***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I am in that part of the world where an airbrush is expensive and Tamiya paints are rare. But the local hard ware has spray paints. Their brand is Bosny, are those any good?
>>
>>14178966
>hardware store
No. Hardware paint is thick and just not for kits.

Go to a hobby shop, it doesn't have to be one with Gunpla, stuff with military kits is fine. Their paint is actually for model kits. Just buy those. It really doesn't matter what brand they are as long as it's from a hobby shop.

This guy was my first real try at masking, using both masking tape and the stock stickers that came with the Stargazer. the chest is an easy fix, the skirt not so much

As for the orange peel, I blame either the low 50s its been out the last two days or the Rustoleum I'm using for the light purple. I would use Tamiya or even Testors but this was the only brand with the similar shade that I needed.

Also I'm not sure how I feel about the dark purple. might just strip it and do it up in the purple on the legs.

Zudah? Zaku II Thunderbolt? Graze?

Question regarding Bandai reissues.

When they reissue a kit, in this case the 1/72 VF-25, do they do so with all the improved developments through its lifetime? Or do they provide the original "as the kit was releases" version.

I'm asking because the original VF-25 kit has really fragile wing-joints that they modified and fixed in the Tornado Messiah release. (Pic related, you can see the metal bar joint for the tornado in step 8)

Unfortunately, the Tornado Messiah is not getting a reissue, only the VF-25 vanilla, super, and armored packs. I want to know if these reissues incorporate the new modified wing joint or not?
>>
>>14179393
If they update a kit, it's a separate release, like how any 2.0 MG is a different kit than the original. Reissues are the exact same kit from when it was originally released
>>
>>14179393
>When they reissue a kit, in this case the 1/72 VF-25, do they do so with all the improved developments through its lifetime? Or do they provide the original "as the kit was releases" version.
Latter.

If the kit is updated they release it as a separate kit.

Working on the optic for this guy

Happy with the mount system for now, it actually stays on the rails and is moveable, I will add more little details to things before final. I'm not sure sure about the rest of it yet.

The front of the optic has a longer removable scope for the dmr mode. I used a drill chuck to taper the back of the tube which looks nice up close.

I have lots of other little junk to add I just want to get the proportions and stuff figured out first
>>
>>14179393
Other companies like Aoshima do it but I can't think of any cases where Bandai has. When they reissued ancient G-Savior and F90 stuff when Build Fighters was airing it was still the shitty ancient kits.
>>
>>14179422

I decided on the side mount because it triggered me that the magazine for the SMG blocked it when it was centered
>>
>>14179422
>I have lots of other little junk to add
Just wondering, have you looked at Tomytec's Little Armory series for parts?
>>

closest thing I can think of is sinanju ver ka to sinanju OVA, even then they changed the name some way (and bazooka obviously)
>>
>>14179431

That's a good suggestion, but I actually enjoy doing this stuff myself. I like figuring it out and making something that people can't pick out. Plus I just get a bit better each time as I learn more.

Yeah, that's called masking (also why masking tape is called that). That being said, regular masking tape generally doesn't do a very good job and I find that the adhesive is too strong and leaves a sticky residue. You probably want to use something like tamiya masking tape if you can, or at least some painters tape (although I have found that paint can get under painters tape)

The worst parts are that its molded as thick chunks like resin kits instead of hollow parts and that the shoulder and hip "Joints" are literally just holes in the plastic with a balljoint on the main body.

Also, the shoulder armor is directly molded the the arm and the feet are directly molded to the shins.

If it did then it was never seen utilized, as far as I am aware. The Slaughter Dagger kit is just a re-color of the 105 Dagger+Gunbarrel with a different backpack. So there would be no outward indication of whether or not they have the same arsenal, but I'm going to guess no

I just built the 1/100 Gusion this week. Akihiro and his four-armed Reskinned Barbatos can suck it. Those parts are never coming off the runners. Exception being that humongous halberd which will adorn another kit.

For some reason I dig IBO but can't make myself like the Barbs. The series has top-shelf grunts and antagonist customs though. Like 00 and Wing.

That 1/100 Kimaris Trooper can't get here soon enough. So glad I didn't buy the Booster.

Hey guys, quick question about topcoating. I've never done this shit before, so I wasn't sure if I should topcoat the entire model once it's finished, or topcoat the "chunks" (i.e., chest, leg) separately. Or if I should just topcoat each "surface" piece individually (i.e. outer armor plating). I'm very new to this and don't want to fuck up my ver.Ka, so I might end up getting a cheap kit to practice on.

not sure if this is how itll be mounted but I need to point out that normally optics dont go from big to small. The big lens goes forward while the side the "eye" goes is usually the smaller side. The bigger the front usually means the more magnified it will be and how much field of view as well.

I couldn't figure out how I wanted to do the longer sesor, if I wanted to be a replacement or tack on to the front or what. I came up with something removable like the other parts. The longer scope can attach and stay in place via friction to those two strips on top of the rail attachment.

I haven't built anything in like half a year.

Not since I realized that my house (old as fuck) apparently produces infinite spiders, so I can't leave anything I've painted out for more than a few hours before something has crawled all over it or decided to add web camo.

Is there any not super expensive (I'm limited on space) case or something I can put plamo and parts I've painted in to dry/be assembled without allowing Peter Parker's retarded cousins in?

Note: I don't display my plamo, I just like building and painting, I stick them in their boxes for storage once I've completed a project and shown it off to friends, so the case doesn't have to be enormous, just big enough for an assembled MG I guess.

Been debating propellent tanks from knee down Dra-c style but as the ein has spare frame parts I thought someone on /m/ might still have those left over.

Flat coat doesn't make your gundam look realistic, it makes it look like a toy, or a rich persian douchebag's car.
>>
>>14182395

there are literally no reflections on that car

that is exactly what flat means

nearly every source for the image you posted says the same

here is an actual semigloss car

>>14182402

nearly all military modelers flat coat

and almost no toys are flatcoated

what are you even talking about, put your trip back on and just get better you lazy shit
>>
>>14182406
I posted the flat car to show that's what you flat coat people make your gundams look like.

The semigloss car you posted is what your gundams should look like if you want realism.

Flat might look cool on military models, but the real jets aren't flat. We need to stop copying them. Semigloss looks best for gundams. Otherwise you just have dusty looking zakus.

>>14182414

explain why you think gundams being semigloss looks "realistic" other than you just accidentally just painted your plastic kit to look exactly like plastic

gloss will make it look like plastic. semigloss is a nice balance.

but heres my explanation on why semigloss is the most realistic option. It's pic related.

also, why didn't they flat coat the 1:1 scale gundam in japan if that's supposed to be the realistic interpertation of a gundam?

>gloss makes it look like plastic

there is literally a kit in this thread painted semigloss that is indistinguishable from plastic

plastic does not reflect your face back at you, which is what gloss does.

light does not change with scale, which is why people panel line kits, so flatter coats make the model seem more like the actual size it would be. Gloss doesn't really matter for scale because like a chrome finish it doesn't have any particles that diffuse light which scale differently.

because there are not as many individual reflections as there would be on an object of larger size

also the variation in surface texture is not the same in small scale, the variations are what make something look the size it is. There are compromises of all kinds with models, and flat coating gives the appearance of size to something that should be 100x larger

What finish is this? probably closer to semigloss in real life yeah, but when you are farther it looks flatter because of light diffusion. Each "panel" for example has several FEET of surface for microscopic surface inconsistencies to diffuse light. There's no paint flatting agent fine enough to do the same thing in for a small scale. That's why the finishes that are maxed one way or the other, either full gloss or full flat, are the best at replicating the look of a similar subject in real life.

Most people who make nice gundam models choose one of these two finishes because it produces the best results.

id say its one of the more underrated HGs out there. loads of weapons, loads of wacky configurations and posing options, stands for Incom/funnel arms, MG-sized beam sabers (the cheapest way for MG The-O owners to get more yellow beams), and its freaking huge.

biggest downside is all the stickers, besides the sleeves the brown/black stripes on the two versions are pretty nicely replicated with the included stickers, but you really should paint all the thrusters properly.

I just purchased a model kit of the Sinanju Stein Ver. Ka. I plan of painting it and replacing it's beam rifle with Unicorn's beam magnum.

Besides the usual tips, is there anything else I should be aware of before starting?

Do you have a paint scheme in mind?
If not, make one
If so, post it so it can possibly be improved upon before your race into it

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong pictures, but if I'm not this fella is looking more like you should grab a sazabi or nightingale even and modify those a bit.
Not that I don't think you could make it work, but more so it feels like you'll do a lot more work than you need to if you wanna use stein like that.
Ultimately it's your robit though anon, as long as you're happy that's what's important

>>
>>14182459
Yes, theres actually flip up connectors that are hidden under the armour but due to the size and complexity you'll need to decide whether to build it with or without the boosters unless you like taking the arms apart. Canonically though I don't think it is meant to have the fuel tanks in Ms mode though and just jettison them for transforming.

That's kind of the idea, the bigger one detaches for the other configurations. It basically snaps into the smaller one camera's mount when you add the long rifle stuff. I could just leave it on there all the time but to me the key gimmick of the gun is all about changing parts

Now I just have to add more details etc. but I can't do that until later this week

Thanks, the build was a fun surprise due to the heavy use of ABS and unique design for joints. I hope the joints for the binders stay stiff over time. Love the thrusters linked action.

I have to glue the left hand to the shield handle though. The weight of the shield kept tearing them apart. I kinda expect that, I have all HGUC Hazels from the same era and the hands are notoriously awful.
>>
>>14184686

the only problem I have noticed is that the rocket pod connections like to get looser because of the polycaps inside, but you can just make the peg a little bigger

Can't seem to get a good feel for the size of the PG Unicorn, how wide, deep and tall is it? I figure I can just about fit the MG FA into an detolf shelf with boosters, but hardly the PG FA with boosters, I think my only hope might be Billy shelves.

That looks like it's about twice as deep as the grey base, if not a little more. You''d be looking at a depth of around 40-50cm, maybe even 50-60.

The grey base itself is 21cm deep.

>>
>>14185154
Why would I want to use it?

Does anybody know what the purpose of the back beam cannons are on the FAZZ? Is it literally just balancing? It isn't a modular hyper beam saber, it can't fire in MS mode and the FAZZ can't transform to fire them in fighter mode. Why not just make them balancers like the head cannon instead of actually making them cannons? Seems kind of useless.
>>
>>14184172
Mmm, I'll keep that in mind for when I actually when I actually want to create an MS version of the Glint.
But back in present, what I'm mostly wanted for the Stein is the White Glint's paint scheme. Not modify it to look like the Glint, sorry for the confusion. lol

they're just beam cannons, the same model as whats used by the S Gundam. i dont know what you mean by "balancers", are you referring to the dummy head beam cannon and chest cannon on the FAZZ units?

im guessing the cannons were a later addition since the FAZZ's were meant to be artillery units and had little need for beam sabers; adding a couple cannons directed attached to the reactor with a higher fire rate than the Hyper Beam Cannon made sense. they can move around a bit and fire forward just fine while they are cruising around.

Guys... I went to HobbyTown to browse Gunpla and lo and behold, two man babies weighing in at a collective ton are SITTING on the fucking floor in front of the Gunpla preventing people from looking or grabbing any models. One of them opened his mouth and commented anytime I grabbed something from BF/Try. He then went on a rant about the exia needing some drive or some shit that he can't buy at Walmart and when I told him to use Amazon he got visibly flustered. I could not take it anymore when he said something about how a suit in Build fighters was unrealistic because beam sabers could be overloaded and I told him its an unrealistic anime and he yelled that anime must obey physics

I worked in a hobby store for 2 years. Small family owned shop carried a lot of gunpla. One really fat white kid always comes in after school drinking soda and eating subway. He smells awful!!!!!!!!! like holy shit did he not bathe since birth? Every afternoon he spends about an hour in the store just browsing, never buying. I'm busy shipping packages but he always comes up to ask me trivia about gunpla like "does this come with beam sabers or do I have to paint the plastic?" "What kit can I get that will look good next to the zeta gundam?" these questions weren't so bad but then he proceeds to talk about random gundam trivia like how powerful exias gn swords are and shit and asking me stuff like who would win in a fight.

every single day. beginning g was on at the time and he had nothing nice to say at all.

My boss bought a flat screen tv and a couch for the store so people could come in and play dw gundam. Big mistake. This guy would come everyday to play. At least he stopped talking but when he left the stench permeated into the very couch and the store was rancid for an hour at least.

I mean if you have the skill/persistence you could solve some of it's glaring problems by trying to improve the articulation.
The arms would need entirely new pieces though, as they're single jointed. The legs.. it seems like they might be just held back by the engineering of the armor, but I can't really tell with just the manual.

I was thinking I'd have it coming up from the water. I just need a back story. A post war Zeon pilot, turned fisher/diver, returns to his mobile suit during one of his expeditions. He was never fond of fighting and his plan was to use the machine for a constructive purpose if he survived the war. He goes under to inspect it's condition and finds it's has just enough power to free itself out of the sea. A small fisherman's boat would be juxtaposed to the collosus as the suit has one foot on the sand and the other rising out of the water.
>>
>>14186639
Even at that though, Efreet custom has that orange across the suit, albeit in small patches but the point still stands

You won't be. HGs are recommended first because they're simple and cheap, so if people decide gunpla isn't for them then they won't be at a loss. If you wanna work on something more complex then go for it. There's zero difficulty increase in snapfitting them.

>>
>>14188771
You need to gloss coat before using those tamiya accent color, so the paint better flow in the groove. Also, while cleaning up those lines with thinner, without a coat, you risk making the plastic brittle. (Rare case, however, you'd really need to put on tons of thinner.)
>>
>>14188757
>>14188782
Now I'm confused, should one clear coat or gloss coat after painting? (or rather Tamiya semi-gloss)

>>14188833
As far as I know, clear coat is just the regular term for all kind of topcoating? I say gloss coat specifically because flat coats produce bumpy textures, which is not ideal for panel lining. It should go :
Paint -> Gloss Coat -> Panel line -> Another top coat, flat, semi or gloss, whatever looks best for your project.
>>
>>14188782
>>14188707

Speaking of panel washes, think

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0027EN5WM/ref=pe_385721_130885171_TE_dp_2

is worth getting? I need to add a bunch of items in order to be allowed to purchase the vallejo thinner anyway since it's an addon item...
>>
>>14188849
Vallejo products in general are very good quality, but I can't speak for their washes, never bought them.
>>
>>14188857

How do you go about using acrylic washes anyway? Same as with the tamiya one (I don't know what kind of paint it is), glosscoat -> wash -> remove excess with thinner?
>>
>>14188838
Ah, I use cans and there's ts-13 clear and TS-79 semi gloss, should I be using 79 instead of 13 or is it all "the same"?
>>
>>14188866
I don't know why people use paint thinner when mineral spirits will do the job and won't fuck up your paint/topcoat
>>
>>14188887

Is that interchangeable with lighter fluid like I've seen suggested for doing things like sleeves markings with enamels?

Cause it would be sweet if one product did it all.
>>
>>14188872
TS-13 is gloss, I think. So it's better than semi-gloss if you want to use it before panel lining.
>>
>>14188891
Lighter fluid works for cleaning tamiya accent color, that's what I use.

>>
>>14189025
No, it doesn't. Though I am curious about how decal softer /setter reacts on clear coat since it's supposed to "melt" the decal to the plastic, just fine I assume?
>>
I swear to god im never painting anything ever again. The fabgeese is almost done. The paint has gotten so fucked up. The only decal im putting on it is the shield eagle. If I do anything else to it, I'm just gonna fuck it up evenmore. Fuck florescent paint, fuck it and everything it stands for. On the flip side though, through my zaku build and some minor bits of the fabgeese, i've really come to appreciate flats and how easy they are to work with. I also learned you can never do enough prep work. Never again will I say "well this is the only (insert color here) they have, so fuck it who cares." Mark softeners are usually mild acids or detergents designed to soften the extremely delicate plastic that is a decal.

Stickers use a completely different method of adhesion and if you're having problems keeping them on your model, your ham hands are too big for modeling, I'm sorry.

Need to check the filtration units for organic vapors capability. There's a real difference in ability to protect you from paint solvents or not. Also, if you are particularly neckbeardy that can interfere with a good seal. Full or half-mask respirator?

I'm too paranoid in general.
>>
>>14189554
Turns out the filter I used does not protect against organic vapors. I was spraying for a good 4-7 minutes maybe. I feel better now, how much damage did I probably do to myself.
>>
>>14189578
It 100% came with a big table printed out for which filter element tackled which chemicals. You selected the same one I use. You should be able to spraypaint for hours straight and never smell the slightest whiff of solvent.

Realize also, though, that some organic vapors can get at you across the skin barrier or through mucous membranes (like your eyelids).

I haven't received it yet but that's good to hear.

And no airbrush just yet for me, I'm combining spray can (for most metal colours, primer and top coat) with handbrushing. I can spend some time on getting good at handbrushing before making that transition. I think.

Main thing that is stopping me is the paint booth deal, I bet that if I made one myself it would catch fire or something.

You probably inhaled a lot. Organic vapours are bad, but wont kill you. I don't have any trouble with stickers, in fact I make sure to wash my hands and the parts so that there aren't any oils on the plastic that will cause the sticker to peel off over time. I was just curious if the softner made the decals blend in better with the plastic since even though I take to the time to cut away the excess part of the sticker and really make sure it's on there, occasionally it still looks visibly like something just stuck on there. I mean I know that is what a sticker is, something you stick on something but I just wanted to know if I could make it look better than I already do. I wish more kits came with waterslides. I just finished my HG Protoype Dom and I think it would have looked a lot nicer with water slides than stickers. I still really like how it came out though, anyway enough rambling, thanks for the info guys.
