Cowboys didn't fight for freedom, they herded cattle for farmers and some of them would carry a gun for self defense/to protect the herd from thieves and wildlife.
The wild west wasn't nearly as wild as TV and movies make it out to be. In fact, most towns you entered required you to leave your gun at the sheriff office and gun crime was less than it is today.
