I was a 68W for 4 years. Spent 2 years as a platoon medic in an infantry company, and one as a platoon medic in a recon platoon. The other year was spent in basic and AIT and time in a clinic.

My heart was just never in it, it was fun, but at the end of the day I didn't want to be a medic. I just realized that I wanted to do the grunt stuff more, but never could because medics need to be protected and I had a different role and everything they did, I did but with a 40 pound bag on my back the entire time.

I got out and now I'm going to school on the GI bill and studying mechanical engineering. I want to do graduate studies in bioengineering, so in a way I'll use some of that medical knowledge and training, but I never wanted to be a doctor, or a nurse, or an EMT/paramedic.

Almost all of my medic friends who got out too are going into nursing, it's like they don't know that they're allowed to be something else.

Paid for my University California college education (and my younger brother's) out of pocket/cash

And I've been on my own ever since but I was incredibly lucky

I'm just thinking, the dudes who were prior active know so much as you would expect them too. Recently I got designated the job of RTO for my platoon, and every drill I am horribly fucking up on the comms. I get pulled aside by my squad leader and chewed for doing a shit job (I deserve it, but I mean it sucks). If I was active I would have this shit down in a month. But instead I only get to really practice it for a grand total of about 16-18 hours every month, and reading manuals and guides in my off time does little to help me the way experience probably would.

I should have been active, or done a POG job because the guard is a pain on the combat MOS side.

The "training" is absolute garbage. Even basic soldiering stuff I don't know because I'm not going to spend my time on it when I'm busy with school.
They had EIB recently and everyone failed and they get all assmad. Meanwhile active side you get trained constantly for it.

God I hate drill weekends so bad. You're not the only one. Also, the majority of my unit are dumb ass prison guards and guys that larp as being bad ass infantry when they haven't done shit but larped on the weekend.
They all have jacked up trucks with infantry stickers and "we've got your 6 police muh thin blue line". They also claim they have ptsd from sitting in a guard tower on a big base.

Also, the ones that talk a big game about wanting to go to the sandbox were the ones crying when we left for our 9 month ass crack of the earth vacation.
