Do you plan on shooting the gun? Do not buy the Colt if this is the case. Parts and service are expensive and difficult to come by for any Colt revolver if they break, and they break more often because they use a 2 point lockup rather than a 3 or 4 point lockup.

Meanwhile, the Model 10 is one of the most produced handguns of the 20th century and is easy to work on as long as you have a shop manual.

Comparing triggers: the Colt is a little better in single action, but the Smith and Wesson is a lot better in double action

Be advised that a K-frame is only a small gun in comparison to other, larger revolvers.
Furthermore, K-frame .357s are redundant since the introduction of the L-frame, which allows you to shoot as much .357 as you want and carry an extra round at the cost of maybe an ounce or so of added weight and a hair of cylinder thickness.
>>
>>34347998
so it's heavier, thicker, less aesthetic and more front heavy. I'm getting it to be more concealable than my hi power, am I wrong in thinking that it wouldn't be?
>>
>>34347780
The Vaquero is essentially a Blackhawk with terrible 1800s-style fixed sights for cowboy LARPing purposes.
Old/new model Ruger single-actions are pre/post-transfer bar safety.

If you want a small revolver for convenient carry, you should just get an LCR or a 442/642/638/637 etc. Unlike a 66, they don't require that you have a belt or a holster. You can just stick them in your pocket and be ready to go, and modern examples are capable of handling .38 +P loadings with no problems.

If you go with the 66 instead, it will end up overlapping with your Hi-Power in terms of the role it occupies (ie a belt gun).
>>
>>34347780
>>34348057
On the topic of SAAs, how do things like the Blackhawk or Vaquero compare to closer replicas like an Uberti in real terms? I know the Rugers have changes that claim to make the gun safer and more convenient (transfer bar, cylinder spins when loading gate is opened rather than on half-cock) and that the Rugers are of course much stronger guns in terms of the loads they will handle. However, I don't know how these differences play out in actual use. Which style of SAA is better from the standpoint of someone who thinks they're cool, appreciates their historical value/authenticity, but also isn't axiomatically opposed to ahistorical features if those features make the gun objectively better?
>>
>>34348069
I was thinking of getting a 442 as well later down the road for ankle (bug) or pocket carry. My thinking on the 66 was that it was just big enough to handle 357 recoil, but easy to conceal and easier than the hi power to take on and off (the hi powers got a pretty long slide). I'd probably keep it in a Don Hume belt holster

Revolvers are typically easier to conceal than autos because of their lumpy, irregular profile (especially in the grip area), but 1) single-stack autos like the Hi-Power are already almost trivial to conceal and 2) the 66 would only be an ounce or so lighter than your HP, loaded, so it wouldn't be easier to carry, either.

Have you looked into a Ruger Speed Six? It sounds like you place importance on the ability for the gun to fire magnums and to hold up to magnums while still being decent for carry, and the Speed Six is an ideal gun in that respect. It is a K-frame sized gun--it actually fits in the same holsters--that is much, much better than any of the K-frames at holding up to sustained magnum use. There are also Service and Security Sixes with shorter barrels as well, but I think those are rarer.
>>

I have a Ruger in 45colt and a Uberti in 22. I would recommend the ruger if you can afford it. The transfer bar doesn't mess with the trigger pull to my uneducated finger, but its nice to load 6 and the ruger definitely feels better.

That said? The Uberti is one of my favorites and I recommend any 22 SAA for fun. If you can afford it, the Ruger Bearcats are awesome.

>>

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/659299425 is not a Speed Six, but it's an example of what I meant. You can usually find a Security Six in this kind of condition for less than $500 OTD throughout the United States, and it will be more durable than anything in the same size category except perhaps a Manurhin.
>>
>>34348280
Sounds like a good deal

Manuhrin snubs are probably unobtainium so no worries there
>>
>>34348240
A revolver's cylinder makes it less comfortable to carry IWB, but doesn't affect its concealability because even if it prints it doesn't scream "gun" like the boxy grip of an automatic.
It's just a vague lump near your beltline that could just as easily be a love handle or an innocuous thing like a phone or something.

>2 more rounds
>much more easy to add night sights

>faster reload

And it's got just as good if not a better double action trigger in a pretty aesthetic package

Revolvers truly excel in the smallest of jobs
>j frame in a pocket, ankle, comfy iwb carry

Or for the largest of jobs

>bear defense

You shouldn't be using a handgun for home defense and definitley not the earsplsitten loudenboomer that is a short barreled 357 indoors.

My friend said revolvers generally have more stopping power than semi-autos because they throw big bullets at high velocities.

How much truth is there to that?
>>
>>34348925

Revolvers literally use larger sized cartilages and even small revolvers come chambered in magnum rounds.

So I would say that is pretty true as far as hand guns go.

>>34347855
>>34347792
So grab a Colt as a show piece, and the S&W as something to actually use? Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
Does that logic apply to most of their respective models, right? Like a model 36 vs a detective special, a 686/586 vs a Python/Trooper, etc?
>>
>>34349026
Yes, Colt revolvers are just not as strong as a Smith and especially a Ruger

I know the Python is one of those guns that people masturbate over, but a GP100 is far stronger mechanically
>>
>>34348925
Arguably true but practically meaningless in the (implied) context of shooting two-legged animals.
All bullets designed for use on people are designed to penetrate 12-18 inches and expand to around 1.5x caliber, and common service calibers like .40 S&W and .45 ACP do so just fine.
Using, say, a .44 Magnum on a person will punch a ~.70" hole straight through a person and maintain enough energy on the other side to potentially hurt another person, unlike a "weaker" round that would stop inside the body or plop limply out the exit wound.
Where revolvers really come into their own is when shooting at other animals, like deer and bears, which have thicker bodies and heavier bones, necessitating more penetration and different bullet design considerations.
>>
There's an Astra Police revolver in a gunstore near where I live, and I'm conflicted.
It's only 259, and handling it, it looks like it's in good condition. But are they good for getting used to revolvers? And if a part breaks or needs replacing, will it take a lot of work to replace parts? If not, what would you recommend instead, /k/?

I think it's the parenthetical curve at the front of the barrel that ruins it for me.
If it were flat at the front it still wouldn't look great, but it would be a marked improvement.

I agree. I was going to spend the extra money to get a Match Champion, but decided against it because the obnoxious billboards on both sides of the barrel.
I know that probably sounds stupid, but for such a nice heirloom quality gun, it really does ruin the looks of it.

You pretty much already know the answer based on your questions in the previous post. If something breaks it's probably going to be pretty tough to get it working again.

If you just want a revolver for shits and giggles with no real use in mind I'd recommend getting a used S&W model 10. There are a fuckton of them out there and parts will never be an issue.

Suppose a Model 500 S&W is used in a self-defense scenario. Assuming a square shot on the chest, what the fuck would happen?

You entire ribcage explodes outwards like chestburster emerging? Spine, heart and both lungs get pulverized from the sheer force of the round? Supposedly the .500 S&W doesn't have much penetration but causes absolutely hideous craters

I am about to into GP100 and this post pretty much mirrors my feelings about the Match Champion. It's a shame Ruger has to consistently shit up their guns with aesthetic-killing billboards. It's even more of a shame because by the time I buy shims, a spring kit, a fiber front sight and new grips for my NON-MC GP100 I'll be at right about the same cost as a MC. Would have been nice to just be able to buy a gun pre-modded for once...
>>
>>34346655
I have two I suppose.

I want a pre model number Smith and Wesson 44 Magnum, with original box and 98%+ condition.
Wouldn't shoot it that much but the pre model 29s were low volume very high quality guns and just beautiful.

The other would be a Bowen custom GP44.
They take a Ruger Alaskan 44 mag, cut the frame extension off, put on a Redhawk barrel (I would want 5 inch) and you end up with a 44 magnum Super Redhawk with it's improved internals and the balance and aesthetics of the regular Redhawk (no scope mounts cuts or ridiculous barrel extension). On top of that it'll have all the accurizing and trigger work a custom gun from them normally features.

Fuck me I need guidance anons. I am going to get a GP100 next month. Was going to get 4.2 or 5" SS .357. Now seriously conflicted by the .44spl. Only "real" use I foresee for this gun is as snake medicine when hiking and either gun can fulfill that role.

Downsides for the .44spl:
Ammo more expensive so I will shoot it less.
Short ass barrel so hot handloads will be a waste.

Upsides for the .44spl:
Dat unfluted cylinder.
Fat guy in a little coat (big caliber short barrel aesthetic).

So like everything on /k/ it comes down to practicality or "muh benis" aesthetics.

Elmer Keith indiscriminately murdered tons of unsuspecting animals from hundreds of yards away with a 4" Model 29; as long as you don't mind a little extra muzzle blast and recoil, you should be able to load the GP100 arbitrarily hot and achieve whatever you want with it.

What is the basic gestalt on this thing? You'd think a multi cal revolver would bepopular but this thing is just a rumor of a meme. What happened to it?
>>
>>34376456
Not accurate and breaks easily, most people didn't want to pay extra for a revolver that could fire whatever cartridges they found under the pillows of their couch.
>>
>>34376456
Jack of all trades and master of none. You might be surprised to learn this but a gun bored and grooved to fire a multitude of calibers will not fire any of them accurately. Loading the thing with rimmed cartridges sucks because of the spring loaded extractor which are designed for grooved automatic cartridges. Because the chambers are bored deep for longer cartridges like .357 mag, the shorter ones like .380 auto end up with hilariously poor performance due to the gap between bullet and cylinder in addition to fouling up the cylinders a lot. The only real use for such a gun is for preppers who want something that can fire all sorts of garbage they find but any given prepper would just rather buy multiple guns over spending thousands on just one that isn't particularly high quality.

So don't know if this has been answered but I'm looking to buy a gp100 and wondering what a good price is. Gunbroker has them listed at around $600 but the lgs has them for $750. Would dealing with the hassle of an online purchase be worth it?
>>
>>34381169

It's really not so much of a hassle. Win auction. Pay for auction. Send seller FFL information. Seller mails gun. Go to LGS, fill out 4473 and pay transfer fee.

I haven't bought a new mfg gun from my LGS since gunbroker took off. I go in there before every purchase and they are nowhere near the price I can get online.
>>
>>34381169
Low-mid $600s is good, anything under MSRP is arguably tolerable.

I've almost bought the 3.75 Birdshead Vaquero or the 3.75 Super Blackhawk so many times.

Still can't decide between one of those or just a 5.5" Super BH.

I'd like to get a comparison on the shorty barrel plus either of the grips on the 44 mags vs 357 out of a steel J-frame.

My 357 J-frame experience is the first round or two is OK but after the 3rd round you're just looking at the gun like "wtf I thought we were friends," and by the 5th I'm short stroking it because I'm a pussy.
>>
I need your help, oh knowledgeable ones.

Will a Taurus Model 85 fit into a "J-Frame" holster? How well? Indistinguishable?
>>
>>34346655

An original model 27 with enough wear to still shoot and under $1000.

I have a thing with liking overbuilt 357s, there's something wrong with me.
>>
>>34384176

Any cloth or leather holster will fit great. Kydex not so much.
>>
>>34384207
Great, thanks man. I'm looking at the Desantis Sof-Tuck, good stuff or no?
>>
>>34384147

That vaquero is kinda a lil cunt to shoot at first. It recoils pretty hard, but once you get those diamonds wore down on the grips just a little bit its a lot easier and painless.

If you reload get the super blackhawk.
If you're a cowboy wanna be get the vaquero.

If both, get both fuck it.

Any suggestions on a scope for a revolver that can handle .44mag recoil? 2x at least would be fabulous.

I have a 4inch gp100 and i can drill out bullseyes at 40 yards. I cant praise those guns enough. If its a hiking gun why not a 3inch sp101? Fixed sights and stainless construction make it a lot more rugged

Nothing wrong with liking quality, anon.
I only have the po' boy model but it's still a damn fine gun.

My lgs gets them for 575$

Neither, I just keep buying/wanting innawoods guns (muh packing' pistol) and then never going outside.
>>
>>34384392

I wouls grab the super blackhawk then you can shoot some nasty ammo at nasty creatures.
>>
>>34352801
Well I guess no one does. Dang.

I've shot a 101 and it's not fun to shoot many full power loads cause it's so tiny.

Cant decide if the korth supersport is the lamest mall ninja revolver I've ever seen, or the goddamn coolest revolver on the planet.

I think if you can afford it it's the coolest ever. If you can't afford it it's the lamest thing ever.

So for me it's lame as fuck and my $500 Ruger is like 5000% better in every way...
>>
>>34386971
It's a Nighthawk, so it's the coolest revolver but it costs $500 extra because there's a bird on it.

I want to get a revolver to carry on me, but I dunno.

Snubs look like they'd conceal really well, but from what I've heard of them, they sound like they're basically just back-up guns.

Should I just get something bigger with a 3 or 4 inch barrel?
>>
>>34390919
A small revolver is just like a small automatic. It's something you carry when you can't conceal something larger due to how you dress or something you carry as a backup to a larger gun instead of, or in addition to, reloads for your primary.

Revolvers aren't bad as a primary, they're just suboptimal because of their high weight and low capacity.
If you're a dedicated carrier who doesn't mind lugging around a huge, all-steel gun every day, and you've got the stress inoculation and handgun marksmanship skills to make your shots count, 6-7 rounds should be plenty for a "typical" defensive gun use.
That said, most people don't have what it takes to use a wheelgun effectively and would be better served by a modern plastic service auto.

Somehow, this didn't occur to me. That's a good point.

>>34391056
I'm aware that an autoloader is more practical, but I'm set on a revolver. I've enjoyed every one I've handled, and I'd have no qualms using one for defense.

I'm just trying to fit one that would comfortable to carry, mainly.
>>
>>34391149
Sp101 in .357 is a carry gun it's not meant to be a soft shooting range toy. No grips are gonna fix the weight deficiency as far as soaking up recoil from hot magnum loads and even if they did they would be so comically big they would defeat it's role as a CCW.

Since a hiking gun is OWB there's absolutely no reason not to get the GP100. Definitely more fun to shoot hot loads out of at the range.
>>
>>34391196
>Somehow, this didn't occur to me.

If walking around in a plate carrier loaded down with mags and a slung rifle didn't cause problems from normies that would be the way to go. As it is you carry the most effective tool you can easily conceal. I love my wheelguns but I CCW a G19.

Any medium-sized revolver from a reputable manufacturer that you can find a decent holster for will suit your needs.
S&W 686P, S&W 69, Ruger GP100, Ruger Security Six, Manurhin MR73, etc.
>>
>>34391220
I'm not going to say you're wrong, because you have some points but a good chunk of it is subjective. Good grips don't have to be large, they just have to fit the hand well. Size and weight still factor into hiking guns no matter how it's carried and IF he were going OWB he would have no reason not to use an auto unless he's specifically worried about contact shots.

Whole point of a revolver for hiking is I'm in snake country so I want reliability with snake shot. Autos won't cycle rat shot.
>>
I was looking at buying this H&R 622, for 30$ the issue is that the cylinder doesn't revolve after being shot should I leave it or buy it.

pic simi related
>>
>>34392192
Do you feel qualified to fix it / that it would be worth having a gunsmith unfuck for you?
The latter seems doubtful, considering you could just buy a working gun for what the gun + parts/labor would end up running you.
>>
>>34392536
Thats kinda what i was thinking its the rarer 10" model and i thought it might be the ammo
>>
>>34393139
If the cylinder isn't rotating, then either it's unimaginably filthy or there's something mechanically wrong with it.
Revolvers aren't like autos where piss weak ammo can fail to cycle the action; all that is done by action of the trigger.
>>
>>34393212
Thanks for the info I'll pass on it then

Yo revolver nerds, I was thinking of getting a revolver before going camping over in the Pacific Northwest. was contemplating a Ruger GP100, ya think that's good enough for camping/hiking activities and whatnot?

That star bit is called a torx bit. Best fastener ever devised. We need to convert to torx as standard, they are impossible to strip. I've turned drivers into spiral pasta before the bitting stripped out, they're fantastic.
