I need a new fantasy series to start. Is The Dark Tower worth reading?

It's popular

Yeah, I guess.
The later books kind of drop the ball, but it won't matter if you're invested. Salem's Lot is semi-required reading.
Is The Dark Tower an "acid western" or is it a more or less conventional fantasy with Western elements?
I guess my question is how lucid is it? Is it a series of worldbuilding and absolutes, or a kind of drifting dream logic surrealism?

I would say the latter. It's written over such a long period that there's no real coherent world to speak of, rather just a series of events that vaguely fit together.

No. First book is a great start for an experimental new voice for King, but the subsequent volumes revert to stock King. Can't even remember how many of them I read at this point.
