Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Reminder the gouf custom has a peg in both shoulders to make sure it can support the weight of the gatling cannon-shield fixture.

I am aware I forgot to put on the ammo belt in this picture.

Problem is the ball joint for the hand doesn't peg-out as easy as the gatling so I fear it will break someday unless I sand down the ball joint. Is this possible?

so i'm looking to get into gunpla soon (about to graduate from law school and thinking of buying a kit to have a project over the summer while i study for the bar) and have a question. when the guide talks about acrylics, will any old acrylics do? I paint traditionally with acrylics and was wondering if i could save some money by just getting some tiny dollops of my normal paints and watering them down a ton. i guess i'll have to color match them by mixing but that shouldn't be an issue.

anyone have any experience with this? i feel confident enough in my painting skills that i can apply them to a model but i don't want to use the wrong tools for the job.

Gloss is just a finish, the consistency of your gloss is much more important than what color it is. That being said the more vibrant colors are typically the best, or black. I've not really seen a gloss brown that looks great.
Go look at pics of cars, they are the most similar to how most people paint gunpla.

He's right, its the MG Zeta Plus C1, its a fairly old kit but its pretty good and relatively easy to work with. It still used screws for construction in the legs, its also very cheap I picked up the kit for about 2200 yen which is about the same price as some of the bigger HGs so who can complain.

Its certainly not perfect (and my paint job and work on the kit is very FAR from it) but the transformation gimmick is solid and it looks nice.

The HG is great. I used to have it posed on my computer desk alongside a GN Archer.

As I understand, the MG doesn't have the peg on the shoulder polycaps that helps it hold up its arm, so the Gatling Shield tends to droop. The HG doesn't have this problem.

in fact, the peg is strong enough that you can place another kit on it. Sadly, this is the only photo I have of this "pose." Please forgive the low quality and contents.

I need to dig my kits out of storage sometime so I can start posing them again.

Is there a better socket to connect the MG Unicorn to an action base than the one provided with the Unicorn? It doesnt have a lot of clutch so the Unicorn falls off a lot when trying to pose it

Liquor stores sell things other then booze, ya know. Like there's one near where I live called the "Stop and Rob" on account that it was once robbed at gunpoint like ten years ago and the store owner refuses to just fucking let it die. Anyways, I digress. They sold these cheap home made tamales that the owner's Mexican grandmother used to make daily and they were fucking delicious.

So yeah, just because someone's going to a liquor store doesn't mean they're just buying booze. Maybe he went to get a tamale and a bottle of pineapple Jarritos.

Not him but that isn't even in the same ballpark when it comes to detail.

What should be said though in the case of resin kits, is that they don't have any kind of goods parts separation and are fixed pose, so there is more freedom to detail up the sculpt. It's not a fair comparison.

No anon. Just no. Gundam markers are for small touchups primarily. Using them for whole pieces is a waste and just making things more difficult for yourself. Even if you extract the paint there are a lot of better affordable model paints for handbrushing or spraying.

The model is cool. With a little knifework you can separate the individual fingers on the giant hands, it has nearly all the gimmicks it did in the show, and it's fairly well articulated.

Drawbacks are that if you don't paint it is sticker heavy, the fingers have big gaps in them, and it lacks the finger fangs and the cloak.

50+ 1/700 scale aircraft, glued, fully painted and decaled. oh, and they are all molded in entirely clear plastic, and that was after 3 hours of decaling on that flight deck and weeks of construction of everything else.

Considering there's only two in kit form, the NG 1/100 and the HG, I'd go with the HG.
Comes with the leg dash parts which the NG does not.
You could try bashing the parts with the RG.
Would take a significant amount of work though.

I could care less about the effect parts but really wished the normal release kit comes with the waterslides included instead.
Shame they only give the shitty dry transfers.

They are kind enough to include an action base with it, though it is a basic one.
Would be nice to get the new one that comes with the Fenice Rinascita though.

Hello /m/

Poorfag here in desperate need of reference photos of the following SDF Macross mechs:

>VF-1J Valkyrie
>Roiquonmi Glaug Battle Pod
>Reguld
>Queadluun-Rau

If one could be so generous as to provide front, side and rear views of these models; any of these models, that would be super and I would forever be indebted to you.

Ps, concerning the VF-1J valkyrie, if one could not only supply front, side and rear views of all three modes(Battroid, Gerwalk, and Fighter), that would be great too, as all three modes are needed too.

Thank you.
>>

Don't just look at the art on the left side of the page, though. If you scroll to the bottom of each page, there's usually links to different views and lineart of the machine, like example:

>>
>>14173308
Basically if the marked surface is less than a quarter of an inch across it MIGHT look good.
>>
>>14173196
>>14173310
I used marker to paint the yellow parts on Physalis MLRS I posted few posts above.
Sometimes, randomly, they ended up good, spread evenly across wide surface. There's this one time where the result almost looks like sprayed-on, except for the thickness.
But most of the time they behaved badly,Which prompted me to put another layer in attempt to fix it, resulting in thick layer of mess. And that's with extract and brush method.

If you can access better method, for wide area (or whole big parts) it's not worth the gamble with gundam marker.
>>
>>14173325
Markering over another layer of marker is a sure way to fuck up the texture. In fact, the reason why I said markers are best on narrow surfaces is because it will most likely apply evenly across the narrow surface and you won't have to risk another pass over it.

I tried using oil-based permanent markers on a Weissritter once. The thinness of the marker gave me better results, but it ended up looking like cardboard shit. Even a spraycan will look better over large surfaces.
>>
you decide what i'll buy

5 - Koto kit
dubs- MG
trips - plane
quads - ship
>>
>>14173341
I applied new layer when older layers are completely cured though, so it didn't mess the surface, just made it thicker.

>I tried using oil-based permanent markers on a Weissritter once
Reminds me in the old days where I couldn't find any hobby supplies. I tried things like poster color or water color paint, permanent markers, industrial thinner, felt pen ink, etc.
Ah, to be young and adventurous. And stupid.
>>
>>14173361
The funny thing is that the alcohol base actually (partially) dissolves the paint, so you need to be careful even when you do that.

I for one couldn't be arsed with wet paints so I used things like industrial markers and shit. I still think the xylene-based black permanent markers can give an even, shiny finish if used right.

I like using silver gundam marker on stuff like vents underneath the armor and exhausts underneath meshes do make it stand out a little more or other small stuff like head vulcans, simply put pieces where you can be sloppy because something will go above it and cover the edges. I usually "prime" with white marker first too.

That will be my end goal of course. But before that, I enjoy the challenge of detailing a kit as much as my subpar equipment possibly can. But now I have a lot of fun mixing and matching decals from various models, Somehow I enjoy it more than usual decaling session with clear instruction on where they go..

Crap compared to recent bb senshi. They have large gaps that completely destroy large areas of detail, are even more heavily reliant on stickers than normal for an sd and have lower parts separation than other modern sd so they will require a fair bit of painting, they seem to be allergic to clear parts, the weapons tend to be thin and lackluster looking compared to bb senshi versions of the design, and they almost completely lack the original MS's gimmicks and instead substitute them with this crappy combining gimmick that produces a goofy looking weapon that you are supposed to give to hg kits.

On the plus side though they have nice proportions, are cheap, and for an sd have pretty nice articulation.

Everything on there that I want is like 15 to 18 bucks(which is fantastic, as the same products on Amazon are like 78 to 124 dollaridoos)

But I get the feeling friendly nipman will bite me in the ass with shipping fees.

Anyone with experience?

Pretty sure HLJ will tell you how much shipping costs are before you order, if that's what you're talking about. Just chuck what you want in the cart and it'll tell you. If you're talking about import taxes or whatever, I've ordered from HLJ plenty of times but it has never cost me anything more than the cost of the item and the shipping. Might be different in Canada though.

Some tips.

Don't weather straight onto bare plastic. Especially not with pigments.

If you are weathering, finish with a flat or satin coat to dull out the colors and blend it in.

Random dark smudges is not weathering. It is a dirty toy.

If you are interested in weathering look up tank model guides and pay attention to Chipping, streaking, washes, and pigments. Especially pay attention to where the techniques are used on the models (For example, chipping primarily occurs on edges and raised areas or areas that frequently come into contact with things).
>>
>>14175065

That looks pretty bad.

Keep at it though, you can only improve.

>Random dark smudges is not weathering. It is a dirty toy.

Weathering is not random. You can heavily weather and damage your stuff, but think about how such a machine would actually look if it was heavily used and beat up. Damage and wear wouldn't be random, there is a rhyme and reason to it. Why does it have random dirt splotches in the middle of the wings? Why is it so randomly placed in small patches all over the body? Why is there only dirty splotches present with no other signs of ware and damage if it is supposed to be rough and dirty looking?

For upgrades?

A corefighter is added in (Original Origin gundam lacked it until the upgrade) and some small changes like new shoulder thrusters and torso cameras. Like in the show, the true upgrade was the magnetic coating. The purpose of the additions is mostly to support that and improve the overall performance.

Anyways.
The things I can see is the blue you used needs another coat on some areas. Most notably the feet and chest vents.
Try working on your brush technique, there are a few places where the blue went off where it was supposed to be.
The backback stands out really bad since it looks like it didn't get any paint, plus the nub on the beam saber holder.

Other than that looks good dude. Post more angles if you can.

I believe most v. Ka kits are waterslides.
>>
>>14175582
Yep, sure is. I just got done "applying" my first one. I cut it out, dunked it in water, slid the paper off, and tried to place it on the model. It did NOT want to stick to the model, mostly to my finger and the end of my tweezers. Is this normal? It was a very tiny decal and I wasn't able to tell which end was the "sticky" one due to placement shenanigans. It's currently on the model, but I'm worried it's not going to stay/stick. How long do they usually take to dry?
>>
Hey friends I'm back from my ban. What'd I miss?
>>
>>14175643
waterslides are just that, not sticky on either side, you just get them wet, and use a brush to poke them off the paper onto the model, or at least that's how most historical waterslides work
>>
>>14175643
>slid the paper off, and tried to place it on the model.

You slide it off onto the model, not try to place it like a sticker.
>>
>>14175683
Thanks anon. That particular one I had to place due to its awkward position (the little red cockpit door), but I was able to get it eventually. How long do these things take to dry? Ghost of Zeon's guide and the thread guide don't say how long I should leave it before touching it.

I wasn't aware the kit had waterslides (my fault), but I couldn't really get any practice with gunpla waterslides with HGs as far as I know. I think I'm doing ok so far, but accidentally removed two decals while putting it back together. I might get some topcoat and topcoat it once it's done, but I'm a little worried since I've never used it before. I'm thinking about going with Testor's Dullcote unless you guys have other suggestions.
>>
>>14175049
Depends what you're looking for.

IMO bandai's are the best because they can transfom and shit, and just generally always have access to accessories and whatnot.

Hasegawa only makes the VF form, and everyone else's kits cant transform at all.

Barbatoses is the proper way, at least that's what i learned in grammar class. And thanks, I've really fallen in love with the design of this guy. I love how at the right angle from below, his v-fin and head look like a cowboy hat. Coupled with the cool ranchero like music from the show, and you've got a hell of an aesthetic. Just one more and then I have the easy ones to make (first form, first form with just one Graze shoulder, and shoulder and backpack-less final form from the end of the last episode).

My biggest complaint about them is probably just with the final form. The feet are hard to pose properly, and the Dino mace is an annoying shape and too end heavy, so it's hard to find any pose for it besides guitar strumming, or holding it menacingly about to strike.

Harem is when it's like 5 girls on 1 guy. Reverse harem is a bunch of guys on 1 girl, since Japan likes to label everything even slight variations, or some shit. At least that's what I always thought?

What are some good ways to make beam rifle effects? Sticking a beam saber in the gun isn't the best looking thing. I do have tons of spare saber effect parts though.

If I were you I'd strip that and start over. You've got orange peel in a lot of places and your masking failed pretty badly. The final product won't look as nice as it could be if you leave it like this.

This was fun. Kinda neat seeing how they used some of the bits from RG Exia's frame for the 00

Now for the 0-Raiser.

Is anyone else as upset as I am about bandai waterslides. I mean it's cool ver kas come with them but they don't even print the sheets anymore so once they're gone they're gone forever or you pay stupid ebay prices. They don't reprint and they don't even come out with them that often but nearly everybody likes them.
Most modelers use waterslides if they can get them so wtf? they don't like money?

Do you still need a breathing mask for airbrushing if you have a painting cabin like so ?

Samuel decal. He makes third party decal sheets. You have to cut them yourself though.
