The key thing here is the detachment of their looks from their identity. They don't identify with their looks because they are outside their control.
Getting complimented on your pretty eyes isn't as meaningful as getting complimented on your hair if you put a lot of effort into your hair.
If you don't identify with your looks, having them complimented is like someone telling you "good work on building the great wall of china." It will only mean something to you if you care about whom it's coming from.
