***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

/m/ i think I have a problem I've been buying things in sets of three's

I noticed a picture of three zaku's fighting back to back a while back and I've started buying kits in triplets now my worst offence is my current orders are as follows

1/444 Zudah x3
1/144 Zaku I x3
1/144 Zaku ll x3
1/144 Zaku l black tri stars x3
1/144 Zaku ll black tri stars x3
1/144 GM COLD DISTRICTS x3
1/144 Operation V set x3
1/144 Blue destiny 1 2 and 3 x3

Do I have a problem or is this normal?

I also have three of the Orgins black tri stars kits but I think thats pretty normal given that you know the black tri stars were a squad

Blue Circle = Sticker
Red Circle = Metallic Red Paint

For the most part the stickers are actually alright. The red painted part on the head does not wrap around nicely at all so I replaced it with paint. The wing thing on the left are also does not wrap nicely, so that is paint as well.

The stickers on the wings hides seam lines quite nicely. Once you put them on, I would recommend against taking them off because you'll have to destroy those stickers.

Doing extensive painting on a special finish kit seemed like a pain, so I kept the stickers.

Guys help. I have a problem where a lot of kits are just.. flimsy. Loose. They fall apart on me.

>Z'Gok E, makes sense in the arms considering its an older kit
>Wing Gundam Fenice, less acceptable.. idk why but it never poses right, joints are loose no matter what I do, legs fall off randomly, can't hold sword because the sword falls apart
>Gusion Rebake, where to even start

Literally the only kits that don't feel like hand grenades are Zakus, Grazes, and a RG MK. II.

The fuck is wrong with me?
>>
>>14046006
I am 90% sure that all 1/100 IBO kits are flimsy
>>
>>14046006
It might be the way you're building?
I've noticed that my kits are a LOT tighter compared to when I started and I assume that's because I've just improved as time has gone on.
However, you can also put a little bit of super glue on joint parts, and then fit it in after it dries, this tightens the connections and can solve some looseness, especially when it comes to limbs popping off of their own accord.
For the love of god make sure you touch test it before cementing your model into a statue, I'd hate to be the guy that ruined a kit for someone else.

>>
>>14046244

Me too, I think it's an under appreciated design because of the lame pilot factor. Also the only modern kit is that 16 year old HG that can't even turn at the waist due to the design. The leg flight form is also pretty weak.

Still, the proportions have held up better than many other early HGs though I thinned some things out a bit on that one. It's been a great learning process in general though, I'm almost sad to finish it. It would be my build fighters suit for sure.

The Fucking Ribbons thread just reminded me of my love for the Gadessa/Garazzo series of MS.

Looking on dalong I see there's HG of the kits but no MGs, which is sad considering the ugly HRL S1 grunt suit got an MG. In fact, it was the only "villain" suit that got an MG.

I was wondering if anyone had those kits and could tell me how they are. Any issues? No flimsiness, poor engineering, low possibility?

Main body made from HG G-Self, head from HG Arios, rear skirt modded from HG X Maoh's satelite panels.

Originally I planned to have the panels be able to open for Chris' Zesshou mode, but that plan was scrapped too. Because when I tried moving them during assembly, the panel holders scraped against each other and ruined the paint. So permanent closed tailfins they are.

About the head, I probably should have shortened the v-fins and rounded off their edges, now that I think about it.

HG G-Self is notorious for its very limited articulation despite being a very recent kit. It doesn't matter that much when the kit has a giant weapon, though, because it's going to be up on a stand more often than not.

Scopes for the gatlings made from unused green stickers of HG GN Archer's guns.

The design, mods, and tone selection were done by me, the actual repainting part was by a friend. So I'm not exactly sure what paints he used. I'll ask and check.

My hands have always been rather shaky since I was a kid, but in the past 10 months they've gotten really bad. I can still handle denubbing and panel lining, but handpainting is already out of the question. Airbrushing, well, I keep messing up the trigger pressure, so I can't do it on my own.

Guy fighting with shoulder stickers here.

So I plann on simply painting the blue stripes on the shoulder instead of continuing my struggle with the decal.

What would be the best way to get the two small stripes done? Masking seems like it would be a real pain and I don't think my hand is steady enough.
>>
>>14045155

The Deltas. I have the MG and HG Delta Plus, the HG Delta Kai, and the HG Hyaku Shiki. Next on the list the MG Shiki 2.0. I really wish there was a MG Delta Kai. The suit has so much going on, I feel like the HG doesn't do it proper justice.
>>
>>14046697
Nice subtle detail work and good job on the custom. Love those custom gatlings. They look good. Ever considered painting the rods inbetween the sections of the gatling gun a separate color aside from white? Gunmetal? Or would that deter too much from the source do you think?
>>
When doing shading, do you guys prefer to make the corner/side brighter or darker than middle section of a part?
>>
>>14048486
why people need this?

>gundam SEED was 14 years ago
well shit
>>
>>14048490
Darker. It needs to be subtle, but it smooths out sharper edges as opposed to highlighting them if you do radial shading from dark (centre) to light (edge).
>>
>>14048496
Because, regardless of your feelings towards the series, it's still a popular design. Especially in the primary market of Japan. Add that to the fact that the original MG is fairly dated by now, and it's a reasonable product to make.
>>
Who here got the Kimaris Trooper? How does it stack up against the regular Kimaris?
>>
>>14048496
As long as people keep buying it Bandai will keep milking it. Granted, Freedom isn't that bad a design, but it's kind of like Exia or Fenice. It's a nice design they just keep churning out repaints and remakes for.

Im going to be buying my first models right away

When looking into hobby shops i was linked to a site with some better prices then eBay or the sparse local selection

I was wondering if anyone has any other good websites for cheap gunpla that ships reasonably in Canada?
>>
>>14048829
As a fellow Canuckistani, I'd say HLJ, Hobby Search, or Hobby Wave. Most of the sites used for US shipping are applicable, really. Where in Canada though? I know of a few places in Calgary with decent prices and selection.
>>
>>14047514
Nifty.

Think I'm gonna get the HGCE Rouge and add the Sword Striker to it. Think the colors will be nice.
>>
>>14047789
Well, I'd likely be putting it on a stand, but yeah the worry is there.
>>

Winnipeg

Wave iswhat i was looking at

There is a "store" reasonably close to me that specializes in gundam

But it operates 12-4 saturdays (yes only 4 hours a week), has a small selection, and only operates in cash.

Suspiciously it offers the same deal as way, shipping anywhere to Canada for 15 dorra, but at a price 30 percent higher.

>Im kind of wondering if its a front for gang activity
>>
>>14048923
Same deal as wave***
>>
>>14048923
Hobby Wave is only really any good if you're going to make large orders, thanks to the flat shipping rate. If you're just ordering a few kits at a time, I'd suggest looking at HLJ to get a lower price over all. Maybe pick up one or two locally just to see if you actually enjoy it first.
>>
>>14049025
FAG and a Graze flavor
>>
>>14048980
HLJ and hobbysearch both seem to be 25ish percent more then wave,
There's two or three bros I want to get which will easily make it worth it.

Sup /m/ates, I was wondering is it necessary to prime and paint my models or could I get away with just panel lines? Any recommendations or help would be appreciated

They've gotten rid of most of the curves, and made everything extra angular. My main beef with is is the shoulder. What made the Barbatos for me initially is how many soft curves it has.

>>14049096
I'm not a big fan of how they've stretched the torso horizontally and the head vertically. and also how they decreased the overall size of the legs.

It's still a marvel of engineering though, and It's not like I hate everything about it. The moving pistons are magnificent, the color separation is great, I like how they've added gaps in the armor, like in the shin and shoulderpad.

Fuck, I'm probably getting this in the near future anyways. The more I look at it, the more I want it. Shame it doesn't come with its mace

>>
>>14049442
It's not that it's hard kit, quite the opposite actually it's really simple. That's why it's terrible.

No articulation, shitty color seperation, early day joints, etc.

If you're inexperienced it's actually a good kit for practice
>>
>>14049451
Oh well. I'll just use this kit to git gud at panel lining and try out painting
>>
>>14049491

>>
>>14049365
Because gloss paint reflects light any contours become very obvious, and with hand-painting it's very difficult to maintain an even coat unless you hugely thin the paint and then give it many many layers. Even then your coat won't look great, due to brush marks.
>>
>>14049511
You can always wet sand after the final coat to even out brush marks. It's not ideal, but it is doable.

What are you basing "Hard to Easy" off of? Like, difficulty to make look good? If so that make sense. If it's just building difficulty, then I don't understand why the 80's kits are near the top.
>>
>>14049743

I mean if anyone else wants to take a stab I'd be interested, new people are always asking how "hard" a kit is etc. but that means different things are but that really doesn't cover much and means different things. I'm not trying to say this is definitive by any means, just a way to think about it.

Same here. I'm just worried about making the panel lining all shitty and I want to add more detail to my first kit like scratch marks, a little dirt on the foot, maybe faded color in some parts, etc.
>>
If you are at the stage where you are topcoating with cans, if you have a kit with a matte/flat finish you could try using weathering pigment powders to add some variation. It works kind of like shading. Then you just add more topcoat to seal it if you want to handle the kits more. I think you could do a ghetto version of basic post-shading with darker weathering powders if done properly. The tamiya kits are pretty expensive, check other model shops online for something cheaper. It's something worth exploring at least if you really have limited equipment and money.
>>
>>14050291

Also get colored pencils, silver, black, brown, gray, etc. It's commonly used in military modelling for edges or nicks.

Removed seams on legs, ankle guard things and arms, but I managed to lose one waist piece somewhere in my "full of garbage and other shit" room, and the ball on one of the feet broke so now I gotta fix that too.
Not done with the paint yet either, the blue is kind of done, the white and black might stay but get fixed, the white is gonna go something else. Not sure about weapon or keeping the extra backpack shit. Unsure what I'm going to paint the crotch thing and the cockpit door thing.

Totally forgot to do that.

I did it both on my Zaku II Origin and my Hazel, although not to that level, i just removed the flags.

Still trying not to fuck up nubs. Seems i always take to little or to much off, and sanding usually scratches the piece. I can usually get it presentable though, at least to my standards. Ive noticed it often comes down to the color of the plastic and the gate placement. My graze is a nightmare in some places.

It was an impulse buy. I'd been thinking of picking up some RD figures when I came across the kit and figured a kit would scratch the itch. And if you'd followed the comment chain I had only intended to do the single kit and be done, so tools would have been a waste.

>Do people not read the guide and buy all the tools they need before starting their first kit?
I should hope not, because that's fucking retarded.

You have to test out whether or not you even like the hobby before you even think about even the basic tools for gunpla beyond a hobby nipper and possibly leftover sandpaper.
Buying a FIRST kit and snapfitting it to dick around with is just the test to see whether future ones are worth the effort/time and how far they're willing to go.

From there tools and paints are going to cost 3x-10x the cost of another HG kit depending on how detailed or advanced you want to go with your tools, much less MGs.
>>
>>14053075
I originally dove in with a mg rx78 3.0 and I regret not buying a hg grunt to practice on.
The kit still looks okay but I think I could have done a better job if I'd just spent a tenner on a zaku first to get the hang of it. So many scratches and chips could have been avoided

I'm not sure how rare these old and out-of-print kits are. I like it, but I get the feeling I'm probably going to be better served harvesting it for parts than by assembling it stock.

If I'm being truly honest, I probably wouldn't be able to do it justice by assembling it stock either... I'm not the greatest of painters, and my experience with a Dowadge kit of the same era informs me it will look (and pose) like shit.

Just trying to get a feel for if these cheap old kits still have any value in and of themselves, rather than being mangled and cannibalized for parts.

How's he going to fucking try it if he doesn't even like building the kits to begin with, dumbass? He has to get a FIRST kit before he goes assburgers over it.

It's like a game with a basic vanilla playstyle, but with heavy grinding or difficulty mechanics for the more advanced. You have to walk in and give it a shot before you go trying to find secrets and hidden treasures and general bullshit.

>muh general
He doesn't have to post here or call it even "good."
He DOES have to at least try a basic HG and see if he gains any fun out of it for an hour or two before he buys paints and thinner and brushes and tools and decals and eventually a compressor and metal detail bits and and and etc.

Pull your head out of your ass. I realize you love the smell of your own feces, but it certainly is obstructing your view of the world outside of it.

>I'm not sure how rare these old and out-of-print kits are.

they arnt out of print, Bandai does re-runs on old OYW stuff all the time. your box may say 1981 but that thing was probobly manufactured in the last 3 years.
>>
I'm just getting into gunpla and was wondering why some MGs are cheaper then RGs?
Because they are old / undesirable ?
>>
>>14053192
An HG isn't really that difficult? And they have fairly good color separation, particularly in kits from the last ten years or so.
Why wouldn't you start with an HG? They're the easiest and best bang for your buck, as well most prevalent kits.
What, do you want him to start off with an RG? PG?
>>
>>14053206
>that thing was probobly manufactured in the last 3 years.
Whoa, weird. That's some old-ass stuff to still be printing. I mean, the legs and shoulders could at the very least be updated to early-2000's polycaps at that point... Though I guess these things are dirt cheap anyways. I got the Bishop Zaku for $6.
>>
>>14053130
Enamel thinner is relatively cheap, my hobby store sells I nice size bottle for around £5 and I use that to clean up the tamiya panel line paint I have.
WARNING these thinners are harmfull to the plastic of the kit so make sure to dilute it and test it on a runner or something (I learned the hard way and melted off half a knee guard in seconds)
50/50 with water iv found is fine and will not damage your kit even of left on
>>
>>14053223
That's why it's suggested to use lighter fluid, it's much less harmful to plastic than enamel thinner.

Still should dilute though
>>
>>14053178
>If you're going to try something don't fucking half-ass it with toe-nail clippers and a butter knife.
that doesn't make any fucking sense
If he's going to try something why buy a ton of useless shit you won't need if you don't like it? A snapfit HG plays an dposes with just fine and dandy even if it's not photo quality.
>>
>>14053178
>You're the reason this general has gone to shit

The general hasn't been good in a long time, I don't know what one you've been browsing the past few years.

It was also much more lax on /m/ til recent times, the elitist mentality was always /toy/
>>
>>14053230
As long as it's diluted properly either is fine, you just need to be more careful with thinner
>>
I just have question out of the blue, /m/.
There any particular ways I can figure out a tabletop wargame for HG-scale kits?

I'm not sure in the first place just how to scale it and I'm not sure if this is more a /tg/ question anyways.

I was thinking of having base Bandai action bases as the standard of movement (with a model moving X-number of action base lengths, and the angles on the action base being a rough Line of Sight for armor calculation) and for 1-2 teams of 3x models at a time per player.

Any ideas or tabletop systems I can look at you guys can imagine?
>>
>>14053243
Kits are too big to be reasonably used as wargame pieces, unless you're looking at something that uses a huge board with only a handful of units (ie something like battletech).
>>
>>14053256
Yeah, that's why I was going to limit it to 6-ish models (one team of three per player).

It becomes a more campaign-focused system I was imagining, a lot like GW's aborted Inquisitor game system a decade ago (if you know anything about Warhams).
>>
>>14053178
These generals are good aside from autists like you.
>>
>>14053213
>Why wouldn't you start with an HG?

Too easy?
>>
>>14053308
Unless you're talking about non-Bandai kits that requires glue and painting to look acceptable, all gunpla from HG to PG are easy as shit dude. They are just more complicated and take more time to build.
Starting with an HG would be best so you don't make costly mistake on your first build.

>>
deciding to post this here as well. Got a lot of progress done lately. Still need to paint the interior of the legs and get the decals in. Since hte last time this photo was taken I've painted up the rest of the gun and heat hawk as well. Once I get decals in I'll be doing an oil wash and dry brushing.
>>
>>14053540
I personally like 1/100s just because they're bigger and more noticable especially with painting. On the other hand RGs are pretty hit or miss since they can be so fragile to work with; I don't even want to think about painting all those pieces.
>>
>>14053580
Agreed, if you just want to have fun I'd say HG are best for what they are, cheap fun. MG is kinda the gold standard when it comes to gundam kits, details, easy to paint and really make your own and just at that sweet spot for displaying in terms of size.

I love PG myself, but even I'll admit they are too big and sadly not enough of them for everyone's interest.
>>
>>14053230

I like the lighter fluid as an alternative but hate the way the wash can separate with it over like 15 minutes. I still like artists oils and odorless turps too and it's way cheaper.
>>
>>14053238

Ive been here for like 2-3 years and I think there are less Gunpla posts but more elitism now. People were mad when build fighters flooded the general but towards the end of the series the general got especially good. Miss those days.
>>
>>14053577
May i ask what paint did you used for this?
>>
>>14053343

A well done HG is more impressive to modelers who know what effort things take than an mg where the kit does more of the work for you. One of the anons here tends to build hgs and smaller kits but could probably make more impressive MGs. It's just a preference not an objective thing.
>>
>>14053666
On the other side, i found that for some reason there has been less people yelling at others to resize their images recently.
>>
>>14053681

Not hum but I can tell you the paint process matters much more than the product, and size helps as well. Not trying to say it's not nice looking, just many newer people tend to focus on material brands when knowledge is more important when doing anything other than just one even tone.
>>
>>14053696

Yeah none of them know how sobthey dont complain that's why :^)

Also super sized images are a great way to make your model look way worse than it would in real life.
>>
>>14053540

I personally prefer HGs, because there's a wide variety of suits, including some of the larger/obscure designs, that might never get an MG.

I rent and still airbrush indoors. Just turn off my fans and central air, open window and make sure the hose and booth fan are working properly.

Never had an issue with it, obviously not telling my landlord about it, though I don't think she would care cause we're on good terms.

I really wish I had a tool shed or garage though

I used Tamiya for all the armor and alclad for the frame parts, along with silver and gold sharpies for some of the details.

So my process, prime, do a base coat of the main color, then shade in black, then use base color again but really really thin and feather out the shading over 2-3 coats, then seal with a coat of pledge.

Most other paints I dont have to do the base coat first and black, its mostly just because of the greens being so opaque. Most of the other kits get away with preshading without much issue.

I've talked to the landlord about whether or not they'd be fine with me setting up a spray booth by the window in my room, and they said no. I think it's because they don't like the thought of paint fumes being let out onto the backyard, which is where their dogs usually kept. Not really sure if there's any real hazard but I guess they still don't like the thought of their dogs possibly inhaling deadly paint fumes. Sucks since the list of kits I want to paint just keeps growing.

There is a backyard in this house, but it's where the land owner's dogs usually are. I'm afraid of possibly fucking them up with paint fumes, or them using my kits as chew toys if I ever happen to take my eyes off them for any reason, and I'm just afraid of being near big dogs.

I guess I shouldn't have said anything then. I asked for permission first because I'm afraid of them finding out, not being okay with it, then throwing my ass out. It's been really bumming me out because my newest haul of kits just came in and I'd love to really put work into them but just can't.

anon again, I often airbrush late at night to avoid the fume issue. I'm almost positive you wouldn't be able to smell it but the they get vented in the opposite direction of their yard/house anyways.

Could probably get away with it if you're sneaky, I'm an animal person though so I say be careful of the dogs if they keep them out at night.

Also should mention if you plan on airbrushing inside and intend to use lacquers you need to be extra careful since they're much more hazardous then using other thinners. Water based paints are the safest but they're often very soft and require a lot of topcoat to protect and even still they might rub off (I have limited experience with them because I never liked water based for that reason)
