Hi, total newfag to rifles here, I only own handguns and want an ar, apparently it's the best bang for my buck.

I want something budget but not something like a DPMS or a M&P sport. It would mostly be for HD and muh shtf and range use.

Should I build? I would just want something with a rail for a light, extended charging hangle, iron sights (maybe upgrade to a cheap optic later) and maybe a sling. I don't know shit about gas lengths or twist rates, or barrels. What is the best for beginners? I want something short and maneuverable because i'm a skinnyfat dyel manlet.

Also how does the AR charging handle thing work? I seriously don't get it, I see there is a "bolt release" on the side that you just smack instead of pulling the handle back, on a reload so what's even the point of using the handle? Why would your bolt ever not be back, even if you're only chambering the first fresh mag before shooting? Do you "de-cock" it for some reason?

I know AK's you just pull the handle back to charge your first round and then it holds open and you just pull it back again and it slams foreward just like a pistol. Is the bolt release on an AR the same as a slide release on a handgun? What would the advantages to using the slide release instead of the charging handle be?

Come on now.

Charging handle is for loading and empty chamber when the bolt is forward because you've been storing it or not shooting it. Bolt release is for loading an empty chamber when putting in a fresh mag during shooting. I store my AR with bolt forward. Also you can't check the chamber with the bolt release, you need to actually be able to pull the BCG (bolt carrier group) back.

If you're into cheap optics consider the Holosun Paralow ACSS. About $200, good battery life and decent durability. Civilian optic for sure though. Has a neat reticule.

Is their any reason to use plastic magazines when aluminum mags are as light and are much cheaper?

Is there a reason you want an extended charging handle which precludes the purchase of an M&P Sport, DPMS, Anderson, or other budget complete rifle? There are free float handguards which can be installed without removing the barrel or gas block, such as from Samson, Apex and Troy.

16" barrel and midlength gas will be good for you. 16" so you don't have to worry about permanently attached muzzle devices, midlength for smoothness.

Charging handle is used to draw the bolt carrier group to the rear. You would do this if you wanted to inspect an empty chamber, chamber a new round, clear an obstruction, eject an un-shot cartridge from the chamber or any number of other reasons. It is separate from the bolt catch, which only works in conjunction with the charging handle.

You would use the bolt release instead of the charging handle in order to release the already-locked-back bolt carrier group with a quick press of a button near where your loading hand already is, rather than reach back to your shoulder and draw the charging handle to the rear. It's a smaller, faster movement, but you could use just the charging handle for that purpose.

If you are comfortable with tools unlike the typical millennial, then with a very small number of tools costing somewhere less than $60 total, you could have every tool you would need to build an AR from single components yourself. If you already have some tools, it would cost even less.

here in Washington state they also charge you sales tax on the price of the firearm being transferred when you pick it up at your FFL, so its more expensive to by complete lowers here than to just transfer a stripped one and build it from there. luckily i have a cheap FFL nearby that only charges $15 to transfer rifles (handguns are more expensive due to another state-level complication) so at least theres that.

speaking of PSA i just got another upper from them today that i bought at the beginning of their 4th of july sale. i already had the mid length upper with the quad rail but its awkwardly heavy at times so i wanted another more traditional one that is more comfortable to shoot and has the option of iron sights. $200 for a nice milspec upper with comfy magpul fore-end and MBUIS isnt too bad, just have to swap out the BCG every time i change uppers. planning on getting a cheap Vortex Sparc for it at some point and maybe a smaller stock to fit the lighter weight configuration.

Get a Magpul MLOK SL handguard and MBUS. I recommend the SL stock and grip too, it really changes the feel of the rifle, makes it feel more "modern" and it doesn't cost much.

For light you should get a Streamlight Pro Tac Rail Mount 1 with Arisaka MLOK Scout mount.

BCM charging handle with the medium latch is the best bang for the buck.

The bolt carrier group chambers a round just like a pistol except the slide goes into the buffer tube which is hidden inside the stock. The charging handle grabs this carrier group from the top and pulls it all back so it can chamber a round. Everything after that is the rifle vomiting on itself to cycle another round.

Think of it as pulling back the slide on a pistol by welding a handle on the top of it and having the entirely of the slide disappear in a prearranged cardboard tube.

All in the diet. I was lifting hard and eating hard for 2 years straight and I didn't even look that good. Recently dropped from 220lbs to 195 and I'm getting all the mires, just like /fit/ says you will. 2250-2500 calories per day, only moderate drinking every other weekend. 5 eggs, 2 pieces toast, turkey sausage for breakfast, day in and day out. Chicken of some sort (teriyaki, panko, plain seasoned), broccoli, and quinoa for dinner. Beef jerkey snacks for lunch. Eating simply makes staying on calorie target much easier. Only really change it up when eating out. Don't eat out too much, maybe every other week just like drinking, and keep portions small. Supplement with whey protein shakes (50 grams of powder per day, keep it under 300 calories).

5x5 is great for building strength, but the classic guys knew what they were doing. Volume builds volume. 6 sets 10 reps for primary lift, 3x10 for secondary lifts, 3-6 lifts(exercises) per muscle group, one muscle group per session, 3-5 sessions per week or as how your body recovers and scheduling allows. Little cardio (I box, kick the bag, and swim), run some 5ks if you can but watch the knees.

I did a lot of 5x5 in high school, and of course trained it when I was doing powerlifting. Fuck all that noise though man. Being light is nice. It is all in the diet.

Stick to 5x5 then, and maintain a reasonable surplus. Don't get fat, and don't bulk for too long.
Big heavy weights can hurt you, and realize that the upper end of power lifting is primarily genetic. I hit the 1000lb club then turned back. Was getting injured all over. No reason to keep pushing it past a 430lb deadlift, 330lb squat, and 275lb bench. Those are verified competition pause rep numbers, but they're actually absolute shit for my bodyweight. High rep low weight touch and go is safer on the joints and muscles.

5x5 is great for beginner and intermediate lifter strength gains, but know when to dial it back, unless you turn out to be genetically a power lifter, which is totally a possibility.

Thanks. that's one of my favorite shots. I've moved states since and don't have anywhere nearly as aesthetic to LARP, at least at the moment.

I'll keep all that in mind, I'm definitely a beginner, maybe one who's just under the line of intermediate. If I can hit 500lbs in the deadlift and corresponding numbers in the rest of the big three I think I'll be happy. Maybe 600lbs.
