanks, 2 ER Large Lasers, a Ground Gundam, and 2 GM heads, so you can give the Ground Gundam the GM head, AND so you can replace the old Ground GM HG kit with the newer head, since before it didn't have the translucent visor bit.

I've seen no pictures of it (which makes me nervous), but I read somewhere that it can accept the backpack (not sure if it needs to use connecting parts instead of the native connection the ancient HG kit uses), but there was no mention of the shields.

BN fag here.

Everything is sent to us prebuilt by our distributor now. We did however have to build the Fenice. It was a goddamned nightmare. Instead of sending us an unopened box, corporate sent us the runners and the manual in a card board box with some other shit we had to assemble. Some of the runners were broken, others were missing. I ended up almost getting fired because I told them to either send us a new one to assemble or they wouldn't have their display. Luckily my store manager stepped in and took the hit for me. She told me to just open one from our stock and build it.

God I hate working for this company.

This sounds like someone at corporate stole the Fenice for himself. All the kits are sent pre-built directly by Bandai. No employee should be building anything unless someone stole it off the truck.

Tiger 2 would be one of the updated Gelgoog variants like the Gelgoog Marine.

The Xamel would obviously be the Sturmtiger.

Try a hot knife, cuts through Gunpla plastic like butter. If you're trying to do holes, maybe try a soldering iron. Same principle. That and it's used for making bullet holes and such.

Heated plastic tends to melt clean, and cools really fast, which is nice. I used it on my Graze Ritters to make the shorter shoulder armors for the mass produced variant, since I didn't want to have to paint the teal color. Here's a picture of them for comparison, like I said, all I did was use a hot knife, just remember to let it heat up for a good 15-20 minutes. 30-40 if you want to be extra hot.

I got mine for $16 at Michael's with 2 extra blades, and a little stand to keep it from melting whatever you put it on. That and instant gratification, plus I got it months ago for working on cosplay. Cuts through Sintra and EVA foam like butter. They're mostly used for wood work, but I use them for cosplay and gunpla. That and a Heat gun are two must haves if you want to bend and cut most plastics, although I'm not sure how good a heatgun would be on gunpla, since they're so big.

The differences mostly in backpack and leg verniers.

Ah, so the J type doesn't have as many thrusters as the F?

Different backpacks, verniers on the legs for the space type, slightly different bottom of feet, leg missiles for the ground type, bigger bazooka parts for the space type.

But effectively very similar. Uses most of the same frame and parts.

The F type CAN function on both earth and space, but the J type is better suited for earth condition as it has better sealing around the joints to protect against water and a better power plant to help against earth's gravity.

I wanted to try my hands on priming, though I have been a bit confused on the assembly process. Do I assemble the kit, then priming? or Priming first then assembling? Because I do see a lot of people assemble their kits, prior to priming.

This leads me to my 2nd question. Would that mean you would need to disassemble the kit to paint?
>>
>>14359482
assemble to test fittings, disassemble and seamweld anything that will assemble back cleanly, prime the disassembled parts, paint the parts, reassemble, clear coat, decals, clear cote, donezo
>>
>>14359482
What you want is to have your build in "sections" for priming and painting
What this means is that you seperate parts into either their smallest bit or into pieces that would fit together and being the same color, that way you cut down on the amount of masking and repainting you would need.
It helps if you build first, but it's up to preference.
It's worth noting as well, as you're going to be priming and painting, assembling first will help you identify seams which will allow you to seam weld problem areas and then hide the evidence under the primer. If you haven't seam weld before now is a great time to start.

All that being said your kit does need to be disassembled to it's components if you want to be able to paint without a tremendous amount of masking. Generally, people will break down to components if possible but if you go the seam welding route also look at how those parts will end up, look at this Jim for example.
The obvious seams are on the arms, and the legs, but the connections are simple so you can split the leg into the foot, the calf, the thigh for seaming and painting. Likewise the arm can be seperated into the bicep, the forearm, and the hand.
Understanding that simplifies the process, and will help you decide how you go about priming and painting.
>>
>>14359534
>>14359567

Thanks a lot!

Some people cut off some (not all) of the nubs so they can disassemble it easier. I seriously do suggest you start off with an SD if you want to practice.

Can anyone recommend a good lacquer brand for airbrushing? I'm about to purchase the airbrush and compressor in the guide along with a mask, and the only thing I haven't figured out is what kind of lacquer to use.

Also, what do people like to use to prime? The funaka guide in the OP suggests using Mr. Surfacer 1000, but it seems odd to me to use a product meant for leveling as a primer.
>>
If I use flat paint for one section, and gloss for another, and then hit everything with a matte coat, will the difference be noticeable?
>>
>>14359594
The gloss+matte section might still be somewhat glossy, compared to the sheer matte+matte section. Try it out on plastic spoons and see what happens.
>>
>>14359579
mr hobby
surfacer 1000 is great. What are you talking about leveling? Some people use surfacer as putty for gap filling because it works as a filling agent and isn't thick so its great as a primer because it gives your paint adhesion and will fill in small scratches.
>>
>>14359579
What I wouldn't give for an MG Kapool... Hell, I'd take an HG at this point.

I use tamiya acrylics thinned with either mr.color leveling thinner or its own brand of lacquer thinner.

For primining I use Mr. Primer Surfacer 1000. Just make sure that you really thin that stuff down well and clean your brush out well immediately afterwards.

For topcoats I use mr.color and alclad l. Again with the mr.color really thin it down. It may not seem like you get a lot in the jar but you can thin it pretty far compared to regular hobby paint.

So airbrushed for the first time, and the airbrushed parts came up nicely, while the stuff I hand painted (the green) came up fairly average as expected.

Aside from that, I have this weird cracking that happened on the left arm. It's the only piece that this happened on and I'm wondering what I fucked up. Too much flat coat?
>>
>>14359903
>acrylics
>lacquer thinner
>>
>>14359920
Could depend on your technique. The paint could be shrinking as it dries and you could be spraying it on too heavily.
>>
So uh, arcylic paint isn't hazardous to your health like enamels and lacquers, right?

Would it be safe to airbrush in my room if I used acrylic paints, pointed the airbrush out the window with a fan behind me?

I recently moved and this new place has absolutely no decent space for airbrushing, so my only option is to airbrush in my room. Is it okay or am I going to wake up dead the next morning?
>>
>>14359934
>paint
Meant top coat.
>>
>>14359927
Your point? Tamiya acrylics are made to be thinned with either alcohol or lacquer based thinners. Why do you think they sell a lacquer thinner but not an actual dedicated lacquer line of paints?

Mr. Color is also technically an acrylic.

You can't thin all acrylics with lacquer successfully, but tamiya is actually made for it.
>>
>>14359934
Yeah I think I probably overdid the top coat and sprayed too much at once.

>>14359935
I've been airbrushing (with acrylics) in my room away from the window, I just open the window and it's fine after I let it air. But I also spray fairly slowly and softly. I also wear a cheap mask.
>>
>>14359935
Is not toxic but you don't really want to be breathing it. As for your setup, all that's going to do is blow the vapour around your room. Just buy a plastic storage box and a bathroom extractor fan. Put the fan in the bottom, wire in a plug lead and use flexible ducting to duct it out your window.
>>
>>14359945
Only a cheap mask? That doesn't sound very healthy, I at least have a gas mask like the one in the guide.

>>14359948
That's really great advice, thanks.
Does any kind of bathroom extractor fan work?
I have no idea what a plug lead is or how to wire anything but uh, I'll try. Thanks anon.

>>14359956
Also, my room is pretty dusty. Is there anything more I can do to prevent dust from getting on the part and ruining the paint job other than clean my room? Because no matter how many times I clean out dust, there's just too much of this shit everywhere, I don't even know where it all comes from.
>>
>>14359956
Yeah it's just the average dust mask. As I mentioned though I paint very slowly so not much if any at all bounces back into the air. But you'd probably be better off listening to >>14359948

>>

>>
>>14359961
You're gonna have to wipe every surface with a wet rag, likely multiple times, it sucks but unless you want to hose your room down there's no other way really
You could use some kind of container to put the pieces in to dry, just make sure there's a way for vapor to escape
>>
>>14360109
>just make sure there's a way for vapor to escape
What would be the best method for this? Some sort of one-way valve and positive pressure inside the container?

But then I'd have to have like, multiple dust screens for the air intake fan.
>>
Got an airbrush and compressor, any advice for the thinning? Paint brand is Tamiya acrylic and with the same brand of thinner
>>
>>14360152
Just be yourself bro.
>>
>>14359927
Tamiya acrylics are actually acrylics suspended in a lacquer medium, so they can be thinned with lacquer thinner. Mr. Color Leveling Thinner works very well for this.
>>
>>14359961
Wiper every surface with a damp cloth, do this several times. The dust could be coming from anywhere, your floor, the walls, the top of a wardrobe, from clothes, from bed sheets, from anything really and every time you walk around the room, you stir up air currents which lifts a bunch of it into the air where it could hang for an hour before falling somewhere else. Carpeted rooms really suffer from trapped dust. Just be extra diligent with regular cleaning.

Just a hole with a filter will do.

Yeah, just gotta be careful. You'll want to do it piec by piece, not just chop off the head + the armor all at once though. That might cause the armor to melt and meld with the inner frame. Not really, but it'll be a little harder, and you might nio your fingers if you try to do the method they suggest in the guide. It's doable but just a bit riskier with the #19.

so i just found something very weird, i opened up the box of an old HG Destiny Gundam and found that the clear pink parts have turned clear orange.

the wings used to be on the kit while it was on the shelf but i took them off years ago and they've been in the box ever since. for comparison the original pink runner hasnt changed at all since it was always in the box. im guessing it has something to do with sunlight exposure, or is it turning into a Heine colored kit due to neglect?
