I'm Welsh, I've got Irish ancestry three generations back (on my mum's side), and Scandinavian an unknown distance back on my father's.
I'm extremely pale, I've got blue eyes, some freckles in the summer, mousey/dirty blond hair, and yet my hair is naturally really thick and messy and curly. I straighten my hair while my dad keeps his short, but when I don't straighten it my hair looks bizarre. It's not necessarily an afro or a jewfro or anything since it's not wiry, but it's really big and messy with thick (not small) curls to it.
Firstly, what part of my ancestry is supposed to explain this? My sister and mum have straight hair (my sister's hair is insanely straight), while my dad has the same as me but he keeps it short so it looks straight.
Secondly, is there a way for me to straighten it well? It seems to either look too straight (like 2007 scenekid straight, you know?) or it just looks like a thick mess, almost like a fifties housewife or something. It's awful to manage. It seems to have an unnatural strength to it since when it's dry and not straightened it can support itself pretty well, like, it doesn't drag down by gravity very much even though it's around 8" long at the sides. The bottom layers at the side have a habit of not staying so straight if I don't burn them into submission, so they sometimes push outwards and make my hair look unflatteringly thick.
I use a smoothing shampoo and conditioner, and straighten my hair at 230C, but I just feel like it's not right in some way.

Am I missing some obvious haircare tips or what? I'm as European as they come, it shouldn't be this hard to have nice straight hair.

Perhaps, I used to do it at 200 but frustration led me to upping the temp to the maximum, and it turned out to help a bit, but it may be the cause of the ugly over-straightening. Next time I'll do it lower, slower, and more patient. It takes about half an hour to straighten it already but eh.
