As it was going to be, at the time, the last American Sentai adaption. So it's playful and cheeky and pokes fun at the series as a whole while also being one of the darker entries in the franchise (which is funny because they used Go-Onger as a base.)

Then Saban brought back the license, and the rest is history.

Another good one is Time Force, Timeranger's adaption, as it sticks pretty close to the story of the Sentai.

Power Rangers Zeo is actually pretty good for what it is. They finally hit their stride in a MotW formula, and with adopting new suits they went back to using the Japanese fight footage instead of the much lower quality scenes they were filming for MMPR S2 and S3. I particularly loved the voices for the Machine Empire group. The only thing is the ending is garbage because they had no idea what to do with it with the Turbo movie coming up.

Mentioned this a few weeks back, the ratings are going to looked skewed years down the row for people who just look at the Sentai by itself.

The Pokemon variety show's first half hour (a rerun) went away and now it's mostly Kamen Rider that goes head to head with Pokemon. Sentai's main competition is a Disney Jr show and Duel Masters, neither of which pull fantastic ratings.

Metal Hero typically had higher ratings than either Kamen Rider or Super Sentai. It makes sense for Toei to have moved Sentai to early mornings if you look at Metal Hero ratings. 1990 is Winspector, the first Metal Hero show to air at 8 AM on Sundays, the spot Rider has now, and its ratings increased dramatically.

Toei wanted to make a Robopon series to celebrate its anniversary, so it took Metal Heroes place for what was supposed to be one year. Then, to honor Ishinomori's last wishes, they went ahead with Kuuga, which turned out to be a big success, so they made Agito, which was an even bigger hit. Ryuki initially began as a Metal Hero, but this was only -very- early on in production before Toei realized they would rather just ride the Kamen Rider cash cow.

And it makes sense if you look at Ryuki. You've got giant monsters helping the heroes, battles taking place in another dimension, heroes whose bodies aren't actually altered in order for them to transform.

I already have watched the rest of Kobayashi's sentai (other than Gingaman and Timeranger).

I wasn't too blown away by either with the first few episodes but I'm willing to give it a shot if it's as good as people make out.

I'm not impressed with a lot of her early work from what I've seen of Ryuki and those predate Ryuki.

Ryuki gets a lot better once you get beyond the first 13 episodes. It sounds cliche but it really is true, you're introduced to the more interesting Riders and the background of the Rider Fight is really interesting.

Gingaman is a very standard show. It's got its fans, but even a lot of them admit that it wasn't a show trying to break new ground. It's got pretty rigid arcs "one general for 10 eps, then another, then another" as they chase different McGuffins, but it's not exactly a bad show, just not overly ambitious.

Ishinomori wanted to make a new Rider series but the idea didn't get very far with him. His idea was "Hey let's make a new Rider with a female lead" and then he died. ISHIMORI PRO is the company that continued his ideas by hiring artists to do proto designs in his style for what would one day become Kuuga.

I'd argue for Geki a bit, to be fair most of what it was doing was just applying a bunch of kung fu tropes to Sentai and running with it, but it was approaching it kinda differently from the other martial arts Sentai stuff I've seen.
Plus you had stuff like the mecha fights haven a wrestling like commentary, and the costumes being the most minimalist in Sentai.

GoBus is probably the most different of what I've seen though.

But I do like the efforts every series goes to in making it's fight choreography individual. Like even though it's not as cool as the martial arts stuff, but say how Go-Buster was trying to be somewhat more real and would throw in more MMA type moves like GekiBlue pulling out arm bars and such. Or how the Gokaigers worked as a team and they had their own comforts in how they'd fight and play off of each other or swap weapons to help with that etc.
