Let's talk and post about obsolete but hella fun and aesthetic lever guns /k/

Been really interesting in the Winchester 1887 lately, Dominion Arms sells both full stock and pistol grip versions for about $400 but what are some other options I might want to look into?
>>

Most their shit is good but I've heard mixed results about their 1887

That being said, Dominion Arms is basically unknown to most so it's also a gamble, but it's also less than half the price of a chiappa for what is basically just a range toy.

I mean, would anyone in this day and age genuinely take an 1887 innawoods?

Heres my lever action shotgun,
bought it for $300 new
Ejector jams like crazy but I think its because of the general design and modern shells
Its a chinese reproduction but its been a fun gun.

I'm guessing Dominion Arms, does that mean you're a fellow Canadabro?
Any issues I should know about with the Dominion guns? I'm not expecting it to survive SHTF but I don't want something that's going to need replacement parts after every range trip.

Its a Century Arms import here in the states, maybe Dominion is a Canadian counterpart for the same manufacturer? Not sure. Anyway, Its a decent gun, the screws all needed tightening when I first got it home. it seems to hate Winchester shells. Federal is good but it still jams occasionally when ejecting. Oiling and breaking it in was necessary to reduce ejecting and loading jams but it seems alright. I would NOT let my life depend on this gun, but its a fun inexpensive momento that is holding together pretty well.

Its mechanically fascinating honestly, like something out of a steam punk fantasy with how all the internals look.
>>
>>34725108
I considered one of those CAI import levergats, they are supposedly notoriously bad which is why I skipped out on them. Anecdotes and all, but your experiences are shared by many so in a sense the gun works exactly on par with the rest.
>>
>>34725108
I've heard Dominion is basically just a different name for Norinco, or maybe just an importer for Norinco, not sure which but I know it's basically just Norinco.

>I would NOT let my life depend on this gun
I got plenty of way more practical HD guns so that's not an issue, sometimes you just want a gun purely for fun
>>
>>34724540
Do levers just suck? Why is every lever gun I've seen in here talked about as dogshit or costs almost 10k or both?
>>
>>34725198
The problem is no one really makes good lever guns anymore, they're obsolete which means not a whole lot of companies invest the time and effort into making good ones, pre-64 Winchester are great guns that were affordable when they were common, same with early Marlins, Henry's are still of decent quality but a lot of people hate the load tube design.
>>
>>34725128
Its such a good clone, they cloned all the faults the original 1887/9's had too
Modern shells with their crimped ends will sometimes snag on the breach and cycling the rounds too quickly will cause it to not even move a new shell to the chamber. These take a finese almost to operate.

>>34725151
And a fun gun it is once you break it in
>>
>>34725198
Because it's a board full of nogunz and shitposters. There are plenty of good leverguns in the sub $1000 area but they're all inherently antiquated designs that don't always come up to par with the modern guns that replaced them. Functionally though they are very complex with a lot of moving parts, compare an antique mechanical watch to a modern digital one you bought for a dollar at Walmart. There's a lot of labor that goes into them so you get a lot of cheap crappy ones and a lot of premium expensive ones, but the secret is to get the ones inbetween.

What do guys think of Henry.

Does anyone have experience with them.

I'm thinking about getting one of their rifles in 30-30.
>>
Is Marlin's QC still a crapshoot? Their leverguns are almost always on sale near me.
>>
>>34726231
Holosights just look retarded on lever guns, I'd go with a shorter rail and a low magnification scope.
>>
>>34726315
Outside of their loading gate I never hear any complaints about them, they seem to be fairly good quality guns.
Personally I'd love to get their .44 magnum mares leg and put a full stock on it, seems like it would be a good trail gun.
>>
>>34725108
What length of shells are you using?

If its jamming, you're probably using 2 3/4.

It was designed to use 2 1/2.

Switch over, take it apart, oil and polish the ever loving SHIT out of the inside, if not, oil the everliving hell out of it and run 300 shells through it. One after another.

Best method to break it in besides constantly dry firing, but the heat, cycling and what not of actually shooting it helps breaking it in immensely.
>>
>>34724540
>>34724836

To anyone wondering about the Dominion Arms 1887's specifically, I can offer my experience.

My 1887 from them is my favourite gun in my collection, bar none. The one that I have works about 95%, it still has the rare failure to feed or eject but bearing in mind we asked the Chinese to make a working 1887. What I love about it is the sheer uniqueness of it, the action is very fun and different to manipulate. I find the pistol grip a bit awkward to use so I just use the full stock, although if you really like the Terminator set up it works well enough. I've actually found with the 17.5 inch barrel it's very handy in the woods, so I've spent hours and hours out there with it, I think they make fine innawoods guns with a bit of practice in operating it. If you have any specific questions about it just ask, I've had mine for about 3-4 years now. I'd recommend them to anyone interested in them.
>>
>>34726842
How strong is the action? Can you theoretically shoot everything from bird shot to short shells to magnum buck or is it very picky about what you shoot out of it?

Personally I'd go with the full stock if I ever decided to take the plunge, not as iconic but I like the ability to shoulder my guns (plus I think Canadaammo sells the full stock version with the pistol grip included on the side).
>>
>>34726142
This. Had mine apart last night, spent the entire time wishing I had a Marlin.

BUT: it's a pre-64 that cost me zero dollars, got it from Dad who got it from the family of an old guy who used to headshot durrs with it until he died, so I'll deal with all the fiddly bits.
>>
>>34726993
Through my use of it, I've come to believe it uses a strong action. We are talking a JMB design so that's typically pretty par for the course. As far as what it uses, the DA ones are specifically made for 2 3/4'' only, 3" will not work because in order to accomplish that the reciever would have to be made longer/larger as an original design limitation. I've used everything from high brass slugs, 00 Buck, and birdshot from multiple companies and it seems to have no real trouble with anything specifically, it even worked with Russian shells that didn't work in my Maverick because of their weird ass crimp. Through shooting high brass slugs and 00 Buck nothing's ever showed any bad wear or give, it didn't hurt it at all. I've never tried minishells like the Aguila ones but I have reason to believe they wouldn't work worth a shit, as the lifter likely needs a fullish fit not to fuck up the chambering. But I don't know for sure.

I find the full stock a lot better for helping with leverage when wracking it, in order to work properly you can't work the action gingerly, you have to throw it forward with some good, measured force. After shooting with it a lot I've found the way I like operating it and I can go pretty fast now. I also prefer the old cowboy feeling the full stock gives. Sadly, I haven't seen CanadaAmmo offer the package for at least a year and a half, but I got mine from them, the same package you're talking about.
>>
>lever action

fuck off fudds, go use your obsolete crap elsewhere. my AR is 100x better than your crap
>>
>>34727403
Cool, might pick one up when I have a little more disposable income.

Lever guns are fun for the action, shotguns are fun for all the different kinds of shit you can feed them, $400 for mixing the two together just feels rights.

I have one, its much much bicer than marlin even adjusting for the price difference since the street prices on the two only vary about 100$, they all come drilled for a scope mount of sight mount.

The only complaint ive ever had is the tube loader, but ive never had to speed load the damn thing, and even if i did, you can always just load single shots into the ejection port like a shotgun.

Also henry criminally under represents the tube capacities, the 4570 is always advertised as holding 4, but as you can see in pic related i can fit 6 in the tube and one in the chamber.
>>
>>34724591
>Not getting the 9 shot model, loading them full of Trail Boss, and blasting all damn day
>>
>>34727403
One more question actually, does the 7 round trick work well or does it cause feeding issues?

By 7 round trick I mean loading five shells into the tube, putting one on the lifter, putting one in the chamber, and carefully closing it.

Your confusing your bullshit romantic notions for actually usefulness. For reference, a Mosin 91/30 (A gun widely recognized as being too long, too heavy, and too unwieldy) is only 4 inches longer and a half a pound heavier than your stupid fantasies.

In fact the carbine mosin is a pound lighter, and 4 inches shorter, and people still call that a pice of junk for being too heavy and too long for what it is.

Go hold a gun retard.

>>
>>34729728
Were they full sized ones or the gay mares leg ones with the short stocks? The length of pull on my henry is only an inch or 2 less than on my ar.
>>
>>34727607
I would suggest it, I tend to like mine for the same reasons you mentioned. If by chance you can't get your hand on an 1887, I have heard the other Turk lever shotguns are fine with a less convoluted loading system. I've never tried one though.

>>34727959
Interestingly, yes, the seven shot method works very well in my experience. However, I tried loading six in order to keep my bore empty to wrack in a shell when I needed it, but that didn't seem to work very well at all, it would always try to grab the next round out of the tube and mess it up. So I would say either load up five, close, and wrack when ready to shoot, or load up to seven if you're good with having your bore full. I have to admit that having seven rounds in a shotgun with a 17.5'' barrel is pretty satisfying.
>>
>>34729744
One was a Henry with a mare's leg (can't remember which one specifically), the other was a Marlin 1894 with full stock, which worked fine for a while then seemed to consistently be ejecting a bit short and back. I was probably still safe with it, but the girth of my nose is only matched by the gape of my vagina.

Henry kicks ass. I've had a .44 and .45-70 and still have a .22 and a .357. All are/were fantastic rifles. I also had a Marlin .30-30 and a Win 94. In all honesty, with bigger rounds like the .30-30 and the .45-70, the loading tube is actually faster to reload than a loading gate once you get used to it. Pistol calibers are a little trickier because the rounds are smaller,

>I've heard Dominion is basically just a different name for Norinco, or maybe just an importer for Norinco, not sure which but I know it's basically just Norinco.

I heard they were some forum community who linked up with a Chinese manufacturer for custom work?
In particular they noticed that Canadian law allows for short shotguns as long as they're produced short in the factory rather than sawn-off afterwards, so they commissioned a run of 8" 870 knockoffs and kept rolling from there.

No doubt the factory is a Norinco subsidiary or affiliate of some sort, but I don't think they'd need to sneak their guns into the maple sugarbushes under another name when Norinco guns are sold alongside Dominion in Canuck gunshops.
