Never happened
Can a book make you cry if you do not identify with any of the characters?

That part when Hitler dies.
>>
>>7600977
Yes, it's called empathy or sympathy.
>>
>>7600977

I think that with fiction its inevitable not to see even one trait of yourself in the characters. Even in subconscious manner.

I find Mishima's personality and view of the world to be the complete opposite to mine, but I was moved nevertheless.

I'm a grown-ass man, and books make me cry way too easily. Even if the book has only mild drama near the end, I'm likely to shed tears. I've cried over The Catcher in the Rye for fuck's sake.

When I was a wee babby I broke out in a cold sweat and teared up when it was revealed that Mersault would be sentenced to death

That book especially, because I knew that there was no way Camus would give his character an escape before he died

Plus my eyes watered in repulsion when Sproule took his bandage off in BM
>>
>>7601743
That's a weird thing to cry at since Mersault himself is indifferent to the whole thing.

When Phoebe gets mad at Holden near the end and follows him on the other side of street, until the part where he watches her on the carousel.

That part made me weep.
>>
Okay but fucking seriously. This is a writer that has somehow just with each sentence made me cringe. Not in particularly bad way. But something s deep and cutting, I just whistle "wheeewwww." It's not that it's "blunt" in its honesty. It's the composition of a simple sentences honesty. Jesus Christ, this book is so fucking simple yet so fucking heartbreaking.

I recommend on this board a lot, but I highly don't any anon has yet to read. But I beg someone please just read so I don't have all this shit-ton burden weighing on soul.

I've been reading a lot of Faulkner lately.

Absalom, Absalom! when I'm not your brother. I'm the nigger that's going to marry your sister and again at the ending I don't hate it!

Sound and the Fury, as well as Light in August, sporadic and very intense tears.

Others, recently, would be the final scene in Augustus (damn, John Williams, that was a masterpiece), as well as the ending of Mason and Dixon, which I finished like 4 months ago and want to read again already.

The letter in the middle 60 pages of And the Mountains Echoed is fucking amazing, too.

It hit pretty close to home for me, especially the childhood and college sections about being the "clown", but like >>7601433 said he does become a huge asshole towards the end. He thinks that he is completely cut off from society but shows that he is capable of empathy and wants to be a part of society. Maybe that was the point of the book, being a fuck up that's too miserable to change

I came for the parallel-dimension Glasgow but wound up sticking with it for the author's self-insert autobiography.
I know a few emigrants of that same generation (postwar and early 50's), so Thaw's story really endeared itself to me.
And Gray understands what it's like to be a virginal autistic NEET faggot better than any author I've yet read; shit hit WAY too close to home.

This shit hit way too close to home.

>TFW you feel like a helpless vermin that is nothing more than a burden on your family, no matter how hard you work.
>TFW your father thinks you can only enter the adult world through hostility and getting beaten down
>TFW your own health/sanity is questionable but your concern doesn't even compare to the anxiety of how you'll get through the day at work.
>TFW your sister is the only person who shows genuine love and compassion towards you.
>TFW even she stops giving a fuck because you are so worthless.
>TFW your family is happier and better off without you.

Jesus fucking christ; name one short story more depressing.
>>
“What chatty Madam Shpolyanski mentioned had conjured up Mira's image with unusual force. This was disturbing. Only in the detachment of an incurable complaint, in the sanity of near death, could one cope with this for a moment. In order to exist rationally, Pnin had taught himself...never to remember Mira Belochkin - not because...the evocation of a youthful love affair, banal and brief, threatened his peace of mind...but because, if one were quite sincere with oneself, no conscience, and hence no consciousness, could be expected to subsist in a world where such things as Mira's death were possible. One had to forget - because one could not live with the thought that this graceful, fragile, tender young woman with those eyes, that smile, those gardens and snows in the background, had been brought in a cattle car and killed by an injection of phenol into the heart, into the gentle heart one had heard beating under one's lips in the dusk of the past.”
― Vladimir Nabokov, Pnin
