I don't think I've ever regretted reading a book more. It started off half-decent so I was hopeful that it would pick up later on because there were some interesting things to the world, but almost nothing happened the entire fucking book it was like a giant fucking introduction chapter and the interesting part where the guy goes out on an adventure and discovers the power of the wards is literally left out, there's a time skip and the dude just turns up being the edgiest and overpowered character to ever be written into existence while the chick spends half the book just deciding who she loses her virginity to. The two main characters turned into the biggest mary sue and marty stu types ever with literally zero flaws, I mean the whole thing about how the demons are so strong even armies can't beat them and they can only be warded off goes to the shitter when the MC starts murdering them alone with bare hands by the dozens.

Someone please recommend me a good fantasy novel to read, something light, with good writing and story. I enjoy Gaiman, Pratchett and Tolkien. And I don't want to read a "wannabe lotr" ebin series of a hundred books, I just want one really good work of literature that's also fantasy.

The way it combines space exploration with psychological examination was unexpected, but it makes for compelling read so far, with more characterisation and human interest than something like Rendezvous With Rama (another alien object in space story.) here's what I do.
I date some, and usually university girls, 19 to 23 therebaouts. What I do to check wether they are proper material? I do have some standards, so they should be reading for fun, so I can talk to them - about reading. ( but also theatre or movies or television ).

Interviews are very easy as the interviewer will essentially go over the rules with you and how to torrent and whatnot.

Most MAM books are available on Mobilism and the rest of the sites. However, the odd book that you can't find anywhere but can find on that website does pop up like the three books in this thread and people seem to upload pre-release ARCs (these are technically forbidden) but I downloaded one.

MAM is also about five thousand times easier than Bibliotik because private trackers require the user to maintain a ratio but MAM ratio can be bought with bonus points gained from seeding and you don't need to actually upload data for points.

MAM is better for lots of fiction and Bibliotik is better for textbooks and non fiction especially the ones that people rip off their academic subscriptions,

Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

And instead of Elantris I implore you to consider first picking up the Stormlight books, as they are better in my humble opinion. Even though I enjoyed Elantris.
Read Emperor's Soul whenever you want something shorter, it is a standalone story.

They are not interconnected, and you've already met for example Hoid in the first Mistborn trilogy and in Warbreaker, there really aren't any more minor characters you have to meet. Though some aspects of the world of the Cosmere are better explained in Stormlight, but added more abruptly in the later Mistborn books.
So I would recommend Stormlight, unless of course you would want to go for the more light-hearted tone of the second set of Mistborn books.
Bear in mind that Stormlight 1 is 1007 pages in length, book 2 is 1088. while the remaining Mistborn books are 1319 in total.

Most of the well known 20thC dystopian novels are not American, but British (BNW, 1984) so you may have something. But there is a large vein of pessimistic SF going back to PKD at least. It was the American golden age stuff that was more optimistic.

hi fantasy guys, can any of you help me? I'm trying to remember a book I read back in 2013/2014; it was a trash fantasy novel, first in a trilogy, and it started off with a Monk who beats ass with his bare hands. Then he had to heal himself with like, universe energy or something. A lot of the book is missing in my mind, but then at the end he steals some kind of magical/enchanted sword and kills the big bad.

This book won a lot of awards when it came out in 1977 (Hugo, Nebula, Locus) and it still holds up well IMO. It combines a narrative of space exploration and relic hunting with a series of psychological explorations, years later, during the narrator's therapy.

There is lot of psychology and character study in this book, a lot more than I expected, with a protag full of guilt, repressed memories, sexual hangups and mother issues. The way these are unraveled by the therapist, while details are gradually and obliquely revealed in the space exploration narrative, is the most interesting thing about the book.

Also, I thought all of the randomly inserted media (work rosters, contracts, mission reports, classifieds, technical notices, memos) worked well as a device, giving a fuller sense of the spaceport and the life within it.

Anyone else think the appendices in Lord of the Rings are kind of boring? I love the main narrative, but I just can't seem to get into the lore setup. Does this mean I wouldn't care for the Silmarillion?

Well the Thrawn one is super fun insofar with small but effective plot twists.

Karrde reminds me of Komme Medean from Dagger and Coin and Pellaeon is fairly down to earth.

The issue with the Thrawn trilogy is that it plays it too safe with the movie characters and the original characters like C'baoth, Karrde, Thrawn, Pellaeon and Mara are significantly more interesting than them to read as a result. The best Star Wars books are probably books inspired by Star Wars but don't cite it as an inspiration or are essentially published fanfiction with all the references changed, but what these books would be I wouldn't know.

As for the best Star Wars-like book, that's the Foundation trilogy hands down and the Mule is amazing.

I don't know where eveyone is getting these scifi mind powers from though, Gundam has its Newtype powers, Star Wars has its Force powers, the Second Foundation and the Mule have their mind powers, Code Geass has the Geass and Hyperion has trips through the Void Which Binds.

Listen up faggots, I am going off-the-grid for an entire month in the next few days. I am planning on reading a big ass fantasy saga, but I need it to be worth it.

Which saga should I read? I have heard about Dune, Malazan book of the fallen, Discworld, Sanderson stuff.

If you were going to do it, what would you read?

Black Company is pretty great. There's a real sense of dread through the whole book. It's one of the only fantasy books I've read where, when magic really comes into play, it's a real "Oh shit, they're boned" moment.

Gundam Origin (Anime) - scifi/revenge. The first four episodes detail the beginning stages of Char Aznable's revenge plot against the ruling Zabi class. Char is a bit more sociopathic than Darrow and nips love the blond haired character revenging himself on the elites for wrongs such as dead waifus and dead family members.

Darrow's pretty much a Char clone except a bit more boring and the author relies on the interesting setting. plot twists and prose to make it tick. A lot of the more recent inferior scifi animes have similar plots for example Aldnoah.zero's plot is quite identical to Golden Son too. Blonde haired Slaine Troyard (a Char clone) is lowly and is considered by the Martians to be inferior and he gets adopted by the Olympus Knight Saazbaum who is in charge of territory and has resource and influence who is responsible for the attempted assassination of his waifu. After his waifu is put into a coma, Slaine aligns himself with the ruler of Mars and kills his adoptive father suceeding him as Olympic Knight. After defeating two of the Knights who really hates him, he directs the invasion of Earth himself, his waifu wakes up and rejects him and then he ends up in prison for life. Too bad this anime (Aldnoah.zero) was only well written in the first three episodes and the writer switched to someone who could only write filler.

Traitor Baru Comorant (Book) - magic lite fantasy/revenge. Female protag, very /u/. It's a fairly good dystopian although I enjoyed 1984 more.

Hamlet (play) - revenge/supernatural. Too bad this is a play and also very short, someone should write a fanfiction that novelises it properly.

The Count of Monte Cristo is also a pretty good revenge story but does not count as /sffg/.

Actually good scifi space operas but not revenge based:

Impactful books are few and far inbetween which is terribly annoying as there are so many animes (ranging from good to abyssmal) on the subject whilst westerners are stuck on shallow and terrible tropes like Hunger Games.

What you get is one of the first "modern" types of Urban Fantasy. She raises the dead, kills the dead, gets caught up in shit. If you listen to the audiobooks you get a voodoo-like soundtrack and gunshot effects when she raises the dead. This was before Graphic audio, and it's what kept me coming back to the books.

Whatever you do stop at Obsidian Butterfly no matter what. It does not get better. Her husband irl was leaving her and the story took a dive. Anita became a cock hungry Goddess™®© who "literally" can't survive without dick. (Basically a sex vampire).

I read The Pre-Persons by Philip K Dick, his 25-page short story from 1974. It depicts a future where twelve year old boys can be packed into white vans and then legally aborted if they don't know algebra. PKD is criticising what he sees as the arbitrary thinking behind allowing abortions (allowing them on the spurious basis of when the soul enters the body). It's an enjoyably heavy handed story.

I feel like I should dislike Robert Howard and his Conan (a complete Mary Sue) but The Tower Of The Elephant is an enjoyable short story. Judging by this, Howard is a very visual writer and an unabashed entertainer, somebody who can cram many exotic scenes and weird + violent twists into few pages. Maybe it helps that I don't read a lot of fantasy so the cliches don't bother me (I'm more a SF reader.)

I have completed a number of writing projects and there are some clearly identifiable themes across all of my work.

My fantasy work is generally an alt history setting which I've developed over the years to pure autistic intricacy which also retains a very strong sense of humour. I don't want to drop great reams of prose on you but it departs from our world in the early Renaissance.

My science fiction has a golden age Sci fi vibe which I haven't seen in anything published in years. I like exploring strange new world's and find modern science fiction too concerned with inverted navel gazing.

My questions for you, oh worthy /lit/erati are as follows:

Book 8, maybe 10 tho I'm only 200 pages in. It'll probably just be a short wrap up or something. Orb Sceptre Throne takes place in Darujhistan, mind you.
Not gonna lie, book 5 is difficult to get through with the Edur and book 7 is somewhat similar, but fuck me they're worth it.

I read in the Guardian that scientists are two years away from resurrecting the wooly mammoth, through a process of injecting splicing surviving DNA into Asian elephants. This reminded me of the megafauna found in Gene Wolfe's BOTNS.

Our post-apocalyptic/dying earth would now conceivably contain giant hairy elephant/mammoth hybrids, perhaps along with smilodons and whatever else passes the fancy of our current generation of egg-heads, depending on what they find encased in the ice of arctic circle.

We live in science fiction.

Just finished Red Rising, and it was pretty damn great. 8/10 trilogy.
Anyone else here read it?
Ending spoiler: I just have to vent some frustration with the ending though. Mustang, a character I was not a huge fan of to begin with, really soured the ending for me. It was obvious the author was going for a 'Happy ever after'-ending.
The author just throws in the whole 'Oh and you had a child this whole time and I didn't tell you because I was testing you'-bullshit and then doesn't go into what feelings and then glosses over the MC's reaction to it. All we get is 'How could I be mad at her?'.
I mean fucking really? I get that you just found out you have a child and you love your girl and all, but surely there is some hint of pain at not having been trusted by your loved one? Some sense of betrayal, however little, about how he could have died without ever finding out that he had a son? I'm not saying he should be pissed off, but at least a little irritated, perhaps not right away, but surely after he has had time to process the fact that he has a child.
Forgiveness feels so unsatisfactory if we don't at least get to hear part of his thought process.

Fantastic trilogy though, even if there were some pretty glaring plot holes at times. Loved the whole 'Romans in space'-theme.

Nothing really comes to mind, because the Silmarillion isn't really a "novel" in that sense. It's more of a compendium of lore written in a biblical style. It tells the "story" of middle earth itself, a record of the world, the "gods", and the elves, and the great and terrible deeds done in those times.

Yeah, I've read Kalevala and like that, it feels like the national epic of Middle-Earth.
I first read Silmarillion when I was about 12 and absolutely hated it but then about 10 years after that I really liked it, though not in the traditional novel sense.

I remember scratching my head over a couple of smaller things in the first book, but I can't recall what they actually were. Pretty minor stuff.

But the big one was the hidden rebel city, whatever it was called. The Jackal had spies in his medium-sized fleet, but not in a hidden city with millions of people? Not a single infiltrator to tell him where millions of people were running off to? You know he would blast that place to pieces just to spite Darrow if he knew, or at least let Darrow know he knew, just to scare him.

The fleets position was never a secret though even at the end it turned out they got captured on purpose and probably knew that the Jackal was waiting all along, maybe leaked that they were coming to Luna. But I do agree it's pretty unlikely that many people go undetected, even with Mars having billions and billions on it. Think the city was mainly a refuge so people probably weren't allowed to leave as they liked so it's kind a stretch but not totally impossible.

It wasn't really about the position of the fleet, but about what they say as he's called away from the wedding. The Jackal asks something along the lines of "Is the wedding going alright?" And Darrow mentions in his inner dialogue that he's not surprised Jackal has spies in his fleet.
