***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Two weeks of effort and a little over $200. I used a grey fine tip gundam marker for panel lining, and an 800 grit file for nub smoothing. First are the master grades

Time for blog postan. Been doing Gunpla for 7 months and I only have six kits. I'm a poor fag so I paint everything to lengthen the build process. Think I'm gonna just drop the hobby after this RG Exia until I get a stable job. Fellow poor fags how do you finance your plastic crack?

Just a nitpick, but the feet-forward/shoulders-forward stance looks really stiff. Consider angling their approach, or at least splaying the feet out a bit

skip it, the proportions are wonky and the transformation is super fragile, it makes the MG look like a brick in comparison. the 1/100 HG isnt much better since its a partsformer and everything wants to fall off.

I saw Prime(?)s video of it, and it was pretty wonky indeed, I was thinking of gluing up a lot of the transformation things on it if possible. Just a neat display piece to stick some lights in. It's definitely not a priority due to its faults. I know the 1/100s are pretty eh, I had to stick a lego piece in the chest on one of the Victories just to make sure the head didn't go down.

By the way, could you post a picture of your Gun-Ez/Gun Blastor and Javelin?

>>14036259
I have it I bought three, and it's kind of in the neutral area. Excuse the terrible top coat and decal job.

The hands are shitty, the thumb is on a ball so it can rotate and go up and down, but nothing else, the rest of the hand is open so the gun only stays in the hand if you have it aimed down so it can hang. It can't even hold beam sabers. The thing that connects to the shoulder on the arm and the upper elbow are connected by a piece in a claw or whatever you call it, so they don't support weight all that well and mine just fucking cracked, I think the shoulders used to pop off sometimes, and the wings doesn't stay on well. I think the shield doesn't hold up all too well either. But it looks good, the gun can change with a few things, you get a bonus core fighter. It's less than 3000 yen, right? I'd say that if you're going to do more than snap it, you can probably fix the problems somewhat easy and it wouldn't be bad. I might build another later, to see if it has the same problems.
Shitty review by me

Carefully since brass is so soft. Also stick to black powder and lead projectiles because anything else will trash the rifling very quickly

My duster keeps getting it's feathers caught on the pointy edges, and if I dust around their feet, all my figs get knocked over.

Should I use canned air? Picking up each of my figs would be time consuming, and i'm not sure my Gundoom can handle much more handling.
>>
>>14036962
Canned air and a swifter 360 duster work the best/quickest unless you want to spend the time hand dusting everything but that would be time consuming as fuck.

A case is the best solution for dust though but expensive, obviously.

Recent MG V2.

It could actually hold the shield a bit better than I thought, but it's kinda loose and the red part on the outside could fall off easily.
And I'm an idiot who forgot about the other hand part which seems to be better for the beam sabers, although still not that great.

>>
>>14037265
If you can't file it down to make it even then you need to use plaplates and weld then file/sand accordingly.

Anyone buy Gunpla at cons? Going to a small-ish con and wondering how prices compare to online / Amazon. Or if they often have deals or sales.
>>
Post poorly done Gunpla/plamo
>>
>>14038006
Typically varies by buyer, but you should expect a decent mark-up since they need to make a profit on top of paying to import them. I saw someone selling HG Build Burning Gundam, which goes for about $15 online, for 25 at my last con.

That thing is obviously still an early prototype. It looks like it would have fallen over if it were actually allowed to walk around instead of being propped up. If they are still working on a prototype just last year, it's going to be a good while before you see anything like that on the market, if at all.
>>
>>14038055
Generally the further from Japan it is, the more expensive it will be, unless the seller is ignorant of the value or it is old stock to be moved or left at its initial price from years ago.

>>
>>14038098
I guess I'm thinking of 'buying local' as it was produced in the same country you live in. Yeah, your scenario is more expensive because buying a Japanese kit from someone here is effectively just adding a middleman to the importing process.
>>
>>14038087
>>14038098

What shithole country/state do you niggers live in? I pick up bandai kits at my local hobby store for the same price as it is online pretty much. If a kit's $23 online, it'll be $24-27 tops, but I get to take it home that same day and whatever else I can get at the store without having to pay for separate shipping and shit. Not to mention I can order whatever kit I want from there too, and the store doesn't pay shipping, they get a kickback, and I don't pay anything that could be even remotely considered obscene for that.

>>14038094

it's a Wave 1/144 LED Mirage

the kit is an absolute pain in the ass, I spent an entire winter break just doing the bodywork and getting it final primed

I wanted to come up with my own kind of pearl finish because I felt it would fit the LED mirage really well (it's glossy and slightly clear in the fiction). So I did a bunch of experimenting and came up with a mixture that actually worked out. The only commercial paint used on this kit is Mr. Color White. You can see in the box picture it looks almost silver, but this head in different light is pure white.

I was really nervous about trying something weird and untested like this paint thing on a kit I had put so much work into. There's still tons left but this was the big "make or break" step.
>>
>>14038125
If you can order whatever kits you want and not have to pay shipping, I'm betting that your store is getting the kits direct from the manufacturer rather than going through a vendor. They're folding in shipping costs to make up the differences in the pricing, then adding on their profits.
>>
>>14038125
California but there are no hobby shops that carry gunpla under an hour and a half's drive besides one Hobbytown USA that looks like it's been trying to get rid of a single shipment they received years ago and the price is still 25% higher than online. I nabbed a Nobell Berserker on clearance for normal price though, no regrets at all. Next closest one is Robots for Less and they're crooks. It's just easier for me to order online and not spend 4 hours of my day (or more depending on California traffic) to pick up something. The price of gas and middleman convenience is more than it's worth.

Not really complaining but it sort of baffles me that Portland is Comic Book Hipster Hometown USA but there aren't any dedicated toy/hobby stores around anywhere, and none of the comic shops I've visited stock Gunpla at all.
>>
>>14038146
Where in CA? Granted, where I was when driving by was in San Diego, but I don't remember the prices in that store being too bastardly. Try little tokyo like areas, I remember there being like 3 stores within driving distance that stocked gunpla for decent prices.

>>14038153
can't help ya there, I live in freedom land.

>>14038163
Look around. A lot of places are pretty hidden sometimes, and some don't even have websites or anything online. You'd be surprised at the amount of shit you'd find just driving around randomly. First hobby store I went to that had gunpla kits was literally this one beat up locale amidst clinics and mechanics that had RC cars and a few model kits. They were expensive as fuck, but I know 3 other mom and pop kinda places, one much closer than the other two that regularly stock gunpla and everything I could ever ask for. My state's pretty big on small private businesses though, and we have a pretty big IPMS community here, too, so maybe it's just that. My hobby store's always selling shit. Literally every time I'm there, someone's either placing an order for kits, or walking out with paints and materials.

Different thread just got me curious so now I want to know if anyone here can help. Are there any kits out there for SRW OG mechs?
>>
How possible is it to set up LEDs for a 1/144 kit? Say, an RG RX-78 and a HG Graze?
>>
>>14038178
Portland is mainly posers, isn't it? How would they know about Gunpla, or really anime/mecha in general outside of muh arthouse films?
>>
>>14038197
depends on where you want to put the LEDs and the type of LEDs.
>>
>>14038196
I think Dalong has a list of a bunch of SRW Mechs, I dont know my SRW stuff at all though, so they might not be OG. Plus a lot of those kits might be out of print. Worth a check though. Check under his Koto kits.
>>
>>14038197
On 1 1/144 kit? Probably next to impossible. The chest might be hollow enough to fit in a microcell battery, but the joints are probably all ball joints & polycaps, nothing to actually run a wire through. You'd also have the problem of none of the parts actually being made for LED or lightpiping.
>>
>>14038206
Head, anywhere where there may be light. Primarily the mono eye thing in the Graze in its closed position.

>>14038209
We talking any kind of LED here, or just Bandai brand Bandai LEDs?
>>
>>14038211
I'm thinking LED in general. The plastics on a typical HG probably aren't thick enough for LEDs, so when you turn the light on the entire part will probably light up. Though the idea of a glow-in-the-dark Gundam is mildly entertaining.
>>
>>14038200
It has "geek" hangouts, but it's really sparse on weeb stuff

The place is pretty genuine when it comes to both hipsterism and trendiness though, but you get more tryhards than posers
>>
>>14038211
You might be able to get away with threading fiber optics into the head, but that's only if you have enough space in the torso for both the LED and the battery and possibly a small switch/button.
>>
>>14038222
You could actually coat the inside of the part with 2-3 layers of paint to block the excess light.

I want to buy one cheap (<1500円) kit for this weekend. I live in Shinjuku and have looked around at all the Bic Camera's nearby, but I might head to Ikebukuro just to see if their's are any cheaper.

I haven't done a kit in over a year (and then, only Crossbone Maoh and Turn A). I'm thinking G-Self or Barbatos, since I hate the design of the Graze's that keep being recommended and I'm a fucking casual.

Fellow Nyc anon. Do not shop in chinktown for your shit unless you love super bloated prices. I actually go to GP constantly with friends who live in NJ. Their prices aren't the cheapest but I still enjoy being able to shop for what I want/need in person and their nippers are fucking amazing. They shit on the tamiya side cutters performance. Your best bet is bhiner/taobao or finding deals on amazon if you want cheap gunpla though.

Been to GP when I was in NJ. Place is totally based, their stock is amazing, the displays are good and their employees seem nice enough. Guido Gundam hanging by the front was pretty funny. The prices aren't fantastic like you said but seeing what you're going to buy in person is worth it. I'd recommend to any anons close enough. I think I came in pretty soon after a restock because they had some items that the online shop said were out of stock, especially older stuff. Plus a ton of P-Bandai. It's basically their warehouse but you can walk in and buy stuff on the spot. However I've never been to another place like it so I don't know how it compares to other well-stocked gunpla places, I only have shitty hobby shops near me.

the paint job is really great on mine too but it would have been at least 20% better had it been undergated to avoid the nub marks. its still one of the most unique kits ive ever built with shitloads of accessories and configurations and i only paid $23 for it in China, so i really dont have much to complain about.

Here's how the rest of it looks, there's damage on the box, it looks old and worn as crap. It was like that when I got it though.

It's probably not something that'll look great with a straight OOB build though. It'll take some elbow grease to look great, but that's to be expected in any of the old kits. It'd be fun if you're into detailing up old kits though, or something. My original plan for it was to try and kit bash it with the HGUC ZZ, but never got around to it.

Hey, Anons, I was looking to make something like pic in a while, but I don't know what kits to use for it.

Let me tell you, the glue is not even the biggest problem. This kit has lots of surface detail and the design has complex shapes, but there are also lots of problems that never show up in bandai or even most koto stuff. Fixing all the dips in this kit without destroying the details was not fun.

Although there is substantial post-paint glue work which is usually a terrifying experience, and defintely will be here.

All of these pieces had huge dips in them. That lance is just 2 halves that didn't quite meet, so I had to putty both sides in addition to glue. It's like 18 inches long and has those teeny rings running around it to make fixing the seams even more of a nightmare. It came out fine, but it took forever. This is looking at the seam.

Not that anon but I've built the Zephyrantes and am building the Full Burnern right now. Zephyrantes is more posable but has less toys. Build it to have it fighting a common zeon suit on the ground. GP01fb is less articulated due to its beefier legs, but the backpack is awesome. They both suffer from the RG shoulder armor problem, and both are a little tilty in the middle because the shield is so heavy, but doing anything to increase friction fixes that. Also be careful building the rifle if you have gorilla hands like me.

Cotton swabs and pressure. If it loses it's adhesiveness you're shit out of luck, glue would just make a mess and look like ass. If you're really determined I'm not going to say don't try it, but don't be surprised if it looks shitty.

Just learn waterslides, they're really not that hard and they look significantly better

M3 Striker Weapon System for PG Strike, bought on eBay.

It doesn't do the Perfect Strike thing well because there's no battery pack, nor are there connectors for the sword or launcher packs to the PG Aile pack, but it wears each one extremely well on its own. Actually came with some decent waterslides. Fairly good detail and colors. They can even fit onto the Skygrasper if you have one. Defiantly recommend this to any Strike fans who have the PG.

I can't find a review of the SR3 but here is some nerd talking about the LED mirage and he's kind of coming from the perspective of a typical gunpla builder

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d22cqlO_Ma4
>>
>>14040623
It's a gunpla/plamo thread, and I'm asking about plamo.

>>14040632
Yeah I googled the name for reviews, but all I got was one blurry review video and a bunch of painted builds. I wanted to know how it'd look OOB, if it's too fragile, any issues, etc.

>>14040646
I've got a decent amount of experience, although it's mostly just seam wielding, panel lining, a little bit of painting experience. Mostly basic things, I guess. Is this kit too above my skill level?

The person selling this also has a LED Mirage Siagon or something for sale, and I saw someone here complaining about that one earlier, although in 1/100 form. I was wondering if the 1/144 version had the same issues?
>>
>>14040693
He said read the thread because there's somebody building a 1/144 wave fss kit right now and you'll find out everything you need to know if you just read you colossal idiot
>>
>>14040700
Re-reading it again, I just now realize he said it's 1/144. For some reason I thought he said it was the 1/100 version, which could be totally different from the 1/144 like how master grades have many differences from high grades. My mistake then.

>>14040692
I was actually just watching that, but thanks. The LED Mirage looks a lot better than the SR3, I'm thinking of getting that one instead but watching the other anon's struggles is pretty discouraging haha.
>>
>>14040693

I'm the guy building the LED mirage right now, and I'm sure you could build it but I'm not sure it would be an enjoyable experience. Some things in this kit are frustrating for no good reason; check out this shoulder design where the seam is on the most complex (thus difficult to sand) surfaces. The white version in this pic is from some random guy online who didn't fix it, that's what it's like out of box. Lots of dips in pieces too. I have a pretty good amount experience and love these designs, but I spent 3+ weeks on this kit to get it fixed and primed and then put it away for like a year.

Thanks for the input. Scrolling up and reading through your struggles with this kit, it makes the experience seem horrifying, especially to someone with only basic experience like me.
That's all I wanted to know, whether it'd be an average kit or a sloppy nightmare, and whether or not it'd look decent OOB. As much as I'd like to paint it up, I recently moved to a rented place where I'm not really able to use my airbrush kit.

About how much sanding can top coat fix?
>>
>>14041522
I often panel with a .03 pencil because I like the softer look.

When I use a pen, I dull it down anyway with a q-tip and thinner. So if I fuck up I have my q-tip handy. That meathod also gives parts some shading since the area around the line is a bit darker due to leakage.
>>
>>14041522
>>14041555
>>14041571

2 options I recommend.
>Buy Tamiya Enamel paints and some lighter fluid. Thin the paint with the thinner until its very watery and apply to panel line. It'll run through the line by itself.

>2- Buy Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color. or any other panel line wash. Its pre thinned enamel wash you can use on panel lines. Comes in black, brown, and gray.

Those 3 colors are all you need for most colors. Gray for light colors, black for dark, and brown for weird colors like Char red suits.

>>
Jesta or Jesta Cannon?
>>14042022
I was mostly curious about the build quality.

I can't tell if I find it extremely busy or satisfying.
>>
>>14042008
the fins and big guns are a bit too flamboyant for me, looks nice with the decals on but the Mega Shiki is a better base for custom builds.
>>
So what would you guys say is the average build time for gunpla at each grede?
>>
Is it just me or is thee something off about the PG 00's proportions?
>>
>>14041874
It was more of a general statement, but the re/100 Efreet Kai is coming out soonish.
>>
MG or HG Delta Plus

Looking to put my order in tomorrow, and I'd like to know about the build quality relative to each line. Like, is the HG a better HG than the MG is an MG, or vice versa.
>>
>>14042184
The MG is garbage from what I hear, falls over easily due to bad ankles.
>>
Anyone from /m/ have MG Exia? i've heard some stablity stories but i'm not willing to pay the $70 for 00 Raiser
>>
>>14041710
how much sis you use and how far away from the part did you spray? and also this >>14041753

my earlier kits where I used testors dullcoat came out pretty shitty sometimes RIP in peace BD1 but after I got the hang of it, testors works great for me now.
>>
>>14040216
Not that particular kit, but I have built other Koto AC4A kits. They're about the same size as an MG Gundam and they do snap together but I would recommend glue anyway because some of the parts are small and fiddly. They're very detailed though. Keep in mind, however, that they weren't designed as model kits first like Gundam kits are, so they tend not to be quite as posable and somewhat fragile.
>>
>>14040216
They snap together, but they're so detailed that seam lines just pop right out so you'd want to glue and sand anyway, and some have a lot of small bits that you probably want to glue so they don't risk getting loose.

Kotobukiya kits in general are meant for people who intend to paint, not just snapbuild and put stickers on.

Train-chan when?
>>
>>14040523
guess lurking for your post about this was worth it.

just one question, how's the minigun barrel assembly?
is there any possible room for barrel mod, as i prefer the MG strike minigun barrel (1st version) rather than simple cylinder design.
>>
what's your opinion on MG build strike, guys?
>>
>>14042038
I have the HG, I prefer keeping it in waver rider mode because the articulation when it's in its normal mode isn't so great. The crotch where the legs connect is one piece so you won't get much movement there, elbows barely go 90 degrees, shoulder articulation isn't that great either from what I remember. I love how the kit looks, but the transformation gimmick restricts articulation.
>>
>>14042048
Depends on how good you want it to look
>>
>>14042419
Mythos Willwear when?
>>
>>14035895
That's a nice one anon but it would be better if you clean those nubs and panel line it so that it looks more good.
>>
>>14042974
There's no saving the Gaza-C it looks like ass. Not the best kit, either. Could've used better proportions.
>>
>>14042439
Pretty simple 2 piece assembly, one yellow and one grey. No rotation or anything like that although I don't think modding it to do so would be that difficult
>>
>>14041708
Okay, I'll use alcohol then.

Also, can I safely seam weld and prime in the same day?
>>
>>14041890
Shit I want it just for those decals.

Guess I'll wait it out for either them to get released by themselves or for a 3rd party waterslide release.
>>
>>14042992
rotation, huh?
might be a good idea to mod small motor into armor plate, since it's 1/60 scale.
>>
going to the local hobby shop today, they have MG X, Dark Matter Exia, and Fenice R on sale.

Should I pick up one of those or just get a real grade or something?
>>
>>14043076
Depends what you use to weld. Putty takes time, plastic cement is faster but still needs time to melt and bond properly and ofcourse sand.

I wouldnt rush it
>>
>>14041708
I use their lacquer thinner because water makes the paint too soft and brittle and alcohol likes to gunk up.

Imo if you can afford proper aurbrush equipment you can buy decent product too and so far i havent found anything better for their paints

Realize that I am complete Zeon fan. I only have one non-Zeon model and that is not even from one the main series, Build Fighters. Anyone have recommendations for Feddie units, besides the vanilla GM, which is on my list?

Sinanju ova, sinanju ver ka titanium, or nu ver ka? As my second kit that is.
Scared of the waist peg breaking on sinanju vka, plus no base on both. Scared of the apparently flimsy fin funnels on nu (comes with base tho)
Also theyre all about the same price, around 10 dollars from each other
>>
>>14043768
>nu ver ka
This.

Nu makes my dick so hard. Dunno why I don't own one.

Never get metallic finished models; what's the problem with the regular Sinanju ver ka?
>>
>>14043819
sinanju ver ka has an issue with the waist

ova is just better, includes the bazooka, fixes the issue and uses better plastic. also has a different shade of red

only reason to ever get the sinanju ka is if you really want those waterslides or it's signficantly cheaper
>>
>>14043821
Wouldn't the titanium version have the same issue?

You should get the Stein anyways
>>
>>14043826
I wouldn't know, I never have and never will buy a titanium kit.

I also already have the OVA because my gf really likes it and wanted me to build it for her

Stein is sexy though, I like it but I just have no interest in buying it
>>
>>14043821
>>14043826
Regular ver ka not availiable at where i get them, so i guess i need to choose between ova ver that comes with no base or the nu.
Well...
>>
>>14043848
nu
>>
>>14043541
Gundam ez8, GM custom or the rx78 anniversary/origin are probably the best in my opinion.

>>
>>14043727

>>
>>14043727

>>
>>14043541
Here's a list of some of my favorites in no particular order:

GM Custom
GM Type C
Powered GM
GM Striker
GM Sniper II
GM III
Any of the Jegan variations
Any of the Rezel variations
Jesta and/or Jesta Cannon
GM Quel
Any of the Hazel variations
Gaplant/ Gaplant TR-5 Hairoo

Also there's quite a few gundams out there as well if you aren't looking for a grunt unit. A good one to start with would be the RX-78-2 revive.

Christ I can't type for shit today, this is the second time I had to edit this post.

are metallic files like pic related fine for sanding down nubs? its been working fine for my past couple of kits(unless its a round surface). any downsides to it or should i've bought sandpaper
>>
>>14044445
I use my file all the time, it's just quicker than sandpaper you just have to be more careful since it can wear down plastic so quickly.

Though if you git gud at using a file you can go through nubs really quickly and polish them off with some 800-1000 grit sandpaper for really clean lines
>>
>>14044445
I use the metal file that came with my Humbrol Hobby Tool Kit, works great, but don't be over zealous with it.
>>
>>14044445
>>14044452
I use a metal file for sanding nubs even on round surfaces. In fact I think it's even easier than flat. It's definitely a lot faster than sitting there changing grits. It definitely takes some technique and dexterity to not butcher the plastic though.
>>
>>14044464
Me too, I actually bought one of those really nice tamiya hard coated ones for $20 (way too much for a file, I know) but honestly it was worth it. It works so much better than any other file I've used, hasn't aged or rusted at all, and never gunks up with plastic like other files I've used.

thanks guys, i thought i was crazy for using a metal file to sand down nubs

Glues like Super Glue bond faster when exposed to increased surface area and moisture. Since your porous skin has both, it dries and cures much faster than on plastic.

Alright /m/en, I just bought my first gunpla. Just like >>14044664 I'll be waiting for my tools to arive somewhere this week and then I'll finally start my gunpla journey.

Wish me luck!
>>
So do people actually pay the crazy prices on those official gunpla tools or do you guys just make do with what's on hand?
>>
>>14044725
Generally used tools are from hobby supply manufactures like Tamiya (paint and nippers) or just common hardware stuff (sandpaper, x-actor knife, etc.)

Bandai and gunpla stuff? When I first started many years ago before I knew any better

Mostly hobby stuff now, I like tamiya products a lot so I gravitate towards them even if they cost a bit more, most of the time it's well worth it. Otherwise like the other anon, general hardware/auto parts store stuff works fine
>>
>>14043489
That is gorgeous.

/m/ i think I have a problem I've been buying things in sets of three's

I noticed a picture of three zaku's fighting back to back a while back and I've started buying kits in triplets now my worst offence is my current orders are as follows

1/444 Zudah x3
1/144 Zaku I x3
1/144 Zaku ll x3
1/144 Zaku l black tri stars x3
1/144 Zaku ll black tri stars x3
1/144 GM COLD DISTRICTS x3
1/144 Operation V set x3
1/144 Blue destiny 1 2 and 3 x3

Do I have a problem or is this normal?
>>
Hey /m/, what are you supposed to do with those stickers that doesn't fit the area properly? Like on the manual it says to stick it there but there is an obvious gap that the adhesive wouldn't touch. Do I just leave it there hanging dry?

Wish I had a pic but that 02 sticker on the HG Origins Mobile Worker MW-01 kit is a good example.
>>
>>14044962
is that the mash one? Because If I remeber when I built mine I used a thin knife blade to gently press them all into place let me check my kits
