It amazes me how they put so much effort into mimicking the control room, Mon Mothma, the trooper costumes, the klaxon, the imperial interior style... then they just completely ignore how Mos Eisley was shown and have headscarves and APCs and tight dingy alleys under gloomy lighting straight out of Zero Dark Thirty.

Not to mention all them shots of the MC clearly meant to evoke Hunger Games.

Trailer makes the movie seem incredibly uninspired. Plus way too much time spent flaunting the girl lead (without making her seem interesting in any way too, but maybe that's just me), like, I was expecting it to be about a group of people.

But I guess we'll get more trailers and my opinion could change. Just didn't get me excited like I'd expect from a Star Wars trailer.

Though admittedly, the Death Star plan theft just seems like something at the very bottom of the barrel of exciting Star Wars stories they could've told and I mostly forgot about this movie as soon as they announced it as a result.

In my opinion, choosing something like the Death Star plan heist is perfect for making a movie, precisely because of the vague nature of it all.
That leaves a lot up to the writers/designers for this film, as the only line referencing the heist indicate "many bothans died". You can go a lot of places with this premise, and without the plans you can't blow up the death star in the first movie, which is what starts to push the war in the Rebels favor, so it's at least semi-important as far as the original trilogy goes.

Do you know any farmkids who had their own cropduster on top of owning a truck? This does make me realize that while Rey is sacked with a life where she's living day to day surviving on the worth of the scrap she salvages, you'd expect her to throw BB8 under the bus hard and fast for a meal first and foremost. We're never going to see anything but mostly attractive 20-somethings in Star Wars films from now on are we? All the main cast and antagonists are going to be 20 something or young looking 30's. I can understand that from a box office stand point. They want the Young Adult audience. But it feels rather silly to see a world where the most important people are so young. It's very "movie-ish".

The world tends to be run by middle age and old men. Tarkin is by far the best villain in Star Wars so far, and he was just some old british general. A character like him were to appear in a new Star Wars film, he'd be played by some attractive 27 year old. A young guy just can't pull off the role of powerful and experienced military leader like that. And of course it would take decades to reach that level.

That's just how it goes. Youth sells blockbusters, and Hollywood hinges mostly on making movies of things that have already been successful. One major source is old movies or shows they can update.
