What do you think of the new MC?
>>
> All that clearly Iraq/Afghanistan inspired footage

It amazes me how they put so much effort into mimicking the control room, Mon Mothma, the trooper costumes, the klaxon, the imperial interior style... then they just completely ignore how Mos Eisley was shown and have headscarves and APCs and tight dingy alleys under gloomy lighting straight out of Zero Dark Thirty.

Not to mention all them shots of the MC clearly meant to evoke Hunger Games.

I mean, they have to have someone who's an incompetent blowhard to shout orders, right?

I immediately thought of how much more aesthetically pleasing all the gear and uniforms were compared to TFA. Even being able to see the original TIE Fighters (and maybe one other model of Imperial spacecraft) would be an improvement over the one-fighter show per side in TFA.

I can't imagine there was any way that was going to survive--that, and the game TIE Fighter were always on the chopping block. A shame.

At least they're not retconning the old stormtrooper armor/uniforms out of existence.

Not him but the fondness people have for Katarn's crazy adventures should prove there's interest in having his existence as, at the very least the Dark Forces era mercenary under Alliance employ, recognized by the Disney canon.

I don't mind if he's reduced to literallywho status in the Disney canon, they already did that with Jake Farrell, the most literallywho A-Wing pilot to ever literallywho his way into a name.

>>
>>14093092

I remember those ships from KotOR. So they're still using ship designs that are several thousand years old?

When you think about it (and count the EU), the Star Wars universe is kind of... stagnant. Politically things get shuffled around every few hundred years, but technologically and culturally, nothing ever really changes.
>>
>>14093121

WELCOME TO THA KANJIKLUB

I wonder what new dank memes will emerge from this flick
>>
>>14093125
i mean, even in the KotOR era they have basically godlike powers in terms of being able to traverse the galaxy efficiently, build anything they want, terraform planets, manipulate gravity, etc.

at that point where do you go?

Well, look who owns both Star Wars and Marvel.

Disney is easily the most powerful entertainment company in the world. I mean, it kind of already was, but now there's no stopping it even if you wanted to bar a massive economy-destroying disaster.
>>
>>14093136

Thousands of years ago people dreamed of flying, of bringing the dead back to life etc. All of that is routine now (for a given value of them at least), so we have new dreams that build on our experiences, with terraforming, gravity manipulation, FTL being some of the bigger dreams. Anyone living in time with them would be the same, dreaming stuff that we can't, but built on those being everyday. We can't say what they are because of it, but there's no reason to assume there isn't more.

How is she not? The definition of a Mary Sue is a character who is nearly perfect and flawless with the ability to do everything right and save the day.* She never struggles to learn anything, she's good at everything as soon as tries it. The only times she struggles is when it takes her a couple tries to persuade the stormtrooper to let her out and the time she gets scared by a lightsaber, Of course the next time she touched the lightsaber she can go head to head with no a Sith just fine with 0 training. I mean even Luke got a fucking training montage.

*(Being a self-insert of the author is also included in the definition sometimes but it's not required, and I doubt JJ Abrams self inserts as twenty-something year old girl)

>>
>>14093255

Luke didn't even get a training montage, since there was just the one bit of him hitting laser's back and no actual montage.
>>
>>14093271
One of the main problems with Rey is that she's played by an ugly cunt.
>>
>>14093274
Luke spent a month on Dagobah training under Yoda in TESB. And Luke needed guidance from Obi-Wan's Force Ghost to use the Force to hit the thermal exhaust port.

>>14093269
Are you forgetting how she magically knew how to use Mind Tricks and telekinesis within literally half a day's time if not less of encountering Maze and learning about the Force from simply touching Anakin's older lightsaber?

Everything about Rey in TFA exaggerates how super competent, powerful, and gifted she is that its impossible to take her seriously.
>>
>>14093285
why do you memorize a thing you hate
>>
>>14093279
British people look like lizards, so its not surprising.

>>14093269
Are you ignoring how she's portrayed as knowing how to use Force powers without any actual training or experience, how she apparently knows how to use and pilot the Falcon better then Han fucking Solo, or how she constantly saves and frees herself from danger while the guys are left in the dust and the film even goes off in such a direction that most people assumed Finn was essentially comedic relief until the very end?

Her character was aggravating.
>>
>>14093285
>how she magically knew
she's an in universe weeb, anon. she knew what to do because she read stories about all this shit that happened, about how the jedi could do shit like that and how leia was so badass and luke fought darth vader and they got helped by a cool smuggler named han

>she read stories
No she didn't. Its literally shown she had never heard of the Jedi or understand what the Force was until she meet Maze and had it explained to her.

Because that's all what Maze was, a literal, walking, talking plot device for exposition on the Force. And she did all of that within the span of less than a day's time from Kylo's assault to breaking out of captivity when Han and the others came to rescue her.

There's no justification for this.
>>
>>14093303
>>14093291
Why is anyone angry for proving you wrong, ESL poster?
>>
>>14093299
the real explanation is that she is either Luke or Leia's daughter. That she was training as a jedi when Ben flipped to the Dark Side. Luke takes her and wipes her memory. Giving her a crappy remake of his and Anakin's childhood.
>>
>>14093308
From a literary prospective, any set up in Episode VIII isn't going to legitimatize the issues that Episode VII had. Even if it explains that Rey was some former Jedi trainee or prior apprentice, its pretty sloppy writing.
>>
>>14092821
Is that fucking Ben Mendelsohn? Fuck yes, that uniform and shot alone is great, but I'm even more on board now.
>>
>>14093285
What really annoyed me about Rey is that they went out of their way to ensure that she didn't need help from anyone in TFA. Get accosted by some thugs? She beats them up without a sweat. Get captured by the First Order? She pulls a Jedi mind trick out of her ass. Getting her ass kicked by Kylo Ren? She magically learns the Force Cheat Codes.

I mean, Luke needed to get his ass saved at least 3-4 times in ANH alone. Hell, the climax of the OT is him getting his ass saved by Darth Vader!
>>
>>14093299
I watch /m/ shows. By your logic if aliens came and told me I needed to pilot a mecha to save the galaxy I'd be the greatest mecha pilot who ever lived. Hearing stories =/= knowing how to do the things in those stories at an expert level.
>>
I like it
>>
>>14093214

TFA was a super safe retread of ANH, just shinier. All it did was pander to nostalgia for the original trilogy without trying anything particularly new or interesting.
>>
>>14093285
>Everything about Rey in TFA exaggerates how super competent, powerful, and gifted she is that its impossible to take her seriously.

...good thing that she's a character in a magical adventure movie for children, amirite?
>>
>>14093320
still better than the prequels.
>>
>>14093308
Wasn't she left on not-Tatooine when she was like 5? I mean even if she is Luke's daughter, I doubt she would have received expert level training at five. And as mentioned before, Luke got a training montage.
>>
>people still having difficulty accepting that she's literally the force awakened

>as in a walking agent of the force itself

>as in "modern day Jedi, as written by the folks at Marvel."

>as in WHY DO I HAVE TO BE THE MAGICAL SPACE SAMURAI angstbait rather than the second coming of space jesus / Anakin reincarnated

Oh wait, she did thing. That means she's flawless and thus totally a Sue right?
>>
Chronologically speaking when exactly did this take place before ANH?
>>
>>14093315
Of course those were problems. She wasn't told what a Jedi Mind Trick was or how they work, but she pulled it off. How to use mind over matter? Never explained but she snatches Anakin's lightsaber from Kylo, why is she a better technician or pilot then Han whose spent decades with the Falcon?

They wanted her to be a second Leia in terms of being a "strong independent" female but jesus fuck, they pushed it too hard. She quite literally able to do things that might only possibly be half-assed explained with a hand wave from some future story but its so sloppy and lazy.

And yes as I recall with Luke:

ANH:

>saved from a Tusken Raider by Obi-Wan Kenobi
>saved from the garbage compactor with everyone else by Artoo
>saved by Biggs or Wedge during the Battle of Yavin from a Tie-Fighter
>saved by Han during his Trench Run before Vader could shoot him down

>>14093321
Last I checked Star Wars franchise is for adults as well as kids. Also still isn't a justification for the nonsensical plot bending antics she pulls in the movie.
>>
>>14093322

At least the prequels were memorably bad. TFA is so middle of the road it's kind of depressing. Notice pretty much everyone stopped talking about it within a month of release and it isn't really brought up anymore.

It'll be the same with this movie. People will hype it up and talk about it constantly for about three weeks, then it'll fade into obscurity. Meanwhile, the original six movies will remain a cornerstone of popular culture for years to come.
>>
>>14093325
I just wished they showed more on how rubbish she was with blasters, that would have been enough "balancing" for me
>>
>>14093324
She only thinks she was left on the planet at 5.

Han or Luke probably have the alien running the scrap yard in on it. The Aluminum Falcon just "happened" to end up there as well.
>>
>>14093327
1 BBY year or so
>>
>>14093327

Last I heard, immediately before the events of ANH. The movie is supposed to be about stealing and delivering the Death Star plans to Leia.

It will probably end with Leia's blockade runner being pursued by a Star Destroyer.
>>

If it is a parasite. Then you have people turning headaches into super powers.

If it is mystical. Then the Force uses you like a meat puppet.

TFA borrows elements and settings heavily from both ANH and TESB.

>transition to fleet/imperial scene aboard the Starkiller discussing insert x super weapon that isn't aping the Death Star conference scene? check
>movement to assaulting a snow covered ice planet that isn't following an inverted Battle of Hoth sequence? check
>grand reveal of Kylo Ren being Ben Solo; Han's estranged son in a cheesy basic confrontation scene with a large shaft that doesn't try to hide its mirroring of Vader revealing his identity to Luke in TESB? check

not saying it TFA isn't average but most of the time even the best movies don't get talked about much these days in the following months after the release unless it's being artificially pushed, terrible big budget movies tend to be talked about more simple because they become punchlines in late shows

No, just Rey. Anakin was using the Force instinctively to increase his reaction time and predict things but he wasn't aware of this or capable of doing more until he started training.

Luke also used it to find lost objects growing up and had an unnatural piloting ability, Rey however pushes it to 11 and that's what makes it intolerable.

>>14093355
The worst part about the Kylo Ren and Han Solo drama scene was how when they kept mentioning SNOKE'S name, it killed any sort of suspense or emotional build up. I was literally stifling my laughter in the movie theater and so were all my friends because it sounds like something out of Sesame Street being thrown into the mix.

Also JJ's textbook extremely simplistic and awful use of using the background with dark and red lighting against the backdrop for Kylo and light and blue colors with Han when switching to each's focus was low brow as fuck.

The name is a misnomer. The film so far seems to have zero to do with Red/Rogue Squadron. I think they only chose the name because its both catchy and would appeal to EU fans who were followers of the Rogue and Wraith Squadron books and comics.

The main character is portrayed like a Wraith Squadron character or Imperial agent; covert ops, infiltration, operating like a commando or insurgent then a fighter jockey.

Trailer makes the movie seem incredibly uninspired. Plus way too much time spent flaunting the girl lead (without making her seem interesting in any way too, but maybe that's just me), like, I was expecting it to be about a group of people.

But I guess we'll get more trailers and my opinion could change. Just didn't get me excited like I'd expect from a Star Wars trailer.

In my opinion, choosing something like the Death Star plan heist is perfect for making a movie, precisely because of the vague nature of it all.
That leaves a lot up to the writers/designers for this film, as the only line referencing the heist indicate "many bothans died". You can go a lot of places with this premise, and without the plans you can't blow up the death star in the first movie, which is what starts to push the war in the Rebels favor, so it's at least semi-important as far as the original trilogy goes.

Other way around, dumbass. Luceno was given the green light to write Plagueis and Sidious' backstories and origins in the old Star Wars canon before Disney took over. Luceno reworked the concept of Midicholorians by explaining they just MEASURE one's general affinity to the Force, but do not generate the Force itself, its vice versa in fact.

Luceno was allowed to retcon the concept Lucas vaguely created in TPM.

Is it really arbitrary for having a set of standards for a character?

No, it isn't.
>while excusing Luke whenever he does the same exact thing
When did Luke uses telekinesis, Jedi Mind Tricks, Force meditation, or out-fly Han or the other pilots on either side of the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope? You are reaching badly and blindly and making zero sense here with your desperation to save face.
>because he met some imaginary failure quota
What "failure" quota, autism kun? Luke is set up as a naive and ignorant farmboy who thinks after learning his dad is a hero in the Clone Wars that he's going to be hot shit in the movie. >>
>>14093933
>Luke was a spoiled brat
Luke was a brat, he wasn't spoiled. Tatooine is literally outside of Imperial space and deep in the Outer Rim on the outskirts of Hutt space. Jabba's headquartered there and military and police presence is practically non-existent because the planet is a literal beehive of illict trade, smuggling, and a major zone of underworld activity.

Luke lives with the constant threat of Sand People attacks and raids, criminals just a few miles away at Anchor's Head and Mos Eisely, on a desolate sand planet while trying to get away.

Tatooine is a shit hole.

T-16 Skyhopper is a civilian starcraft, not a military grade starfighter.
>So poor

>>

>>
>>14093964
If we wanted to call Sue on anything, it's little miss unproven charisma out of left field for ROne.

>>14093967
Dude owning a personal aircraft like that is still fucking ridiculous. And on top of that he had his own landspeeder.

Do you know any farmkids who had their own cropduster on top of owning a truck? Because holy fuck for a backwater kid Luke's got it pretty cushy that all he had to worry about in life was hanging out with the gang and having a future getting to see more than just the same sand dunes over and over again.

This does make me realize that while Rey is sacked with a life where she's living day to day surviving on the worth of the scrap she salvages, you'd expect her to throw BB8 under the bus hard and fast for a meal first and foremost. But I guess she just has a family complex and doesn't like the idea of separating companions even further. Which would tie into her whole irrational desire to stay on Jakku against all better judgment until the call to adventure really ramped up.
>>

>>14094032
I'm just saying I don't think even we live in a world where farmkids all fly cropdusters together.

Granted there's actual costs to these sorts of things, fuel can't possibly be cheap, but still when you think hard about it the shittiest thing Luke has going for him is that life is dull. It's a dead end being a moisture farmer, he's the cliche of the kind of kid the Army is able to appeal to what with the promises of adventure and all that shit. I think what really killed Tattooine in his eyes wasn't simply losing his foster family, it was also losing Biggs during the Battle of Yavin. Going back to that planet would just drag up memories of a life he left behind and could never get back even if he cared to, and that's before Jedi heritage really kicked in and gave him his purpose in life.
>>
>>14094052
Skyhoppers are cheap as fuck, easy to maintain, and Luke's in particular was a hand-me down from his uncle who had one he bought decades before. And yes when Luke mentions the best thing on Tatooine is doing stupid teenager shit like high speed racing and blowing shit like womprats up at the ground level, you can tell the planet is a shit hole when he's trying to go INTO THE MILITARY ACADEMY of the Empire.
>>
>>14094059
The IA sells itself pretty well to people unaware of how brutal its regime is, especially when like any military both real and fictional they're capable of deploying the ADVENTURE card to recruit people dissatisfied with the monotony of their lives. They never really tell you they plan to hammer every defining feature out of you until you're just one more stormie unrecognizable from the others, and why would they? That's just bad press.

Also "cheap" is relative. There's no real material on the Tattooine economy so it's hard to say just what it means to call a skyhopper cheap as fuck. Hell, it might just be cheap relative to other airspeeders, but that's like saying a Subaru is cheap compared to a Tesla.
>>
>>14094094
Luke was going to the Naval Academy to join the Starfighter Corps, and become an officer. Not the ground pounder Stormtrooper Corps in the Imperial Army.

Also regardless, T-16 Skyhoppers are cheap enough that poor moisture farmers can afford them easily and everyone has at least one on the planet.

>>14094094
Moisture farmers make excess money by selling extra water rations and hydroponics to supplement their income and revenue. The Lars Homestead was one of the more profitable ones but so was the Darklighters that Biggs comes from.

We're never going to see anything but mostly attractive 20-somethings in Star Wars films from now on are we? All the main cast and antagonists are going to be 20 something or young looking 30's. I can understand that from a box office stand point. They want the Young Adult audience. But it feels rather silly to see a world where the most important people are so young. It's very "movie-ish".

The world tends to be run by middle age and old men. Tarkin is by far the best villain in Star Wars so far, and he was just some old british general. A character like him were to appear in a new Star Wars film, he'd be played by some attractive 27 year old. A young guy just can't pull off the role of powerful and experienced military leader like that. And of course it would take decades to reach that level.

So like the original then? Hamill was 28 at the time, Fisher 22. Ford was in his late 30s, but of the principle cast he was the only older one. Alec Guiness was only in a few minutes, James Earl Jones was only a voice and so on.
>>
>>14094222
Mark was 26 when he was cast to play a 19 year old Luke.
>>
>>14094215
Ben Mendelsohn does not look like he's in his 20's or even young 30's, and he appears to be the antagonist of this film. He looks like a heavy smokin' Aussie in his 40's, though they have managed to make him look imposing in that outfit of his in this.
>>
>>14094215
That's just how it goes. Youth sells blockbusters, and Hollywood hinges mostly on making movies of things that have already been successful. One major source is old movies or shows they can update. So yes, we get reboot after reboot where the new cast looks even younger than the original cast did. Or prequels in the same ilk.

Course in this case there's just been a string of successful Single White Empowered Female movies the past few years and they're clearly trying to tap into that. Most blatantly with that end shot >>14092927 pointed out.

It's just good business sense really, just like putting in the chinese guy so there's something to promote in China, but it makes shit feel like a hollow series of quotas, just boxes to tick off of things that MUST be in so they can market it to the right places, rather than something that formed in a writer's room somewhere. Or worse, you end up with this Ghostbusters travesty where it's essentially a backdoor Bridesmaids 3.

>>
>>14094261
I agree, which is why Mendelsohn for me is a fresh breath of air.
I enjoyed in the original trilogy that most of the Imperial officers with at the least over 40. It's fitting for career officers to be over that age, honestly.
But yeah, the main trilogy is going hard at appealing to the young-adult demo, because that's the point. It's getting a new generation or more into Star Wars. These side films don't seem to be as tightly constrained to that.
>>
>>14094266
There's dumb shit in EU but most of that stems in the early 90s books. Seeing a chink doing shaolin temple fighting or kung fu shit in a visual medium of a Star Wars movie is completely a different ballpark entirely here, man.

The raw technical feats behind the battle of Endor's space component, that shit is visual porn. It may not have a compelling narrative thrust to it like the father son battle bonding while Sheev sheevs, but it's fucking TECHNOLOGY out the asshole.

Objectively speaking that shit was amazing even if it's just the dessert of the film.

I don't understand the issue with a fallen Dark Jedi Hutt. If anything the single dumbest old Star Wars "EU" story was the IG-88 short story in the Empire anthology novel where IG-88 uploads his AI into the main computer banks of the second Death Star and tries to take it over.

That is the shit I remember hating. In all honesty for all of the bad stuff in EU, it had more good stories, novels, comics, and games and really fleshed out the Star Wars mythos for me. I'm more attached to EU franchise then the actual movies.

Are you forgetting about Biggs and Wedge who are around the same age as Luke?
>>
>>14094306
>and the series takes huge cues from Asian cinema

Akira Kurosawa. Whose film making takes heavily from Western directors, and whose films are seem as very Western style.

Lord Nyax was a cool concept and makes sense. His mother was literally batshit insane and she put him while he was brain dead under a bunch of hormonal treatments and growth shots that turned him into a cybord Sith hulk and the first thing he did was carve his mother into 7 indistinct hunks of cauterized meat.

I am probably more familiar with EU then anyone in this thread, you aren't surprising me with anything.

>>14094339
Objectively speaking that scenes were visually impressive but just superfluous fluff to the drama on the ground or in the Death Star. Its nice, but its fluffy and nothing else.
>>
>>14094335

> Ford, Guiness, Tarkin

Isaacs, Ford, Fisher.

Get out.
>>
>>14094340
I still think the frogdog was another low point.
As was Luuke, who was IIRC Luke's evil clone.
>>
>>14094339

Objectively speaking it might be great from a technology standpoint, but subjectively speaking people can still find it uninteresting regardless.
>>
>>14094336
It's the knees that get me. The rest any edgy teenager could come up with on a boring day in class, but the lightsaber knees is just so cosmically dumb that I can't understand how the artist's supervisor didn't take one look at it and smacking him upside the head.
>>
>>14094348
You aren't allowed to say shit about Luuke or anything Timothy Zahn wrote. At all.

Period.
>>
>>14094352

Zahn didn't write Luuke, he wrote Luuuke.

As an April Fools thing
>>
>>14094351
>edgy teenager
Lord Nyax is literally an "edgy" bastard illegitimate son of Sheev who was brain dead and even when turned into that cyborg Dark Jedi monstrosity had the mental faculty of a small child.
>>
>>14094351
It was literally intended to be edgy, SW writers and artists like to satire that shit on purpose in modern EU.

>>14094356
Original clone Luke (Luuke) was in the last Heir to the Empire novel. Luuuke was the short story, he wrote both. And it was always tongue n' cheek the way he handled it because he's GOAT like that.
>>
>>14094306
But it only extends as far as having guys in vaugely gi-like robes swordfighting, and some of the choreographic cues. It's kind of like how in the original Gundam, there's some Nazi overtones to Zeonic uniforms and speeches but they aren't literal Nazis. In both cases, later entries by other people dropped the subtlety for blatant cultural inserts.

Having a guy wield a laser sword kind of like a Kurosawa samurai wields a katana is a whole other thing from pretty literally copy-pasting an chinese staff-fighter with an actual chinese staff from an actual chinese martial arts movie.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>

It's still really REALLY fucking cool though, especially considering the technology of the times.

ILM gets handed a storyboard that involves Lando and team diving into the death star and THEY FUCKING MAKE IT WORK.

>Are you ignoring how she's portrayed as knowing how to use Force powers without any actual training or experience, how she apparently knows how to use and pilot the Falcon better then Han fucking Solo, or how she constantly saves and frees herself from danger while the guys are left in the dust

Sounds like an improved version of TPM Anakin.
>>
>>14094358

I'm not talking about the in-universe justification, I'm talking about the audience's view. Most people instinctively cringe at edgy things because it reminds them of a period in their life that they desperately want to forget ever happened. Like the western equivalent of the Japanese chuuni phase.

She'll still be a better Lightsabre user than Darth Vader.
>>
>>14094389

She'll use those escrima sticks on her back to fight folks in a "might as well be a Jedi" sense, especially since it'll probably have a vibration or stun function built in to them to use against lightsabers. Not to mention the staff user will beat down Stormies like it's going out of style as well.

Star Wars has been inspired by samurai films from the start, and we all know that Japan had a massive boner for China for centuries.

10 years old anakin was one of the worst part of Phantom.

Luke was a one trick pony in ANH, and kind of fail his way through ESB as well.

Katarn? First level of Dark Forces has you shoot up an Imperial base and steal the plans.
>>
>>14093285
>Luke spent a month on Dagobah training under Yoda in TESB.
Hang the cunt on. That either means that Han and Leia were avoiding the Imperials for a month in the Falcon or that they spent a month at the Cloud City (where the Imperials arrived 'just before they did'). Neither explaination is believable.

I don't care what EU or afterthought 'canon' says, there's no way that more than a few days passed in that movie.
>>
>>14095966
Different anon here. I'm terrible at science and it also didn't seem like Empire took course over a long time, but I'm guessing relativity would play a part in time shenanigans.
