For the people in the last thread talking about FIME vs legion SGLs, I had forgotten that Legion imported the 2011 SGLs. It's the 2009 ones that have all engraved receiver markings, except for the selector markings which are dot matrix.

Thanks, fampai. I've had my AK in a pseudo-old-school setup for like a year now and I've decided that rifle is fine, but it could be finer.

Slowly gonna start tacticooling up. Got any parts recommendations? Weight is a non-issue, my other gun is a FAL.

I didn't notice the SGLs had a slight mismatch of color on the top cover and receiver depending on the lighting until just now. I noticed '83 Izzy build is the same way, but that's because only the receiver actually got refinished; everything else is the original arsenal paint. Might just be a texture difference between the receiver and cover and the way they reflect light.

Ah yes, the Fuller Rear Sight Mod (TM), championed by none other than the legend himself, Jim Fuller. To think that the Russians made millions of AK rifles and never once thought, "maybe we should make the rear notch bigger?" Truly speaks volumes to the brilliant, revolutionary mind of our Jim.

Was yours >>34389035 too? That one makes it really noticeable, kinda like how mine is in indirect lighting sometimes.

Like I said, might be a texture and light reflection thing. Kinda wish I had been able to get a full Russian paint job on my build, but I had sent the kit out a full 2-3 months before the big batches of Russian paint that Chimps and True Black are using on their builds became available.

Okay, I just bought my first russian-type optic and I'm confused as hell.

There's this little metal tab (blue circle) that prevents the arm (pink) from fully closing flush. Only way I can see this working is to take the arm off, tuck the tab behind the mount, then reattach the arm.

Is the idea that you do that if you want to "permanently" leave the optic on the rifle? If the arm closes most of the way will it be accurate at all?

My SLR 107FR. I really love the way it's set up but kinda worried about the optic getting damaged with excessive heat from the ultimak. It's a PA advanced. When I go to the range it always gets to the point where it is to hot to touch, but has never giving me issues whatsoever and has been on for almost 2 1/2 years now. Would it be wise to switch over to a RS regulate mount, or would you guys leave it on the ultimak? I really don't transport or carry around the rifle folded but it is a nice perk to have. Opinions?

My family came from Alsace-Lorraine right before the civil war started. My great great great grandfather evidently hid at the bottom of a well when the draft people were outside his house coming to collect him and his toddler daughter ratted him out inadvertently.

My grandfather was in the Navy during WW2 and was in Japan right after the war on leave. He wandered onto a ship that ended up being some kind of prison and when he got confronted by some guards, he ended up pulling his empty 1911 out and got the fuck out of there

Chimps, are these two different versions of Russian smooth top covers or are they the same? There are minor variations in each but not enough for me to figure out if they're different enough to really be different. If so, what eras are they about from and which is more uncommon? Both are from SGLs.

I mean, it feels like the aesthetic for an AK-74 is almost there but not quite. Like, if there was a version of the Zhukov stock that was left side folding, same over all length and foot look, was a bit skinnier, and used a 4.5mm AKS-74 hinge. As for the handguard, the fact that you have to cut off the handguard retainer is full retard and is the one thing that prevents me from just buying some of this shit to piss off /akg/

Nice, iirc you got a smoking deal

Obviously you already know about Yeaman, the only other guy I know that does rewelds commercially is BR7.62 on Theakforum.

By the way we're having a western NC meetup on the weekend of the 15th, it'd be a hike for you to make it but we'd love to have you. gqburner@gmail to get in touch with the organizer.

Also that goes out to you, strange tub anon, or anybody else who can make it and isn't a minor or noguns.
>>
>>34392274
Br762 was my first choice (he refinishes his work) but he is not responding to my emails.......so I guess I'll go with Matt. I have 2 other rewelds by him and both are excellent.

I'll be in Japan the 15th but I may actually get up the balls this fall to have a shoot. I have a 400m range on a private farm where I shoot. I'm going to save your email and touch back with you later.

>>34392420
I'd like to go one day too, but to see the shrines and temples and shit, I watch anime and read a little manga but I wouldn't want to go to akihabara to buy a bunch of anime merch or anything.

Our meets are pretty low key, very manageable groups of people, less than 10 people practically guaranteed, and 10 people would be pretty crazy. People say they're coming but end up having other commitments. I've been to a nuggetfest and something similar but I prefer the small crowd.

>>34392473
Yeah nobody has any problem with that, just as long as there are no gibsmedats who want something for nothing, if you want to shoot someone else's ammo then you should be able to compensate with ammo of your own for one of your guns in exchange, or with money but nobody has ever done that. Or unless it's someone like Giddy who is very generous and will let you shoot his ammo without expecting anything in return. I am happy to let people shoot my guns without asking anything in return to a certain extent, but I'm not made of ammo.

>>34392547

>>
>>34392707
>>34392473
Also if someone has their own ammo in the right caliber I don't care how many rounds you put through my guns. You can set my krink handguards on fire if it's your (factory) ammo. That doesn't hold for everyone, as some people will have guns that they want to preserve the value of. But generally speaking, for example, if you know there's going to be a 5.45 AK at the meetup, and you want to shoot it, go ahead and stock up on 5.45 even if you don't have a 5.45 rifle yourself. It simplifies things.

True Black anon, what's the mold number on your Izzy shiny plum pistol grip? I found out today that bakelite grips aren't correct for AKS-74s (an oversight on my part), and if you're not keeping it with your kit and it's the correct mold number (looking for Izzy mold 1/2), I might have a home for it.

For what it's worth, AK Forum's pistol grip guide says '88 kits are correct with matte plum, though shiny plums popped up on occasion too. It links this Russian resource site too that backs it up: http://www.ak-info.ru/joomla/index.php/devices/26-anything/132-rusakgrips

I'm having a smidge of a dilemma recently. You see, I bought a Saiga sporter as my first rifle in hopes of making it into what I wanted, at the time it made sense but now I see that it would cost more money to get it how I want it than it would cost to just buy something that I want already. I've already done the rear end conversion and got a gas tube and bracket for handguards but I plan on getting the whole front end done soon.

I've already sunk about $900 into it and I'd be looking at spending another $300 at least to get something similar to >>34389907
I'm seeing all these rifles on the files for just a little more than I put into mine and they're just how I want them (minus the furniture but I've got spares that I could put on) and I get the feeling of regret. Not that I bought the Saiga, but that I bought it with the intention of sinking more money into it when I could have just saved and bought what I wanted in the first place.

I don't have the space or desire for two AKs at the moment, so I would sell my Saiga and use that money to put towards one set up like I want.
Should I sell and buy up or keep it and put more money into it than I can ever get out of it? Can anyone whose sold their first gun weigh in here? I feel that I would regret it but right now I'm regretting buying it for the reasons I did.

>>
>>34394621
Yep, bakelite grips weren't considered strong enough to suffer the potential impact of being dropped on, AKMS rifles had wooden pistol grips instead of bakelite for this reason

The shiny grip that came with his kit would be a step in the right direction but it's not exactly appropriate. The type of polyamide used for the AKS-74 before the total adoption of plum furniture is a slightly different mix. It's more pale and flecked in appearance. A Tula plum pistol grip would actually look the most correct from a distance but the - in the mold number would reveal that it is Tula.

Yes. The hinge pin appears to have been installed by Arsenal, not by Molot. The stock also swings pretty loose compared to my trunnion. I'm hoping the pin comes out easily.

The only thing that really bugs me is that I'm losing 2 serialized parts by removing the stock. When I was first planning this project I actually considered asking Kvar if they could find a Vepr with a serial number that matched my trunnion. But I didn't get that chance. I was lucky to get one of these at all.

By no small margin it is the highest quality AK I've ever handled. I understand why people rave over Veprs now.

I noticed that on my fime group 308 too. My molot installed rpk and vepr12 need to be pulled a lot harder.
On a side-note, I'm not really a fan of the tube folders on anything shorter than my rifle. I think the club foot folders look 1000x better on 16in guns.
On another side note, I'm really aching to get one of those 6.5 grendel vepr sporter rifles. I think that caliber is neat and the value can only go up from here. And I'm not holding my breath for sanctions to get lifted.

Looks kosher to me. Pale might have been the wrong word. Any Izzy plum grip with the mold number on the left side like that is close enough. The second digit in the mold number signifies which branch of the mold tree it came off of. So 1/1 and 1/2 came from the same mold tree, just different branches. Any shiny plum grip with 1/X on the left side is good.
>>
>>34397131
>There's money to be made.

Not as much as you think. If Americans built an ak similar to the Bulgarian slr series rifles it would cost at least twice as much, they'd produce 1/4th as many of them, and the company would be bought up by freedom group within a year.

Only PITA is that little nick in the receiver but it can be filled with weld. It appears that these tube folders may be equipped to accept one of those safety mechanisms that prevents firing from the folded position.

I think the "M" on my takeoff trunnion may be short for MMG which is another reason why I was hesitant to use this trunnion. It may not have been made to the same specs or treated to the same hardness as a trunnion meant for an actual rifle.

AKs pretty much replaced milsurp in my collection and I doubt I'll ever have as many AKs as I did milsurp before I sold my milsurp, but AKs fill that same role while also being more interesting to me and being both more fun and cheaper to shoot

I don't really "collect" guns anymore, I just kind of collect AK related stuff that I find interesting and have other guns to do other things with

Welcome to my world, because that's what happened.

Apparently the shipping FFL swapped packing slips on accident, so my rifle is in another state and the FFL that currently has it isn't communicating with anybody else.

So is this a Norico and is it worth $500?
>>
>>34398377
There's a pretty good condition "letter" Chinese SKS for sale on AKfiles for 325 or 350
>>
>>34398377
I wouldn't say it's worth $500. Maybe $350 or $400. You can buy decent quality Russian SKSes in the $500 range.
>>
>>34398361
Guess your right but, damn, my position isn't as sunny as I want it to be.

Wondering if I should just buy a romanian 5.45x39 rifle instead as a "beater".

Well, the Romanian SAR-2s and AK74s are higher quality than WASRs by a mile.

I'd get one just to have it.
>>
>>34398461
Hmmm.... well shit. I mean its the only funstore in town and the other two ive gone too are WORSE with prices (I srsly saw a fucking WASR for 800 in one of them).

>>34398408
Id like to buy online, but i currently live at home with the parents (ie loser virgin NEET) and my mother (inspite of voting GOP for 40 years solid) HAET GUN, is terrified of them and wishes that they would all be destroyed.

I feel the need to buy one without her knowing about it due to...well i dont live in the greatest town on Earth and there have been a rather large number of break ins recently round here, as well as the leftists attacking government officials now. In America. So i need to buy a gun of some variety in cash. This one seemed like the best option i could find.
>>
>>34397709
im poor so i only have a wasr. im just gonna put some polymer furniture on it and pretend its an arsenal or a saiga
>>
>>34398506
Only advice I can give is buy once, cry once. I'd say be patient, but patience can only take you so far if it looks like you're being taken for a ride, so to speak.

B-but my folding stock with 4.5mm trunnion! At this point I'm willing to just buy a seperate after market folding stock.
>>
>>34398543
Sage advice and appreciate it but I think I've learned it already. I bought a WASR originally but I wanted an SLR with a folding stock. Now I've grown to want plum mags, 5.45x39, and a folding stock. I am 95% sure that .mil fag was taking me for a ride. He frustrated me so much when I found his text this early morning. FUCK

>>

Well then one more thing, sure i may be overpaying due to funstore prices but is it a good first gun at least?
>>
>>34397746
MI just came out with "Gen 2" AK optics mounts that are pretty much RS Regulate clones: https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/category-s/400.htm
>>
>>34398720
>https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/category-s/400.htm
How the fuck are these in any way "clones" of the RS regulate?
>have one standard base
>different specialized tops for different optics/options
>WOW HUH YOU LIKE STOLE RS REGULATES INTELLTUAL POPERTY RIGHT
>>
>>34398720
>>34398736
Also, not "just" these have been out for months, in fact about a month ago I came around asking about these mounts and you fags convinced me to just get the Arsenal SM-13, which as it turns out, was the wrong choice for my rifle.
>>
>>34398720
those are just as expensive as rs regulate so whats the point
>>
chimps show us the clubfoot

Guy wants to trade me a spam can of 7n6 for a 1938 tula mosin nagant with finnish SA stamp.

7n6 is going for like $220-240 on gunbroker right now for a spam can.
Mosins like mine are going for $280-300.

I want more 7n6 but I don't know how to bring it up so it's kind of an equal trade on my part?
Ask him for a 5.45 magazine or two?

Y'all have any thoughts?

Pin isn't going in
>>
>>34398867
Can you take it back out and find where the hangup is using the pin and stock alone? It must be in the bottom rung of the stock hinge, right?
>>
>>34398922
I'm gonna back the pin out and work something out, but I can't right now because my punch broke.

Good news is they're compatible, it's just this pin is a bitch because it's meant to be a press fit
>>

>Good news is they're compatible, it's just this pin is a bitch because it's meant to be a press fit
That's great news for those of us that have clubfoot stocks with hardware. Makes an RPK that much easier
>>
>>34398946
Emphasis on with hardware, because the clubfoot mounting bracket isn't a very common piece. You can find RPK74M furniture sets on gunbroker at any given time, but the bracket is almost always paired with the folding trunnion.
>>
>>34398867
Post pics of the whole thing. Also when are you going to get it rebarreled?

That's a 5.5mm pin, correct? I might have a spare in my gun parts box, if I do do you want it to see if it'll work (assuming you don't have any other pins)?
>>
>>34399052
The whole thing? I'm gonna get the gunsmithing work done hopefully early next year

>>34399101
It's a proprietary pin, I already have a spare because one came with the trunnion and one came installed on the rifle already.
>>
>>34399144

An AK builder is going to let me rummage around in his "spare parts and bits/bobs" box to even out a trade we're doing.

I've never built shit in my life, anything in particular I should look for that would be useful to the average pleb?
