The Northern Vietnamese called for a peace treaty, they were killed in much larger amounts, and held significantly less territories than the Southern Vietnamese. Whatever happened after we were long gone wasn't our responsibility. Vietnam, Afghanistan (Soviet or American), or Iraq aren't really wars that the policing countries can win.

It's up to the populations that they're helping police to stand for what they want.

The South Vietnamese and the Communist Afghan governments lost those wars because they couldn't provide enough incentive for their populations to support them.
