I did it for my senior thesis project, we needed smt because it was wifi frequency stuff. I did it by hand for prototype and got it done professionally for the final project

hand soldering smt isn't really super useful in general tho. desoldering is, but even prototypes usually go to a manufacturing place if you're doing design professionally after college. and if you do have to solder you usually have a hot air gun that makes it much much easier and safer
