Really? Just got mine yesterday. It's aight. I just don't know what it's for exactly. Kind of too thick and heavy for EDC.

Right now my Benchmade 940-1 is my go to EDC knife.

Technically, basically all of them are "legitimate", but what you're probably referring to is what makers are part of the original league of smiths who started the whole thing. There's only one smith left who still makes the original higonomaki knives, and you can tell whether it's his work or not by the packaging. The "real" ones come in packaging like pic related with the beige and blue box with gold letters. To be honest though, it really doesn't matter who you buy it from as long as it's made in Japan.

Anybody have experience with the Condor Tomahawks? They look really nice, but I don't know if I wanna drop 80 Canuck monies on it.
>>
>>34734380
they have set screws, you shouldnt need a set screw,

They cost 80 because its a good head but i have a feeling they dont pay as much attention to the handle,

That being said, i would go for a cold steel riflemans hawk, cheap and decent

Also consider the CRKT offerings, I'm going to get one of their Wood Kangee.

Most production Tomahawks, with wooden handles, are going to need some work out of the box. Like reshaping the handle to fit the eye better so there is no need for a set screw and no wiggle.

Pic related not mine... just a dream.

They are certainly good starting points.. That's where I started. But there are higher end options, like Naniwa, I have a Chosera stone from them, and it is by far the best stone I have. I don't no how to describe it, but it's just feels better than all my Kings, Nortons, and even my Wicked Edge Diamonds.

Have you ever carried a fixedblade? I love folders, I own plenty of them and carry them most of the year... But when I can (legally), I carry a fixed blade. Something about them just inspires a level of confidence that a folder can't, and I say this as someone who owns many Cold Steel Tri-Adds.
>>
>>34730238

The more I play with my domino, the more I realize I don't like it.

It's too thick and heavy for normal EDC. There are too many hotspots on it for hard use, or anything tactical. In fact I find the ergonomics a huge miss compared to the PM2, which besides not being a flipper is better in many ways.

The spidy hole on the Domino especially is a huge disappointment. I tried to spidy open it and it cracked my fingernail. It's seriously sharp around it's edges!

What is the best choice of sharpening stone for you depends a lot on how much experience you have sharpening and what kind of finishing grit you are looking for (or if you don't know that off-hand, what kinds of work do you do with the knives you will be sharpening).
>>
>>34740079
>Chosera

As far as Japanese waterstones go, the Naniwa Chosera line is an excellent choice if you like hard, non-muddy stones that work well on low to medium carbide content steels (i.e. I wouldn't necessarily use on them on s30v and especially not anything with more Vanadium than s30v).

I've tried them and I personally really don't like them, but that's because I prefer soft extremely muddy waterstones that can deal with higher carbide steels, so I prefer Sigma Power Select II stones since they use silicon carbide for their abrasive and shed grit extremely easily even under low force (i.e. they are very very muddy).

With Japanese waterstones what kind of behavior you prefer from your stones makes a huge impact in which stones are good choices for you.

Has any body done saltwater etching on a blade then forced a patina. How did it look afterwards?

I usually etch my own symbol to mark my knives and tools as my own.

I got an opinel coming tomorrow. I plan on sticking it in a potato for a few days to get a dark, black looking patina. Will I still be able to see the etching, or am I wasting my time?

Get a Norton combo India stone and some food safe oil like mineral oil or butcher block oil etc

90% of sharpening is technique and practice so spending $100-300 for a set of stones isn't going to get you great edges if you don't know what you are doing

Japanese stones are all the rage now, and they do have many good qualities like their performance on certain steels or blade types but they also have drawbacks

You can find finer grades of Japanese stones but the Norton will give very, very sharp edges and if you need a higher level of refinement an inexpensive strop will get you there with ease

Mike Vellekamp has a new brand coming out soon, V Nives, with some very cool designs, this one is my favorite for the simple fact that the dude is actually naming it after me personally after I suggested some features while he was designing it on Facebook Live, not out yet but he is gonna send me number 0001 of 1k with a certificate and stuff, such a cool guy. Will definitely be the top of my collection. How many people can say they have a knife named after them without being in the industry?

I also finally got around to setting up the foam in my Pelican case last night, though my most commonly edc'd knives and fixed blades are staying out of it for now at least.
>>
>>34754434
Get something in the 40-100 dollar range then, Spyderco Tenacious or Sage serious, good all around knives that look nice but arent crazy expensive. Also invest in a good sharpening system and as long as you arent stabbing your knives into metal there aint much you can't fix. Broke the tip off a 240 dollar ZT a while back and fixed it last night with my Edge Pro Apex, has an even better tip than before and mirror polished edge now.

I find ZT to be the best in terms of quality vs.price compared to all the other knife manufacturers. I carried an 0456 for a good while and it was always a pleasure to use, and I've had experience with the 0452CF and 0900 as well.

The only problem I have with them is that they aren't the best at designing smaller knives. The 0900 was an attempt at doing so, but it's just so overbuilt that it defeats the purpose of being smaller anyway. For your purposes this won't be a problem, but make sure you get an idea as to how big the knife is before you buy it.

I second this, if you like heavily built knives that still have style ZT is best in price range in my opinion. >>
>>34772339
You can't engage in close combat with this dagger. No reach, no grip. Only good for what it was designed for: Getting close to someone and pulling him onto the blade by surprise.

>>34772778
The Hultafors classic series is made with the same technique, with the same steel from Ovaco by a company (Hults Bruks) being the oldest in the business.
And it is cheaper.
GB has a harder edge (can chip and break which is not supposed to happen with an axe) and the most beautiful design.
>>
>>34773440
I agree with what you say about the GB. I have the hunters axe and went bush with it. Had to remove a few small gum trees (roughly 5 inches thick). My GB went away from it with chips (about 1mm deep) all the way down the blade and a large 3mm chip near the middle. Don't get me wrong though, they are great axes BUT they are meant for softer Scandinavian woods.

The conditions are less than scientific, but most knives survive, so if he can break it, it isn't worth your dollaroos.

And the tests are pretty rigorous, so any knife that passes that is designed for your intended POU is worth it's salt/money.

>>
>>34791661
Most fillet knives are cheap and kind of shitty, companies mostly seem to care about their rust resistance more than edge holding. Rapala, Dexter Russell, victornox pick a well known brand

The main thing is being able to sharpen them and keep them sharp. This is one of the few places that pull through sharpeners work well enough, as long as you refine the edge with a steel/stone/ceramic steel or best of all a set of crock sticks for speed and ease

I disagree with you,
But you aren't exactly wrong.

No knife is ideal for close combat,
Its always just a backup.

But as far as any "combat knife" design goes, few designs scrap all utility to become a killing weapon like any modern combat dagger, the aforementioned Fairbairn Sykes knife being one early example that modern designs have only improved on with materials science.

>>

That's the answer I was expecting. Either that or "too expensive get a >Kershaw".

I really like Benchmade's reputation and quality but I'll be damned if I wouldn't just be buying a $100 tape cutter. I still want a mini Grip though because I think $100 of quality goes a lot farther than $50 of half the quality.

My other option is a Kershaw because it's mid-tier quality for a great price.

I'm sorry but I used mine for several years in the Swedish marines for camp bushcraft and it served me well. It's a great axe, but unless you have the spare cash the slight advantage isn't enough to warrant the price tag. Cheaper hatchets will do near enough the same thing for less than half the price.

It's awesome though. You can pass it on to your children.

A mini Grip is literally a $50 knife artificially made $100.

If you're going to get one, at least get a Doug Ritter mini Grip which has enough improvements to sort of justify the price increase.

The stock mini-grip is literally the same knife as it's been for years, just with a price hike.

The Doug Ritter mini-Grip has

>M390 steel
>higher grind making it better for slicing
>is discontinued and will probably appreciate in value as it gets harder to find

And it's only $20-30 more than a standard one, assuming you can find one.

Just reprofile the tip
>>
Need several recommendations.

First I'm looking for a medium size out the front knife for defensive carry. Firm budget cap of $100.

Second, I'm looking for a medium/large serrated folder for camping/bush craft. Doesn't need any spring assist or anything.
Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/CR6783DB-Crawford-Kasper-Folding-Knife/dp/B015YB4460/ref=pd_sim_200_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B015YB4460&pd_rd_r=150A58Y6H64PC6DJEBNN&pd_rd_w=8jaw2&pd_rd_wg=5fYoR&psc=1&refRID=150A58Y6H64PC6DJEBNN

Also looking for a large fixed blade combat/bushcraft knife. $60 budget.

Thanks!
>>
>>34803990
>>34804121
Ignore i misread your post entirely.
For fixed blades a mora is the best $15 you'll ever spend and will be fine for everything out doors. For a camping folder maybe get the rangerwood 55 or something. For a OTF check out the piranha pocket.
>>
>>34804142
The Mora looks solid, but I was hoping for something with serrations (sawing off knots on small branches), and more combat oriented. Looks good though regardless.

Rangerwood 55 doesn't really seem like what I was looking for. I already have a SOG Power Assist multi tool and a Leatherman Wave.

Really just wanted a large folder similar to the CRKT. Is the CRKT I linked good to go?

The Piranhas are way out of my price range. Like I said I'm looking for a sub $100.
I like the look of this benchmade, but it is obviously out of my price range:
http://www.bladeplay.com/item--Benchmade-Infidel-Double--4995

Definitely looking for a dagger.

Are Delta Forces knives legitimate or just chinkshit?

http://www.directknifesales.com/delta-force-black-d/a-otf-automatic-knife-satin-dagger.html

How about AKC?
>>
>>34804341
Reason i added the rangerwood was because it has a dedicated saw, which will be a lot better for sawing and you won't have to get a shitty half/half knife which is harder to sharpen and so on. I have a leatherman wave but i keep the victorinox as a camp knife because it has better smaller tools (i dont use pliers much when outside). This way you don't need serrations on either knife.

The pirahna pockets are only a few bucks out of your price range if you get the pocket P1. If you're not gonna find much else for under $100 besides chinkshit and most of them will have bad grips for self defense.
>>
>>34804707
Theres also not much use for an outdoor folder when you're outside.

>>
>>34804863
Why would anyone care if you're out doors, and if you go with the mora its the most unthreatening thing. Not trying to be a dick but just trying to get you the best advice, the rangerwood has a locking saw and the mora is good enough for most tasks.

AFAIK there's not much in the sub-$100 OTF market that isn't chinkshit. Best case scenario is probably that you find a decent Microtech clone on DHgate or Alibaba.

I broke the tip of my CS Voyager XL being a dumbass and throwing it around (probably hit a rock in the dirt). Also the bevels came very asymmetrical, one side is 20° the other probably 24°ish but this can be fixed. Makes a good edc knife otherwise but I'd carry a smaller knife for smaller tasks so you don't scare people with you pocket machete. The spyderco is a knock-off but made an excellent edc blade.
