Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

What do you think will be the next Revive HG kits after the Gyan?

They've been promoting the 200th hguc as a revive release and something big. So probably something disappointing like a zaku or strike freedom.

my little brothers 16th birthday is coming up, and for christmas this year i got him a tamiya tool kit and a an AGE 2 kit. he really seemed to enjoy it, and he expressed an interest in build fighters kits. i havent watched the series or built any BF kits, do you anons have any reccomendations on what to get him? looking to spend around 50$

I'm hoping it's the classic Dom.
The R35 and Origin Doms have already been made, and they don't need to do too much work to make a fantastically modernized Dom kit. they just need to tweak it a bit and see which runners they can re-use.

Failing that, they could make a Revive Guntank.
with all the articulation it has, they could just reprint the box with REVIVE on it and just sell the normal one.
>>
>>13942986
We've gotten a ton of Zaku and similar gunpla recently with more to come thanks to origin.
>>
>>13942986
Imagine if they went all-out with a Revive Guntank, giving it double-jointed arm cannons, a torso bend, and movable tracks. And a fuckton of effect parts.
>>
>>13942966
How is he with the nubs and construction? If it's decent you might want to get him an MG, probably the Fenice or Red Warrior but almost every kit from the HGBF line is fine except for the ones based off of really old kits (Kampfer Amazing, Qubeley Papillon etc)
>>
>>13943007
>We've gotten a ton of Zaku and similar gunpla recently with more to come thanks to origin.
Because they're AWESOME.

>>13943009
It would be interesting to see. It'd be so disappointing, yet so good at the same time to have a Revive Guntank taken to the limits of what it can do.

Bonus points if they include special Space parts as well.

>he expressed an interest in build fighters kits. i havent watched the series or built any BF kits, do you anons have any reccomendations on what to get him?
Build Fighters kits are fucking goddamn fantastic. They're built with customization in mind, and really breathe a lot of fresh life into old-but-good designs (looking right at you, Gundam Leopard daVinci). HGBF kits generally tend to have a wonderful assortment of accessories and/or detail parts (the R-Gyagya is great).

I'd recommend at least the Zaku F2000 (which is sort of proto-Build Fighters). It's beefy and massive, and comes with an assload of extra guns he can play with.

I believe it's also on Amazon with Prime shipping last I checked too.

There's also the HGBC option kits as well, which really liven up customization options. They're essentially replacement modular backpacks, often with an extra gun or something gimmicky. The EZ-Sr addition is fucking fantastic.
>>
>>13942966

>Hguc Kampfer
>Really old

The only thing it's really lacking is swivel thighs. Otherwise it's pretty good. Only issue I've had with the amazing is that the guns are a little loose in the hands.
>>
>>13943115
It has full range articulation (except by the knees because the ass verniers get in the way), color separation with minimal sticker use, and a good amount of accessories( 2 rifles with interchangeable butts, 2 beam sabers, 2 bazookas, 2 panzer faust, on extra open left hand)
It's almost on par with some of the better HGs
>>
>>13943149
The Kampfer amazing throws the color separation out the window, 70% of the yellow and all the white on the kit are stickers. It comes with a lot of accessories but so do almost all of the HGBFs.

Guys, anybody here built any of the SEED Destiny Dom Troopers?

I wanted to ask a question about it. The truth is I got one myself, and I notice that there's a lot of different plastic colors in here, and one runner has like three (off the top of my recollection).

How come most kits don't have better color separation like this kit? I mean, the Dom Trooper isn't even that popular (albeit it looks fucking great), but they bothered to give it a lot of different color parts in a single kit.
>>
Is it just an issue on my end or are all the manuals a lot smaller now?
I got the HG Hi-Zack, V-Dash and the Kimaris, and they were all released at different times, but their manuals are all significantly smaller than any of my other kits.

HG Exia is kind of almost 10 years old.

I'd recommend the F91 because it includes a lot of things and it has pretty unique bazooka, rifle, and body
>>
>>13943533
Mk-II revive and F91 is fine, they're both pretty new, Mk-II being recent. Most HGs are a good starting point.
>>
>>13943533
F91
it is cheapr, comes with tons of accessories and is very easy and fun to build
Exia is ancient, has terrible proportions and doesn't even include beam effect parts
Mk II is kinda meh, another run of the mill gundam with no really distinctive feature
>>
>>13943533
The Exia is somewhat OK
Quite a few things were loose and kept falling off on mine like the blue chest-shoulder part, the front ankle armor, and the part of the upper arm that attaches to the elbow

Well as they announced revive as a revival of any ag suit I wouldnt count out those who were not 1/144 at the time as hg covered other scales once upon a time. Just put into the 1/144 scale which is cheaper and usually more popular then others.

But as its the 200th I wouldnt put it past them to make something like Neue Ziel from its hgm 1/550 I think it was? But that said thats if the literally mean big. But I could see it being gp01, alex, devil, tallgeese, 08th ms team gouf flight type for the zeek fans, zaku 3, etc. But personally maybe something with a cult following like g savior. I doubt theyed make the 200th something that needs multiple units like shuffle alliance suit or wing suits that arnt rivals to already released units. But knowing them if they go literal and knowing japans love of seed probably meteor unit or some bs.

In a nutshell, some guy was going to paint and build an HG Zeta for his friend. So he decided he was going to spray paint it with neon florescent spray paint that had golden flecks in it.

He also planned to super glue it shut so it couldn't transform.

He also spray painted the parts, while they were still on the runners, while holding the runners with his bare hands and not wearing a respirator, in what looked like a garage.

Someone will come along and post the few pictures he posted before /m/ had a collective rage orgy and scared him off. We'll never know what the finished product looked like.
>>
>>13945970
>HG

It was an MG 2.0.

He was also a dick in his posts and replies to the people who were actually giving him legitimate advice, insisting that he was an art major and new what he was doing. It was after his first couple of replies that he pissed everyone off.

Though even then, at the time of his posting, I remember thinking "Now we'll never know what the end product looks like."

Found out the 400th Legend BB which is this Knight Superior Dragon releasing this May.
Looks pretty great with generous amount of plated parts which explains the jacked up price.
How does it holds up to the SDX one?

prepping to paint is pretty straight forward, its always good to give the parts a wash to get rid of any oils/dust/hair/ect that may have accumulated during construction in water with a little detergent then wash that off with regular water

Leave them to dry for 24 hours or so then (wearing gloves preferably) put the parts on skewers using poster tack or aligator clips (you can get like 50 for a couple dollars on ebay) then stick them in styrofoam or honeycomb cardboard.

Then its time to prime, i personally use the Tamiya grey surface primer but i've heard mister surfacer 1000 or 1200 is good as is the alclad stuff. Some people use krylon but they aren't available where I live. The tamiya primer in a spray can is pretty good though.

Then you wanna spray over the parts about 4-6 inches (10-15cm or so) away from the part making sure to keep moving and never the spray in one place or else it'll pool and you get an uneven coat.

Normally this is good and primed however if you really want a great finish as primer reveals a lot of imperfections (nubs you thought were clean most certainly are not, puttying flaws also come out here) you can wetsand it back until its perfect then reprime and rinse and repeat.

Actual painting is a bit easier, keep the parts in a dry place safe from dust and the elements, on the skewers again and then airbrush/handbrush/spraycan. Masking also comes into play.

I know this is probably bait but I guess I wrote it out of good faith.

People tend to avoid "risky behaviour" with items or objects that are both valuable to them and not immediately available on demand. Someone who only has one pair of $500 shoes will look after them infinitely better than someone who can buy some flipflops for $2 and call it a day. The more time and effort you put in, the less you are likely to progress for fear of fucking it up.

That said, dont be afraid of fucking up, there will always be more plamo to be had. You can look back on your past failures and admire your own wilful power to overcome being a total shitter.

It's part of growing up

its kinda a shame they only changed like two or three minor things. I would have kept the head, chest for sure, change the backpack like they did if I saw that right. Id change the shoulders length and shape slightly make it more compact as more shit can get clipped. Id decrease the crotch length and increase its skirts length to about the back skirts length or more. Id make smaller side skirt armor or bring it in slightly so it wouldnt hinder the leg binder thing. Change the back of the leg to small thruster but yeah wouldnt mind if they made it a kit
>>
>>13946511
>Side grip
What if this suit pilot uses the (collapsed) sword as a giant tonfa?
>>
>>13947287
Back of the leg does already have a small thruster. HG doesn't show it, but the calf armor opens up to show the thruster in the 1/100 NG.

I agree they should be more adventurous with the changes though.

Well, it's still just something you should do. Properly thinned your paints can last you six times as long then if you paint unthinned. So there's some sound finical consideration to put in. Cause the less you spend on paint, the more you can spend on kits.

I DO notice a difference, although I can't really quite point out what it is exactly.

Start off with snap fitting and getting a feel for it, just don't stick with it if you plan on progressing. use this stage to get used to proper nub removal, move on to small touch ups such as panel lining next. It's all about taking things at your own pace
>>
>>13949135
A good way to practice painting is on the parts of runners that have writing on them
Try to get even, uniform coat of paints while keeping the letters on the runners as sharp as possible
>>
>>13949241
Yeah, I don't want to stay a snapfit, especially with all the hate snapfit builders seem to get around here. I'm getting used to sanding out nubs, although I gotta say it's an incredibly boring chore. Do you guys do anything that helps make it feel more bearable? Or is it just one of those things where I have to suck it up and just do it? It's honestly my least favorite part of the build.

I'll buy a panel lining pen next time I'm out, I remember seeing them in multiple colors though like black, brown, and silver. I was going to get black, but I was wondering when/if I'd ever want to use a brown or silver panel lining pen?

>>13949269
That sounds good, I'll try that once I'm comfortable enough with gunpla to start trying to paint.

Thanks guys for all the advice.

>I'm getting used to sanding out nubs, although I gotta say it's an incredibly boring chore

It's just one of those "zone out situations and just do it" situations , I listen to podcasts or digest some new music while I sand, alternatively you could just get really good with an hobby knife but even that won't get you the best results.

Instant gratification isn't the name of the game here. Time and effort are rewarded for those that commit
>>
>>13949332
Hot damn, that is a sweet paintjob.
>>
>>13949298
It's not that snapfitters are generally hated. It's those that keep spamming mediocre builds, keep pushing that they are something remarkable and refuse to improve or react badly to criticism. Sanding is actually relaxing for me as long as it isn't small round parts like boosters.
>>
>>13946511
Kinda reminds me of Gundam Destiny
>>
I've just got my first RG after building half a dozen HG's and 2 MG's. It's a strike freedom. Anything I should know going in? I hear they can be really fragile.
>>
>>13949332
Yeah, I was impatient and used a hobby knife to cut out nubs, but it really bothered me how I'd always end up cutting too deep into it and leaving indents all over the kit.

It's crazy boring, but I do end up feeling a lot better with myself and my build after sanding out all the nubs. I guess I should just suck it up.

>>13949362
That's.. pretty stupid.

Oh yeah, how do you even sand boosters? They're so small, its hard to have a good grip and just pops out of my fingers half the time while sanding. Is there an easier way than just awkwardaly pinching it between my fingers?

Buy something thin like 1 mm thickness so you can part the material easily using the score & snap method.

The piping is actually the same silver as used on the shield holder and the triple cannon. The tubes on the gatling are a combination of gunmetal grey and the silver, while the bands are just gunmetal grey.
