I work in public policy in a particularly technical and admittedly science-oriented field, using advanced GIS. I make $70k plus benefits, plus about $20k a year in an under-the-table side gig.

My employer flat-out told me that most of the applicants to my position were STEM majors with technical skills that rivalled mine. My competitors, however, did not the necessary research or written communications skills to succeed in the job. I guess years of churning out research essays paid off.

But real life it'll be a cs major with a civil engineer with an environmental engineer with some finance guy and they all have to communicate themselves effectively to get shit done.

No, not really. Believe me, not everyone is built to be say, a programmer or electrical engineer. And it takes years to master the skills you need.
Employers are expecting you to come to the job with those skills from college. And these are tough majors to excel in, so the graduates command the best entry-level salaries for a reason.

The standard IT team does not require every single person to be eloquent. You have plenty of roles in place (PM/scrum master, BA, designer etc.) that will facilitate communications and more importantly, identify and document requirements that the technical staff can use to develop a solution.
Being skilled in multiple areas is always useful, but there are plenty of 6 figure salaries paid out to highly technical people with low communication skills. I work every day with people in this field, this is extremely common.
On the flip side, I see people who have managed very well with a liberal arts degree like mine, but their roles are typically hybrid ones and they do pick up technical certifications on the way.
There are also firms out there who almost never make exceptions to STEM hires. Exxon Mobil is an example, they're religious about hiring engineers, usually chem.

Korea just has one out celebrity, right? Hong Seok-cheon who came out in 2000. That seems so depressing... almost two full decades later and no one has followed suit. From what I've read, their media is full of gay innuendo but it's acceptable because the concept of gayness is so distant that all the "trip and fall into accidental same-sex kiss" stuff is only ever seen as a harmless joke- like the idea of it being legimitately gaaaay doesn't occur to people.

Is that why that Korean movie Ah-ga-ssi (The Handmaiden, 2016) was a pretty big success? I mean, homosexuality as a term is mentioned 0 times in total in the movie but it has extremely explicit lesbian scenes. Even for Hollywood standards. (I really recommend this movie to everyone, it's like Basic Instinct but pro-lesbian and in a historical setting.)

People just don't seem to think much of it if it's solely in the media, I guess.
