Guys I'm considering trying to piece together an M16a1 kit, or as close as I can to one. Are these as fun to shoot as say, an AK-74, or am I setting myself for an expensive let down? I really need a rifle for me and my gooky wife to rollplay "pow in vc camp" with, and a regular AR just isn't going to cut it for me.

Anon who received canted sight non mag releasing WASR yesterday here. Mine has very slight side to side wobble but zero front back, reliably fed and fired 60 rounds yesterday except for the fuckery where the mag release doesn't work with finger pressure. I had to use my bayonet in the field to put enough pressure for release until fucking around with it enough we figured out if you pinch the release and pull it downwards you can then release the magazine. Filed just a little bit and rough sanded last night to see if it would help, but didn't dig deep enough cause I don't wanna have to have some fucker replace it for me. Have croat and romanian mags, croat don't lock into my wasr or coworkers MM M10 so I think those mags are at fault, rom fit M10 perfect and his factory tapco didn't fit my rifle either. I built a 605 clone (slick sided dissipator upper w/a1 carry handle, a1 furniture, etc) a couple years ago and sold it shortly after test firing it for the first time alongside the AK63D I had just built. The AR just felt boring to shoot, same as the others I had owned previously, but I've still got the AK (along with about a dozen others that are complete or work-in-progress kits).

Tried again and the bolt thing must have been a fluke. If I hit the release without touching the mag in any way it moves fine, but if I'm touching the mag it will not budge. Also took the guts out of the mag to see if the follower was snagging something but made no difference.

Well that's the thing, my conversion has a folding stock. A nicely made internal trunnion with a push button folding mechanism that I can reverse to fold on either side of the gun, which is handy when using a side rail mounted optic.

So there are no practical differences to getting the SLR-104FR, just aesthetic ones. That's why I haven't made a move on a different rifle. I've got 3 intermediate caliber carbines including the Saiga which fills the AK hole. I really only want a single AK in my collection, leave room for more variety.

I kind of rode that train already with milsurp bolt actions. At one time I had a whole closet full of Mosins, Mausers, Springfields, etc. Eventually realized that I rarely if ever shot most of them and only owned most of them because they had a single feature or something I thought was "cool". I've since sold off everything but a single Kar98k. Some guys want to have 6 AR's, some want to have a dozen AK's, I prefer one really autistically chosen example of a few different things.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with someone having a well curated collection of AK's or any other type of gun. It can definitely be rewarding all on it's own. I just get more enjoyment out of things I use than things I don't, and when I had a bunch of same-but-just-slightly-different guns the only ones that got used were the 1-2 I liked best anyway. So personally, I've decided I prefer to keep a single example of most things. Let's me focus on getting the most out of each, too.

There's certainly no shortage of convoluted, difficult to follow mental gymnastics associated with firearms purchasing decisions available for all to see on the internet.

I'm about 10 years into the hobby now, and I've definitely gone through a few phases. First was the noguns shitposter phase where I somehow had an opinion on everything whether I'd ever even touched it or not. When I was a teenage poorfag everything was about "best value", "most bang for my buck". Anyone who spent more than absolutely necessary was an idiot and anyone who bought something less than what I considered minimally viable was no better.

Went from that to the "achievement hunter" approach, where I was trying to have one of everything whether it actually contributed anything interesting or fun to the experience or not. I'd buy anything that was a "good deal", and bought a bunch of guns mostly because they were something different.

The result of these two phases was a bunch of guns that I either didn't like that much, never shot, or sat as unfinished projects for years. Now I make purchase decisions based on them giving me a full body hardon, over a long period of time. I have to like the way they look, the way they feel, and the way they shoot while also being different enough from anything else I have. And I have to still feel this way 6 months down the road. Cost is no object, I'd rather delay a purchase as long as necessary than compromise because of price. I've been finishing up and selling off "lesser" guns and I'm getting closer to my "ideal" collection bit by bit. It's easy to tell which is which, because the ones I keep end up in my range bag on a regular rotation.

It's been true for me. Early relationship, 4-5 times a week. 2-3 years in, down to 2-3 times, now it's 0-2. Not that I mind, it isn't like I'm constantly after the pussy and she brushes me off or anything. You spend 5 years with the same person, at least a couple living together full time, and sex just loses its shine. Not that we don't still have great sex or that I don't enjoy it when we do, it's just lower priority and happens when it happens. You're not chasing it any more.

I'm sure it's at least partially biological. In nature, after being with a mate for a few years you'd already have sired a couple of offspring, and more would spread your resources too thin, or you would be looking for other bitches to impregnate to get your genetics all nice and lathered across the lands. Monogamy has real value in a modern society of sapient beings, but anyone pretending it's not a compromise of necessity and instinct is fooling themselves.

Women can't handle this kind of thinking and need to believe they're the only important thing in your life, satisfy your every need, and nothing else could ever make you happier or be more necessary to you than them, so we gently lie out of genuine love and desire to see them happy until we get old and die. Male burden is real.

It's not so bad though, even kind of comfy.

My long term gf is kindof a no sex before marriage person and so am I.
But the level we do stop at pretty much happens every day or multiple times a day. My appetite is insatiable, and hers kindof is too to some degree. Being a bit of a moralfag is tough on both of us, and I'd cave in much sooner than her if it came down to it. I can definitely imagine being less interested over time though. On a shittier note, had to RMA a vepr 308 rifle today. The bolt head had a lot of play and the ejector missed the groove and rode up on the bolt head. It's gouged and bent slightly so it needs slight tweaking/reprofiling and probably a new bolt carrier that doesn't let the bolt move like it does.
I could have probably fixed it by switching to my spare ak-74 bolt carrier that keeps things where they're supposed to be. But I'd rather get it done right. It hand cycled absolutely fine with that one where-as the original won't even feed without catching. I wish I'd gotten any other bolt carrier than the one that came with my gun.

Sounds like the mag release is a touch tight, which is fine. You could use a file or a dremmel and take a small amount off of the catch. We are talking about less than a tenth of an inch, so go slow and check often.
You could just leave it alone, mags tab is stronger steel and will wear down the catch over some use. Grab some more mags and practice doing tac reloads for a half hour, should do the trick
