Just watched the Kakuranger vs Ohranger movie - took forever to download, and the file size was disproportionately huge. Wasn't impressed enough to save it, or bother giving the other downloads a try for the time being.

I just don't understand how people CAN think it's better. Sure, they are both kids toy commercials and some of the newer Sentai especially might be pretty silly, but goddamn you just can't compare 90's Sentai to it's Ranger counterparts. Power Rangers is so completely dumbed down it's not funny. Japan somehow manages to make it's kid shows actually enjoyable, it's not all coddled and kiddy shit, they manage to make interesting characters, plotlines, etc. Even if the acting isn't much better, it's still certainly a step up or two from what we get in PR.

Honestly, I've not met one person who thinks PR is better or even as good as Sentai unless they grew up with it, so in the end it has to be just a nostalgia thing. I mean I loved Power Rangers as a kid as well, but that was a kid. It's great to remember it but there's no reason to go back to it now.

Again, I could understand some of these arguments for newer Sentai, but for the older ones, it's just ridiculous.

But that only applies to some of them. Most of PR's problems tend to stem from it being an adaptation (and, in the case of seasons like Samurai and Megaforce, the producer being a lazy hack). I can still look back and enjoy PR (as well as watching the current series), but Sentai isn't constrained by most of the problems that plague it's adaptation.

I like Sentai because it's cheesy and not cool. The cartoon sound effects and cute moments and then the mood whiplash to when they have drama.

Like look at Toqger. Nothing like Emporer Zed's arc could be accomplished in PR show, and this was in a sentai that was more of a cartoon than usual. Same show about children pretending to be trains had a sixth who had a catchphrase about wanting to die, towns wiped from history and of people in pain, etc, while stll feeling kid appropriate.

Toqger is kind of a mission statement about what I expect from sentai, really. Sentai in general feels like silly silver age comics that cannot be sold anymore in the west.

KissAsian is one of the better streaming sites for toku, even though it's mostly stocked to the gills with K-Dramas. Unfortunately a lot of the series use the TV-N subs so it's pretty shit, but good for shows that don't have fully seeded torrents and such.

Yeah. The beginning is just episodic stuff with no overarching narrative. When Prince Junior comes things start to pick up. And they really heat up in the late teens or early/mid twenties.

But at the end of the day this is an episodic show, so the overarching plot isn't the priority.

Episode 23 or 24, it's the end of the first major arc. The show outright tells you that. After this point it becomes more plot oriented and dramatic. Before then, I think people miss this, the show is about idea that modern yokai and modern humans aren't super different - they're both looked down upon by higher classes and their elders.

Do the Zyuohger girls have any gravure other than this one image of Amu?

So, I have been in this huge debate lately. I want to start watching Power Rangers (I watched a whole lot when I was a kid, but I'm just now getting back into it), but I also heard some pretty amazing stuff about Super Sentai about their being better plots and a more 'mature' and 'dark' feeling than the American version -which I prefer-.

So perferably coming from someone who has seen both which one do you personally believe is better?

And also, should I start with the Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger or just with the very first one. I'm also thinking of maybe watching the American one and Japanese one simultaneously, so one season of the Japanese one, and then the other the American one. And so on until I am caught up. Either one is going to take alot of time to watch, so I want to make sure I'm making the absolute best decision!

The original is better by far. There's way more good Sentai seasons then there is PR seasons.
Zyuranger is fine to start with if you want to see where the MMPR suits originally were a part of, but it's considered a pretty middling series aside from the 6th and villians, who're a right joy to watch. Bandora > Rita any day.

Most shows take time. 90s sentais typically aimed at a slightly older audience, start there. Jetman's a good starting point both for the story and because you can just keep watching the shows in order and have a pretty good experience.

The early 90s show's are probably the best way to get hooked in. The cheesiness fits in well with the era.

I think a lot of people start with Zyuranger because PR. Dairanger is probably one of my favourites from that time though, the kung fu was nice. Just pick one with a theme you kinda like, I guess.
