Repost

An AK builder is going to let me rummage around in his "spare parts and bits/bobs" box to even out a trade we're doing.

I've never built shit in my life, anything in particular I should look for that would be useful to the average pleb?

Not looking for building tools or anything.
What are some easily identifiable things I could grab that it would be good to have as backup parts for my SAR and WASR?

So I was planning on putting a US palm grip onto it, but it seems they've been out of production for a few years. What's the next most A E S T H E T I C AK grip a guy could purchase?

Also, I decided to go with a fixed stock M4 adapter instead of folding. I've had a folding stock before and never used it.

It sits like a half inch offset to the left and has a much larger field of view than the Obzor, however it has a teeny tiny amount of zoom (like maybe 1.1x if even that) that makes shooting with both eyes open a little goofy as the difference in zoom is so slight that my eyes are working overtime to focus. Both eyes open makes my left eye a little blurry, not sure if that's something I'll get used to or not. That's something that the Obzor does not have, however the Rakurs' glass is clear instead of purple (which the Obzor's purple doesn't bug me at all but some people don't like it)

The reticle is a nice German post and is much bigger than the Obzor's reticle. The Rakurs also sits lower than the Obzor on the rifle. It's still a chin weld but not as much of a chin weld. The tritium on this one is still nice and bright too, since I bought it used I have no idea when it was manufactured so I'm not sure how long into the ~10 year lifespan of the tritium the optic is at

Sure, it's not the 15 cents per round 5.45 we had a couple years ago, but it's still the equivalent of 5.56 at 2/3 the price.

If you're scared of a Russian import ban that's not going to happen unless we go to war with them.

Still a very good deal for what it is.

7n6 uses an unhardened steel penetrator. They changed this in the late 80s and have come out with three different improved projectiles since.

Furthermore, pretty much every commercial 60gr 5.45 loading tumbles reliably, as does GT.

As some who just zenitfagged his slr104, it's a lot of work but not too difficult.
Go slow and check often. You have to take out a lot of material in block that lock in the trunnion, I chose to take the material off the top so that the bottom fits square. I also had to take off material from my handguard retention plate, and the block that locks into the plate.
Also it seems like the aluminum they used is softer and the finish isnt as durable as american made mil spec rails.
Looks cool as fuck though. Just saving for one of these

There may be different specs on the Slrs? I tried the drunken Russian with a hammer method, there's no way it would have fit. That shit would have been like Shorty Mac on a 5 year old. I probably took at least a quarter inch of material off and still had to hammer it in.
And my only problem is, when I get a Perst, all my AR's will get incredible penis envy that they don't also get uncucked IR devices.

I'd get the proper pin punch, remove that pin and replace it. Beating a mushroomed pin into a hole is begging to get it stuck.

If your new pin doesn't fit, you can chuck it in an electric drill then polish it down (do the whole length) with emery cloth or even sand paper.

You can use nylon strapping tape as backing to turn any sandpaper you have into a tough polishing strip.

I buy reamers online as needed, but rather than fucking with the parts it's much easier to polish the pin.

Grease won't cure the mushroomed pin. Use a new straight pin or remove the mushroom. Resist the urge to nigger the job.

Having said that, all of you guys talking about getting kits built made me really want to buy a few myself, so now I have that to look forward to.

True wisdom. I was planning on trying to turn down the pin once I got it out. I used the cut off end of the broken punch with some vise grips to knock it back out. I ended up using a different pin rather than that mushroomed one and evidently the other pin was a smaller diameter and it went in a lot easier. I have used the cordless drill lathe method before with good results.

Correction to this, i was wrong about its zoom. It appears to have a slight negative zoom, things are ever so slightly smaller/farther away when looking through it, like maybe 0.9x or 0.95x. Not enough to be that big of a deal but enough to confuse your brain when shooting with both eyes open

Also someone please buy that $250 PK-AS on the files, that's a really good price and I really want it but I need to get my kit built and can't afford to keep dropping ~$300 on optics. Plus I've only got one gun with a side rail so I can't even use more than one at a time

get the wasr.

Don't bother with yugos unless you can find an opap. The wasr will take most akm furniture and has a bayo lug and a chrome lined barrel.

You can make a pap look okay, but it's more trouble than its worth.

Here's a pic of my old opap with a manticore arms triangle stock, Stormwerkz side folding hinge, and an adaptor block that I can't remember who made, but it wasn't Ace.

It's an M21 rail.
Closest match is the SVD rail, but I believe there is a slight difference.
I just went with a RS Regulate 307 mount but there are some other options out there for a more combloc look.

Even the cheapest underloaded commercial 5.45 tumbles reliably, and does so more quickly in soft tissue than 5.56 yaws, fragments, or expands if you're shooting SP or HP.

>>
>>34406354
Duh didn't you know the BR in BR7.62 stands for Blown Receiver??

If you get one of those kits you're looking at $650 for the kit, $250 for the barrel, ~$750-$1000 in build costs, and depending on your receiver anywhere from like $100-$200 (if you're going to have one of these kits built you might as well go all out on the receiver and have a proper clone build). You're gonna be spending about $500 more on the kit build than you would on a used SGL

You'd be better off with an SGL if you're not wanting a clone build, or even better just convert a Saiga if you want the cheapest
>>
>>34406379

I was the guy asking about building. I admit I'm just beginning to learn what all this entails. Do you not need to weld the rails if you use a press and flat?
>>
>>34406447
Or if you really want a kit build instead of a complete rifle for whatever reason and don't care about much Russian you can find Bulgarian 74 kits for fairly cheap and build costs on those would only be like $400ish
>>
>>34406447
The build costs won't be nearly that high if you get somebody to do the regular method of just drilling the dimples out and welding them back up
>>
>>34406493
True but from what I've read it'll still be $100 to $200 more than just normal pinned components

But again it all comes back to if you're wanting to have one of these $650 kits built why not go all the way and have it built correctly? If you're not gonna want to do it correctly just get a cheaper Bulgarian kit and save money

ДTК-3 came in today, looking forward to seeing how the ДTК-1's bigger brother fares at the range tomorrow.

The fucker weighs 7.9oz, so if nothing else then the weight will mitigate recoil.

You can cause something to happen and mushrooming can occur without user error.

I refuse.

>>34407753
According to google translate, Rakurs (Paкypc) translates to foreshortening or angle. Obzor (Oбзop) translates to overview and Kashtan (Кaштaн) translates to chestnut. It's kind of funny how Rakurs and Obzor translate to things relating to eyes and scopes, but Kashtan is chestnut.

Using a romanian trigger will prevent mushrooming on your bolt carrier.
People say mushrooming is either caused by the hammer being harder than the bolt carrier, or the geometry of the trigger being all fucked up.
I don't know which one is true, but you can solve both potential issues with a surplus hammer connected to your rifle's country.

Exactly and mean while I will shoot the 105clone until I find another rifle I want more. I don't get safe queen rifles. A friend has a $4,000 MK18 build and he shoots it and treats it like a rifle, no babying or being afraid or cosmetic damage.

I need to pick up the other screw attachment. It did not come with unfortunately. But yes the plan is to throw my T-1 and 3x onto the 105clone. RS Regulate side rail with full picatinny attachment to house them.

I turned the riser around to allow proper viewing of the irons.

Alright /akg/, got some questions for y'all. I just got a set of new Bakelite furniture, and I don't want to put it on either of my two current AKs, a WASR with perfect red wood and an Arsenal SLR-107FR.

Should I get a Draco or similar AK pistol to SBR, and if so which one, or should I just wait and focus on getting a VERP 12 before they're all expensive as fuck? Or, dumbest option, could I get one of those Chiappa/Charles Daly AK-9s and SBR it with regular AK furniture?
>>
>>34408257
>>34408342
I had no idea about that, now I really want one. I don't even have an RS mount or any western optics for my AK, but being able to close the stock while using the side rail would be awesome

Another thing you may notice... for AK reloads I like to pull the rifle back and tuck the stock under my arm. The PT-1 is so nice and thin, you can really pinch it in there and manage any front-heaviness rather easily. That's probably less of an issue for a 104/105, although I'm sure your full-length rails adds some weight up front.

Without the riser the cheekweld is perfect for irons and cowitnessed red dots, but little rubber strip that goes in place of the riser is kinda flimsy.
>>
vzbro, if you're in here did you buy your vz with the side rail or did you have it installed? I'm thinking about adding one to mine because I don't have any side rails on any of my 7.62x39 guns and I like my vz the most. If I do though I'd have to source one of those fancy shell deflectors or have one made or something which will be a pain

I had mine installed after I'd bought it. I had a local smith put it on, but it was some oddball tap he needed to match the screw that came with it. He said it was super easy other than that.
Finding a shell deflector is the biggest pain in the arse about it, and you have to grind a little bit off the mount half of the scope to make it fit between the actual scope and mount.

You can kindof see here that the deflector goes between the two pieces of the scope so it's held on by the scope screws.
That's why a little bit of filing is involved.

>Is a vepr 12 drum worth the $90 for the meme?
Sure.
They're fun, but don't hold any ideas about them being very rugged.
If you drop it on hard ground, it will break off a tab or 2 on the rear cover.
It's not detrimental to function, but it is a poor choice in design.

Also note that some 2 3/4 shells will not feed depending on the crimp used.
There's a tiny ledge right under the feed tower that causes them to hang up.
I've thought about rounding it off with a file to get it to work with any crimp, but I've been lazy.
>>
>>34408819
From the earlier pictures I would venture to guess Russian or Bulgarian because of the silver stamp up front, and because the buttplate is held in by flathead screws.
>>
>>34408819

They just seem ungodly huge. Isn't there a 20rd drum? Could a saiga drum be modified to work? I know saiga stick mags can.
So far the only mags I'll have are the Molot 5rd, two CSSPEC 10rds, and the SGM 12 round.
>>
>>34407529
There is literally nothing in common with these two mounting systems but the fact that they both have some degrees of modularity.
>>
>>34408905
>They just seem ungodly huge.

>Isn't there a 20rd drum?

It's ~$600.
>Could a saiga drum be modified to work? I know saiga stick mags can.
I don't think so, and I'm pretty sure Saiga mags can't be made to work in a Vepr unless you remove the magwell.
Vepr 12 mags can work in a Saiga though if it's got the magwell (Saiga 12 030)
>>
>>34409013
I've seen people cut the mag catch off the saiga mags and make them work. At least some specific brand of stick mag. BHO wont work.

>$600

Yeah the stock it really a wonderful and highly adjustable platform and I am digging it thus far. Have you tried reversing the cheek riser?

It allows for perfect irons use also, not able to try red dot co-witness but It looks like it would be also.
>>
>>34409062
I just ditched it to save weight, the rifle it's on >>34408083 is plenty heavy as it is. I hope to get my hands on an 1P87 soon, in which case I will probably put the riser on again.
>>
>>34409094
Cheers I find the rifle to be lighter than I would have initially expected. I may ditch the full rail system in time, especially if I just use the RS combo. No need for extra rail weight.
