***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Alright /m/, we haven't had a group build in a while so I'll try to get the ball rolling again.
Choose or write in a paint scheme for the next build

I'm gonna say it's about a 90% chance that OP made the kit in the image, based on the earliness of this thread
>>
>>13627948

This is advice I would follow if my altron didn't come with a few extra small slides.
>>
I'm looking at using the torso and backpack from the HG G Bouncer for a custom, but the prices for that kit are at retarded GN Archer levels. Are there any other kits (besides the equally pricey Xiphos) that used the same torso? I'm not that up on my AGE.

>>
>>13627972

Yeah. The largest one on this kit is less than a centimeter wide fortunately. I'm looking at a pic of the tief strumer and wondering how those slides will even work.
>>
Alright I'm about to dive into this hobby. I read the sticky, is there any place to find reviews on the kits?
Also, I really dig transforming mechs. Is there any kit other than Kyrios/Arios/GN Archer on the market? Non-gundams can apply too.
>>
>>13628025
I'd recommend the RG Zeta, if you can handle it being flimsy and unstable as shit. Probably not a good place to begin.

Dalong.net has a good database of kit reviews. All done with pictures too so you can see how articulate things are, range of motion, ect. Also has scans of the instruction booklets so you can see how to put things together before buying a kit.

The kit grades will be on the top of the site with everything ordered by their individual release dates(oldest at top, newer/modern releases following.)

When sanding nubs, will you ever get the surface to be one uniform color if you go far enough?

What I'm saying is, will this black dot ever go away without painting?

I'm new to models, obviously.

Thanks.
>>
>>13628427
yes
>>
>>13628427
I scrape it with a hobby knife to get rid of as much of the stress mark as possible, but I'm kinda new to this, I'm sure there's a better way. I think matte paint helps too?

So apparently Revive Qubeley is getting articulated fingers just like the Super Fumina.
>>
>>13628446
I looked down and I found that I had sanded by hand away.
>>
>>13628427
Depending on the piece and how carefully you cut, you can sometimes remove the stress mark. I find being gentle and changing the direction of the cut every few sweeps helps. In general, light plastics are much easier to cut clean than dark plastics, with white obviously being easiest of all.
>>
I can't believe the shitposter didn't even save my shitpost that was the blurry nataku

Like for real? You post a bunch of shit things but not the stuff I make shitty? Are you even trying?
>>
when do you put your decals on a painted kit? Before top coating? And when's the best time to use that mark softer stuff?
>>
>>13628477
I don't know if it's the right way to do it but I topcoated after decals.
>>
>>13628477
After painting, before topcoating/finishing.

you want the topcoat to protect the decals. And you use the mark softer while applying the decals to make sure they're set nicely and conform to the contours of the figure.

You know, I don't mean no disrespect for you guys, and I'm happy you guys are into this shit and willing to learn lots, but I didn't think /m/ would be so full of well, noobs at this. How long have many of you been doing modeling in general?
>>
Fuck it, guess it's amateur hour
When should I start to care about painting?
I use the marker after painting correct?
>>
>>13627647
>>13627762

Thanks. I'm going to start tomorrow on this endeavor, so I can get a jumpstart on ordering a second Gogg if I mangle this one.

Also, if anybody can think of a decent monsterization for a Rozen Zulu, please don't be shy with suggestions. I have the Episode 7 version with the gimped hand. I'm really not sure what to do with it.
>>
>>13628494
Sorry I upset you. I was just curious if mark setter/softer was harmful to the paint or not, and if doing a light top coat would help decals blend in with the kit more. I'll just refrain from asking here for future techniques, then.
>>
>>13628494
I've been on and off for years but most of it was those Revell snap-kits. Real cars are more knowledge-demanding at the moment so I just tend to lurk here and absorb what I can. And without asking the question myself, I learned something new from >>13628477 and yourself. I didn't even know there was such a thing called mark softer.
>>
>>13628499
Yes, I guess. To what extent do you want to paint? I personally stay away from markers, but if you wanted to use them to panel line and weather, you do that after painting.

>>13628501
Oh, I'm not upset or anything. I'm just surprised. I'm by no means a master or anything, but figured you guys would be like, ascended-tier at this. Don't be afraid to ask stuff, at all. It's how you learn, and you can pick up on some really sweet techniques.

No, it shouldn't harm the paint. At the very least, I haven't had an instance of it doing so, but you should still let it dry and cure for a few hours before dicking around with more layers. What kind of topcoat are you using?
>>
>>13628511
>>13628501

I forgot to mention, just be careful with it. Don't apply too much, or else it will fuck with acrylics. But if you just dab a tiny bit and then get a cotton swab and lightly nudge the decal, you should be good.

And if you're absolutely not certain, you should get some plastic spoons or sporks, paint that exactly how you would your kit, and get some spare decals you won't use or are leftovers from previous kits, and practice there.
>>
Please do read the guide of you are new, there is a lot of good info in there
>>
>>13628477
don't use it for every decal. Only hard to set ones. I know alot of people who go crazy with the stuff, and sometimes ruin the decals
>>
i tried to remove a nub but i fucked up and i made a small hole in the piece, is there a way to fix that like fill it with something?
>>
>>13628538
If paint then putty and sand
If no paint then you're fucked
>>
>>13628538
Yes, putty. Pretty much anything you can fuck up can be fixed if you're patient and willing to do the work. Putty is your friend. If you don't want to buy some, you could try and make some with some tamiya extra thin cement, thought technically any liquid cement should work. Cut some leftover sprue material (Not a lot) and dump it into a paint mixing bottle, making sure you fill the thing with enough cement to cover the sprue material. Then let it sit there for a few hours and you should have some putty, more or less. It's gooey, but workable
>>
>>13628356
I have rex and ray, and sahelanthropus on the way soon, but haven't built them. I want to make sure I'm at the best I can before daring to touch them. Espcially now that some are discontinued
>>
>>13628545
>>13628546
thanks, idk about painting it because i am new to this, it is my second kit (denial) and it wasnt as easy to cut the parts off as the barbatos
>>
>>13628574
Make the jump, anon. Paint as soon as you can. You'll find it's satisfying and really brings your kits to life
>>
How about some confessions?

>started painting at my 5th or 6th kit
>was a poor high school student, couldn't afford an airbrush and compressor, so I hand painted a few of my kits, still have them on display despite how shitty they look in comparison to the airbrushed ones
>almost gave up on the hobby while learning to paint after accidentally melting one of the 1/100 wing kits
>only have one real custom, otherwise it's hard for me to stray from the canon paint schemes.
>I prefer military kits more, but gunpla is way more cheap and casual, so I just work on these with no real complaints, though I wish bandai released more realistic-looking stuff
>my grail would be a PG Zaku II F2, but nobody ever thinks of the F2 so it's nothing but a dream
>>
>>13628596
>I have been working on modding but have yet to fully panel line/topcoat/paint anything because the weather is ass here.
>>
>>13628408
I think it's the blue/teal, but that is pretty impressive.
>>
>>13628356
I know some people here have the kits but I don't think I've seen any built by them.
>>
Shit camera is shit, but that's beside the point. For a 1998 kit, I'm really impressed with the engineering on this thing. The functional shock absorbers in the legs are a nice touch.
On a semi-related note, it's been a while since I've cut myself doing gunpla, but this one demanded several blood tributes.

What do you guys think of automotive painters' method of treating orange peel by wet sanding with 1000-1500 grit paper, and then spraying clear coat to fix it all up?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPc_KDU_ECM

Because the general advice in gunpla seems to be either "strip that paint and redo it", or "spray another layer".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7jOpRlXk2M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MsVWj3fGkY

It looks very applicable to model kits. What do you think?
>>
>>13630875
They spray paint much thicker. Compared to that gunpla is like a skin thin layer unless you're handpainting. Feel free to try but most likely you'll end up stripping paint and repaint anyway. Try 2000 grit first. It will remove orange peel just fine.
>>
>>13630875
>wet sanding with 1000-1500 grit paper,
That's just going to strip the paint anyway on gunpla, idiot.
>>
>>13630893
One guy only started wetsanding _after_ the clear coat went on.

>>13630896
Tried it with handbrushed white paint on something as a test, the other week. 1500/2000 wet sand buffed out the surface good. After another so or other paint pass and another wet sand it was good to go for a clear coat.

The other one was a larger piece rattlecan'd with Krylon, and after one pass of the wet sand it was wonderfully clean and smooth.
>>
>>13630754
you gotta press the white panel above the red toe tip panel down more. Also for symetry you need to realign how the red panels are in relation to eachother.

pretty simple fix tho, just press your fingers on it and fuck around till everything is clicked into place
>>
>>13630919
Oh yea. I just haven't pressed them in cause I still need to paint them. Just building and organizing for now.

The real issue was, while trying to clean the nubs, I went a little overboard and sanded one of the little dimples on the back. Had to scribe that in. I'm gonna say it's mostly due to the shitty camera I have, but I'm glad it's hardly noticeable

The last time I painted figurines was when I used to play Warhammer Fantasy Battle. That was up 'til 1999. I was always told to thin my paints. In return, I asked "what is that"?

Even today, I do not know what it means. All I received was practiced smugness.
>>
>>13631006
THIN YOUR PAINTS

Thinning paint is adding thinner (Type of thinner depends on the type of paint you're using) to dilute it and thin it out. This allows you to paint more thin coats in multiple layers, which results in a more steady build up in the color which makes it more vibrant. Doing so also makes the paint look less thick and gummy when it dries. It aldo activates a built in chemical process that helps the paint bond snd level better.

Paint is formulated to be thinned.
>>
>>13631006
Using water or paint thinner or whatever the kind of paint you're using works with, mix it with the paint or at least get your brush nice and wet so the paint smooths out better

Well and people dismissing the 78 and Zaku because of their ages, but I suspect that is by people who never built them.

Ok.

If you want a big, flashy showpiece - 00 Raiser, Strike Freedom, Unicorn

If you want top-notch articulation and detail- Strike (Aile pack optional), Astray, MK II (generally considered the best all around PG)

If you want the best value for your dollar - GP01/fb (expensive, but you get parts to build either version of the Zeph, and can swap them out when you get bored. Also includes a unique hangar display for the gundam and its extra parts)

If you want something other than a Gundam - Zaku, duh.

Zeta and WZC are outliers. Not great but not terrible. Only if it's your favorite MS.

The granddaddy is fine too, but being the first PG it's also the most dated, like the Zaku, there's better kits out there in other scales
>>

Glue and aerosol cans have practical uses too, I know it's shocking
>>
>>13631192
>If you want top-notch articulation and detail.. MK II

I am noticing a fucking pattern here. The MKII is considered one of the best RGs, Is it something inherent to the design, or do Bandai just actually give a fuck about the RX-178?
>>
>>13631197
I suspect they apply lessons learned from the 78 and Zaku to it because it will never be the first one in a new line but it's popular.
>>
>>13631197
Because everyone loves to say MKII
>>
>>13631197
I think it's the former. To me, the MK II exemplifies a gundam. It's not overly complicated and flashy, but it also improves on the color scheme of the original, which we love but know looks like a clown toy.
>>
>>13631204
> To me, the MK II exemplifies a gundam
I agree. MKII and Nu are, to me, what a Gundam should be. They look solid, mature and Sensible (or as sensible as a big stompy robot with red clown shoes can be).

I suppose it's also because MKII has relatively large, flat feet. Nice and stable, meaning you can be more risky in your poses.
>>
>>13631197
It's just a ridiculously sturdy and iconic design

its also worth adding that PGs at least USED TO play the detailed inner frame card even more than the MG line. In recent years thats gone downhill, mostly Strike/Astray onward. But the MK II could be said to possess the most detailed inner frame, out of the box, of any Gunpla anywhere, ever.

What you are asking makes no sense.

No matter what grade, the second one you build will always be 'easier' than the first, not the other way around. It's an experience thing, not a difficulty thing.

I'd imagine that the Zaku and RX-78-2 have fewer parts than the others, but they are also older, and that may make them take more effort.

PGs are expensive, just go with your gut.

Don't bother with chrome plating version unless you like nubs. As for the kit itself, it's very very partsy. Almost PG level. It's a glue kit with a lot of parts and quite a few parts that you have to paint up if you want it to make it accurate, so be warned. I've yet to start painting mine.

It's undergated in some parts, but not others. A lot of crucial visible areas like the outside of the ankle guards are not chrome-plated, for example. It might be worth it if you don't paint (but you kind of have to with a kit like this), but if you do, buying a can of gold paint would be better.

Personally, I think the Bang Doll would be a better display piece if you don't want to paint. It's cheaper, and more fragile, but it looks fine without any paint. Lining and decaling is more than enough.

Being obvious doesn't always mean something is true, anon.
"Inflammable" is not the opposite of flammable, for example. "Congress" is not the opposite of progress. Driveway, parkway, etc...

I really want the stuff and wanna see if i can get amazon to give me free shipping on my next order for fugging up this much

What do you mean trolled? You're the coolest modeller ever, Snapfit-kun! I wish you were my dad!

I think you should keep it like it is, or put some way to combine them, although what I had in mind would probably be a bit too complicated for what it would be. Also, what base is that?

holy shit this mg heavy arms is so sturdy
i expected it to be flimsy shit.
any kits that are just as sturdy?

sure, when he's doing the project already and has a question about a step in the build.

not necessarily when he doesn't have a plan and just wants to kitbash an SD with HG parts

what kit is this?

Is it problematic to paint in 100 degree weather? I'm considering getting an airbrush, but because of space and other limitations, I will be painting my models outdoors. The only problem that I see is that it is dry and hot (80-100 degrees) for most of the year where I live.

Excluding wind as an environmental factor, is it challenging/impossible to paint with low humidity and 100 degree weather?

Thanks.
>>
>>13632236
I live in Arizona, and paint in my garage in the summer. It's 115 outside, about 100 inside. I see no problem with it.

It's probably not safe, but that's honestly the least of my concerns at this point
>>
>>13632236
Hot and dry is a hell of a lot better than painting in cold humid conditions.
>>
>>13632240
Good to know.

I live in southern Nevada, so it's more or less the same climate.

Thanks a lot, guys.

Finished my first diorama that I'm giving away for a real life secret santa. Their favorite series is the 08th MS Team so hopefully this is good enough. Good experience, and a lot to learn from. Water is such a bitch if you can't mask it off properly so I had to scrap that. The dirt is probably too saturated too.

Got the most bang for your buck too with options part out the ass.
Lacks the two tone color-separation most RG have but still looks nice as fuck OOB.

grey is the supperior choice for panel lining whites and other light colors. use brown for reds and yellows and black for darker blues and browns, though i usually recommend Sakura Pigma Microns for black since they have finer tips and stronger pigment than black gundam markers.

aww yeah finals over now I can get back to work on the psyco zaku, this kit is so much fucking work but I really love the design so I'm trying to stick with it
>>
>>13633596

I'm adding a magnet system for the shoulders, otherwise I would have to paint it with the shoulder armor on because the shoulders are split in half down the top... it's insane how much the design of how the kits go together has improved since the glue days
>>
>>13633531
it depends on the color of the piece you are lining. Typically grey is used on white parts, black is used on blue parts, and brown is used on red parts.

It's personal preference in the end though, my personal preference is to use grey for white and lighter pieces but others use black and it can till come out looking good. It also depends on which kind of look you're really going for with your kit.

What's a good solid kit for a 7 year old?

Probably a Zaku without the commander antenna horn?

I'll set this kid off on the Zeek path I guess.
>>
>>13633656
I bought my 9 year old cousin the little build fighter thingys and that one master cheif kit from bandai, im sure most kits are fine as long as they're patient. Also if you have a harbor freight around buy them some $3 side cutters, thats what I did since popping out parts can be tricky.
>>
>>13633570
Wow, you're actually stupid enough to put the shields on the wrong way. There's a particle cannon on the pointy side of it, I would love to see Someone try to use the armed armor in series only to fire it backwards while holding it like that.

Good dio. Excellent result for a first try. You can try some glass-texture-like above the water next time.

>>13632539
I watched it some months ago. It's gorgeous. However, let me point some details...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovNbnjRUNQ

...It's pretty easier when you have an unlimited variety of textures, inks and products available in your own country. Japan has a lot of suppliers. USA, same history (video bellow). So...

...I'm not trying to 'diminish' the modeler's abilty. Both videos are top level, but let's be honest: it's not just a matter of 'ability'. Specific supplies make 50% of the show.
