Is there any substitute in sight?
>>34991970
its a big ass plane, what the fuck are you gonna replace it with
>>34991974
BIGGER
>>34991981
how big, big enough for MOAB carpet bombing?
>>34991974
An even bigger and more expensive plane with greater maintenance requirements. Duh.
>>34991970
Not until we find something else that likes to fly through a mother fucking hurricane.
There are three things you must keep in mind:
1- It does its job and it does it very well.
2- There are other more important things that need to be replaced, like our copters.
3- Improvements like the H and J versions have shown to be very great.
So there's that.

It's like he's not even american amirite?
>>34991970
For CAS: Make is a dozen times smaller and take out pilots in favor of remote controls.
For transport: leave it.
>>34992128
Isn't the AC-130 made for that.
>>34992240
It could be better, but fuck it. The C130 is great all around. Nothing will beat it for what it can get itself into for front line supply drops.
Not even a scaled up Osprey would be better than short rugged landings that the C-130 can manage.
>>34992290
What about a C130 with tilt rotors?
>>34992428
and people think the V-22 is a deathtrap...
Wasn't this supposed to be it?
>>34991994
so... how many are you buying?
>>34992636
The C-17 is strategic airlift.
The C-130 is for tactical airlift.
>>34992636
>>34992752
Also fun fact, a C-17 has higher gross weight and payload than a B-52.
it is second only to the C-5 in gross airborn mass in the US military inventory.
>>34991993
this is preferable
They got it right with the Hercules, there is no need for replacement.
>>34992007
>J versions have shown to be very great.
Not from an inspection/maintenance standpoint. Fuckers are going down status wise like every other day. H models have a drastically better uptime rate right now.
they need to sell civilian copies, and a boat plane variant.
I never saw a Marines Blue Angels Hornet though
The C-130 is one of my favorite planes.
There's something about giant propellers that makes me so damn happy.
>>34992636
No, that replaced the C-141 Starlifter.

Big enough to carpet-bomb with smaller planes that themselves are large enough to carpet-bomb with MOABs?

Opposite for me, I've only seen fat albert on the ground.
>>34993636
I actually got to ride fat albert a few years ago during an airshow. imagine a roller coaster with no track.

We bought 4. Saw them flying over my house in formation for a couple of days now.
>>34993163
Well one of the BLUES Hornets is always flown by a marine, so you have seen one, you just didn't know it.

>C-17 has higher speed, larger payload, same airdrop capabilities, and more airland capabilities.
The only thing the 130 has on its side is that it's cheaper to operate.

>>34992636
Saw one of these land at an international airport I work at. Wild looking with the flaps down during descent.
What's the advantage of propellers over jet engines on these big planes?
Do they have better acceleration to take off from smaller airstrips?

>>34997521
turbofans are better at higher altitudes and long distances while turboprops are better at lower altitudes and shorter distances. Big planes are part of strategic airlift (C-17, C-5, An-124) so they usually fly cargo long distances to a staging airfield outside hostile areas. The final leg will be made by tactical airlift (C-130, An-12) in semi-permissive/non-permissive environments. The turboprops are better suited for dirt airfields and there's less liability if they're shot down. Then there are some that are in between like the Airbus A400M and the Il-76.
Turboprops provide instant power compared to jet engines where it may take a second or two after going full throttle. This is why turboprop aircraft don't need to land at full throttle when touching down on aircraft carriers.

>>34999132
FaDeA makes some parts of the plane, the company literally survives because of it.
But no, they can't afford.
>>34991970
Its reliability speaks volume. The fact is, people from third world countries (indonesia, philippines, bangladesh, fucking pakistan) would rather buy an old B/E/T version and had it upgraded to H model (and stretch the fuselage) rather than buying a newer, cheaper chink/russian equivalent
Hell people would even bought a crashed C-130 and had it restored into a working plane again. It's like the Mi-8, where old airframes weren't really retired, they were simply passed around
>>34999172
It's cheaper, but loses to both in range, and loses to the airbus in max payload.
>>34999132

Not sure if they still do, but they've sold civilian C130s in the past. IIRC they never really sold well on the civilian market so it hasn't been a priority for them.

>the USAF decides to replace the c-130 fleet with quote "a lot of gyrocopters"
>troops just fly themselves wherever they need to go in great, buzzing swarms.
>cargo is sling loaded somehow (wait for a strong headwind, wing it and go slowly)
>heavy cargo requires 12+ gyros flown by the lightest twinks the airforce can find working in perfect concert
Yes perfect
>>35001175
USAF makes dumb decisions all the time, if a mass purchase of gyrocopters took place no one would be surprised.
