>>9067580
Just finished it last month having never read Franzen and honestly, I loved it. It's basically just a character study of a family of 5 from the Midwest, one kid who is a liberal arts fuck up, another a basic high strung banker / suburban alcoholic and their sister who's a chef in the big city. The mom and dad are old conservative midwesterners and it all centers around them getting together for the holidays. It goes through each character's back story to present day showing how they became the people you see today. The prose was great and there is a good bit of humor. I know it gets shit on online but I really liked it, definitely one of my favorite pieces of modern fiction
>>9071107

>>9084146
>>9084146
Dutch bro, have you read The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen? If yes, what did you think of it?
>>9084161
No, but a couple of my friends have. They say it's a hilarious book about an old man living in a retirement home with keen and absurdist observations about his life, To be fair, most of the reviews I've read pretty much state the same: a very humouristic account and at times absurdist account of a man living in a retirement home.
I think one of the main reasons for its succes is not just the impersonal style and the humour but also the fact that almost everyone has a relative living in a retirement home as well, thus recognising the hilarious but also sad situations. Furthermore, it's a niche, literature about old people.
I might read it after finishing Paul Auster's New York trilogy to see if it lives up to the hype though.
>>9084233
I'm reading a Portuguese translation. Since I'm Brazilian I can't catch a lot of the Dutch references, but it's a very light and fun read nonetheless. I'm enjoying quite a bit.
You don't even have to wait to finish other books to start this, really. I for example am reading it alongside Brothers Karamazov as a comic relief for when I'm not in the mood for Dosto's work.
