Yeah, most of the the time a show's loudest critics find else to hate or a newer show with huge flaws puts everything in perspective.

Hell, I remember Kamen Rider Kabuto getting the same flak when Den-O came out. Kabuto didn't live up to expectations and fans who hated Den-O blamed Kabuto for the series shifting to a light-heart toku aimed at a MUCH younger audience. Everyone feared this as the new norm, but after a few years when it turned out that Kabuto wasn't a series killer, Toei was still gonna attempt dark Rider stories, and worse shows came out (Kiva, Wizard), it's now looked back as an "alright" series.

It's been a while since I last watched it but from what I remember the fight scenes are good in their own way.

Since the whole premise is people playing around at being power rangers and using their imaginations, a lot of episodes lead to nice gimmicks like one is Red and Green having a contest where they fight an army of Crows up a tower in a karate showdown and another that you think is just a regular fight scene featuring blue but is secretly something else.

There's one unforgettable fight scene a few episodes before they get the upgrade that's really creative and fully uses their change gimmick but I don't want to spoil what happens.

Go-Bus was in no way a bad show. Unlike a lot of other series, it was very dedicated to the main plot and characterization which led to its slow burn approach which a lot of people appreciated. The Busters were written as actual people complete with the baggage that comes with it, suit designs were simple yet memorable, the fight choreography was stellar, and the mech direction was orgasmic.

No they weren't. Hiromu even as early as episode 20 is not the same Hiromu as in the early episodes. And it's not even a subtle character evolution sort of thing, he flat out changes vital areas of his character.

The show also wasn't slow burn about anything. We've got numerous plots like Enter's attempts at making a Megazord that are seemingly building up to something big and then get tossed to the side in what is clearly not meant to be the original outcome.

Things I loved about Go-Busters

>Mech fights while ground fights went on.
>Multiple form mechs instead of just being useless until they combine.
>Suits that looked like combat outfits instead of spandex pyjamas. No hate for that type of outfit, but combat leather suits the spy theme so well.
>Obviously Jin and Beet.
>Lots of good comedy episodes.
>Enter is a cool villain.
>Suit battle damage is amazing.
>Blue Buster is so goddamn cool. Especially in that one episode where he intentionally overheats to kick the shit out of Escape.
>Didn't feel the need to go wild with power ups for the team, which meant we got more focus on developing what they already had.

They could spend the whole episode in mech cockpits and still have a tense story.
Hiromu's main skill is being an ace mech pilot, something we haven't really seen in sentai.
Ryuji tackles the big final boss to the ground and tries to stab him in the face. I can't get over that one.
Ace continues to be useful right up until the final fight. Not many mechs managed that.

Someone pointed this out before and I think it was a really good point, Ryuji acknowledging and embracing his overheat was something very unique not just for Sentai but for Japanese media in general, at least in shows and things at kids. These kinds of things are always harping on about how evil is bad and you must be good and to be good you must have no badness or darkness in you at all, you must be 100% pure and holy and have no blah blubity blah etc. Ryuji on the other was the first Japanese hero character in a long, long time that I've seen to just flat out admit that sometimes you need to just rage for a while. Anger isn't always healthy, but ignoring it or trying to suppress it is even moreso, so sometimes the best thing to do is just let it out and not let it burn you up.

You can get Shurikenjin or Bison King pretty cheap on Jungle now that the show if over. They're not the best or anything but getting mechs at decent prices or in decent condition isn't the easiest thing. I buy most of my shit on eBay and that's just a matter of getting lucky Like getting a Gosei Great for a little over 20 bucks. Or a Grand Liner that had a complete Victory Robo inside of it.
