you're assuming that the average NVA conscript (and by extension, entire postwar generations) sympathized with old Germany. The vast majority of them weren't even alive during the war and grew up in the DDR.

Did the NVA ever get to issue the MPi-AK-74N and it's variants or did the wall fall before that heppened? They only started producing them in 1985.

Most were NSDAP members who realized they were going to be facing some very serious charges after the war and chose to end their lives before they could face trial, others were commanders who didn't want to experience surrender or being a PoW, and some killed themselves to prevent being caught by the Nazis or their families becoming targets. There was the government encouraging death before surrender or telling people they were either going to fight or be executed as cowards.

Many of the people that praise the DDR and NVA in this board are pretty much closet wehraboos; they fetishize the NVA appearance because the close resemble with the Wehrmacht uniforms, adding here the helmet that was a Third Reich discarded model, brag how the NVA maintained the traditional Prussian discipline in the army, and complain how the cold war era Bundeswehr is too liberal and american looking.

The DDR era is pretty much adored here as a time when Germany could have a strong national pride, different from what they perceive in current Germany.

I should have been more clear. I was trying to skirt around mentioning /pol/ directly with the "Some on this site" remark.
In my experience browsing that board I see clear fetishization of Nazi Germany and praise for what it did, while at the same time seeing condemnation of the DDR and modern Germany. Which copied certain elements from the Nazis such as censorship, spying on citizens, and political fanaticism towards one cause to the point it become extremely harmful (Be it National Socialism, Socialism, or Tolerance). I find it highly hypocritical, especially when a Nazi is calling someone else a bootlicker or destroyer of nations.

I know /k/ is usually more rational and just wants to discuss the military aspects, which is why I come here. I also understand some look at the DDR with fondness because of the reasons you mentioned.
At the end of the day, as long as the military discussion is the focus and not political debate/insults then things are fine.

With freedom of travel, I am sure many would have gone West but many would have also stayed, some may have even moved into the DDR. From a military aspect it would have been interesting. The NVA was producing newer equipment and drawing up plans for their own stuff such as the Wieger StG-940 (Even though it's mostly an AK)
Maybe they could have struck deals with Russia/CIS or a Western nation to buy equipment or help develop stuff. I could see a future NVA producing and adopting an indigenous tank and moving their T-72s into reserves.
They would certainly have to look for outside help since East Germany didn't have all that many resources of its own, but with diplomacy and trade that issue could be averted.

They had prototypes for 5.45x39mm and for 5.56x45mm so that they could work in both scenarios of staying in and leaving the Warsaw Pact.
Wikipedia says the Bundeswehr tested them and that the Stasi were using them to some extent.

I would say that the Bundeswehr fared better in that matter; by late 50's a german general was already the Supreme Commander of NATO ground forces, which generated alot of commie propaganda acussing NATO of being lead by ex Nazis, and they developed their own strong and successful technological and military complex, which reduced the need to relying too much on their allies for equipments.

Nazi Germany also spilled a lot more blood fighting the USSR and hated them more than they did the west, for what its worth. So let's talk. I always wondered what the role of the NVA was. Were they just cannon fodder for Soviet big bro? Were they dedicated, loyal, and willing to invade their not so far off family to the west and beyond? This makes an interesting point. The NVA's overall belief was in a war they would be liberating their brothers in the West. In the event of war, I wonder how the NVA would have done after the battle for Germany.
Would they slow down or cease fighting, having felt they achieved reunification? Obviously, the Soviets would not be happy if one of their most competent allies decided to stop fighting if the USSR wanted to go to the whole way to the coast of Europe.

The stuff about the NVA in Africa is interesting as well. They supplied, trained, and assisted a few African countries in military and civil matters. Those nations sending students and workers to the DDR. Something I never really knew about until recently. Unfortunately, many Africans were unpaid for their work since after the reunification, the government that was paying them ceased to exist.

My personal view is that if in the eventuality of the capitulation of West Germany territory, and the battlelines now reaching French territory, the majority of the East German units would stay behind to ocuppy, manage and administrate the now ocuppied german territores, as well as serving as strategical reserve in case of a Allied reversal. Thats of course if the West German and American units are not able to hold the line in Germany, and if the Russians are complacent enough to let ossies behind in the bench, doing their stuff.

I think the most likely events of a war in Germany is that there wouldn't be much of either Germany left to govern since nukes would have been used. By the Soviets to open gaps in defenses to attack through, and by the Americans to stop those Soviet advances. After that, the NVA and Bundeswehr may stay in their lands trying to salvage things and assist the populations.

If nukes weren't used then I don't think a Warsaw Pact occupation of Germany would last very long, assuming they could actually push NATO entirely out. A few weeks at most before NATO came back and pushed the Soviets out (I can't see how a successful push through France would be possible.)
There would also be deserters from the Warsaw Pact forces, though I cannot at all say to what extent or if it would hinder the force's ability to fight. There's a point where any losses in manpower must take their toll.
