About a quarter done. Two full chapters of 16 completed, and the rest have beginnings and some notes. Things have ground to a halt since my daughter was born but in a month's time she'll be moving into the nursery and we'll get our evenings back. Instead of focusing on my large scale work (final draft of a novel prior to submission, research and structuring for the next) I've been writing short stories and reading T S Eliot. The man's sense of rhythm in language is unparalleled and it's something I'd like to emulate in my own prose.

I am working on a series of fantasy novels/romances. I have the first one finished completely to my satisfaction and am currently looking for an agent. I'm actively writing the second one right now, though things are slow. This is just my first draft of it, and I'm feeling my way forward, figuring out the plot and the nuances of the characters. At some point in the future I'll write a second draft that smooths everything over.

I've been in a rut for awhile so I'm writing a simple fan fiction to get some practice and to get back into the habit of writing on a regular basis again.

I like the way it's going, but I'm a bit stuck on where to go. I'm at a point where the whole course of the narrative can change, and I'm not sure which direction to take it.

Would it be okay if I ask for some help?

Almost every character in my story either has a dead kid or dead parent. Am I a hack?

You would have to establish that both characters as psychological beings in the first place, or present them in a situation that a fist fight isn't reasonable.

I added a new character and perhaps the framework for a new arc to fit in some other ideas I've had.

The character is a henchman for my big bad with a standard backstory. She couldn't get things going as a good guy, and so starting a career in bad was her best option, because it paid better and they were nice to her.

So, since she is cute and didn't start off bad, everyone is gonna want to see her be redeemed, including our heroes. It's too bad and so sad, because I am going to make her irredeemable. She's been bad too long, and there's no good left in her.

The point of her character is to make you angry at the big bad and root for the good guys.

So, why would her story make you angry at the big bad? Well, the big bad is the government who does a bad job giving opportunity to everyone, especially those who are poor or otherwise living on the edge of society (hence why she couldn't get anything going as a good guy).

That brings me to the framework for the new arc. Our heroes are going to be traveling to the capital after one of them gets a vague emergency call telling him to return. Naturally, on their way back, they're going to be curious about what the emergency is, so I figure that on their way to the capital, they should come across more people like the henchman who have been abandoned by their government, and that will give them an idea of what the emergency is, and it will make everyone mad at the big bad and get behind the good guys.

Anyways, as for me, I've got two books self-published, got a sequel probably about 2/3 finished for one, but now working on an entirely new book that is BASICALLY probably going to be nothing short of gun porn... and I'm going to fucking love writing it. I've already shared the first few pages with a few people and they seem to generally approve, saying it sounds intriguing and that they want to read more of it.

Honestly, I'm not an approachable-looking dude when I'm just going about my business. It probably also doesn't help that I'm 6' tall, broad, and fairly strong. When my face is neutral, it seems to me that I look annoyed, angry, or maybe even mean. In spite of this I'm generally pretty friendly; when I am approached by someone or if I approach someone else, I smile, and they generally smile back. Typically I'm quite soft spoken and courteous, though I've had to put the niceties aside a few times before. You can't be nice when locked up, and I won't tolerate being condescended to or told over and over and over to do something that I already know I have to do like I'm some child. That shit pisses me off in a hurry, though I try to keep tabs on it.
