Currently looking for some good science fi/k/tion recommendations.

Here's my own lists;

TV
>Star Wars: The Clone Wars
>The Expanse

Films
>District 9
>Avatar
>Elysium
>Rogue One
>Aliens

Vidya
>Halo (pre-Halo 4)
>Titanfall
>Mass Effect Trilogy
>Battlefield 2142

Books
>Halo series (mainly the pre-2011 stuff)
>The Expanse

My current to-watch/read/play list
>Battlestar Galactica
>Stargate
>Starship Troopers
>thinking of picking up the three most recent Call of Dutu games (I'm not much into the series). Are they any good?

I know I'm probably missing a lot of stuff which is why I'm making this thread. What scifi does /k/ recommend to add to my list to go through over the summer?

Whatelse do you know of that has a webley fosbery in it, sean connery in stripper panties/boots and an episode of rick and morty based on it?
science fiction at its best
>>
The Lost Fleet - series, hardish military sci-fi. Author writes amazing space combat and decent fleet politics, but stumbles a bit on character relationships. Its about a fleet stranded in enemy space, trying to get back to their own territory.

If that Starship Troopers on the list is the movie, add the book, if its the book, add the movie.
They're nothing alike but both are should be on the list.

Hammer's Slammers and The Mercenary/Falkenberg's Legion are both solid af and open up universes if you want to continue.

Skip COD, play STALKER if you haven't yet. ARMA if you have like minded friends to play with.

I'd also add the comic Atomic Robo just for a laugh, my little nephew fucking loves it so I've been reading it with/to him. Picked it out on a whim at a book store but its been fun. Who doesn't want to see a snarky robot fight nazi super-science, shoot lovecraftian horrors and punch monsters.

>Skip COD, play STALKER if you haven't yet. ARMA if you have like minded friends to play with.
Arma 3 I can kinda see, but as good as STALKER is, it isn't really sci-fi.

The movie is fine but it has fuck all to do with the book. Get it to understand popular 90s sci-fi memes. It's fun, but not ST.
Watch the OVA if you want to see a movie about Starship Troopers and not a fanfiction.
>>
>>33988022
I haven't read the whole series, but growing up there were a few around the house on the shelf and I've snagged one or two at used book stores. They're great. The books actually hit on the issue of vets being displaced and homeless with no path in life etc too
>>
>>33988048
Cool thanks I'd definitely recommend the DMC series by Rick Shelley
>>
>>33986518
Hey, when you read Starship Troopers remember that the movie is nearly, if not fully, detached from the material in the book. The book is written kind of like a biography, which is pretty entertaining/insightful in my opinion, whereas the movie is a political statement intermixed with some action.

"Soldier" a short story by Harlan Ellison is pretty dope sci fi with psychoc cat commanders, laser based trench warfare, accidental time travel and a soldier from the future fucking up a bunch of 1950's americans who try to convince him there is more to life than killing.

Since we seem to be missing /k/ scifi vidya, and that is my job, I feel obligated to jump in.

Rebel Galaxy
>space ship sim, including excellent combat, turrets, broadsides, mines. Story is a bit bland.

Pixel Privateers
>roguelike with massive gun/gear variety. Admittedly not VERY /k/ but pretty fun

Osiris
>best space survival out there. Still VERY early access though. Keep an eye on it.

Space Hulk: Deathwing
>disastrous release, overhaul coming that should make it into L4D2/Vermintide but with Terminator armour and gyrojet guns. Requires legit teamwork and tactics on high difficulties.

EVERSPACE
>very fun roguelike dogfighter

HELLDIVERS
>squad AARPG. Good tactics, massive gun variety, intersting support skills, etc.

Dawn of War 1
>best /k/ scifi RTS out there. Squads get individual weapon upgrades and support gear, dozen races, huge games. Apocalypse mod doubles size of game

Borderlands 2
>gun madness! Fun, but often very silly.

EYE Divine Cybermancy
>be cyberpunk incarnate. Earn brozoufs.

Metro series
>post apoc scifi in Moscow subway system. Use boolets as ammo. Improvise. Play Ranger mode for no hud, have to count rounds in mags or check manually.

Red Faction: Guerilla
>1776 on mars. Kick dirty earthicans out of your new republic. Mars For Martians! No Taxation Without Representation!

Bonus:
Coming soon (or never) Star Citizen. Full blown space sim. Buy a handgun! Board enemy ships! Invade planets! Do a lot of promised stuff that seems like it's too optimistic to be true! Maybe!

like actual furry feline cats. essentially cats are immune to psychic spies so they deliver the psychic messages to the soldiers. When the soldier get transported back in time he turns a subway train into slag before fainting from culture shock. they attempt to integrate him into society until he meets a cat and tries to get it to tell him what to do. The story ends with him savagely beating some people to death with his barehands and just basking in the glory of combat that he was ao rudely stolen from.

Infinite Warfare is kinda mediocre near-future sci-fi for most of the game, then the final mission rolls around and Reyes (the PC) gets DETERMINATION TO COMPLETE THE MISSION AT ANY COST and actually sacrifices his dudes and himself to accomplish the mission with fun stuff like ordering your CAS planes to kamikaze into AA defenses after they run out of ammo.

Culture Novels are sci-fi and operator as fuck.
consider phlebas was pretty 1337. the main character is a shape changer who is supposed to steal a ships AI that landed on his home planet. they use space operator jargon and have lasers that aren't on the visible spectrum. so the murder is hyper violent.

>thinking of picking up the three most recent Call of Dutu games (I'm not much into the series). Are they any good?

Personally I loved Advanced Warfare because it kinda just threw the wheels off of everything and made mobility insane. The randomized loot weapons were probably the biggest problem with the game, because you could go your entire game time without grabbing one of the totally broken weapons like the Hole Puncher or the Obsidian Steed.

But the map design, the sheer amount of freedom of movement, the weapon design... It was amazing.

I hated the newer ones because they thought that wallrunning and shitty limited slow-boost jetpacks would be better than AW's 15-foot jumps and the ability to dash 5 feet in any direction at any time.

As for sci-fi, though: AW focuses more on near-future themes rather than outright Sci-Fi. If anything, the premise of what is basically a Megacorp declaring war on the world is closer to some action movie's interpretation of cyberpunk than scifi. BlOps 3 goes into the realms of scifi and Infinite Warfare basically plays like a normal Call of Duty campaign but instead of continent-hopping special forces you're planet-hopping and you crash spaceships into space stations instead of cars into compounds.

Armored Trooper Votoms and it's spinoff, Armor Hunter Mellowlink, is /k/ as fuck in general, with borderline pornographic detail for the workings of the mechs and weaponry. Also very good at not portraying mechs as the end-all of weaponry.

Is correct. I played EVE for years. It is not a fun, /k/ video game, it's a second job, made when someone crashed a Titanload of sorrow, in-politics, and butthurt into an overly sophisticated economic simulator.
Wouldn't inflict that on my fellow /k/ommandos. I refuse to be responsible for sending one of these fine folks off to spend 8 hour days hauling lenses like a space trucker, to save up for a shiny new destroyer, only to have them get wrekt and lose it all the first time they skim into low-sec space. I refuse to subject them to that.

I also wanted a sequel with the insurgency doing they thang and going full on WEREWOLF, with niggas walking up dead, IED's and roadside bombs:EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN MURRICA! Not that guy, but the series has a lot of potential and cool moments... however the writer is not very good at prose and is addicted to cornball americana (e.g. the town hosts a highschool cheerleader parade to lift their spirits the day after they get teleported into 1632 germany and kill a bunch of landschneckt deserters who were torturing and raping the locals to death) (Also, basically everyone in germany accepts American democracy and morals overnight and elects an American to be president of their new European Union).

Its decent if you're ok with skipping a few pages every chapter and don't really care about the villians or medieval culture ever posing a realistic challenge to the protagonists.

>Undying Mercenaries series by B.V. Larson
Earth gets visited by a fuck huge Alien Fleet in the future and given the option of joining the Empire or being annihilated. They choose to join. To be part of the Empire each planet must contribute something to the Empire and is not allowed to pursue any other already "patented" technology. Earth has fuck all to contribute except fighters and create multiple Mercenary Legions for their section of the Empire Frontier.

Story Follows James McGill after hes kicked out of his parents house due to money.

>Necrospace series by Sean-Micheal Argo
Corporations own everything in the future and everyone is indebted to them from birth. Your assigned a job upon completion of School with zero chance of changing it in the future. Classic rich stay rich, everyone else stays poor mentality. The only chance for someone leaving their assigned job is to become a "REAPER", essentially a Salvage Marine. Lowest quality gear with primary job of salvage and recovery with slight fighting on the side, think space SeaBee's.

Cowboy Bebop is a classic for a reason. It's incredibly solid when it comes to the guns, and despite having a few gun-versus-sword battles there's none of that deflecting bullets shit or cutting them in half.
Trigun is good too, though it's much more goofy in general much less realistic when it comes to the guns. It's really fun, though.

If you can forgive the rule of cool physics of 20 to 100 ton battlemechs, it's a seriously epic military sci fi universe. The overall theme is that no matter how greatly man achieves, he will always be undone by the tragedy of war. And those wars are metal as fuck.

Short battletech history:
>jump drives invented, space colonization
>long communication time lead to outer colonies being unrulable by central authority
>outer colonies form new powers
>feudalism takes hold because you can't wait on a central authority to call the shots so you install trusted rulers on each planet.
>factions war with each other
>battlemechs are invented and become the dominant land unit
>destruction is getting excessive and everyone thinks about that fact
>eventually everyone chills and forms the Star League and shit is phenomenal for about 300 years
>some asshole from the periphery states usurps the throne and ruins everything
>most epic campaign in human history burns across the stars to retake Terra and end it
>Star League Defense Force has a hollow victory since the component member states are fighting for an empty throne
>SLDF commander says were better than this and leaves for parts unknown with 80% of his army volunteering to go with him
>they leave, successor states descend into horrific total war and destroy their inheritance of technology from the Star League era for another 300 ish years
>battletech main timeline starts in the burned out husk of a once great and noble civilization as the successor states grind out what border wars they can afford and mercenaries try to make it to the next payout in centuries old mechs they can only patch together, the engineering knowledge behind them poorly understood
>and oh yeah, that SLDF army went off into deep space, formed a warrior society, and just kept upgrading their cool toys
>a few decades after the classic setting they decide to come back and Make the Inner Sphere Great Again

>What people won't tell you is that LoGH is the poster child for filler episodes
Not really. The show really makes it seem like they're leaving a lot of details out for the sake of brevity (remember, they're turning something like 12 books into a 100+ episode anime). Pretty disappointingly, though, the books don't have too much to them. The show is almost a scene-by-scene recreation of the books, with only a couple exceptions (like adding Attenborough).

It definitely has its flaws, but it actually does a really good job at avoiding the worst of the anime tropes. It's just got a lot of highly stylized depictions of what amounts to the Napoleonic Wars in space, which makes it hard to get into if you're looking for something more realistic. It follows a similar pattern that we see in some of the more romanticized depictions of a lot of great commanders like Napoleon or Alexander, where the grim realities are usually ignored and the war instead whitewashed as personal struggles between commanders.

Would highly recommend as well the sequel book Good Luck Yukikaze, which in tandem with SYY formed the basis of the OVA series. GLY is admittedly more philosophically driven, but it's a great read nonetheless, and still has some high octane action stuff that even the OVA didn't touch on.

The prose fits the nature of aerial combat so well.
Its like a calm detached checklist of actions, and you can tell the author did some serious research into the minutiae of modern air combat. Occasionally the dialogue feels a wee bit clunky, but I'm pretty certain that's just due to the nature of JP>EN translations. Plus, David Drake recommends it, and that nigga knows whats what in terms of mil scifi.

The OVA is worth it just for the supremely sexy aircraft designs.
>>
>>34009084
Only reason Quaritch lost was due to that 'the planet herd you!!!' bullshit. If it hadn't been for that it probably would have been a total wipe for the natives. Also yeah, why did the ODSTs try to use drop pods to board a ship anyway? Seems ill-advised.

Diamond Dozen, intensive purposes, yada yada, jokes and such.

Its learning curve, mate, not curb.

But that aside, the game isn't to hard to learn and play, but it does take some dedication to get into. It is a bit more complicated than most mmos but given the time it takes to progress, you have time to learn those things when you get to them.

The main thing is that it rewards time spent, the longer you spend the more options available and the more fun you can have. But it isn't for everyone.

Aside from the oper8ing aspect and espionage, the Kilo Five Trilogy was not great. Author ignored a whole EU's worth of character development just so she could push her shitty dime-store morality plot.
I've only read the first two books, but I heavily doubt she got better.
>>
>>34010735
Cheer up, Marine. it'll be okay!
>>
>>34009723
Yeah, it definitely has the detached tone, but it also goes into some real brainfuck stuff at times.

As someone from /m/ primarily, and with a CS degree too, my interest largely comes from the tech side and the issues that emerge from stuff ranging from the use of smart weapons, automation of combat, and the issues of engaging with machine intelligences and how their solutions to problems can both be in line with their design and yet also potentially conflict with the interest of those employing them.

I'm sure if I scrutinize it hard enough I'll finally find something to peeve me off about Yukikaze but I've read the available books and seen the OVA several times over and it just stands out to me as solid stuff that never really feels like it betrays its age.

Only problem is there's a third book in the series, written in 2009 or so, that still hasn't been translated yet. I have hopes we'll get Unbroken Arrow Yukikaze one day, but until then the adventure just ends open ended.

It's a small mercy that the OVA was done years before Unbroken Arrow came out, and offers its own take on what the endgame for the series could be like if it ended with Good Luck Yukikaze.

>>space ship sim, including excellent combat, turrets, broadsides, mines. Story is a bit bland.

If you want a true space ship combat simulator, I would suggest the game children of a Dead Earth. It's a more realistic depiction of near future space combat than any other game I've ever played, although it can be quite boring. The campaign is short and highly linear, and the custom combat creator is somewhat limited as well. The game does simulate many different celestial bodies though, and all celestial bodies present within a combat scenario at any given time influence the orbit of a ship. You can also design every aspect of the ship, from the composition of the composite armor it uses, to the nozzle ratio and fuel isotope type on the NTR used to propel the spaceship.

But as a rule I never recommend them. ~98% of gamers will never get any enjoyment out of those sorts of games. That looks right up my alley though, thanks!
>>
>>34016225
Half the fun of Children of a Dead Earth is seeing what hilariously ridiculous and inefficient shenanigans you can pull off, like absurdly large nukes that basically take up an entire ship or missiles that fire missiles that fire missiles that fire missiles that fire missiles, that have dinky little guns on each one.
>>
>>34016300
I really appreciate that Republic Commando actually made the Super Battle Droids fucking scary. They're tall, they're armored, they don't stop for anything, and they take blaster rounds like a Terminator. It wasn't bulletsponge-feeling either, you could break the faceplate and remove limbs if I remember right.
>>
>>34016590
Yep. And if you managed to hit their visual sensor (red eye behind the faceplate) you do a nice amount of extra damage. Or you can just hit them with an AP grenade from from your space OICW
>>
>>34016640
Ammo for the sniper and the AP modes were pretty rare, though.
The Ion Rifle also made quick work of the droids, and the melee didn't use ammo but still EMP'd them.
Unfortunately, it was also very rare from what I remember. I remember keeping one last shot in so the melee could carry me through the whole hanger part.

But Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers in 1958/9, and he was in the Navy, not the infantry, and was discharged in 1934.

Joe Haldeman, however, who wrote The Forever War and Forever Peace, WAS a Vietnam vet with more pieces of metal in his body on accident than most people choose to put in. I took a class with him once; he's a pretty great guy.

I really like the way Kloos writes. His ability to accurately and intelligently describe space combat is refreshing, especially in light of all the noguns that try to write war stuff.
