I am about to bid on this FR8. There is no pictures of the bore and I asked the seller to show me the rifling and I got "my camera is not that good, rifling is pristine" I hate ordering funs online.

Any reason to not believe him? Considering the outside finish seems fine could the barrel be shot out? Thanks.

A local gun shop has a Chilean. How is ammo cost with those? Maybe I'll go look at it.

Because they're trying to sell an item.

Hes probably right though. They got new barrels and .308 isn't corrosive or a barrel burner.

It depends. Mine is in the original 7mm. Some of them were re-barreled to 7.62 NATO in the early 50's (7.62 should be stamped on the reciever). 7mm is kinda expensive though, like .50-.75 cents a shot for commercial loads.

>>34971348
Pretty much everything. I mean, maybe the bolt release and ejector are interchangeable, but the mags, actions, and furniture obviously aren't. I say this because many people group them together as the same action and they aren't. The 1891 has better lug and extractor placement, and the cocking piece is noticeably different. If I weren't at work I'd put up some pictures to illustrate the difference better.

Nooooot great. That's probably worth $500 with the ammo. Combine the nugget and carbine and you're already close to $500.

IMR 3031, 4895, or 4064 are my personal favorites. Some people insist that you should only use .310 bullets but I've had no problems using regular .308 diameter bullets. Large rifle primers obviously, I like CCI 200s because they're supposedly the hardest civilian primers available (not an issue in x54r guns but I reload other calibers).

>>

Hmm. The only thing holding it down should be the barrel band and the ring at the rear, so you should just be able to lift it off from the front with the barrel band removed. You shouldn't have to do anything with the sight besides lift it like you already have.

Could it just be stuck on with old oil or grease gunk? I had a bitch of a time getting my rear barrel band off the other night for that reason, but afterwards it just came off easily.
>>
>>34975319
I think it's just stuck. I can get it to lift from the front but the back on the receiver has little give. Any suggestions on how to cut the grease?
>>
>>34975483
Maybe turn a hairdryer on it to soften it up a little? If its just grease it shouldn't be that strong if a bind at all. Maybe some of the more experienced tinkerers here can chime in?

The only other thing I can think of is that someone glued it down for some godawful reason, but that seems really unlikely.

A question. For a M93 Spanish Mauser, would an 8mm conversion be a possible hazard? I know US loads for 8mm are actually weaker than 7mm, but I'm just being doubly cautious. My uncle is sending me a only slightly sporterized 1907 made one and he says it's 8mm and I'd read there had been some conversions, but I don't have the rifle in hand yet so I don't know if it really is a conversion or not.

Spain did convert a small number of M1893 rifles to 8x57 when they switched to 8x57 in 1943. Also the Turks converted the majority of their M1893 rifles to 8x57 and they work fine. The M93 action is plenty strong, it just doesn't have the gas-handling safety features of the M98.

I have a M95 question, maybe you can help? If there isn't an "H" or an "S" on the barrel shank area, is it safe to say the rifle is still in 8x50 Mannlicher, rather than 8x56? The rifle in question is in really nice condition, so I seriously doubt it could have simply worn off.

Alright /k/omrades, I need some advice. There's a local estate sale coming up, and they have a Mosin with some VERY early features. No sling slots in the stock, sling swivel on the magazine, and no handguard. Most importantly, it has the original finger rest (like pic related). That feature was dropped in 1893 (less than a full year into Mosin Nagant production)! It also has WWI German capture markings on the stock. Unfortunately, the rifle is not at all matching - the receiver and bolt are the only matching pieces, and they're from 1913.

Given this information, it would seem that an extremely early Mosin was captured on the Eastern front, recaptured or returned to the Russians, and was then cannibalized. Old stock/magazine/barrel bands, new receiver bolt.

Should I bid on it, /k/? On one hand, the apparent history is really cool, and the finger rest is collectible in and of itself. On the other hand, the rifle looks a bit ratty (metal finish is spotty, tough not rusty, and the wood finish was probably lightly sanded at some point and looks then).

Well, if youre not worried about harming the finish around the hole a little bit, you could try using white vinegar to dissolve the rust. or use kroil. White vinegar is cheaper but it litterally eats rust away. I got a mosin from a friend who fired about 100 rounds of the corrosive ammo through it once and never cleaned the bolt. Needless to say, the firing pin looked like complete ass but after 2 or 3 days of soaking in white vinegar, it looked brand new other than the pits left behind by the rust. It will also parkerize the metal to a dark grey too if left in the solution for longer periods of time.

Does anyone have a good link or can you tell me where on an SKS needs to be lubricated and with what?

I know how to field strip and remove the rifle from the stock but I've never seen any articles that say what parts need lubrication. I know the firing pin needs to be totally dry and the channel kept free of any obstructions but what about say the piston, piston extension and return spring, etc?

Does the piston or extension and return spring need to be lubricated?

How about the bolt? Lithium grease or just a good oil?

I mainly use 3 in 1 machine oil for lubricant but are there parts on the SKS that should use a grease?

Dear lord man. Do NOT Sporterize something of that age and build! Putting a scope on is one thing, but cutting down the stock and barrel is practically a crime. If you do anything buy a stock that you can customize or cut down and keep the original.

Damn, I can't wait for my uncle's M93 to get here. Get a good look at it and take pics. It's been sporterized as far as putting a peep sight on it an a butt pad, but that seems to be about it. Just got done shooting these in our back yard. Lots of fun with my dad trying to hit milk cartons and Tea jugs at 100-300 yards. Got some with both the Chilean and the M48. My dad really liked the Chilean.

We're not regular shooters, so we didn't hit as many as I wanted, but it was fun, that's what counts right?

It's really your decision. None of the shit you're talking about buying is likely to go up in price, but the guns probably will. So if you sell either of them now and decide you want one later then you'll have to pay more for them.

Personally I have all my modern purchases on hold while I buy milsurp, but that's my choice, you may feel differently.

>>34981507

Just got back as well. Not a lot there for me either, I vaguely considered lowballing the guy with the butchered Berthier, but most of it was stuff I either already have or am not looking for.

Yeah, I saw that one too, I was thinking about it, but I don't know much about berthiers.
Did you get anything at all though, I just got a Swiss Army knife as a keychain.
>>
>>34981570

Nah, I'm trying to save for a new phone and then next year a new(er) car, so I'm trying to avoid too many frivolous purchases.

The Berthier was an M16, you can tell by the high-capacity assault magazine. But I didn't know if they'd cut the barrel down or not. If it just needed a new stock then that would be one thing, but I wouldn't want to need to try and source a new barrel too.

I'm interested in an SKS or a Springfield '03, but the '03s were starting too high and the SKS isn't high enough on my list to be spending $400+ on ATM.

>>34982351

its an M91 made in tula, 1913 rebarreled on 1891 or 1892 (check tang) receiver. stocks been sanded, original varnish stripped, missing cap, wrong cleaning rod

i dont know, its neat and definitely more unusual than the common refurb 91/30 but not really collector grade, i probably wouldnt give more than $450 but i also dont really like mosins anyway.

actually now that i look at it again, it looks like a 91/30 stock >>34979422

My uncle gave me his old Martini Henry he got some some kid during his travels in South Africa. Kid said it was passed down to him from his great great great grandfather. It was pretty long so I cut it down a bit and converted it to 308. Dropped it in this sweet archangel stock. Gonna take it out soon and bag some deer later.
>>
>>34982121
The Chinese used the C96 (and local copies) heavily. So while that particular C96 may not be from the era, it was definitely a WW2 pistol.
>>
>>34982448
>rebarreled on 1891 or 1892 (check tang) receiver
There's nothing in Anon's pictures to indicated that the receiver is older than the barrel.
>it looks like a 91/30 stock
With no sling slots or band spring slots it's definitely not a 91/30 stock or even a Dragoon stock. It's also too long to be a 91/30 stock.
>its missing the recess that anon posted on his for the barrel band
The step down in the stock is there; you can see the metal pin in the stock >>34979367 just forward of the step to keep the barrel band from sliding forward when it's tightened. It's just missing the very tip that goes inside the endcap.

the finger rest was only made on mosins in 1891 and 1892, so the trigger guard/magazine components are either not original to the rifle or the receiver was rebarreled at an arsenal

you can clearly see in his pic the stock is missing the recess for the barrel band, and the "metal pin" you refer to is actually the hole for the nosecap screw

see the step in wood level where it gets skinny for the nosecap? on his the nosecap would cover that entire skinny part, where the M91 stock has an inch or so of the same diamter wood before the band and retaining metal pin area

good point about the sling slots. maybe its a finnish stock. i dont know, maybe its a M91 stock with rare features

>Anyone else feel a rifle isn't complete without a sling? And for milsurp leather is the most aesthetic

Absolutely. I only have them on for M U H A E S T E I C S but its a necessity. Im not opposed to webbing, though. With some of the older ones the leather slings just dont really exist anymore. For example I have a reproduction leather sling on my GEW88/05 because good luck finding a piece of 127 year old leather that isnt garbage.

Need to snag one for my 1917 still.
>>
>>34982605
>the trigger guard/magazine components are either not original to the rifle or the receiver was rebarreled at an arsenal
They are not an integral part of the receiver; you can mount that triggerguard to any Mosin receiver made from 1891 to 1961. Far more likely that a rifle from 1913 was fitted with a stock from 1892 than that a receiver from 1892 was fitted with a barrel from 1913 but somehow not fitted with the sling slot upgrades or had the finger rest removed and the slot for it filled in.
>where the M91 stock has an inch or so of the same diamter wood before the band
No it does not; the end of the M91 stock steps down twice; once for the upper barrel band to abut against and once again to fit into the endcap.

>>34982635
Glad you learned your lesson.
>>
>>34980853
Nice! My grandpa recently gave me the gun he brought back from WW2. I'm not sure what it is, it's kind of ugly and the magazine is on the left side for some reason. It's not too bad but seems like it's gonna be too heavy for hunting season. I'm gonna shorten the barrel and get rid of the big heavy wood on the front. I'm also gonna weld a picatany rail on the top so I can mount my favorite NcStar scope. Any tips /k/?

>there is no step for the barrel band
Yes there is. Note that the step down for the endcap involves a reduction in diameter from both the top and the bottom of the stock, but the step down for the barrel band comes only from the underside of the stock; there is no reduction from the upper side.

Furthermore, after the step down for the upper barrel band the cleaning rod still touches the underside of the stock, but after the step down for the endcap it doesn't contact the stock any longer, as you can see in your own pic there's space visible between the cleaning rod and the underside of the tip of the stock.

Conclusion: the very tip of the stock which fits into the endcap has been removed, either broken or cut off (possibly combination of both).

Correct me if I'm wrong since I have never attempted this, but this seems like a good way to get ripped off. Stores won't take your offerings at a fair price because they need to resell it; you should sell to stores if you need money quickly and don't have time for a private sale.

How much would the M48 have cost you in cash?
