***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Since we all finally got our GN Archers, what's next on the NEVER EVER list?
>>
>>14234263
Well since the preorders are up for 00 and SEED 1/100s that list is growing smaller for everyone by the day.
I think the only thing on my NEVER EVER list now is the HG GN Sword IV
But I'm sure I'll cave and pay rape prices for one sooner or later.

GN-010_Zabaniya_144.jpg

I'm looking to recolour a Zabanya to the classic white/blue/red colour scheme but I'm struggling to find appropriate decals. I want a ton of decals, but I'm looking for small warning text and hazard-type symbols, maybe also large text. All of these in black/gray, white and red. I've recently found a decently priced decal website but now my inner sperg is having an autistic moment. I'm a gundam noob but I don't want it to have text that is clearly wrong. Like if it says ASTRAY on its shoulder then I'll feel stupid as fuck.

Tl;dr. Can someone point me to some models with a slide of generic EFSF decals?

Pic related. I love the decal set but my paint scheme is mostly white, so for instance the holster bits won't even show the decal. There will also be no green.
>>

Also, is RG red frame worth getting if I already have the MG?

I totally see your point. The plan is to put plenty of black-text and red warning style decals on them and then heavily weather the entire kit.

Zaku 2 and MK II are classics, you can't really go wrong with them if you've got some nice build ideas in mind.

If you're planning to go straight OOB the Strike kits will be your best option, Strike RM is probably the most solid MG in history.

Before hguc 199 was revealed I was curious to see what it was, maybe it was the blast impulse finally ! Then it was revealed...The FA unicorn destroy mode in red WHY !? It's the same kit just with a red psycho frame and the hyper beam javelin which you can get elsewhere and the only thing new here is generic looking decals, this is something that should be online exclusive in fact iirc they released the FA unicorn ver ka master grade with red psycho frame as online exclusive. So why does the hg fa unicorn with red psycho frame get standard release !? It's hogging up the spot for another kits like the sword or blast impulse ! ARGH
>>
>>14235054
The Unicorn will sell more than the Sword or Blast Impulses. It's not "hogging up the spot" at all. If Bandai wants to make the S/B Impulse, they will. Given the Force Impulse Revive, there's a chance they just might do it soon. Just be patient.
>>
>>14235070
All I was saying is that this fa unicorn with red psychoframe is hogging the spot that could have been another revive. We don't need another fucking Unicorn
it should have been p bandai exclusive...

I used to have a local store near my university. I mostly buy paint there but it was run by a friendly old man and his son that would always ask about the progress I was making on my kitbash stuff. I would stop by at least once a week just to say hi and browse their stock. Then they closed. Now the next best thing is a Hobby Town that's a 45 minute drive from my house.

ASSUMING YOU ARE IN THE US.

Unless you are doing the online contest you will need to bring it to one of the listed conventions, which means buying a ticket for the convention. There is an online form you can fill out and email to them which lets them know that you are coming and helps them figure out how many people are entering. But you can walk in and enter as well.

There is also an online entry category where you have to take some nice pictures from different angles and submit them where they will be judged against other online entries.

I plan on adding something to the waist, not sure what yet. Maybe just scratchbuild copies of Zab's skirt and find a way to slap them on along with the butt thrusters.

As for the arm thing, no can do. It's a cheap-ass chink bootleg figma, the plastic is HORRIBLE. I started doing this custom just so I could salvage the poor thing somehow.

What were they thinking with this design, exactly? It seems like it'd be easy to have a real pair of arms on the inside of the thrusters, instead of the outside. Would probably look a lot better too. It's not very good, and I'm embarrassed that I can't paint it because I don't own an airbrush, but I'm having a lot of fun building my first MG.

Really would be nice to be able to paint, though - I could get really aggressive in my sanding against those awkward small white spots from where you cut the piece off the runners, as I could just paint over it.

I might look into picking an airbrush set up, eventually.
>>
>>14236759
I don't like the strike though. The exia is cool, but it's not anywhere close to my favorite, anon. This thing with arms where I mentioned could be like a bulkier gerbera tetra with quad arms or something.

It's not that the Zeta Plus is outright bad, it's that it's an old MG from 2002 and was priced for its time. Bandai doesn't adjust older kit's prices for inflation, and HLJ discounts from the RRP. Add in exchange rates, and you get older MGs being pretty cheap today.

the Unit 02 release was just recolors with one duplicated runner of new parts. the actual Byarlant doesnt really share that many parts directly with the Custom from Unicorn, which didnt have very modular runners so it would be an odd hodgepodge of new parts, old parts and unused parts.

High Grades are easy with a good amount of detail. Great for beginners and those with a little experience.
There's an old HG RX 78-2 and a newer updated one. Get the newer one.

Real Grade is the same size as High Grade but with more detail. (Think of RG being HG size with MG detail)

Master Grade is bigger than High Grade and with more detail.

Perfect Grades are huge, tons of detail, and expensive as fuck.

if you're getting started, HGs will be your bread and butter. When you feel confident, get an MG or RG. RGs are barely less expensive than MGs and the RGs are so small they can be difficult to put together and detail.

I applaud your effort in this venture, I was going to do the same thing. However the p-bandai MG came out just as I was about to set out on it. Still have the GM and 2 GM Cannon kits that I was going to use. How come you didn't just get the MG? Or do you prefer 1/144?

it's alright. lots of pointy bits, lots of plastic on plastic that can get loose quick joints. putting the wings of light take up too much space, fit issues like most bootlegs, be extra careful with the face/head regarding fitting, might need to glue both halves together. needs a fair amount of work but worth it.

Old MGs have slightly more dated engineering, they tend to use screws in some places and occasionally (we're talking very rarely, my oldest kit is a GP01FB from 97 and it still has one) don't have inner frames.

The MG Zeta Plus (c1 in my case but the a1 is pretty much identical) is fantastic, its reasonably stable, the transformation is really well thought out and everything fits together well. It only uses one screw in each leg but even then that wasn't essential, everything fits together nicely and I think there is only one seam (you can see it in the picture actually!) that is particularly bad, the rest are reasonably easy to fix.

I'd recommend it but then again when you spend a while working on a kit you usually begin to love it.

Just finished a no scale Macross delta VF-31J from Bandai. Simple and almost all the color its made from stickers, but they are thinner than your standard gunpla sticker and its the fiest kit I have made a wash, I used Vallejo wash and even for the white parts I used Black instead of grey, grey was very light and the detail didnt show, and black in here didnt look like a Dalong kit.

Right now im working on G-Shelf perfect pack, the build itself its interesting even if the engineering could be better but holy cow, it uses a lot of stickers and even then it needs more touch up for some details.
>>
>>14238113
>Old MGs have slightly more dated engineering, they tend to use screws in some places and occasionally (we're talking very rarely, my oldest kit is a GP01FB from 97 and it still has one) don't have inner frames.

Yeah, no.

Older MGs have significantly less articulation and balance, much lower parts count (the runners might remind you of a modern HG), similarly low color separation, entirely different proportions (big heads), overall less gimmicks, and they didn't have full inner frames (which is what 99% of people mean when they say inner frames) until MG Nu. And they didn't consistently have full inner frames until MG Aile Strike 1.0,

If you get an old MG, you shouldn't expect it to be capable of doing much more than a nice standing pose.
>>
>>14237814
It's a combo of preferring 1/144 and the MG being way too pricey.

The sniper custom is another one of my favorite designs, I'm still salty that it appears in the box art of other kits, but never got its own kit. It'd be so easy to make money off the gm template too, since a lot of the variants share a lot of similarities with the gm, so they wouldn't have to change much for each kit.

>>14237670
As an extreme gm lover, I hope you'll post progress pics of your current work too. I'd love to see how that turns out. Gms need more love and attention, they've had a tough life, they deserve it.

I'm thinking of getting a nice GM anons for maybe customizing it. Point is I don't know which one I should get, (except the GN Archer ofc). I want one that is not too pricey and not too old. Mainly looking for an HG, but if there is an MG I'm up for it.
>>
>>14238198
Honestly, Bandai could just make their own HGGM for basically nothing since
1. GM is really cheap
2. A ton of variations
3. Most only have minor differences
4. Could make a Camouf, which is technically a Zaku so it would print money
>>
>>14238215
If you're looking for a "not too old" HG you're SOL there's not been a new one for awhile and they all use the same 90 degree leg articulation as each other. So hold your breath for HG revive whenever it shows up like the rest of us
On the topic of recent though, GM Sniper K9 comes with a lot of option parts and the EZ-SR comes with a visored head and a LOT of option parts for swapping and customizing alongside much better articulation as it's a new mold. Slightly different is the GM Thunderbolt with the whole backpack and slightly improved articulation.
All of those are standard HG price (Amiami has them at 1450yen)
While slightly more than most GMs (which are usually 800-1200 JPY) those would be my first look for a GM to customize, especially with their respective option parts.
>>
>>14238216
Yeah, they really could. But they still haven't, and it makes me so mad the more I think about it.

>>14238215
This >>14238248 anon is right, pretty much said most of what I'd have said.
I'd like to add though, that the gm striker and gm type c/powered are kinda old, but not really bad, they've got pretty good articulation.
There's also the jesta, which isn't very old either. That's a gm too, just a very advanced and tacticool kind.
>>
>>14238262
I would've thrown Jesta/Cannon in there, but it's a little further from "classic jim" than even the EZSR.
Jesta is a fucking dream though, I'm a little upset when I look at models I want like Jegan Ecoas but realize that they don't have anywhere near the engineering and articulation the Jesta has.
Jesta and Guncannon are really the only visor kits that come to mind when I think of recent engineering, and that's kind of sad.
>>
>>14238270
Yeah, the Jesta is a stretch, but I figured it should be presented as an option anyway, just because it's such a good kit.
I was pretty disappointed with the Ecoas Jegan and Stark Jegan too, but I guess that's what happens when I get the Jesta first, really set the standards high enough so that everything else after was in some range of disappointment.

That is incredibly sad though. Visor suits are largely ignored, meanwhile Bandai is shitting out more HG monoeyes like its the only thing they know how to do. The MSD line really bothers me, because it's mostly just Zakus with some new parts.
I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, they'd do the same with the gm too, since they're releasing that visor proto-gundam..

It's definitely in the realm of possibility, and the details aren't really there because prototypes but some of the new builder parts look like they might be visor-head alternatives?

Dunno about that stand specifically but I've used Figma stands before to hold up my HGs. You can see such in the background of this pic I made a while back.

Thing to note: They don't have any real weight on the base so if you put the model too far one direction or the other it'll tip over, so you have to add weight somehow or only pose your gunpla standing on the base, standing on the ground or in the air directly above the base.

Does the stand ever give in to the weight of the kit and droop down? I've always wondered that about them, they don't look that strong. Then again, I guess gunpla isn't usually that heavy anyway.
>>
>>14237999
Hey, aren't you that one guy
>>
>>14239025
Nah. They have screws in the joints so on the rare occasion they do droop you can just tighten the screws with a phillips head screwdriver and it holds just fine again. Most often the drooping only occurs after I've loosen the screws to change the pose and then forget to tighten them back up.

Thanks. I try to avoid using the stock "pointing weapon in direction" poses. Though I still need to buy a real camera.

I think he means the hologram finish:
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10114568

its a sheet of holographic sticker, akin to the paper sheet you put inside the panels of the MG Gundam X
seems like a good choice for the panels of the HG X and Double X but be aware, the material is thin, fragile and a bitch to put correctly
you will obviously also need to cut off the mold for each panel
I used it for my own hg double x and it came alright

Blues, reds and yellows are painted. I also used a lighter shade of blue. Then some very light dry-brush weathering. I'm entering this kit in a local modeling competition. It's my first gundam model and first time fully hand painting. What do you guys think? I was considering doing some battle damage and giving it a really weathered look. Still not sure.
>>

I hope they set it on fire and hang you from the rafters.
>>

anons, hold me, i didnt know a green cliff existed
>>
>>14240104

figure out who distributes SC Johnson products there and contact them, they can tell you for sure and the company name doesn't change
>>
>>14240541
is it that bad? The missile pods were a bitch to do with my cheap brush that was frayed but I think it looks okay. The rest of the kit was fine, I think I'm especially proud of the barrels of the gatling gun and the orange in the panel line
>>

>no eyes
>face is missing detail
>red paint between missles
I like the color though. just needs some finishing up.
>>
>>14240577
Thanks anon. I didn't want to use stickers at all
Not sure how to do the face because its too small to paint.
I bought a whole range of colors from my walmart all acrylic. each bottle was only 2 dollars so I got all the colors. I have a lot more customs planned

First time painting+bad lighting+hand painting.
If I didn't overdo the coats it actually would've looked nice the first time around.
I fixed him a bit though. I still need an airbrush however.
>>

try a grey Gundam Marker for the panel lining on the face. also might want to snag the other panel lining markers while you have the chance for future projects.

okay, sounds like you are serious about this, but no joke, read the guide. it goes through alot of things wrong with your model
first is seam lines, its fine if you really are that lazy or if some designs incorporate them into it, but for an older kit like that AND entering it in a contest? it looks way too obvious (look at legs and forearms)
second, i know this is so old it sounds like a joke, but thin your paints. the orange especially, has that weird texture on it that does not look good for the model.
lastly, put some details in, like the thrusters on the legs and the face. either thin your paints or buy the gundam markers/hobby paints. i know they seem expensive, but they go a LONG way of making your kit look better.

im sorry for the long post, but i wasnt sure if you were trolling or not. these are scaled plastic models, so detail is key to make it shine.
honestly, i would recommend stripping the paint and follow the guide to make it look really good.
other than the gaudy orange, i think the color scheme is fine

its always great to see someone try out a custom color scheme (something i should do more often), but man, im real sorry if it sounds like im bashing your kit enslessly, but it still needs alot of work, but honestly, from the bottom of my heart, good luck on the contest
i really hope this doesnt scare you away from the hobby

Assuming this is real and not just bait; Jesus anon, stop. Save yourself the embarrasment and do not submit that anywhere besides an incinerator. I won't even begin to list what's wrong with that kit but do you seriously think anyone ever did well in a modeling competition with the first model of x variety they've ever built, let alone painted? Take a look at pic related, now at your kit. See the difference? This is a minimum standard you'd want to even be competitive. Read the guide, master the basics andtake it from someone who learnt the hard way with WH40K miniatures when he was a 13 year old.

still looks better than most kits posted here or on reddit got more pics?

>>

Unless you have it done up like a hotrod, I'd always go matte. Matte gives it a realer appearance, and helps hide nubs, scratches, etc. Also if you're doing battle damage or soot marks matte matches.

The original HGUC GM and HGUC Zaku 2 are constantly very cheap on every site. They're basic and will teach them much if they decide to paint/seam weld/etc. Many start with the Gundam, start them off right as gruntfags.

Not that I'm defending that travesty of a gouf but if you are going to come in here and tell anyone what the "minimum requirement" is for a kit that will be submitted for judging, post something you made yourself and not a sample image for a resin recast that you saw on eBay.
>>
>>14241369
Travesty of a Heavyarms rather.

Not that I take it back.

The repaint looks okay.
>>
>>14241369
First thing I saw in my folder that illustrates a "complete" kit; with panel lining, decals and topcoating. Not trying to say I hold some lofty standards based on my own percieved proficiency, just that for a competition piece skipping one of the steps is likely to take away detail on what is supposed to be a scale model of a giant robot.
>>
>>14241420
You are definitely right. It just seemed a bit suspicious.

It IS a sexy Jesta, I'll grant you that.
>>
Pro tip for anyone new to weathering.
Don't weather the missile pods or rockets or any kind of weapon ammunition.

ammunition gets used and replaced it doesn't get dirty.
Learn from my folly.
>>
>>14241445
Unless it's a Sturmfaust.

And resupply is a long way out.

So you're saving it for an emergency.
>>
>>14241445
Maybe the pilot is extremely conservative
He/she doesn't want to waste precious expensive missiles and constantly opt out of using them because they're still waiting for a moment where they think it's worth using

I like thinking up backstories and personalities for my customs, you could try doing the same. It helps hide mistakes if you play it off as something done on purpose.

Want if the pilot is the one girl in the squad so all her male copilots are working overtime to make sure she never has to exert herself?

Or OR! The Zaku/Gouf/Whatever was hidden away somewhere for an extremely long time, that's why all the stuff is weathered. Like in Episode 4 of the Unikorn OVA. They had a fucking Gouf inside a castle wall with a moat running through it. Think it's missiles and bullets and shit got maintained regularly? There were even those Zakus hanging out in the destroyed Pegasus class carrier too! No way that shit was weather proof. Though why or how the Federation never came along to retrieve it is another can of worms. My guess is officials were paid off to keep quiet about it, since Feds are nothing if not corrupt and greedy to the core, a direct result of being chained by Earth's gravity.

Umm, how's he MG Strike Noir, for those of who that may own it?

Looks a little shitty from pictures.

The HG?

I'll probably not bother, but thought I'd ask.
>>
>>14241898
it's older, dated, a bit more square, flat, and simplistic and moreso lookes like they made owakara's lineart into a 3d model, it's incredibly solid and I still love mine.

First model I got after I rediscovered gunla on the internet after going years thinking I'd lnever build again because bandai stopped bringing gudnam to the west. I'm biased as fuck, but it's a nice mg. Not the greatest, but nice.
>>
>>14241898
It's based on the old MG Aile Strike. So you'll find balljoints for hips instead of modern pegs, and also screws.
As long as you don't compare it with newer MGs like Strike RM, it's actually quite good. The proportion and details are better and sharper than the MG Aile Strike it's based on.
Good amount of accessories as well. Beam pistols, twin Duel Gundam's beam rifle with removable grenades, Strike's beam rifle and cable for the anchor.
And of course the Noir Striker itself which is massive with some nice gimmicks.
So it's old, but it's not that shitty. And generous with accessories as well.

Can't say much about the HG.
