Nothing stopping them from making new aks with 1mm receivers. Is there?

Didn't need it but it was cheaper than they usually go for. I really need to work on the whole "I don't need it but it's cheaper than what they usually go for so I'll buy it anyway and just hang on to it just to have it" thing because that often gets me

Also if I make a necklace out of all the AK auto sears that I don't have lying around (cuz they be illegal nawmean) will I get mystical powers?

It was his obligation to replace it. He's lucky he didn't lose something even more rare. Imagine if he had lost a PLO barrel or something else near irreplaceable. I disliked him and Jakes' shilling for him and the rest of the hugbox from the very beginning.

I mean I get having him build simple stuff like Romy or Polish kits of you really really want to support the new kid on the block because if he messes anything up it won't be as big of a deal, but what on earth would make someone send him something as rare as that DDR kit when he's some new Reddit nobody? I'd be sending that to someone considerably more reputable (I mean I wouldn't send anything to Spivey at all in the first place but you get what I'm saying)

And really nigga you're gonna try and save $5 on shipping and risk hurting something if it's all packed tight? Did you at least bubble wrap it to hell and back?

>>33716368
WA, no full auto or evil machine gun parts have been allowed for a long time (we only recently got SBRs, still no SBSs though). When buying kits from retailers they go through and pick out all the FA components like vultures, and some retailers just straight up refuse to sell kits here all together

Yeah, it was the guy's fault too for falling for the reddit memes.

I prefer to have things packed tight, keeps the box from getting crushed and keeps the items inside the box from shifting around everywhere. It's all bubble wrapped.

>>
>>33716567
I do too, but there's a difference between packed tight and being stuffed full. I'm just imagining it packed super tight with the box all bulged and only being kept from exploding by a couple rolls of tape

One of my old friends would call that "tight as a two year old"

Do you have an ETA on when your kit will be done? Did anyone ever buy your other AKM kit?

Got one when they were $200, another when they dropped to $160, and now I have 4 coming at $66.

I'm not even salty about spending the money when they were more rare, because now I can get more for the money.

If it's a truly minty Tula with good coloring on the wood then that's not surprising. They were selling for as much as $2000 immediately after Rguns sold out of the Tula hand selects.

I remember I was watching one on gunbroker that was priced at like $1000, just salivating over how awesome it was. I had watched it go through probably a dozen auction cycles with no bids. Then one day Tantal made a thread about how awesome it was, and it sold for $2000 that night. I was crestfallen.

If you can score this one below the BIN price, it's actually a really good value.

Started life as a 5.45 Vepr.
Bought a 5.45 Bulgy barrel when K-var had them and most of the other parts came from Russtock.

Had the builder square up the rear, install the side-folder, pull the old barrel and install the new one.

Pricey, but worth it.
>>
>>33717969
Bushmaster has a bad reputation now. Back before Freedom Group took over, their QC was good to go, but now they cut corners as much as possible and aren't known for quality.
Your best bet is to wait for another scare.
>>
>>33718199
How much in total? I want to do basically the same thing when I have an excess of green to put into slavshit when I'm done with battle rifles
>>
>>33718199
If I had a 5.45 bulgy barrel today, it'd be so much easier, and cheaper, with the side folding 5.45 Vepr that K-var has right now.

Luckily, they have the same thing in 7.62, so I'll be doing my next RPK for much less money in the next year or so.
>>
>>33718209
When I did it, probably around $3k total, give or take.

But good luck finding a reasonably priced 5.45 RPK barrel.

Best bet is to go the 7.62 route (as of today) in my opinion.

>>
>>33718273
The 7.62 I'm planning on should be a shade over $2k when it's all finished. Like I said, it's become a little cheaper since K-var brought in rifles with the correct rear trunnion. Only thing you really have to do for the rear is find someone in Russia to send you the clubfoot with the proper hardware to fit the trunnion.

Other than that, it's picking up a bulgy barrel and the barrel parts, having them installed, having the barrel turned for the correct profile, then installation.

If you want to get super autistic ( I do) have the builder engrave proper selector settings.
>>

>>33718352
You're makin me want to start an RPK rather than an AR now. But it's gonna be a while before I get another gun at all I think
>>
>>33718371
That'd be the one I'd start with too.
And honestly, if I couldn't get the correct barrel, I'd just have RPK barrel components installed on that one and have a shorty-folder.

Again, I'd definitely find someone to get that clubfoot with hardware for the trunnion though. That clubfoot folder is pure sex.

>>33718381
As a guy that has a few ARs, I'll say this, the ARs will always be there, but we don't know how long the Veprs will be around.

Sure there's a good chance that they'll be around for a while, but ARs are practically guaranteed not to go anywhere. And if they do, the imports will surly have been gone for a while by that time.
>>
>>33717857
Who knows. This definitely adds to the experience though :)
>>
>>33718447
True, I've been sorta hesitant to do it all, but I've always wanted an M4 clone despite not liking basically any other ARs. 6.5 grendel has had my attention too which was my plan for it

Pick up some Csspecs mags for it, when I had my .308 VEPR I had a half dozen 20 round mags from them and they were great

I'd already been eyeing some mags. I'd seen promag 20rd for about $25. Since you had good experiences, I'll go with your suggestion though.
For now I'll have 2 10rd and a 5rd mag. And honestly, that's fine for now, if not forever. 10 extra rounds is just another pound of weight I don't need on my gun. I don't really magdump often or anything.
10rds has been fine for my other 308 gun too.

>>
>>33719328
Yeah honestly I only got them to have some extendos, I did most of my shooting with the factory 10 rounder just because it was lighter. The Csspecs were great mags though, they're all steel so they're on the heavier side but I never had any issues with them. I believe they make them in 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mags but admittedly I haven't checked since I sold that VEPR three years ago

Yeah, you'll find it. Steel wool is common, 0000 is one of the finer weaves and it is more or less steel sandpaper.

I wouldn't touch up bluing, it's impossible to match. Either have it reblued or just keep it oiled like always. If you get a bluing pen or do some other kind of cold bluing it will not wear well and will be more of an eyesore.

Honest wear is good.

Chimps, was that you that was looking for a specific dust cover with a certain lip or ledge (not sure what to call it) near the ejection port or was that someone else? Comparing the new smooth top cover that just came to my old one I noticed they're different there (or maybe I'm just dumb and they're not) and that sparked a memory of someone here wanting a specific smooth dust cover with a slightly different ejection port
>>
>>33721650
Those two are the same variation, even if they look slightly different. That is the modern one, the slightly older one has very little bend inwards around the ejection port. When you posted about buying a smooth dust cover I did wonder if it would be the one I've been searching for.

>>

Don't put pressure on it, just take it easy. This is the same method you use to get rust off of a blued firearm.

Oil is crucial, it is just like wetting sandpaper and prevents scratches.

Just like painting, start in an inconspicuous area. You will get a feel for it.

If that paint comes off with a fingernail, a plastic razor might take it off a lot faster than steel wool, and won't fuck up the underlying finish either.
>Get both as you'll still likely need the wool for stubborn areas.

I went to the saint charles missouri gun show today. In the corner of the big facility was an old man who had a big table. He had many magazines everywhere. In the midst of it all, I picked up an AK magazine.
The old man says "well aren't you a lucky one". I ask why. He tells me "that's a chinese magazine that holds 40 rounds. It's rare because they don't supply us with their nice magazines anymore.

The old man charged me 50 bucks. Apparently it's a good deal.

Well, the only good 10 round steel mags I know of are Chinese.
Worst Korea and Croatia also have some that are more readily available.

Chinese one's are going to be somewhat to turn up, and you won't find them in any store.
Files or other forums are about the best shot.

The Croatian ones,I'm guessing might have fitment issues like their 30 round counterparts, but aside from that I've heard no real gripe about them.
Worst Korea on the other hand can be found readily, although their durability is questionable.

I'll drop links for the 2

To put it in a very gist format

VEPR has an RPK receiver, RPK furniture, cucked FSB and GB so no cleaning rod, and different barrel profile. It's more like a shortened and import legal RPK than an AKM
>>
>>33724288
Is that bad?
>>
>>33724293
It's not bad, it's just different. The US AK market is pretty fucked so it's just one of the few options we have left

If all you want to do is shoot 7.62x39 out of something that feels like an AK it'll be an alright gun, but for the same price point an SLR-107fr or an SLR-107r for cheaper would be closer to the real deal options

AR noobie here. I see the AR thread is full of posters with various configured rifles. What makes AK's so special that you guys differentiate them from the general AR thread?

Not meming or trying to be antagonistic. What makes the AK preferable over a run of the mill AR-15? Is it just all about the caliber? An aesthetics thing?
>>
>>33724344
SLR-107FR and you can't really go wrong. It's the closest you can get to an AK-103 without buying an SGL and doing a bunch of work. Either that or a WASR if what you're looking for is a more classic AKM

I'd recommend giving the pastebin a read and just checking out all the models on there >>33716069
You have plenty of time
>>
>>33724358
I think /akg/ is largely flipped from /arg/ in regards to what it wants - in /arg/, everyone wants to be unique, but in /akg/, most people are trying to be the same.

You rarely see clone builds in /arg/, but here most of the non-"wut AK" discussion is about finding parts and matching models to combloc-issued weapons from various countries and eras.

Some of it's definitely caliber and aesthetics too, but personally I like AKs because restoring one with correct parts is a nice break from ricing out a modern rifle.
>>
>>33724358
You're right, AKs don't really warrant their own general. We should all just abandon ship here and migrate to /arg/ and post there instead. You make a good point, lots of people post non-AR guns in /arg/, so why should we be any different? I'm sure the guys at /arg/ would be happy to pad their numbers and shake things up a bit.
>>
>>33724358
>No springy noise
>doesn't feel like a toy
>a fun gun to shoot

>etc
So yeah, fuck you

So it's Al!Let like trying to rebuild a numbers matching classic car for some of you? I.e. I have a 67 Corvette that I want to get back to show room floor quality with all the same parts it came with from the factory. And I noticed that yea. Most of the AK's ITT seem to be similar. I also noticed that many look either old, or overall well worn. Are AK's and their parts hard to get in the states? Is it due to simple lack of availability? Or is it more a "my country made importing these illegal" problem? Is there such a thing as. "new" AK? One that fires a standard 7.62 round but doesn't have furniture wood for stock etc?
>>33724397
Well I'm not saying you should abandon AKG in favor of ARG, I was just curious. AR-15's and AK's are both considered AR's. So I wondered what made an AK so special, it has its own general.
>>33724400
All sound like excellent reasons anon. No need for the hostility. I don't own an AR of any kind. Just a simple Maverick 88 12gauge pump action. I've seen the slow motion videos of a partially disassembled AK shooting. Almost hypnotic.

Are we getting "ebin trollbined XD"?
>>
>>33724496
nice
>>
>>33724496
I get the feeling you're just new and not trolling, so I'll start out by saying AKs don't go in the AR thread because "AR" in the context of /arg/ means "Armalite Rifle" and not "Assault Rifle." That's why you'll sometimes see the larger AR-10 models in /arg/ as well, but you won't see non-AR platform rifles for the most part (occasionally a SCAR or AR-180 will pop up, but they're more distant cousins to the AR-10 and AR-15).

As for your question about numbers matching classic cars, yes, for some of us, that's exactly what it is. "Parts matching" is a very desirable thing in AK builds for that reason, and there's enough minor AK variants that there's a market for each type. If you don't speak the language, you probably will never be able to tell a Maadi from a Tula from a WASR other than the Tula looking prettier, the WASR looking newer, and the Maadi looking rougher, but eventually you get to the point where you can ID the gun based on spot weld shapes or wood grain in the factory furniture.

Regarding getting AKs, yes, they're harder to get stateside. Quite a few of us are building or have built AKs from parts kits made from chopped up military rifles, but others buy factory-new AKs in various configurations. What's legal and what isn't legal to import is a bizarre patchwork of part type and manufacturer bans (for example, 2 of the 3 Russian manufacturers can no longer export AKs to the US, and imported barrels fetch high premiums for the most part). It's still relatively easy to buy a "good" new AK, but the more specific you get about what you want, the harder and more expensive it will often become to get it. If you want just an AK-74, there's a few places you can get one, but if you specifically want an Afghan-style AKS-74 or a "correct" AK-74M, suddenly your options dwindle and the price rises.
