Hey, /arg/, wanna build my first AR but I have questions.
Is there any reason I shouldn't get the BAD lower? It's aesthetic as fuck and obnoxious rollmarks tickle my tisms.
Ballistic Advantage, Faxon, or other barrel?
If I'm mostly going to be shooting 55gr, I want 1:7 given a 16-18" barrel, right? Will it work well with 75/77gr as well or do I want 1:9 for heavier bullets?
Wtf are anti roll and anti walk pins? They seem like they'd just get in the way.
Is carrier tilt in pistons an actual problem? I think building something similar to the HK416 with the M-LOK rail you can see SFOD-D using would be kind of neat, but not at the expense of fucking shit up. Does a piston even offer any tangible benefit?
I like the idea of an AR pistol with a Shockwave brace, but everything I can find suggests 5.56 is a shitshow on anything less than a 16" barrel. How wrong or not wrong is that conclusion?

It's expensive with little to gain from buying it.
Ballistic Advantage.
You've got twist rates backwards, 1:12 is bet for 55gr while 1:7 is better for heavier bullets. The best is 1:8, so you can shoot 55 gr and 77gr bullets with great accuracy.
Anti roll and walk pins and a stupid gimmick that don't affect anything. They're supposed to prevent trigger pins from moving, but that rarely happens and when it does it doesn't affect accuracy.
Carrier tilt is a problem, but not as much as people say. At Most you might have to replace a buffer tube very 10,000 rounds. The only benefit external pistons have over internal is that they're easier to clean.
With 5.56, your primary killing method is fragmentation of the bullet. This can only happen at a velocity that varies per loading, i.e. M193 needs 2700 fps to fragment reliably. What this means is that 55gr M193 is basically useless for anything besides CQB out of a 10.3 inch barrel, but heavier and better build bullets like MK262 can fragment reliably out to 200 yards from a 10.3 in barrel. Sorry if that's a bit unclear, feel free to ask me any questions about my explanation.

Thanks, based, helpful Anon.
The short barrel ballistics makes sense; 5.56 seems to be affected by variables far more than other rounds. Is there any way to get a 600m carbine using 5.56 or do I absolutely need the longer barrel for those ranges? If I do need the longer barrel for those ranges, would M193 be favorable over the 262 for the velocity? If I go with 5.56, should I worry about optimizing for a particular round like M193 or go with the 1:8 for multipurpose and use different rounds for different tasks?

On that note, the ballistics tables I've been able to find on 6.5 Gren seem pretty impressive. Is it actually "better" than 5.56 once it hits a target? I haven't been able find dick about how it performs terminally. Does 6.5 Grendel stabilize/perform better out of shorter barrels than 5.56?

>>33850935
Depends what you're doing. 6.5g is overall a larger round so obviously it's gonna hit harder, go further, etc, same way .308 will outperform 5.56. But 5.56 is lighter and easier to control

Only reason I'm doing it is cause the ammo is cheap and I don't want a 5.56 AR when I already own an AK-74. But even then I'll probably end up getting rid of it in a year and getting something that's actually interesting
>>
>>33850935
Tipped Match Kings would probably be the best but MK262(AKA Sierra Match Kings) isn't bad either.

Oper8tors regular make kills at 350+ yards with 10.3" MK18s and they use MK262. MK262(and other ammo like TMK or soft points) isn't dependent on velocity for fragmentation so it's pretty much "if you can hit, you will kill it".

>>33850902

>>
>>33850990
Ah, awesome, thanks a bunch! If I go with 5.56 it sounds like I'll be optimizing for 262.
>>
>>33850823
For 600m a 16 inch barrel is perfectly fine. The only other way to get a shorty to have good terminal effectiveness at that range is to handload to the absolute limit of the rifle's capability, and even that might not be possible.
MK262 still kills at a longer range even in longer barrels. It was originally developed for SPR use.
Go 1:8 simply because it does everything very well with no downsides.
>>33850847
I don't know about that, even with sierra tmk out of a 11.5 in barrel it hits 1900 fps at around 300 yards.
A 16 inch barrel would probably be necessary for perfect terminal performance at that distance.
I don't know much about 6.5, sorry.

>I don't know about that
Here, have some anecdotal evidence.

DoD seems to claim that the SOCOM 10.3" SOF gun had successful engagements to 500-600m, and the 18" platform out to 700m with the Mk 262 Mod1. My ballistics would show the 77 gr., from my AR Pistol with the same length (but much better-quality S.I.) barrel would be traveling at 1416 fps and delivering 343 fpe @ 500m -- comparable to a 9mm FMJ at contact distance, energy-wise, that killed Trayvon Martin (since his $25 million gun is in the news!). At 600m, the speed drops to 1274 fps, with 278 fpe.

Guesstimating 18" muzzle velocity at 2725 fps would yield 1332 fps and 303 fpe for the 700m kill...

So, if the round is placed correctly, you'll have 9mm or .38 Special +P performance at "max" distances. Hope that's what you were referring to re: "performance."
>>
>>33851098
Those bullets are designed to break apart on impact whereas fragmentation with FMJ is just a happy accident due to high velocity and a thin copper jacket.
>>
>>33851109
Energy is poor metric for terminal ballistics
>>
>>33851160
The important part is that SOCOM says it's effective to 600m.

Behind-the-scenes cahoots. Smoke-filled backrooms where MSD and the tripfag jamboree suck and fuck their way to juicy product discounts. One thing's for sure: whoever wins, we lose.
>>
>>33853035
It's way more comfy and you can shoot it faster
Also highly recommend the Larry Snickers slide stop

Is a 1:14 twist 20 inch barrel enough to stabilize a 55 grain fmj? According to the infographic it should be, but I've heard of keyholing happening anyway and it makes me paranoid.

Maybe 1:12? I want that famous Vietnam era tumble and fragment effect, yet still have good accuracy to 300 meters.

New Glocks are shipping w metal sights. I prefer cheapos because they're getting binned for Trijicons anyway.
Grip now fits my hand instead of generic hand #.
Slide stop is perfect on all but large frame Glocks w heavier recoil spring if you drop slide w just your thumb (I do) but if you use your offhand oem is fine
Nien mag release and mags perfect
There is no excuse for no front serrartions though, new ones will have it
What are precision hunting barrels too tight for self defense duty carry

Question for the experts.
I have a colt lower with no pivot pin detent hole so I will use the screw type pivot pin.
Do you need to loosen the screw just to hinge the upper, or is it only necessary to loosen the screw to separate the upper and lower?
