I'm kinda contemplating a Charter arms bull dog in .44 special as a hunting sidearm and occasional CCW. Anyone have any thoughts on them are they any good?
>>
>>34397429
Since I already snagged one:

https://www.greentophuntfish.com/smith-wesson-model-64-trade-ins.html

The one I got is beautiful apart from not having the original grips and having the department/officer number carved into the frame. They had a pre-lock one with wood grips and no engraving but it was pretty beat up.

If you have more cash and reload I'd go for the new Ruger GP100 in .44spl. That fucking thing is stout. You could load up some hot ass .44spl that would destroy a Bulldog.

I got shit from someone here when I bought a similar holster. The strap on top snaps securely over the hammer enough that there's no way the trigger could be pulled enough to make it fire under real life snag situations. You're trying too hard to meme without knowing what you're doing.

Every new auto pistol is basically some form of Glock at this point. That's because auto pistol design is resolving itself into it's most efficient form at current technology levels. Revolvers hit that plateau in the early 20th century. Chiappa wanted to have a product that stood out in the marketplace so they could sell them and what they came up with is meme-tier factor one hundred and meme-lords have been eating that shit up ever since. It is not an improvement on established revolver technology. It is a bunch of fucky engineering shoehorned into a marketable aesthetic. Looks cool in sci-fi movies but that's about it.

Have you ever shot one?

If you did you would know how completely different it feels to shooting a traditional revolver. With .38s it literally feels like shooting a .22. No kick up or anything
>>
What's the most "old cop" revolver out there?
I'm thinking a Model 10 or 19.
>>
>>34400970
I've shot one and wouldn't own one or recommend it to anyone. Any recoil reduction from the barrel placement is offset by the lightness of the gun's aluminum frame. It's not like you can feed it a steady diet of hot magnums anyway. It's not even K-frame tier in strength.

I don't find the recoil of even the stoutest .357 magnum loads the slightest bit uncomfortable out of a medium or large frame all steel gun and I like the ruggedness and durability of all steel frames.

The Rhino offers nothing performance-wise over other designs. It's appeal is all aesthetic.

>>34401123

I've got a .44 super Blackhawk and am wondering if there are any decent concealable 44mags. I'd load it with 44spl probably but I'd like it to be able to handle both. I only ask because I am too poor to afford that many different calibers.

>>
>>34406751
What kind of trigger work? If you're just looking for a basic action job on a S&W or Ruger I'd advise you to do it yourself. Lots of videos on jewtube that show how to take these guns apart and metal polish is cheap.
>>
>>34406777

I cc a ruger lcr everyday, I would only carry something you're not attached to, and dont mind having locked up in evidence for god knows how long.
>>
>>34406797

Basic polishing, but im also considering getting a 4 inch gp100 magnaport'd and new sights. Kinda like a hot rodded combat revolver. If I like it enough ill have them hot rod a .44 mag of mine.
>>
>>34404914
raging bull is tuco salamanca's sidearm what do you think
>>
>>34406767

Good for the maintenance aspect maybe not so good from the practice aspect. I have found getting proficient with double action triggers took more time than say getting decent with a Glock. That said the type of person who buys a gun and throws it in a drawer never to be seen again until one night 15yrs later when they hear something downstairs isn't gonna be any better with a Glock than a revolver.
>>
>>34397429
The Redhawk can handle .500 S&W? Would think you'd need at least a Super Redhawk, and even that sound sketchy.
>>
>>34406820
Well, before you yell cringe, I plan on walking across the states whenever I finally pay off my debts. I want something that can take a beating and deliver some decent power

I'm not a rich man so I can't afford to have that many different guns. I mostly have a bunch of milsurp and the Blackhawk.
>>
>>34406841
You could do the action yourself easily. There are several videos on youtube that show disassembly and what to polish. You can also get shims and a pack of reduced power springs to play around with. Ruger DA triggers clean up very well with a little TLC. Sights are also something you can easily change yourself. The front sight is held in by a spring loaded detent and the rear by a single pin. You can go fiber optic, night sights or any of several other types that will just drop right in. As far as porting...I think it's kind of a meme on any caliber that doesn't start with at least a 4.

you can pay a shitload to have what you want done or you can do it yourself(minus the porting) and buy more ammo.
>>

>>
>>34406858
If you're fixated on 44spl or 45acp then I'd go for the Ruger GP100 in .44spl. Tough as fuck all stainless steel will do good with extended time out in the elements much better than a 1911 imo. If you'd consider a .357 I'd say stainless GP100 4.2".
>>
>>34406870

If I like it on my 357 in gonna have it done on my .44 mag vaquero with a 3.75inch barrel.

I really just want a rodded "combat" gp100. I cant leave well enough alone.
>>
>>34406858

Not cringe at all. A super blackhawk is your best power per weight per price per abuse taking gun on the market.
>>
>>34406908
I wouldn't say I'm fixated, but I have some 45acp laying around from family members who gave it to me. I can shoot 44spl in my blackhawk. I'm not opposed to 357. Are those S&w 8 shots any good for the price? That's what I'd be most interested in (aside from a mp412 ;_;)
>>34406919
I'm just thinking about my occasional stops in at cities and shit. If I actually do this hike, I'll more than likely visit some cities on the way, and I don't want to try and CC a 7.5 inched revolver in the middle of summer or something. I guess I could open carry but that is attention I don't want

>anything specific I need to look for when buying one?

Go look at the "how to check a used revolver" guide on the /k/ sticky if you have the chance to check it in person. On a more general note, I would ask what it is you plan to do with the gun. 29-2s are very collectible, but, if your goal is to fire a lot of full-house .44 magnums, you should be aware that they do not hold up well to that kind of use. Hickok's older 29 has tens of thousands of rounds through it, but that's only because he mostly sticks to handloads that have been downloaded to .44 Special pressures. The newer 29s do not have the aforementioned issue; they will hold up much better to hard use than older, pre-lock .44 Magnums will.
>>
>>34409277
mostly for fun shooting, and some mag competition.

I'll load my own 44 mags. The power factor for the mag competitions is 270, and I reckon the gun will hold up If i load 240 grains to 1200 fps
>>
>>34409398
If you plan to compete with it, seriously consider either buying a Ruger or a newer 29 if at all possible. I have heard of some shooters who, back in the day, actually had their pre-endurance package 29s break in a single afternoon of competition. The endurance package only became standard on 29-3s and later; there are some 29-2s that have them, but those are specifically marked 29-2E IIRC. If you are still thinking of getting the gun in your picture regardless, be sure to exercise due diligence before finalizing your purchase.

>Flutes are for faggots

Then why does OP play the skin flute so often?
>>
>>34409466
most of the issues with the 29-2 stemmed from the silhouette boys shooting their handloads for it, I've talked to some of them, experiencing unlocking the cylinder from recoil, also older 44mag factory ammo was pretty hot.

but as I said 270 power factor isnt that much. and from what I've read, the lighter 44 mag loads wont damage the gun at all.
It was the old hunting loads, and feedback from silhouette people that forced S&W to make the endurance package. alltough good. theres something about the pinned and recessed ones

Posted last week about winning a S&W 17-8 10-shot .22 revolver. Well, I just got home with it and took a pic of it with my 29-5 .44 mag.

Definitely impressed with it from a visual standpoint. It has the original receipt in the box from the guy who purchased it new in 1996. It barely has any wear marks on the cylinder, he must have stored it away and rarely fired it. Also crazyfeeling how heavy it is for a .22, I can't tell the difference between it and the 29. Can't wait to shoot it and see what the recoil feels like.

As I said, the 4 inch sp101 has the option of being concealed, shooting hot loaded 357s, and the barrel length can get appropriate speed from rounds.

It doesn't conceal perfectly, it doesn't shoot perfectly, but it can do it all.

You can't conceal your gp100 unless you're a massive fat fuck and wear a tent for a shirt. But of course it's not meant to be concealed, so it's not the do it all revolver.

Actual .44 specials don't need to be as stout as a .44 mag, so they can be a hair smaller and lighter while still taking ammo that is both VERY accurate and capable of being pushed as fast as you reasonably want to go for paper, pins or people. Sure you can use special in a .44mag but then you have to pay extra attention to the chambers as they will have more carbon build up from the case mouth on. Dedicated guns work better with their designed ammunition

You know there are reasons outside of min/maxing numbers to want a gun in a particular cartridge. The .44spl is a historically significant cartridge in the development of big bore handguns as we know them today. Anyone that is enough of a revolver nerd and reloader to read the writings of Keith, Skelton and many others would value a gun in .44spl for reasons beyond the numbers.

I love the thing it's a fun top break revolver, I think I paid a little over $200 from a pawn shop for mine.
Most of the .38s&w ammo you find these days is weak because of the cheaper American made top breaks from the early part of the 1900's. I just started reloading and made some of the original British .380/200gr loads and it's a hoot.
>>
>>34423615

Yes, but they wouldn't have any particular interest in a GP100 in 44 special any more than, say, a wild west aficionado would want an AR-15 chambered in .38-40.

We'll see how the market bears it, but it will probably end up being a semi-collectible rarity since nobody would buy one over other more sensible offerings.

A 3" all-steel gun is too big and heavy for comfortable pocket carry, obviating the need for a bobbed hammer.
3" is plenty of barrel for .357 Mag, especially with today's short barrel-oriented loads.
Post-and-trench fixed sights are barely-usable trash and have no place on a gun that's going to be fired under stress, in poor light, in the presence of innocent bystanders.
The Model 66 is the gun that >>34427074 would be asking for if he knew what was good for him.

Too bad that picture is the "before" and then he bobbed the hammer.

A hammer is nothing but a liability on a cc revolver.

And I would say there are plenty of pocket carried all steel 3" guns, especially in winter coats.

Plenty of police evidence to suggest otherwise to your "opinion" on the sights.
>>
>>34428034
Bobbed hammers on holster guns are nothing but virtue-signalling and removing weight from the hammer can lead to light strikes.
Unless you're pocket-carrying and legitimately need to worry about the hammer fucking with your drawstroke, a bobbed hammer is a solution in search of a problem.
If you don't have the self-discipline to shoot DA without getting your gun circumcised then you probably shouldn't be carrying a weapon in public to begin with.
>>
>>34427965

no, i'd rather have a .38 special.

again, sounds very stupid, almost nobody uses sights on real defensive situations, i train for instinctive shooting.

no, i wouldn't pocket carry a 3" revolver, the bobbed hammer would help so the hammer wouldn't get caught in my shirt while drawing.

again, i'm 1,91 so 3" is not a problem at all, it's enough for a nice .38 spl+p load and more accurate than snubbies, while being a little smaller and lighter than a 4".

i know what's good for me, and that's a double stack pistol, but if i needed to carry a revolver, this would be it.
>>
>>34428209

if you do it correctly, you won't have any issues with bobbed hammers.

it's hardly ever a problem.
>>
>>34428209
Why is someone pocket carrying a revolver such a foreign idea to you? And again, the hammer gains you nothing (light strikes are horseshit, if you have decent springs that's a total non-issue) and only poses something to get stuck on your shirt/pocket.

I love my enfield revolver, they usually come in pairs, one with a full hammer and one without the hammer thumb plate thing. If you can barter and get both for 450-500 that's even better, great shooting pistols, and easy to carry in a pinch.

I have (2) six inch barrels. One is ported and the other is not. I currently have the non-ported barrel installed.

Dan Wessons are switch barrel revolvers, so all of the barrels have the same thread pattern,

Ruger double actions are probably the pinnacle of double action revolver design. You can break one down to this point with a flat head screw driver in about two minutes. All the lockwork is in the trigger module.

I just picked up an Allen Red Mesa leather holster from Academy today. It's a right handed (or crossdraw I guess) hip holster that's more than long enough for your 586. In fact they had a bunch of different sizes there, but I grabbed the largest I saw that says it will fit up to a 6.75" barrel. It's a nice little holster for 10 bucks (was on sale, normally is 20).

What kind of ammo do you guys recommend for a .38 snub?

>>
>>34438310
I have no expierence in the matter. But I would say if you are shooting full power mags though it, it would be a bad idea. They have a lot of powder to burn. And alot of that powder woud be shot straigt out of the ports. Which would be even more blinding in dark condtion then they would be normally. Honestly you can probbly master the 357, so the ports would be unneceasry. Also a short barrel "combat" 357 seems silly. If it will be already drawn then the barrel lenght will not matter. Any percived unbalence can be trained out. Also I apologise for my drunkiness. I am celebrateing early American day.

>snub .44 Mag

This is you after shooting .44 Mag out of a snub
>>
>>34439967
Nope.

The more gas the chambering generates- the better it works. And- surprisingly- they really don't disturb your night vision any worse than an un-ported gun. I've shot a number of night matches, and none of the guns I saw shot (50-odd shooters) was all that bad.

Short-barreled .357's work amazingly well with porting. Modern defensive mmo has low-flash powders, and .357 produces a lot of high pressure gas, so it's an ideal porting candidate.

>>34397429

>>
>>34440050
But why get a short barrel 357? Why not get as much power as possiable. Also I was talking form a reloading perspective. I use h110 if it matters.
>>
>>34440105
H-110 will flash like it's going out of style. Len Brownell Sr. has a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 magnum, and he let me shoot it on an indoor range with full power reloads with H-110. Ka-Chow! Dust came down out of the ceiling! And yes- it's ported. H-110 is probably the best second choice.

Hey- don't take my word for it. Get outside some night and set up an IPSC target at 25 yards and shoot six quick shots. Some of the first shooting instruction I ever got was on a blacked-out police range, so I never developed this apprehension I see people exhibit about shooting at night.

3"-5" is about ideal for carry.

Do you think the deer knows that your reloads were 50 fps slower?
>>
>>34440258
I was speaking for a "combat" revovler. which I as I said earlier would likely be already drawn which in my mind makes barrel length inconsequential. What would #1 be? lil'gun, 2400, or another?
>>
>>34440258
>Do you think the deer knows that your reloads were 50 fps slower?
I do think it's pretty funny that the same people will gush about guns like the SRH Alaskan for bear defense and then turn around and wonder if a 6" .44 Mag is adequate for deer or not.
>>
>>34440333
Personly I think that the bigger the caliber the smaller the barrel you can go with. I would prefer a 6 in 357, but woud be happy with a 5 inch +p 45 colt.
>>
>>34440378
I have two .45 colts in 5" and it's perfect. Short enouh for a holster (I've even carried mine IWB, believe it or not) and just long enough for a fine shot.

.357 in the 70's, 80's and 90's was built around the 4" and 125 grain hollowpoint. I had a number of PD's as customers, and I never saw a 6" .357 after about 1990 in a duty belt. I expect this also had something to do with the higher security holsters that started appearing in that era. Swivel holsters disappeared.
>>
>>34440330
I haven't shot a .357 reloaded with 2400 in years- but it might work. Most of the .357 ammo I shot was duty ammo, as the police departments would supply it like it was tap water.

Any suggestions?

I have a Speed-Six that's similar- Herrett grips, bobbed hammer, but in .357. A touch heavy, but a very solid carry gun.
>>
>>34428209
Nope.

Only Colt actions suffer from the light-strike issue with bobbed hammers.

You'll never touch the hammer in a defensive shooting. You're wasting training time if you bother to train that way as well.
>>
>>34444601

Jesus H Christ thats asking for it. The guy most not shot six guns a lot.
>>
>>34444753
>You'll never touch the hammer in a defensive shooting. You're wasting training time if you bother to train that way as well.
Which is why bobbing the hammer is mostly virtue-signalling.
Anybody can deliberately avoid shooting single-action, but only someone interested in broadcasting how serious and tactical they are would bother chopping bits off their gun to make it obvious to everyone that they only shoot DA.
The only exception is on pocket guns for which a hammer snagging on the draw is a serious concern.
>>
>>34444678
A 63 with a bobbed hammer is probably about as close as you'll realistically get.
That or a .22 LR LCR, I guess.

>>34445201
It really depends on how long your thumb is and how aggressively you roll your support hand forward.
>>
>>34445201
I'm no professional by any means. But I ONCE got my left thumb in front of the cylinder. It blackend my thumb nail and I bled from a peppering of pin sized wounds. Ever since then I just keep my thumb away from the cylinder. And that was just with 38 spl. Also what gn of bullet and velecoity do you use? do you reload? if so what poweder? even more so what gun and how are your groups off a rest? I like a max charge of h110/w296 with a 125 gn bullet. Lots of noise and still feel like I can control it.
