There's three basic methods.

MILD - repeat something like "I'll realise I'm dreaming" over and over all day and while you're in bed and hope you manage to do it while dreaming.
WILD - Sleep without losing consciousness and wait for a dream to start
WBTB - wake up about 1-2 hours earlier than normal but don't wake up TOO MUCH, then go back to bed. If that didn't work, use an alarm every ten minutes until it does.

None of thiswill matter if you don't already have top notch dream recall.

Best way to notice you're in a dream is to perform some reality checks

my favorite is counting the fingers on one hand. If there's more or less than 5, you're dreaming.

Since your skin sounds similar, try going really light maintenance on it. Acne is gone anyway.
