>I don't see how SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER is 'trading way too hard on rehash and nostalgia
Everything I'm hearing is that it's going for retread value: what worked and was loved before as plot points, much like how Unicorn picked and choosed the most loved motifs from UC.

The spoiler isn't exactly a new thing either considering similar stuff happened in ROTJ, and to a lesser degree the soap opera in ESB.

Yes, I have watched star wars, I watched EP1 when it was in theaters, I thought it was bad because George clearly had no idea what the fuck he was doing, I hated 2 because it went fucking nowhere most of the time, had even worst dialogue, a romance subplot so poorly written, genuinely poorly written, it makes anime romantic subplots in shonens look like good by comparison. BLUE FLASH standing by!
>>
>>13634090
It expanded upon the mythos and made the galaxy feel 'bigger' than it ever did in the original trilogy. I also think Ewan McGregor was brillaint and the choreography of the lightsaber duels was intense. There's a lot of subtle stuff, especially in RotS, that may or may not have been unintentional that sheds a lot of light on the characters' (specifically Anakin's) motivations throughout the trilogy.

TPM is a bit meh, I won't deny that. If your argument agaisnt it is "Jar Jar and lil boy Anakin" then you need to get your head out of your ass.

AotC has the neat murder subplot and it shows us a bit of the going-ons of the Jedi, which is cool to see.

RotS is undeniably a good movie and you're dumb if you think it isn't.
>>
>>13634090
Episode 1 had 4 cool final battles and neat creatures, Episode 2 had less but more well rounded fights as did 3. The midi-chlorian complaints allow you to determine which people deserve to go into the ocean with concrete shoes.

I always felt that you shouldn't need some sort of technobabbled measurement metric to identify Force sensitives, you'd just have a good hunch because Force and all and it would be up to the academy to do the rest, washout or not.

It felt like a Star Trek sort of thing, if that makes sense. Too sciencey for something as spiritual as the Force.

>>13634289
>science in my sci-fi? do not want!
>>
>>13634289
Ok, I can see that. It doesn't bother me but I can see where you're coming from.
The most frequent complaint I hear is that people seem to think that midichlorians ARE the Force though.
>>
>>13634299
Well that's LARGELY what Ep1 implies, them being anything else is basically retcon.
>>
>>13634321
Aren't they just what allows the Force and living beings to interact? Like a conduit.
>>
>>13634328
Just treat the midis as indicators rather than the cause.
>>
>>13634367
That's actually what a lot of the EU stuff does. It's good that they never really bring up Midi-chlorians in the other two movies.
>>
>>13634128

The actual dialogue and directing is all kusoge, but the world building is fantastic. And the effects were staggering at the time. Imagine going from the small space battles of the OT to huge ground battles of Genosis without any preparation
>>
>>13634419
I've heard other folks say this and I think I agree--I feel very bad for Hayden Christiansen, who played grown-up Anakin. He's a good actor on his own and he really did his best in the prequels, but they gave him such awful lines that there wasn't much he could do.

You also have to feel for Jake Lloyd, who played kid Anakin. I heard Phantom Menace pretty much ruined his life. Hard to imagine how anyone could hear "NOW THIS IS PODRACING" as many times as he undoubtedly has without going crazy.
>>
>>13634419

Welp. Poor guy...
>>
>>13634569

i totally get why it's happening, but it just seems cheap. i know ford hated the role, but i figured now at his age, and without the fear that he's been type cast as han, he would ride it until the end. maybe his stipulation for being in the film was that he had to die, just like sam l's was that his death actually 'meant something'.

again, i still haven't seen it, so maybe when watching it it will feel 'right', but that seems unlikely. i did mention it to my friend a few days ago, when the script leaked, and he didn't seem to have a problem with it, so who knows.

Newsflash: the HanXLeia subplot wasn't well written and came out of nowhere as well.

He was mostly being facetious to get on Luke's nerves.

>They explain it to us in Empire!

I bet you whine about Anakin dreaming about the pretty girl he met when he was younger- which is a natural thing for a growing man to go through, especially someone in his position.

The Han and Leia romance's only saving grace is the dialogue, and that's mostly because Harrison Ford is a master of making dialogue work.

The prequels have horrible dialogue which couldn't be saved by the actors trying their hardest, except for Portman who could have been played by a robot and things wouldn't change that much.
The prequels also have pretty awful scene composition in many places, and their overreliance on 2003-tier CGI makes them look like the "Empire of the Ants" only 10 years later.

The characters act so retarded until Palpatine' coup that many fans have a theory that Palpatine could cloud people' minds because there's no way no one wouldn't notice his schemes, and did I already tell you of how Palpatine could take power because Jar-Jar-Binks, a joke character no one liked voted for giving him supreme powers?
I bet this was a very cunning critique of the Democratic system on Lucas' part.

And worst of all, Anakin.
We were supposed to see the rise and fall of this incredible badass that owned all his scenes in the originals and spawned countless imitations, and we're treated to a whiny kid that cries 80% the time he spends on film, and that's when he's not a 9 year old kid shouting about spinning and good tricks.
>"b-b-but the cartoons!"

Yeah too bad we're talking about the movies here, and even then the cartoons are ugly CGI shit that looks worse than fucking IGLOO, except for the Tartakovsky cartoon which was nice I guess.

People who prefer the prequels are obviously contrarians who watched them once 10 years ago or trolls, or there people on /m/ that probably prefer Gundam SEED Destiny to 0079, because that's what we're talking about here.
>>
>>13634742
I'm "easily impressed by pointless flash" yet I can also understand the story and characters, something that seemingly flew over your head
based on your poor arguments.

It's mainly just the romance parts that are terribly written. Obi-Wan is written totally in characters and McGregor gives a fantastic and memorable performance. Young Anakin acts just like a ten year old would. The script also fleshes out Yoda, letting Frank Oz use his classic charm mixed with a new side of Yoda we never saw.

The battles are pretty exciting, truth be told. The space battle in TPM is suspenseful and and thrilling. The lightsaber duels have amazing choreography and you can see a lot of talent put into them. The dogfight between Obi-Wan and the Fetts, while short, is also packed with thrills. then there's the entire first fourth of Revenge of the Sith.

You're just going to go back and call me a "contrarian" so I'm done justifying my fondness for a trilogy of movies. I hope you can find it in your heart to not get paranoid about small things like this.

Because peopel typically like to go into thing, be it a movie, or novel, or video game, without the knowledge of what's going to happen.
The Empire Strikes Back wouldn't be as memorable as it is if people just KNEW that Vader was Luke's dad.
>>
>>13634805

We're not looking at Ivan Groznyi or Citizen Kane here, it's a cheap space fantasy movie, the plot and suspence is 90% of it.
And even then, twists in movies have always been used to great effect and they also work in more "adult" movies to convey emotions and messages.

Se7en atmosphery wouldn't work so well if you already knew the twist beforehand, wouldn't it?
>>
>>13634819
It would be memorable because it's a well made movie. Even if you know what happens, the characters don't, and there's a satisfying dramatic payoff. And movie which depends on a twist or a shock to stay memorable is a weak movie anyway.

Shit that just came out of nowhere, and disappeared into hyperspace, in the movie

-Desert world, death star, MF swallowed in a hangar bay, Han Solo didn't shot first, Death Star, disturbance in the force, prison break, trench run, death of mentor = yup, list of stuff to match A New Hope, check.

- Somehow, Han and Chewie were smuggling in the same region as the MF when it was floating powerless in space, in time to pick it up.

- The New Death Star was built without ANYONE in the republic and resistance EVER finding out UNTIL one misprogrammed SPARTAN reject told them. And NO ONE blinked an eye, they just went straight to 'lets blow it up' and 'there's always a weakness'... yeah, there's one in this plot...

- There are GURLS in the IMPERIAL First Order now... how the hell did that happen!? Palpy and Vader's spinning in their graves.

- Han borrows Chewie's bowcaster, apparently for the first time... in a partnership of HOW FUCKING LONG? Also, bowcasters are supposed to shoot explosive quarrels, not lasers? And they were green, not red?

- Han dies, and Chewie is like...meh... doesn't he have a LIFE DEBT to the guy? Other than one roar and gut shot, Chewie just shrugged and teamed up with another little girl!!?

- Also, the first person Leia walks up to when the survivors return, is not the partner her husband had for majority of his life, but some little girl she barely knew...

- And apparently the little girl, Rey, took Han to be her father figure in like the dozen conversations they had. And somehow this was only conveyed in a single line after his death... just to build up to the 'oh my uncle Ben got offed by the dark lord, he was like a father to me' trope.
>>
>>13635344
- The New Death Star. Apparently, it has an atmosphere... even when a pillar of star energy is ripping through it's OXYGEN filled atmosphere into space, it doesn't SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST... at most a few trees gets blown down...

- And hyperspace beam of destruction? Ok fine, but you want to say that a planet getting destroyed can be seen in real time from another system? WTF!? LIGHT doesn't travel that fast from planet to planet!! The people on the planet should have only seen the red light DECADES from the attack...

I do since episode 1, but... I don't know. With Lucas out of the way, I was kind of hoping JJ could do something with it, bring back the good old days while refreshing it a little for the new audience, with an actual good original story and all. He did a decent job of reviving Star Trek ( Even if it's far from perfect ), Super 8 had really good ideas, and Armageddon actually have one of the best writting for a disaster thriller. I overall liked most of the things he had worked on, so I was hoping ( He couldn't be more bad than Lucas got with the prequel, right ? )

Instead, he served us a fucking rerun of all kind of things we already saw in another episode. I could have passed over any other default it had ( And there is a lot of them ) if it was actually a good, even decent story. But it's not.

Sure, it's pretty well realized, it have a bunch of good ideas, but for one good idea, there is several bad ones. Either he clearly didn't have enough experience to get something as big as Star Wars, or Disney restrained him.

I don't care which one it is, but this one episode is garbage, and saving the trilogy will need them a hell lot of work.

But who cares ? It was already making profit before anyone could see it. Let them do it the Michael Bay way, why bother losing time on things like scenarios, when a bunch of CGI effects assure you to be profitable.

Fuck these generations of faggots.

>>
I really liked how the lightsaber fights felt that they had some actual weight behind them.

>>
>>13636043

I don't know, it felt more like actual sword bashing than g_realisticsabercombat_1. Saber combat is meant to be a stylish, gentle form of combat, from an previous era, after all. The OT certainly had more drama to them than this movie.

And there's a whole lack of force moves in the battles. Even Rebels had more force techniques than just force push or pull. We only ever see that first use of the force to stop a blaster bolt in mid air in the first 10 mins, and then it never appears again, and happens to be the only unique use of the force in this movie.
>>
>>13636143
In addition, I noticed an extremely worrying lack of space scenes and battles in the movie. Most star-craft battles occur in aerial combat. This is like the Battlefield or COD of Starwars now...
>>
>>13636143
>the only unique use of the force in this movie.
Eh, Vader blocked blaster bolts with the Force in Empire. Not unique.
>>
>>13634742
>less drama than its predecessor despite having full armies bashing each other to oblivion

Fucking this. Holy shit, why would you make it clones vs droids. You literally went out of your way to ensure that battles have no tension because we don't know the people in them.

Contrast this with 0079. We clearly know what Zeon and Gihrens goal is. Conquer Earth and implement a facist society. I have no clue what the fuck the Sepratists goal was. To seperate? What happens if they win? Why should I care about these identical clones? In 0079, we're constantly reminded that lives are at stake. Dying soldiers shout out their wives names. Soldiers have individual names, and go out of their way to protect each other. In the prequels we have...nothing.

The fighting reminds of how Luke wailed on Vader in ROTJ - that's probably how Kylo got trained. Finn and Rey are complete amateurs, so it makes sense that they're a bit more rough.
>>
>>13636143
Relative lack of force power use in the final fight is probably down to Kylo not being chill enough to let the force flow. When he has things under control, he can use a load of force powers but he collapses whenever he's unsettled. Contrast this with Rey, who figures out that she has to be all zen to make things work. At least in this movie, force powers seem to be treated like the God Gundam's hyper mode.

Exactly. Rey is a character from a junkyard planet who knows how to fight with a staff. Kylo is a former apprentice of Luke who never had a chance to receive proper training with lightsaber himself. One can guess that their styles would be very different from Jedi of old Republic who practically danced with their swords.
>>
>>13636427
You want to tell me then how Rey knew she was Leia, when that was the first time they saw each other? She didn't know Han on first sight either. And that still doesn't explain ignoring Chewie, or Chewie ignoring her. Their partner just got kilted.

He has anger issues, he's mentally unstable, he's deeply insecure, he's conflicted and second-guessing himself, he actually shows fear and uncertainty, he's not an overpowered Mary Sue, he's shown to lack training and is nowhere near mastering the Force. He's probably the most "realistic" portrayal of what I imagine a real Dark Side Force-sensitive would be. So having him kill his father to try to prove something to himself actually makes a lot of sense for that character so I don't really mind Han's death. I just wish they didn't show his death face, that felt a bit undignifying.

Except the whole thing of him falling for the Dark Side is pretty dumb in the first place, considering who his parents are. He have literally no reason to fall for it. The character itself is pretty much ok, but the foundations of his story are not. They forced this way too much on the Han/Leia story, just to have them in a primary role for the fans. It would have been way better with a new family.

surely being the son of a legendary hero puts a lot of stress and pressure on you to be just like them? What I'm hearing makes Kylo out to be like someone who is stuck in a state of extended teenage rebellion.

>we know what qualifies as good

Wooden, stilted performances? (Of which one actor has blamed this on ruining his career and another came VERY close to having it ruin hers)
Clunky dialogue riddled with statements of the obvious and redundant lines?
CGI that now looks painfully dated?
Plot developments that seem to happen for little more reason than 'Well, fans know this place!'?

This is the thing people seem to keep forgetting in their defenses. The big problem with the prequels isn't 'NOT MUH STAR WARS'
It's that, even divorced from the brand, they are badly made movies. Not the worst ever, but at best, you're looking at a 2 out of 4 star movie on a good day.
>>
>>13637086
We still don't really know what caused him to fall to the Dark Side, do we? We've been told that his relationship with his parents was strained and that Leia tried to help him by sending him to train under Luke, and we've been told that this Snoke dude seduced him to the Dark Side. The only other motivation of his that we know of is that he greatly admires his grandfather and wants to surpass him. The movie ends with him going to finish his training under Snoke and Rey going to train under Luke so I assume the next movie is going to be a lot more Force-focused and will show us the differences in their training and philosophy and we'll probably find out more about his backstory and the circumstances of his fall to the Dark Side. And if not in the movie, I'm sure they're already hiring hack writers to write backstory novels for every single new character.
>>
>>13637162
The book that will most likely deal with this is New Republic: Bloodlines and will be written by Claudia Gray. Her Lost Stars book is really good.
>>

>strained relationship

That's all you need.
That's seriously all you need.

The dark side is rooted in emotional turbulence like that.

Oh wait. Now I get it.
You're just cruise-control trolling now.

If not though, feel free to try and expand on this. I'd be very curious to hear how something like the "I don't like sand" scene is good dialogue, or how Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson wasn't running on auto-pilot in TPM.

Hell, even if this is a troll, try it. At least be an entertaining troll.

G-Reco shit-posting is slowly losing its 'en vogue' status and going the way of Valrager.

Gotta get that next hate train rolling now.

You can greentext all you want, it still hasn't proven the argument.

Seriously. Give me a reasonable argument why the prequels are legitimately good movies.

I've given arguments as to why they're not seen as such. Now it's only fair you pony up.

That's all I want. No greentext. No 'NO U'. No 'You're wrong' without an explanation as to why I'm wrong.

Let us be /m/en about this, not Kira Yamatos.

Or...you can continue to act like this and fail to convince me this hasn't be an exercise in trolling.

The choice is yours, but if you're not actually going to try, I can't promise I'll indulge you much further.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there always girls in the Empire's military? The Empire is racist against alien but that's about it.

Didn't they mention that the crazy moff lady was left out of important position not because she's female but because she's batshit insane and keep losing most of her soldiers?

No, the stormtroopers only ever accepted men in it's rank and file. Women only ever served as officers or in administrative posts if they distinguished themselves.
