There is literally no difference between Saotome sending actual assassins to kill Ryouma and Inaho shooting down Slaine. Musashi dying was for dramatic effect. But all of the murder in the original series was put in solely to make the main characters look like psychopaths because Ishikawa thought that would be cool. The Getter and Getter G manga were DynaPro's usual manga adaptations of their TV stuff.

Things really start to pick up in Getter Go, where Ishikawa opts to deviate from the TV series and started introducing the idea of Getter Rays having a will of its own and its ability at assimilation of living organisms.

In the Shin Getter manga, he introduced more concepts like time-traveling that made getter even more sinister. He also introduces a whole new perspective of the Hyakki Empire.

Getter Robo Arc continues along with this idea, giving a full-blown view at how powerful Getter can be.

I like the tv version better, but that probably has most to do with how I personally think Akira Kamiya's performance as Ryouma is the pinnacle of super robot voice acting. They were, however, a bit too balanced, maybe.

The cast of Xabungle were more entertaining (to me) in that regard without going full personel, kid. Akin to a bunch of well adjusted teenagers hopped up on emotion and hormones.

Ideally it would have been the tv cast with a compromise between the violence of the manga cast and Xabungle's.

There's Aquarion too, with more of a focus on the combining than the drills. Nadesico made fun of it with Gekiganger. The different Braves series all have combining robots, even though they don't have multiple forms made out of different combinations. And some of the Transformers combiners in G1 could have their components shuffled around however you want.

It's just absolutely necessary for a character to have a meaningful goal in order for most readers to become invested in a story.

A character can be bloodthirsty, but they can't JUST be bloodthristy. If their entire personality is "goof who fight good" then they're not a very good character.

There has to be some factor that makes the reader POTENTIALLY capable of getting behind them, or else there's no reason for you to care whether or not they succeed.

Ryouma and Hayato, at the very least, seem like they were just not only dragged into piloting the Getter, but just rolled along with it with their only goal being to fight the bad guys, in spite of having virtually no personal stake in the situation.

So actually, in that sense, they ARE a lot like Saturday morning cartoon heroes, in that they're just fighting for the sake of fighting.

Literally everybody has that goal. It's easy for anyone to think "if I were capable, I too would fight this force of evil".

The problem is that that doesn't make it relateable, because most people can't imagine themselves in that scenario on a level that would draw any emotional connection to the situation.

The characters, as individuals, need to at least have a clearly defined thing they're protecting beyond "the entire world". The scale and responsibility of that is far too large for it to be relateable.

That's why I'm more partial to Mazinger Z. Kouji has loved ones who, before the danger even arises, he's shown to very clearly love, and they consistently serve to be the ones he's protecting throughout the story. Hell, he piloted Mazinger from the start to honor his dead grandfather. For I, or any other reader, it's easier to imagine protecting someone you're close to, like family or friends, than the entire planet.

The closest thing any Getter pilot has to that is Ryouma's dad, who he seems to only be honoring in destroying wannabe karate dojos. That's completely unrelated to the story, from that point forward, aside from being the reason for him being so badass.

Hell, it would make sense if they were just in it to protect themselves, but that's never clearly illustrated. That level of selfishness would at least make them more interesting, but you can only assume that they're protecting EVERYTHING that the enemy threatens.

I mentioned before that I'd only read about halfway into the story. I felt that Musashi had been introduced too early to seriously criticize him, so I was leaving him alone on purpose.

Although, Ryouma just being in it to feel challenged again is a decent goal, anyway. I just don't know why that's enough for me to be invested in him as a character. At that point, though, I can't claim that's a genuine criticism, because I assume there are plenty of people who read that and feel genuinely bad for him.

It's too bad that he reaches his goal as soon as the story starts, then.

So I just spent the rest of the night finishing the manga

It picked up pretty well. I came to like the characters just fine less for the reasons I was looking for, and more for their general banter, which humanized them way more than how they felt at the start.

I mean shit, I genuinely felt for Gore by the end of it. To make me sympathize with a villain as dickish and seemingly 2-dimensional as him is a mark of a good story on it's own.

I guess I judged Getter too quickly. I appreciate anyone who just straight-up told me to keep reading, though.

I'm probably not gonna be shitposting about G, but we'll see.
