Any therapist that tries to tell you how to fix your problems is a quack. The job of a therapist is to facilitate your exploration of your own problems.

That said, he might just not be a good fit. I saw a therapist for a year and it did very little so I ended up switching. I've been seeing my new therapist for like 2 or 3 years and she's dope.

They need to identify what is depressing them, and then find solutions to fix or mitigate that. Antidepressants can help make the climb out easier, but they are not assured to help.

I went into it thinking I would just talk about my life and then my therapist would tell me what was up. This set me up for some resentment, unfortunately. I felt annoyed that my therapist didn't seem to understand what was going on for me and as a result was giving bad suggestions.

Later I realized that suggestions are good because the reason I don't take a given suggestion reveals more to me about myself.

I'm a big believer in talk-therapy as opposed to CBT. Just having an impartial person, who's on my side nonetheless, to bounce feelings and ideas off has really helped me.
