***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Is the HG Zaku I Thunderbilt a good model for a first timer? I just saw what it looks like and holy shit I think it's my favorite Zaku.
>>
How often do you guys replace nippers and xacto blades?

I haven't changed nippers before and I usually replace the blade arbitrarily every 5 or so kits.
>>
>>13621758
I wouldn't personally suggest it for a beginner, you see all those little thrusters/verniers all over the body? Yeah those are all individual pieces that will need to be sanded and denubbed. There's also quite a lot of stickers on it and the joint coverings are pretty difficult to sand properly for a beginner imo.

>>13621766
I replaced my first pair about 6 months in since they were shitty dull xurons, blade gets changed about every 3 kits since I somehow manage to corrode the metal with my hands.
>>
>>13621771
Would it be easier to work with nubs if I use Xacto knives instead of sandpaper like the guide says? Also I am just saying cuz I ain't a fan of Gundam 00 or AGE so I don't want models from them.
>>
>>13621789
Sanding would actually be easier on the thrusters if you attach them onto some sort of drill and spin it slowly against a very fine sandpaper since they're circles.
Just get a normal HGUC Zaku I or II if you want a starter zeon kit.

I've already mounted one of the three extra thrusters, but I'm debating where to put the other two.

pic related shows the currently mounted thruster as well as the two others. All were salvaged from an old Gerbera Tetra I fucked up ages ago.

I did what I assume HnT did on his to mount things. I trimmed back the inner gey pegs on the thruster sides, lightly sanded down half of a clipped piece of 3mm runner, and used it as a peg to stick other things on. Just be sure to leave a mm or two of the grey peg.
>>
>>13621805
>>13621825
Aight thanks for the tips guys! So in terms of buying order, will I be fine if I over the next year work on:

First getting HGUC Zaku II and GM

Then either/or (try to do both):

MG Nu Ver Ka
MG Nu Sazabi

HGUC Zaku I Thunderbolt
Some Federation equivalent probably an RX-78-2

And once I got both of those pair go for my first Perfect Grade? I want my collection to have an equal amount of models on each side of Federation/equivalent factions and Zeon/equivalent factions with a Perfect Grade in the middle.
>>
>>13621928
Oh, and once you rig the connections the EZSR parts look good on Graze Custom. Too bad the arm guards don't fit right.
>>
>>13621928
>>13621928

It sounds like a solid plan

my original idea was to bulk up the current flat surfaces with about 4-5 layers of thick HIPS, wait for it to set and then drill a 3MM hole through it and attach it to the pegs on the back of the skirt, near the current thrusters.

Putting them up by the main thruster would leave the bottom pegs free for other addons, though. I'll mull it over and see what works best.

I'm also planning on doing something with the right hand, like giving it a massive gauntlet
and a bigger axe, but I've bot no idea where to start on that, can you think of any sort of arm mounts that would fit with graze's aesthetic that could be converted into gauntlets?
>>
>>13621938
I got an arm guard on my Graze Kai just fine. I had to snip off a piece of the tab to get it to fit in the wrist piece but it's pretty secure. It's a little big, but I think it looks just fine.

>>13621928
I wish I'd put a little more thought into mounting the Ez-Sr backpack on my Graze Kai. I ended up covering the peg holes with some styrene strips and then gluing the backpack onto the strips. It works and looks fine enough but it feels lazy and amateur.
>>
>>13621957
Sadly no, and I've been looking and thinking about it too. Graze has skinny little arms compared to most other stuff, and the wrists complicate things. If you can your best plan may be to sratch build something to fit around them. For a bigger axe he looks pretty good with the battlearms gun-axe. There's also an IBO weapon set with axes coming out next month IIRC.

The idea on mine is basically a "Throw all the spare parts and weapons on it" style of custom. So more thrusters, more guns, and a big propellant tank on the rear skirt.
>>
>>13621972

rip that idea, then. I'm not going to worry about scratch building extra parts for this kit until I've sorted out the thrusters.
>>
>>13621972

Mine was very much a 'make it look fast and give it bigger guns' kind of custom.

I originally planned to put some tallgeese thruster pods on it, but they were too big and made the kit look silly.
>>
>>13621993
>I originally planned to put some tallgeese thruster pods on it, but they were too big and made the kit look silly.
From the HG or the MG?
>>
>>13621998

the thruster pods were MG, the Graze Kai is an HG. it would've looked fast as fuck, but I just couldn't deal with the fact that the thruster pods were bigger than the graze's legs.
>>
>>13622005
Oh, yeah. I thought about that, too. Weight issues are a problem also. I have the shitty 1/144 coming in on Tuesday because I want to try and mount the pods on the Schwalbe Graze.
>>
>>13621993
I actually pln on doing that once I get the schwalbe. Along with the shield, head crest, and some other parts. From the 1/144 though.
>>
>>13621993
Why not use the Build Booster MK. II then?
>>
>>13622010

yeah, I'm actually messing around with mounts right now to see if I can rework these pods into detachable boosters like the on you see in ACFA, but I don't think I have the right connectors for the job ;_;
>>
>>13622017
Well, I'm sure yours will come out better looking than mine.,

Okay /m/, what kits have you gotten for other people this year?

So far, I've ordered an HG 00 Gundam, HG Kyrios, HG Bearguy III, and RG Aile Strike for four of my buddies, each on different levels of experience.
>>
>>13622171

Not a big fan of PGs, they are either too expensive as toys or something you really need to devote yourself to for the love of one suit if you are doing it right
>>
>>13622176
I bought a bar of soap for one anon here and a HG Zaku II for another.

>>
>>13622181
If you think PGs are too expensive, don't ever go on /tg/ the Games Workshop prices may give you a heart attack. I am the beginner poster >>13621758, >>13621789, and >>13621937. My plan was that now that I am done with college and making real career job money to finally get into modelling stuff. It was either Warhammer or this. Gundam stuff is like much more detailed for comparatively chump change, so I picked this.
>>
>>13622203
>TITANS winning
Good.
>>
>>13622217

in terms of modelling then, they just take too much investment for me per kit, I would only build a PG if I loved the suit so much that I could devote the months to a true PG build

I am getting PG unicorn for christmas, but I don't know if I will have time to do it properly till summer

Mostly I just like the weirder suits more, if there were a PG guntank I would not think twice about it
>>
>>13622229

literally the most pleb choice, if build fighters were real every nerd would have some Nu or Astray in titans colors with some magazine weapon parts slapped on oh god kill me so disgusting

>>13622296

yeah, it needs some kind of armour around it. I can probably do something simple with Pla-plate to flesh it out a bit more.

I'm not 100% sure about even keeping the pods cos they're a bitch to pose, but at the same time they don't honestly look all that bad.

you have to find some way of extending the pegs outwards just to give you enough room to strap the pods on.

Best early christmas ever. I'm gonna wait a bit to make the RG because I'm shit at cleaning nubs and I don't want to fuck it up. Those markers are neat, even if I am a bit ham fisted at applying them.

I think you'll find that the RG models are impressive beyond anything else. My first kit was a RG RX-178, and even though I fucked it up in some places, it still looks absolutely killer.

The RG line has actually spoiled my expectations. I built a HG G-Self and it's just not the same. The plastic and the articulation aren't even comparable to the RG.

I have the HG Char's Origin Zaku II coming in the mail. I can't wait to put that together.

Well, I finished my PG MK2. It wasn't nearly as bad as I though it would be, though it did take all of my free time for the past 4 days. Still need to do some touch ups and then decals.

I'm trying to decide on my next project. I'd like to start painting, so I've got a selection of models that can use some paint.
1. Kobu from Sakura Wars. Molded in one color. Definitely needs some paint before it can sit on the self.
2. Vigna Ghina. It's an old kit, not bad, but relies on stickers for color. I'd like to fix that.
3. Ancient resin kit for Yuna from Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. Mecha musume counts as /m/, right? It's huge (1/5 scale), so there's a lot of volume to cover, but the details are large, so it might be good for practice.
What do you think would be best for a beginner painter?

Honestly, I didn't care to paint with them. My HG Turn A didn't end up so nice.... for panel lining, I think they're excellent if a little bit pricey.

Sorry I can't do much better on the pictures aside from taking him somewhere with better lighting. My main camera's broken, so I'm stuck with just my cell phone cam for the time being.

I can say, it's articulation is amazing, with the possible exception of the waist joint, it blows the MG out of the water. The joints are a bit stiff, but you don't want to be moving it around fast anyways.

If you get one be careful when assembling the cockpit. If you accidentally put it together wrong (I accidentally put the door on upside-down), it's night-impossible to take apart. Also, I found the electrical system a little fiddly. It was hard to get the on/off switch to work right, and you may have to strip the cockpit light wires to get them to fight like it wants you to.

Ok, gonna start working with pla plate for some custom ideas I have stuck in a notebook. Besides having fresh sanding sponges, liquid cement and super glue, super sharp hobby knives, nippers and a rotary tool is there anything else I should keep on hand to make working with this stuff that much easier? I was thinking about getting a heat gun to help with some odd curves and such, maybe a drill press as well so I can line up polycap holes evenly. I've used brass rods in other models through the years, mostly cars and jets. That shouldn't be TOO different from gunpla, as the hobby goes. Am I missing anything else you pro's use, or am I talking to a squad of snap builders?

Short answer, you can't. At best you can wait for a HLJ sale and hope they put some of their low-selling 1/144s on sale, and those have probably mostly dried up by now.

The Command Wolf I got for 1000 yen was on sale for 1500 last time, so they must have been desperate to get rid of it.

that's why I picked it. it's one of the closest to "the line"

You could make an even more accurate sexia very easily with some wider spacing of the leg joints and bringing the chest sides in a bit. Shoulders are super wide just to try to avoid the trans look.

I'm working on my Gogg Kraken for a team of monster-themed Gunpla. This is the first time I'll be moulding putty, so I'm practicing here.

What do you guys think? I plan to have a big row of teeth and a bone protrusion on the brow. There's also going to be a set of smaller spikes on the back of the head, along with small bony protrusions here and there.

I'm debating extending the post and ball the head sits on, so I can model it with the mouth open, but then I have to model the interior of the mouth. Any ideas/help?

Approach anything you add made out of putty or otherwise sculpted as if it is the only thing people will be looking at, because it probably is.

Put as much time into that as you would into the kit as a whole. If you think something looks good, look at it magnified or take a picture of it with your camera and look at it on the computer.

Because you are making something sort of monsterish, you need to think about which way you are going with it. Is it a monster based on the gogg, or a gogg with monster looking additions? How will the teeth be set in the body, not only for the model, but for the concept. Do you need some sort of gums, etc? Think the whole concept through.

I'm assuming you've done some work with putty before. How do you keep fingerprints off it? I tried using medical gloves but they just fuck up my dexterity, bunch up in small amounts and ruin anything I try. Also, any other tools I should look into using?

As for the concept, >>13626805 is what I'm working with. They're clearly robots but modified to look like monsters.

I also only have so much time to work on this model, as I have to finish the team of three by the end of March and I'm slow as fuck, so if something goes less-than-perfect, so be it. I'll have to learn and move on.

>>13627463
If I would have been smarter during the draft, I would have thought of that. I have a Rozen Zulu Episode 7, Gabthley, and Gogg.

you can't totally get rid of fingerprints with many things, I use 2 part scuplting epoxy to sculpt this kind stuff (apoxie sculpt) and it's sandable when it hardens, so you just smooth it down after.

For other stuff I use regular lacquer putty on top of styrene and then just sand it to shape, it's softer and easier to sand so it's better for some things, like when you need a sharp flat edge, but not quite as strong as the epoxy stuff. That's how I made the blade for my GM's weapon.

you will absolutely want some experience with that first

waterslides are pretty easy to master but also very easy to fuck up if you haven't done it before, especially if you are working with different sizes or new materials such as micro sol vs. mr. mark softer/setter etc.

The aptly named fetish version is sold out I believe. But If you click the button that shows all the pictures on the link you provided, it does show those extra parts. I just can't translate enough to know if it actually comes with those parts.

I would have picked this up if I could into all the frills.
>>
>>13627943

just order a set of waterslides from samueldecal or some official bandai ones for any kit you have that you don't care about as much, the large waterslides on your kit are more similar to an airplane kith with large graphics than anything else
